Jesus serves John 13:1-9 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” - John 13:1-9 (ESV) Philippians 2:3-11 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. - Philippians 2:3-11 (ESV) 2. Jesus intercedes John 17 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. 6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. Jesus redeems Colossians 1:13-14 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. - Colossians 1:13-14 (ESV) 4. Jesus celebrates Ephesians 2:1-10 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body[a] and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. Three verses we don't take out of context Job 25:6 how much less man, who is a maggot, and the son of man, who is a worm! (ESV) Ecclesiastes 10:19 A feast is made for laughter, wine makes life merry, and money is the answer for everything. (NIV) Hosea 3:1 And the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.” (ESV) Three verses we do take out of context Jeremiah 29:11 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (NIV) But what's the context? 10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.” Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (ESV) But what's the context? “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (ESV) Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (NKJV) But what's the context? I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Three verses we should take out of context Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (ESV) John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, (ESV) Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. Lady V's Devotional Episode  Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT) says:  The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time.  Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT)   Devotional   I'm a mother. And ever since my daughter was a baby, I had my ears tuned to hear her cry. And, although she is an adult now, I'm still concerned about her well-being.   So much so, I'll come running when she needs me! I want to know when something troubles her! I want to rescue her from any hurts or disappointments. I love her that much!  No doubt, love makes you want to rescue the ones you love!  So, when we read Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT), we are reminded of the Heavenly Father's love for us. The Heavenly Father tunes in to HIS children too. He's not a distant God. He is close enough to hear our cries!   Yet, there are times when things are going bad, we forget that He hears us. We forget that we matter to God. But we must not forget that the Lord's love is infinite towards us. He has concerns about everything that troubles us.   God is close!  The Word of God says in Proverbs 18:24 (AMP), that He's a true, loving friend who is reliable and sticks closer than a brother. So, not only is He your Heavenly Father, He's also a reliable friend. He's closer than you think.  Thus, He's the ONE you want to share your heart with. He's the ONE you call when you face trouble.  He's the ONE that comes to your rescue. And, He's the ONE who deserves our total devotion.  Beloved, don't go through troubles thinking that you are alone. When you feel like you're about to be swallowed up with trouble-- Remind yourself of Psalm 34. Then call out to the LORD. Ask for help! Then expect the LORD to come to your rescue.  Let's pray...  Heavenly Father,  We come to you in the Name of Jesus with thanksgiving in our hearts. Father God, we thank YOU that we can always depend on YOU. You will not neglect us nor will you ignore our cries for help.   We cast every care, every anxiety on YOU, because YOU care for us.   Thank YOU that YOU are our helper and we do not have to fear.   Thank YOU that we don't have to be anxious about anything. When we pray, YOU hear us and YOUR Peace guards our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.   We can come boldly to the throne of grace and receive mercy and grace to help in the time of need.    For this, we thank YOU LORD! We receive it done, and give YOU all the glory, in the Name of Jesus. Amen!  Grace and Peace to you all! "Be thankful for what you have." -- Most of us have heard this familiar phrase from a well-meaning friend at some point. The problem with this advice is that it turns our attention inward, toward our possessions. The world wants us to focus on what we have or don't have, but self-focus is thankless by nature. Studies show that acquiring more things and greater material wealth doesn't make us more content. In fact, the more we have, the more we want. As Christians, this kind of consumerism warps our view of God into our own personal Santa. The Bible reminds us repeatedly to give thanks and rejoice - why? Because God is good. When Christ is the source of our joy and contentment, we can live our lives for others. Our joy increases, and worry, fear, and doubt decrease. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. When newly-appointed ambassadors had an interview with him and when ambassadors returning from their posts for their first visit with him were leaving his office, he would test them. He would say, “You have to go over to my globe and prove to me that you can identify your country.” They would go over, spin the globe, and put their finger on the country to which they were sent. When Shultz' old friend, and former Senate Majority Leader, Mike Mansfield was appointed ambassador to Japan, even he was put to test. This time, however, Ambassador Mansfield spun the globe and put his hand on the United States, and he said “That's my country.” Years later, in 1993, Shultz related the story to Brian Lamb on C-SPAN's Book Notes, and he said “You know, I've told that story subsequently to all the ambassadors going out, and I say to them, ‘Never forget: you're over there in that country, but your country is the United States. You're there to represent us take care of our interests, and never forget it. You're representing the best country in the world.'” We get some instruction like that today from the apostle Paul in today's passage. As a person living the Jesus life in this world, how is one to conduct himself or herself as a citizen