Efah joins Sujata on today's episode of Hangout with Sujata, as she navigates us through her unique journey. Another badass asteroid mission, Costco cracking down on their memberships, and Dr. Ken Harris joins the show for an in-depth discussion surrounding the services provided by UW's Diversity, Ethnicity, and Inclusion offices.
Paul's House. Ben and Lisa had played through some jazz standards already and thoroughly enjoyed how it sounded, so we decided to gang up with Paul to get that authentic jazz sax sound. It is always much harder to find songs in keys that can all be agreed upon, but much more fun when someone else is soloing, too. Worth noting that there was a lot more to this rehearsal, but the batteries gave out in Bens Zoom H4n, so it was not captured. The recording stopped right in the middle of the second time through Feelin Good.

Tom Ruwitch is invited on today's episode of Hangout with Sujata to share some of his musical inspiration in a breezy conversation with Sujata. Tom is the founder and CEO of Story Power Marketing. Coaches, consultants and other experts hire Tom to power up their stories because most dish out the same “blah, blah, blah” content, put prospects to sleep, and then feel fed up and stuck. So Tom helps them transform content from boring to brilliant, turn marketing from frustrating to fun, and convert results from pitiful to profitable. Bottom line, with great content, you can stand out above your competitors, captivate prospects, and inspire them to buy – without pitching and prodding. Tom's playlist as follows: Just One Victory by Todd Rundgren Forever Young by Bob Dylan Three Little Birds by Bob Marley River by Joni Mitchell I Lost It by Lucinda Williams Have a Little Faith In Me by John Hiatt I Just Want to Dance with You by John Prine This Must Be the Place by Talking Heads Mercy Now by Mary Gauthier Day in the Sun by Neal Casal They Can't Take That Away from Me by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong Doesn't Make It Alright by The Specials Fantastic Voyage by David Bowie Enjoy!
Episode 10 of Misadventures in Music was recorded at SVARA Radio based in Liverpool's Baltic Triangle. The boys are joined by David Fishel who is musician from Liverpool and has produced the JazzScene radio show broadcasting in several countries between 1992 - 2002. David Fishel has worked with Malcolm McLaren, Patti Boulaye, Steve Levine and 'discovered' Anabella from Bow Wow Wow. He spent 21 years in Norway as a producer/presenter for NRK, Norwegian national radio where he interviewed some of his jazz heroes. David's love for music started when he was introduced to Liverpool R & B band, Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen, who played in Hamburg before the Beatles in 1960. To say that he knows how to tell a story is the understatement of the year. He's now in the middle of writing his autobiography - he's given Misadventures in Music a sneak preview. Passage: Luke 10:38-42 Verse: “But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”” Luke 10:41-42 NLT Martha was worried & upset as she struggled to prepare dinner for her guests. Her sister, Mary sat visiting with the guests rather than helping Martha as she should. When Martha asked Jesus to tell her sister to help her, Jesus' reply caused a change that we need to remember today. The 3 points from this lesson: Martha was doing what she should; Mary was doing what she needed; Jesus invited both to join Him. Links: Simple Joy Life of Siimple Joy Grace Space Contact

