A North Texas nurse is going above and beyond to make sure her students and their families stay safe and healthy. Veronica De La Torre was already super busy as a registered nurse at a local hospital, but a phone call from a recruiter prompted her to take on even more. "A recruiter didn't know that I'm a chronic asthmatic or that my kids are chronic asthmatics but she told me that kids every year die in the school district from preventable asthma-related causes," Veronica said. "I was flabbergasted. It dwelled on me and the more and more I thought about it, I thought, 'I've got to get in there and help.'" While maintaining her nursing job at the hospital, she is the school nurse at DISD's Young Women's STEAM Academy, an all-girls school that focuses on math and engineering. The campus is also home to special needs students who have chronic health conditions and need special care. It's one of the few DISD schools that provides care for those kinds of students.  Along with the unique challenges of dealing with special education students, a language barrier exists not just for her students but for their families, many of whom only speak Spanish. When covid hit Veronica went even further to ensure her students and their families got the medical care they needed. "When I could hear the angst in my students' voices and they are so worried about it, I'm worried about it too. If your family unit is not safe, then you're not safe and don't feel safe, " Veronica said. "They would tell me things like they went to get tested and they were positive for the coronavirus but they didn't know what to do after that. They were sent home so I actually met several families at local hospitals so they could seek treatment. I met a couple of families here on campus in the parking lot in our car so they could follow me to a hospital so they could get treatment."  For Veronica, it's just another day on the job.  "If I could get them the help they need, that's why I wanted to be a nurse," Veronica said. "It's rewarding to hear them tell you, 'If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have made it,' and I really appreciate it. It's a cultural issue and I'm thrilled to be a part of the solution." We're proud to call Veronica De La Torre this week's KRLD Difference Maker.  If you know someone making a difference in the community send us an email at differencemaker@krld.com.

Since the pandemic hit in March of 2020, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins has been capitalizing on the emergency powers afforded to him during the crisis. The County Judge is considered the County's “Chief Executive Officer” for the purposes of signing contracts and executing other matters approved by the Court. Dallas County is the second largest in Texas. After more than a decade of political theater under Jenkins' leadership, Dallas County residents on both sides of the aisle are ripe for change. Billy Clark is the Democratic challenger to Clay Jenkins for the March Primary in 2022. Billy is has three daughters and one son. He has over 20 years of military experience both enlisted and as an officer. Clark is also the Managing Attorney of The Clark Law Firm, PLLC where his practice area includes Criminal Defense, Civil Rights, and Aviation law.Prior to starting his legal career, Clark was a teacher at Klein Forest High School in Houston, Texas. He was the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor for the Junior Air Force ROTC program. After Hurricane Harvey, Clark returned to Dallas County.Billy shared his concerns about the current leadership over the Commissioners Court, the elections office, public health, emergency management, and the recent malfeasance with more than $600,000 in Dallas County Jail inmates' commissary funds stolen. I shared my concerns about Jenkins' attempt to steer CARES money to his buddies, Miguel Solis, a former DISD trustee and current employee of Commit, and his former campaign manager Philip Hiatt Haigh. A bipartisan trio of commissioners thwarted a scheme by Jenkins to use “ZuckBucks” which would have been in direct violation of Texas election law. The Democrat-dominated court voted 3-2 to eliminate Jenkins' plan to use Communities Foundation to funnel money to more of his “favorite folks.”Dallas has an opportunity for change in leadership in 2022. When the first school bells ring across Texas just weeks from now, students, parents, and educators will head back into the pandemic unknown. The Jasons check back in with Dallas ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa. He was on Y'all-itics a year ago when there was so much uncertainty heading into a new school term. It feels like that all over again as he readies his mega-district for the start of the '21-‘22 session. In fact, he'll preside over three different school start dates this year. His district and others are getting creative and sharing ideas with each other. Critics say there isn't much guidance coming from the state, except for orders that schools can't mandate masks or offer a virtual learning option. So, what happens if kids have to quarantine? Flush with federal cash from Covid relief legislation, Dr. Hinojosa says DISD is hiring an army of tutors. The district also plans to self-fund a virtual option if the state doesn't agree to foot the bill for it. Also joining the Jasons for this episode is Texas PTA President Suzi Kennon, with what the state PTA will be doing to help make a tough year easier and what she's hearing from parents across the state. Kennon also gets real---as a mom---and shares her concerns for her own child as kids head back to class at a time when the highly transmissible Delta variant of coronavirus is aggressively spreading across Texas, which continues to struggle with a lackluster vaccination rate.