of Heaven, or as an “ambassador for Christ,” as Paul describes Jesus followers in another letter? Well, Paul relates to us three things today. The first thing he says is, “Follow my lead.” He says, “Brothers and sisters, imitate me, my conduct, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.” He's saying “follow our pattern,” (Timothy and Paul's). He's not claiming superiority here and he's not being egotistical about himself, he's just mentoring them in order to help them mature all the more into effective disciples of Jesus. That's how the rabbis and teachers taught in those days. “Watch me, do when I do,” they'd say. Paul understood this principle I came across in a leadership magazine a while back: “we teach what we know, we reproduce what we are.” In this case Paul is saying, like he said to another congregation called the Corinthians, “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.” Paul's life was that of God's obedient servant – walking in the footsteps of Jesus with humility, sacrificial love, and obedience to God's commands. And Paul is saying “So keep your eyes on me and on those who are mature in the faith, who are ‘walking the talk.'” Now, for me personally, I can't help but thinking about Pastor Homer Larsen, my predecessor, who was like that for me: instructing me and modeling for me along the way what it meant to be an ambassador for Christ and a preacher of the gospel. He was such a blessing in my life. Howard Hendricks, a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, wrote in his book for Promise Keepers entitled Men of Integrity, this wonderful little statement. He said, Every man should seek to have three individuals in his life: a Paul, a Barnabas, and a Timothy. First, a Paul: and older man who's willing to mentor you, to build into your life. Not someone who's smarter or more gifted than you, but somebody who's been down the road; somebody willing to share his strengths and weaknesses, everything he's learned in the laboratory of life; somebody whose faith you'll want to imitate. And you need a Barnabas: a brother, someone who loves you but is not impressed by you, who can hold you accountable. And then you need a Timothy: a younger man into whose life you're building. Here's Paul, he is the quintessential mentor to Timothy, building into life of his protégé, affirming, encouraging, teaching, correcting, directing, and praying; three important relationships for any Christian. It's usually track season this time of year. It's fun to watch the jumpers and the shot putters and the javelin throwers do their thing, but the events that I especially enjoy watching are the running events. Whether it's the hundred-yard dash or the long-distance running, I find it very exciting to watch these athletes pushing themselves and straining to put in their best run. Well the apostle Paul takes us to the track in today's passage as he describes his life with Jesus. He uses running and track terms to describe that life. Paul obviously liked athletics, because he refers to them in some of his other letters as well – uses them as illustrations. Let me quickly set this portion of text up for us before we “take a run” through it. Prior to these verses Paul has written about: since he met Jesus in his conversion, he has set aside counting on personal religious achievements to make himself right with God. He's let go of those spiritual trophies he built his life upon in order to receive the righteousness and rescue that only Jesus Christ can give a person. He also testified that he wants to spend the rest of his days knowing and serving Jesus and His kingdom cause. His desire is to know the power of Christ's resurrection and his own and to share in his suffering, and he looks forward to standing with Jesus on the great day of resurrection, the grand finale. Now, in our verses for today, Paul continues this line of thought with this statement: “not that I've already obtained these things,” (meaning received), the resurrection of the dead – resurrection day hasn't arrived yet – or “not that I'm already perfect,” (and perfect actually means “maturity” here), “but I press on to make it my own because Christ Jesus has made me His own.” Paul is saying “I know I have not arrived at the resurrection, or to full maturity, in my relationship with Jesus, or in my serving Him effectively.” I find this to be a humble, realistic critique of one's life. I haven't arrived, I'm still on the way. And then Paul says again, for emphasis to the folks, “Brothers and sisters, I don't consider that I made it on my own.” It's his way of modeling for them the right attitude, he's emphasizing something here: If I, your teacher, spiritual leader, pastor, one you respect and looked up to, think this way about myself, then you should adopt the same perspective of yourself. Stay away from thinking of yourself as having “spiritually arrived”. That's nothing but arrogance and it's prideful and dangerous to your spiritual health. Remember that pride does come before a fall. Friend, the fact is we never will arrive at full maturity until we're standing with Jesus on resurrection day. Like the crops in the field, we're always ripening for the great harvest to come. Paul says now, “Though I haven't arrived, I press on to make it my own.” Now, this is runners' language. The image given to us is that of a runner who's pressing on, pressing forward, to complete his or her race. This is not a tepid, passive, halfhearted Christianity that Paul's describing for us here. This is an all-out run. The seasoned athlete knows that the race isn't won or lost until the end has been reached, so she keeps running. I remember, earlier on in my adult life, I ran a couple of marathons myself. I found each one to be very tiring and challenging, and even grueling at certain moments, but I kept pushing ahead because I was determined to get to that finish line. Even when I was hardly able to put one foot in front of another, I pressed on until 26.3 miles were behind me. That's the imagery in this statement of Paul's, as he talks about “pressing on” in the Christian life. Paul goes on to say that as he keeps running to complete his race of faith with Jesus, he...