Throughout last year we repeatedly spoke about the freedoms that Americans enjoy every day. We spoke about the needs for individuals to not only express their freedoms, but to be prepared to fight for them if necessary. No, not like those freaks did on January 6th of this year, but pay attention to the voting booths, and the proposed ordnance's and laws that are up for a vote. To be a civilized society, we must each endeavor to be respectful of the rules governing a society. Unlike the clowns of early January 2021, we need to have order and discussion. That is how a society works. There are rules, and the idea that we trample others rights in the demand for our own is a definite path to anarchy, and societal collapse.
Mel talks with Steven Salvatore, author of Can't Take That Away! "You shouldn't have to explain yourself everyday." They discuss mental health/therapy rep in the book, Steven's experiences that inspired Carey and their journey, and how important it is for people, especially young people, to be able to see themselves in literature. Steven mentions some other queer books they have loved including, Reverie and Bedazzled by Ryan LaSala and Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. Steven has their next book, And They Lived, coming out in March of 2022, and Can't Take That Away is available in North America, anywhere you can buy books!! Today I'm interviewing Steven Salvatore, the author of the Young Adult Contemporary novel, Can't Take That Away, which debuted in March of 2021. Steven grew up in Tarrytown, New York. They studied writing and art history at Ithaca College, and received their MFA in Creative Writing with a concentration in Writing for Children from The New School. Formerly a full-time Assistant Professor of Composition and Director of the Writing Center at CNR, they oversaw the Freshman Writing Program and taught creative writing. After CNR officially ceased academic operations in August of 2019, they began teaching part time at Pace University and Westchester Community College. They also volunteer at The LOFT (an LGBTQ+ resource center in White Plains, New York) where they facilitate a creative writing workshop. As an educator, Steven is passionate about progressive activism on and off campus and advocating for young people. Steven currently lives in Peekskill, New York, with their amazingly patient husband, whose name is also Steve. Today, we're talking about the anti-climactic free fall into nothing that is debuting during a pandemic, coming to terms with an author's lack of control, and the gift of closure in such uncertain times. I had such a great time talking with Steven two months post their debut and one month post my own and I felt so validated by our conversation. They reminded me that even though it feels like something has come to an end, we're actually at the beginning of, hopefully, very long careers, and that it's important to keep your eyes on the horizon, even in the midst of life's storms. So find your favorite spot on the couch, get cozy, and then enjoy my conversation with Steven Salvatore. Connect with Steven online: Steven's Website Twitter Instagram Buy their books!
Synopsis On today’s date in 1825, the Italian composer Antonio Salieri breathed his last in Vienna. Gossip circulated that in his final dementia, Salieri blabbed something about poisoning Mozart. Whether he meant it figuratively or literally, or even said anything of the sort, didn’t seem to matter and the gossip became a Romantic legend. Modern food detectives suggested that if Mozart WAS poisoned, an undercooked pork chop might be to blame… In one of his last letters to his wife, Mozart mentions his anticipation of feasting on a fat chop his cook had secured for his dinner! Twenty-five years after Salieri’s death, on today’s date in 1850, the Austro-Hungarian conductor Anton Seidl was born in Budapest. Seidl became a famous conductor of both the Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic. It was Seidl who conducted the premiere of Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony. In 1898, at the age of just 47, Seidl died suddenly, apparently from ptomaine poisoning. Perhaps it was the shad roe he ate at home, or that sausage from Fleischmann’s restaurant? An autopsy revealed serious gallstone and liver ailments, so maybe Seidl’s last meal, whatever it might have been, was as innocent of blame as poor old Salieri. The Sue Morgan Podcast Episode 16 - You Can't Take That Away From Me 160121 by Random audio from UK broadcaster Ian Watko Watkins
From the tragic tale of a talent taken too soon to a dream of 1950's desegregation, the story of George and Ira Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away From Me."
DeShawn Roberts is a second degree Wing Chun Black Belt who loves teaching martial arts to people of all ages. You may know Wing Chun as Magic Hands as seen in the Karate Kid. He's a Louisville, Kentucky native whose grandmother owned a restaurant. He enjoyed some amazing down home, southern Thanksgiving meals with family. His recollection made my mouth water. Our conversation went all over the place. We talk about cooking, attempted sexual assaults, levels of implicit bias and all the usual topics related to being a Black man in the United States. His first interaction with law enforcement happened while playing an innocent game of tag with friends. It's a rich conversation you don't want to miss. DeShawn's favorite words is the quote "Joy is not an emotion. It's a decision. I choose to have joy." DeShawn's favorite song is Mariah's Carey Can't Take That Away. Apple, Stitcher Google Podcasts About this podcast: In each episode, a Brother reflects on his life; explores the experience of being a Black man in America; shares his interactions with law enforcement; and answers the question "If America was a woman, what would you say to her?" Every interview starts with getting-to-know-you questions about favorites, accomplishments and then goes deeper. You won't find a collection of conversations with Black men like this anywhere else. That's what Jay calls a Bach piece arranged for organ by Jean Guillou: pure joy. There is some more pure joy in this episode too—including the final movement of Brahms's Horn Trio, which Jay plays to honor Myron Bloom, the great French-horn player who died on September 26. He also honors, at the end, Christopher Rouse, the American composer, who died on September 21. Music, said Rouse, in a statement to be issued after his passing, “has given me life and a reason for living.” Jay also plays some Ella Fitzgerald, some Leontyne Price, and more. There is also a tale from opera lore: about Rudolf Bing and George Szell, who were too big for the same town. Tracks played: Bach-Guillou, Sinfonia Beethoven, “Pastoral” Symphony Brahms, Horn Trio Gershwin, “They Can't Take That Away from Me” Chopin, “Winter Wind” Etude Barber, “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” Rouse, Symphony No. 3

S7E19 - "They Can’t Take That Away from Me." Today on QTWFT, we learn . . . the one thing they knew how to do on this show was casting girlfriends for Alex P. Keaton.
Your relationship with God is something that nobody and nothing can steal away. We can become distracted, or choose not to pursue Him, but nobody else can make that decision for us. It's not about isolating ourselves, or neglecting our responsibilities, but about putting our priorities in order and making the time for the relationship, just like any other.
This week we delve into the world of old movie musicals brought to the stage. We take a look at the Broadway tour of An American in Paris. We also go in-depth with the classic Spanish drama, Yerma, staged by the Young Vic Theatre in London and shared with the world by National Theatre Live in London. An American in Paris, tells the thrilling story of a young American soldier, a beautiful French girl, and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. Featuring a score including the songs “I Got Rhythm,” “‘S Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” “Stairway to Paradise,” “They Can't Take That Away” and orchestral music including “Concerto in F,” “2nd Prelude,” “2nd Rhapsody” and “An American in Paris.” In Yerma, the incredible Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Great Britain) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress award-winning role. A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone's radical production of Lorca's achingly powerful masterpiece. The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at the Young Vic and critics call it ‘an extraordinary theatrical triumph' (The Times) and ‘stunning, searing, unmissable' (Mail on Sunday). Billie Piper's lead performance is described as ‘spellbinding' (The Evening Standard), ‘astonishing' (iNews) and ‘devastatingly powerful' (The Daily Telegraph). Set in contemporary London, Piper's portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax. _______ National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. They've since broadcast more than forty other productions live, from both the National Theatre and from other theatres in the UK. Their broadcasts have now been experienced by over 5.5 million people in over 2,000 venues around the world, including over 650 venues in the UK alone. Past broadcasts from the National Theatre have included Danny Boyle's Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; War Horse; Man and Superman with Ralph Fiennes; and Everyman with Chiwetel Ejiofor. Broadcasts from other UK theatres include Coriolanus from the Donmar Warehouse; A View from the Bridge from the Young Vic; Macbeth from the Manchester International Festival; and Hangmen and The Audience from London's West End. Our biggest single broadcast to date is Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican, which has been seen by over 550,000 people. In 2014 the National Theatre recorded its first production on Broadway, Of Mice and Men with James Franco and Chris O'Dowd, captured at the Longacre Theatre. Though each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house' view of each production. Where these cameras are placed is different for each broadcast, to make sure that cinema audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time.
