Affordable Interior Design presents Big Design, Small Budget

In this episode of the Uploft Interior Design Podcast, I shared how I recently changed my podcast schedule to make my busy workweeks more manageable while juggling exciting design projects like a plastic surgeon's office and a corporate lounge space. I also talked about taking Mahjong classes as a way to build community in Connecticut and how I became obsessed with a Mahjong influencer's colorful style, only to realize after spending hundreds of dollars on clothes that I was trying to become someone else instead of embracing my own style. That experience led me into a bigger conversation about how people often fall in love with aspirational interiors or fashion that don't actually fit their real lives, homes, or personalities. I answered a listener's question about why dining chandeliers should hang lower over tables, explaining how lighting placement creates intimacy and visual connection in a room. Finally, I dove into my mixed feelings about Lena Dunham's memoir Famesick, praising her incredible writing while also criticizing what I felt was a lack of honesty about privilege and accountability in parts of the book. Luke 7:34 “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking…” What if your dining room is more sacred than you realized? This week at Sideris Church, we explored how Jesus used the table as one of His primary ways of bringing people into grace, friendship, healing, and reconciliation. In the Gospels, Jesus is constantly going to a meal, at a meal, or leaving one. The dining room becomes the place where status is leveled, thanksgiving is shared honestly, and grace is exchanged deeply. From the Last Supper in Luke 22 to Jesus eating with tax collectors and sinners, we see a Savior who came “eating and drinking” as part of His mission to seek and save the lost. Around the table, enemies become friends, strangers become family, and heaven’s hospitality breaks into the present moment. In this message, we reflect on: • Why conviction is a gift, not a guilt trip • What it means to build life on the rock by hearing and doing Jesus’ words • How shared meals become spaces of reconciliation and grace • Why the table matters so deeply in the Kingdom of God • Practical ways to redesign our schedules, homes, and habits around hospitality As we redesign our lives around Jesus’ way, we begin bringing our future heavenly home into the present one meal at a time. Scripture References: Luke 22 Luke 7:33–34 Matthew 7:24–27 Mark 10:45 Luke 19:10 If this message encouraged you, consider subscribing, sharing it with a friend, or inviting someone to your table this week.

What if the most valuable seats in your restaurant aren't in your dining room, but in your database?Samuel Bernstein has spent the last five years proving that loyalty isn't a punch card. It's a revenue model. As the founder of Table 22, Sam has helped more than 1,000 operators launch subscriptions, memberships, and bundled offers that routinely generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in high-margin revenue. In this conversation, we get into why most “clubs” fail, how to design offers rooted in what guests actually care about, and how to pressure-test whether your concept has a five-figure upside or a six-figure one. We also break down his systems, marketing playbooks, and AI-powered insights that turn creativity into consistency. If you're serious about building revenue you can forecast, and fund real growth with, this episode is your blueprint. To learn more about Table 22 and how they help restaurants build recurring revenue, visit table22.com._________________________________________________________Today's episode was brought to you by Square. In this episode of the Uploft Interior Design Podcast, I hosted a lightning round of listener questions and shared my practical interior design advice on three common dilemmas. First, I explained that kitchen islands should prioritize function over decoration, recommending useful items like trays, herbs, oils, and tools while keeping surfaces mostly clear. Next, I discussed dining room rugs, saying that formal dining rooms with hard floors should usually have a rug that extends 30–36 inches beyond the table, unless space, vents, or nearby rugs in open-concept layouts make it impractical. Finally, I gave my strong opinion on accent walls, arguing that they often look dated or unfinished and that it's better to commit to painting or wallpapering the entire room unless you're in a temporary space like a rental. In this week's Celebrate Your Story, I speak with Josh Schneps, CEO and co-publisher of Schneps Media, one of the largest networks of community media brands in the New York region. The company began in 1985 when his mother, Vicki Schneps, started a neighborhood newspaper at their Queens dining room table. Today it includes nearly 100 publications and sites serving communities across New York and Florida. At a time when many local newspapers are disappearing, Schneps Media prints about 600,000 papers each week. But its success isn't just about print. The company has built a broader platform centered on the communities it serves — combining local journalism with events, digital publications, and partnerships with businesses that want to reach people close to home. Josh also shared how new tools like artificial intelligence are helping his team monitor local conversations and surface story ideas. But he was clear about one thing: Technology may assist the work, but journalism still requires human judgment and responsibility. Our conversation reminded me that in a world increasingly dominated by global platforms, there is still value in focusing on the communities around us. Local media can still play a powerful role in bringing communities together.