My journey began with a mother that was a very loving, nurturing and insightful woman. My childhood was filled with joy and enrichment. She shared a lot of her wisdom with me throughout my childhood and gave me all of the tools she felt I needed to become a successful independent woman. I was a member of a synchronized swim team, Girl Scouts, Jr. Red Cross Volunteer; voted Most Popular in High School, Captain of Competitive High School Swim Team, and Varsity cheerleader; traveled outside and throughout the U.S. before 18 years of age. I attended University of Southern California and graduated from Texas Women’s University. I received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree and Master’s degree in Education with a certification in Early Childhood Education, was selected as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, voted DISD teacher of the Year and was a recipient of the Golden Apple Award from Hartford Public Schools. I taught kindergarten in DISD for 13 years and 2nd and 5th grade for 2 years in Hartford, Connecticut. I mention these accomplishments because I had a wonderful and loving childhood. Drug addiction does not apply to any particular socio-economic group or status- quo. The disease of addiction robbed me of all the positive things in my life for which I had worked. Instead of prosperity, my addition took me to a place of emotional, spiritual and physical bankruptcy. I used drugs for 10 years. It was not until I reached a place of extreme hopelessness that I realized that jails/institutions were not a part of the vision my mother had for me. This is when I sought help to recover. In June of 2003 I began my journey of long term recovery, a new journey that involved walking a totally different path. This journey involves me helping others. I am currently certified by the State of Texas as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist and have a Masters in Social Work from Texas A&M- Commerce University. I am motivated by my commitment of making a living amends to my mother, who died before I got clean/sober. I know that my dedication to help others would make her proud of me. I began praying for direction and realized that my passion for children was still there. I also discovered a new passion which involved working with women suffering from the same disease that so affected my adult life. Through prayer, my vision became clear. I wanted to give women and children the same hope, comfort and stability that had sustained my growing up. It was with this vision that Hopeful Solutions was born.

Blackburn had sexual relationship with a woman who was fired by DISD. He then sat on an HR panel that reviewed the appropriateness of that firing. That poor judgment is just one of the reasons that D Magazine's city columnist, Eric Celeste, says that Blackburn should be voted out. Eric also talks with Tim and Zac about the Morning News' diss of Brett Shipp and about Tim's trip to Forney, where he hoped to meet Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress who — reportedly — did adult things with Donald Trump. Miguel Solis, when he was 27, was the youngest trustee ever elected to the DISD board of trustees, and he got a master's degree from Harvard. If that sounds boring, what if I told you that he's married to a physician-athlete superhero, that he knows more about A Tribe Called Quest than you do, and that he has a good argument for why you should pay more taxes to make Dallas an even better place? Give us five stars in iTunes or we will kill you. Thanks.

As the year draws to a close, Dora Rivas joins us to look back and reflect—not just on 2015, but a half century of service as a dietitian and school food service director. Last August, when she left her post as Executive Director of food service for Dallas ISD, Dora was an iconic figure in K-12 nutrition, recognized nationally as an early adopter of well-defined public health goals for schools. But her story is about private goals, too, and their roots in family and a career launched in a South Texas migrant health clinic.     “Dora Rivas is on an insatiable quest to improve the nutrition in Dallas’ public schools,” Dallas Observer, June 26, 2014 “My Interview with Dora Rivas, Former President of the School Nutrition Association,” The Lunch Tray, June 13, 2014 “DISD school lunches reviewed: Restaurant critic Leslie Brenner goes back to school,” Guidelive.com, August 19, 2015 Related Inside School Food episode: “The Urban School Food Alliance Travels to France,” November 3, 2014
