Today's episode is the second half of my conversation with Trevor Boffone regarding his fascinating new book: TikTok Broadway — Musical Theatre Fandom in the Digital Age. If you missed part one of our discussion, you may want to catch up with that before listening to this one. Trevor Boffone is a Houston-based content creator and social media manager. His previous books include Renegades: Digital Dance Cultures from Dubsmash to TikTok and Latinx Teens: US Popular Culture on the Page, Stage, and Screen. He is also the editor of TikTok Cultures in the United States and the co-editor of five collections on Latinx popular culture and performance. Today, Trevor and I explore several massively popular viral TikTok trends relating the Broadway and West End musicals SIX, Heathers, Wicked, and Mamma Mia! And he also shares with us his observations of the many ways that TikTok has become a performance space of its own for fans of Broadway musicals. We also delve into the phenomenon of musicals that have been created on TikTok such as Ratatouille — The Musical and Bridgerton — The Musical. This all brings up some big questions relating to the very nature of theater itself, and of course, the future of TikTok. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! My guest this week is Trevor Boffone whose new book is titled TikTok Broadway — Musical Theatre Fandom in the Digital Age. I suspect that many of you, like me, are not on TikTok and may not immediately think this book will be of great interest to you. However, I encourage you to give it a listen because I think you will find what Boffone has to say in his book and in this discussion to be a fascinating and important aspect of recent Broadway history. I was quite captivated by it. On this episode, we look at the history of Social Media and its relationships with the Broadway musical and how from the very beginning of TikTok in America, Broadway musicals became a key aspect of even it most mainstream content. Jeff van de Zandt is a creative through and through: graphic designer by trade, Co-Owner and Director of Workshop Creative: a company dedicated to advertising theatre and live shows; and viral TikTok content creator.Jeff, having worked in large agencies, was over and overwhelmed by the fast paced, grind-centric environment he had spent much of his twenties in. He would leave and found his own agency in Workshop Creative with Ash, his best mate, tagging along shortly after. Under their Co-Ownership, Workshop Creative has been responsible for promoting various live shows including School of Rock: The Musical, Moulin Rouge, and even Disney's Hamilton.Jeff fell into the world of social media influencer-ship during one of Melbourne's lockdowns (who's counting, amirite?). Jeff originally was posting lip-syncing videos on the now defunct app DubSmash, until a friend of his told him to jump on the TikTok bandwagon. It only took Jeff three videos before his first viral hit featuring him lip-syncing to a remix of the infamous clash between a journalist named Andrew (or Adam according to Jordan) and PM Scott Morrison. Since then Jeff has seen his success on the platform grow leading him to work with the likes of Milo, DoorDash, and more.Get all the links mentioned in the episode here: bit.ly/246-JeffvandeZandtSKIP THROUGH THE EPISODE:00:24 - Guest introduction & The Milo Incident02:04 - Jeff's parents04:45 - Earliest memory & The Philippines10:53 - Lessons from childhood12:38 - Parental influences14:50 - Why theatre marketing?18:11 - Golden principles at Workshop Creative23:50 - TikTok: why Jeff is on it & what marketers miss30:34 - Why Jeff is a managed influencer32:44 - In-app shopping35:49 - Workshop Creative: how Ash got on board & the goal40:30 - What stays the same in theatre marketing42:23 - Drawbacks of specialisation44:40 - The future of Workshop Creative46:49 - Inspiration from other countries49:57 - Questions: the ideal & not so ideal (SHORT CLIP)52:35 - Book recommendation54:41 - Documentary recommendation56:01 - Guiding quote

Before Calboy would break into the rap game with hit songs like “Envy Me”, “Adam & Eve”, “Caroline” featuring Polo-G, and “Chariot” featuring Meek Mill and Lil Durk. Before Calboy would learn he was cut from Pop Smoke's posthumous album “Sho0t for the Stars, Aim for the Moon” and understandably voice his frustrations on Twitter. Before Calboy would have 152.9K followers on Twitter, 1.2 Million followers on Instagram, and over 712K subscribers on YouTube at the time of this recording. Up and coming Chicago-raised rapper Calboy has a melodic flow that's got people shouting out comps like he's the next Lil Durk. This South Side native's breakthrough hit; “Envy Me” racked up millions of views on YouTube after getting a since-deleted co-sign from colleague G-Herbo. Then, the track climbed to even greater heights thanks to a viral dance challenge that spawned across the Tik Tok platform, along with Dubsmash and Instagram.

Brendan Gahan is the Chief Social Officer of Mekanism, a full-service creative agency that specializes in social content. Prior to Mekanism, Brendan served as VP of Brand Strategy for Fullscreen and then founded social-first agency Epic Signal, which was acquired by Mekanism in 2015. Brendan and I pack a lot into this episode, focusing on why 2020 was a breakout year for short-form video. TikTok is the poster child for the short-form video movement, though it’s facing increased competition from clones (e.g. Byte and Triller in the U.S., Roposo and Moj in India) as well as established social platforms like YouTube (Shorts), Snapchat (Spotlight), and Facebook (Lasso, Instagram Reels, and Collab). So why the short-form video gold rush? Brendan argues the format’s popularity in China is a leading indicator for growth in the West. New platforms like TikTok offer creators a fun and easy approach to content creation and a chance to quickly grow their audience. And for tech companies, short-form video is the next battleground feature for both audience attention and monetization, given the opportunity to serve so many ad breaks between clips. Finally, we explore how the social media landscape is becoming increasingly fragmented as people begin skewing toward private channels like Discord, Community, and OnlyFans. We also evaluate Reddit’s acquisition of Dubsmash (which Brendan calls a “head scratcher”), and Brendan shares his 2021 social media predictions, specifically (1) the rise of dark social, (2) continued growth of live streaming and ecommerce, and (3) creator-driven influencer products.