The operators of Mary Mac's Tea Room can’t imagine Atlanta without the iconic eatery. The Midtown Atlanta staple is known for its origin story, as well as its classic Southern dishes, like fried chicken and collard greens. It’s a sought-after gathering place for Georgians as well as tourists, celebrities, and political dignitaries visiting from all over the world. The legendary diner has also made multiple appearances in television shows and films. It first opened in 1945, featuring a single dining room that accommodated up to 60 people. For a special edition of “Closer Look,” program host Rose Scott and the team visited the restaurant named by the State of Georgia as “Atlanta’s Dining Room,” as it celebrates 80 years of service. We hear from longtime employee Marion Mims and Mary Mac’s Chad Reynolds, and general manager Tina Rayner-Leftwich. They reflect on centering the staff, delivering top-notch customer service, the history of the restaurant, operating amid the pandemic, plus navigating and renovating after a roof collapse. Plus, the holiday season is underway. WABE’s H. Johnson narrates “A Christmas Carol.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we sit down with Celebrity Chef Neal Fraser as he pulls back the curtain on how Redbird—a 50-seat dining room attached to a cathedral—became one of LA's most dynamic and profitable hospitality businesses. He shares how focusing on events over covers gave him control, stability, and scale. We get into the systems he built, the mindset shift that made it possible, and why too many operators are white-knuckling restaurants that no longer serve them. This is for operators tired of hoping for Wednesday walk-ins—and ready to take back control of their business. To learn more about Redbird, visit https://redbird.la._________________________________________________________Free 5-Day Restaurant Marketing Masterclass – This is a live training where you'll learn the exact campaigns Josh has built and tested in real restaurants to attract new guests, increase visit frequency, and generate sales on demand. SHOW NOTES: Happy Halloween weekend! Once spooky season is officially behind us, it's time to turn things over and get ready for the real holiday hustle. We are sharing easy ways to prep your kitchen and dining areas for all the extra cooking, baking, entertaining, and guests you'll have. Plus, we're tackling exterior maintenance tips before the deep freeze sets in. Stay tuned to hear all this and more! - Holiday Kitchen Prep: We offer easy tips to prep your kitchen for the holidays, emphasizing deep cleaning the oven well in advance of a major feast and clearing out expired items from the fridge and freezer to make space for groceries and leftovers. - Refresh Your Dining Room: We provide quick and affordable ways to refresh your dining room, focusing on simple centerpieces and cozy lighting upgrades. - Making Space for Guests: If you're hosting holiday guests but don't have a spare room, find out how to create a warm overnight space using visual separation, high-quality air mattresses, and thoughtful bedside basics. - Winterizing Pipes: To prevent costly water damage from burst pipes, we discuss important winterizing tips for your outdoor space.   Q & A: - Mike from Little Rock, AR, is listing his house for sale after three years of piecemeal remodeling and wants to know the best way to advertise the improvements. He should create an inventory list of all that was done, including dates for things like energy-saving updates, as this detail is very appealing to buyers. - Marty in Cape May, NJ, has a tankless water heater and is frustrated that it takes almost five minutes for hot water to reach her kitchen sink. We explain that the issue is the physical distance the water must travel through the pipes, not the type of water heater. - Mark in Ohio is attempting a budget kitchen remodel and is considering IKEA cabinets, but is concerned about their durability. We confirm that our experience with IKEA kitchen cabinets suggests they are good quality, very well priced, and are notably easy to install. - Mike in Florida recently moved and had an AC technician recommend installing a UV light. We suggest that the technician was likely trying to upsell and give Mike some other useful tips besides relying on an expensive UV light. - Larry in Connecticut needs to replace two aging water heaters in his attic and asked whether a recirculating pump or a tankless heater is the better solution. We caution against adding a recirculating pump to the old units and note that while a tankless heater is small and efficient, Larry should consider whether one small unit could meet all his hot water needs.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? Title: Dining Room – Sharing MealsScripture Reading: Acts 2:42, Luke 7:34 Series: The 242 BlueprintThe third component of the church's blueprint found in Acts 2:42 is the sharing of meals. Jesus provides the model for how we should approach the table, teaching us how to E.A.T. E - Example of Jesus: The early church shared meals because Jesus constantly shared meals. He was so often at the meal table that his accusers called him a glutton and a drunkard.A - Accepting the Outsider: A key part of Jesus's example was accepting those who were considered outsiders, like tax collectors and sinners. When Jesus dines with a tax collector named Levi, it forces us to choose our reaction: the pride of the Pharisees who sneer at Jesus's choice of company, or the humility of Levi who recognizes that if Jesus welcomes sinners, he welcomes us. T - Table Task: Jesus used the table to carry out his discipleship mission. We are called to do the same by leveraging our tables for mission. We can do this by practicing spiritual disciplines, having spiritual conversations, and extending hospitality to others around our tables. The table is mission control for the family and a primary tool for discipleship.

Stephanie offers some creative solutions to enhance the space's aesthetic and functionality. Stephanie begins by recommending a new rug, suggesting that a larger, well-fitted rug can instantly make the room feel more expansive and cohesive. She advises selecting a rug made of wool for easy maintenance, especially considering the dining room's usage. For the dining set, Stephanie suggests a round table slightly larger than your current one to comfortably accommodate six chairs instead of four. This change could improve both the functionality and flow of the dining area. Stylistically, Stephanie encourages incorporating texture through your seating choices. Consider options like chairs with textured or patterned upholstery to add depth. A high-gloss finish on the table could provide a striking contrast and complement your existing mural and hutch. Moreover, she suggests adding a tall, collected item such as an antique vase to the table to create a focal point, balancing the room's visual interest. We hope these tips inspire a fresh and inviting atmosphere for your dining space. Best of luck with your redesign! - How to Decorate Also Mentioned: Shop Ballard Designs | Website stephanieraeinteriors.com | Designer Website @stephanieraeinteriors | Designer Instagram Please send in your questions so we can answer them on our next episode!