We see death counts on the news, we hear tragic stories from the hospitals and interviews with people of lost loved ones. And all of this can cause and uneasiness deep within. I was talking with a friend the other day, he said watching all of this made her realize that, “I can die sooner than I thought I would.” People wonder, “what if I get this virus and I die, what will become of me?” And according to the experts that could happen to any one of us. With that in mind, I would ask you to consider this personal question: are you at a place where you know for certain that if you died today you would go to Heaven? Some people might respond, “Well I honestly don't know, I'm not sure anybody can know that for sure.” Others might say that they hope so because they're trying to live a good, moral life, but they're not really sure what's good enough so they are hoping God “grades on a curve”. Well, our text today addresses this question for us. The opening statement of chapter 3 actually expresses a concern for our spiritual safety. Let's look at it again – Paul writes, “Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.” This statement frames the whole of chapter 3: rejoice in the Lord, in the Lord alone, in the Lord Jesus and what He's done for you. Now, why would Paul go out of his way to remind them of this? He tells us: because it's safe for you. There are alternatives to that, you know. I can rejoice and myself, my accomplishments, my abilities, my own spirituality, my goodness, my morality. Paul reminds us, though, that to keep your eyes on Jesus is the way to go. Rejoice in Him and Him alone, especially when it comes to eternal matters. Salvation safety is to be found only in Christ alone, because I want you to be safe in Christ. Here's a fact: there are people, even today, who will tell you other things, wrong things. It's good to beware of them. They may come off as experts and be likable and impress you with their thinking, but they can be dangerous for your spiritual health. Remember when the cigarette companies were forced to put warning labels on cigarette packages, alerting people that smoking can be dangerous to your health? Well, there are some people who need a label attached to them; their thinking can be dangerous to your spiritual health, and if you buy into what they tell you, it can be deadly for you. You see, theology and doctrine really matter. So Paul proceeds to give us a heads up about dangerous people who could come in and wreck your life with dangerous teachings. That was the concern for the Philippians – he gives these people that he is concerned about coming in a label. He says look out for these people they're like dogs. They're evildoers, they're mutilators of the flesh with circumcision on the brain. What they teach may sound right in your ears, but beware of them. What comes from their mouths is dangerous to your spiritual health and salvation. So, who are these people Paul's talking about? It seems that there were some Jewish Christians, who were referred to as Judaizers, who were coming into churches after Paul would leave the community and say that Jesus is nice and what He did on the cross is great, but there's still more for you to do than simply trust in Him. For instance, if you're non-Jew you needed to some things like get circumcised and followed the other Jewish practices – dietary laws and so on. Then you'll be a bona fide, saved Christian, and in a right relationship with God. Obviously, these people were very convincing in their arguments and caused all sorts of spiritual dilemmas in the church. So Paul kicks out after them in his letter to the Galatians; you really get it there. Paul had seen the good news...

Yes, it has its flaws, but those flaws are few in comparison to the benefits and blessings I've received as a citizen. As you know, part of being a citizen is not only receiving blessings and privileges, it also involves responsibility and duty. It means paying taxes, participating in our community, serving our country, and being respectful and honest. Participate in the country. I have a dual citizenship, by the way. Maybe you do too. Anyone who is a believer in Jesus Christ has another citizenship far greater than any other. It's heavenly citizenship. And, as a citizen of God's kingdom, I also have received many spiritual blessings and privileges that I enjoy: a restored relationship with God, forgiveness for my sins, a cleansed conscience, the promise of eternity. And I also have duties and responsibilities as a citizen of this heavenly kingdom. That's what the apostle Paul tells us in our passage for today from Philippians. Let me just set this up for you little bit: Paul's been telling these folks of how he's rejoicing because the gospel's advancing, even where he is, and he's in a prison in Rome. He reports in his letter that he's been using his uncomfortable circumstances to bring Christ Jesus to the soldiers guarding him and that the whole Praetorian Guard has now heard about Jesus from Paul. And not only that, the Christians in Rome who had been kind of shy are now sharing the gospel of Christ more boldly, as they're inspired by Paul. And Paul tells these Philippians that he's all in when it comes to the gospel, “for to me to live is Christ, to die is gain.” Now he turns the conversation away from himself, today, in this passage to the Philippian Christians (and to us as well) as he writes, “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel; conduct yourselves in a way that honors Jesus your King and represents Him well in this world of ours.” Paul was actually talking citizenship. The verb, “let your manner of life be”, is literally “live as citizens”. Live as citizens worthy of the gospel, he says, the gospel of Christ. He's telling us it's important to conduct ourselves as good citizens of the kingdom of Christ. We're His representatives in the world. You do that, first of all, with your character, and then also with your conduct. Paul keeps going, he says Conduct yourself this way so that whether I come to you or am absent I may hear these things about you. That you are living life in a manner worthy of the gospel; that you're living like our king Jesus would live, with a loving attitude, with kindness, and mercy, and grace, and truthfulness, and goodness , and integrity, and humility, and compassion towards others, and obedience to the great commandment to love God and love neighbor. Because how you act does say a lot, it tells the real story. He says it's also a continual standing firm in striving for the faith of the gospel. We're to be evangelistic, called to spread the gospel of Jesus to other people. To intentionally, boldly, and gently sprinkle our conversations with others about Jesus and what He did for us at the cross and tomb. To tell others the good news of God's kingdom plan of salvation. To invite people to turn to Christ and receive the forgiveness of sins. Paul says as you're doing those two things, it's so important that you do them together, as the church. It's too hard to do this alone. He says, “I want to hear that you're standing firm in one spirit, striving side-by-side for the faith of the gospel.” That striving side-by-side is a term from the world of athletics. He's talking teamwork — everyone working together as a team for the advancement of the gospel in your community. We need to stay connected to one another, doing His work together, not only as a show of strength, but it's a source of needed strength...
