The work you do farming, or bringing small farmers and shoppers together, is vitally important. Brent Preston spoke at InTents: The Farmers Market Conference 2019 about his time as an organic farmer, the effects of farming on the environment and how farmers and consumers can change those. His book The New Farm: Our Ten Years on the Front Lines of the Good Food Revolution, shined a light on the complexity of our food systems. Brent continues to do the good work, on his farm in Southern Ontario, Canada, and as current president of Farmers for Climate Solutions. This episode was recorded and originally broadcast in March 2019 and we think it's still relevant and important, for long time listeners to review and newer followers to discover. It's a pleasure to share it with you again now. Today's episode of Tent Talk, the Farmers Market Podcast, is supported by the national Farmers Market Coalition.

Over the past decade, there has been steady growth across the farmers market industry nationwide, with new farmers market locations popping up in communities of all shapes and sizes. And, many park and recreation professionals have seen this growth firsthand. With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic increasing barriers for access to healthy food for so many across the country, park and recreation professionals have been working hard to find ways to meet these needs. One way to meet the needs of a community has been through farmers markets. And, whether an agency is hosting their own or partnering with a local market, farmers markets provide countless benefits. The Farmers Market Coalition is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening farmers markets across the United States so that they can serve as community assets while providing real income opportunities for farmers. The Farmers Market Coalition aims to benefit farmers, consumers and the community as a whole, and we’re thrilled to be joined on the show today by their Training and Technical Assistance Director Darlene Wolnik, to talk all about the great work they’re doing in building healthier communities through farmers markets. Darlene has been a national advocate and trainer for farmers markets for more than two decades. The type of guidance the Farmers Market Coalition has been providing local farmers markets throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to safely manage these spaces. How farmers markets and parks and recreation are aligned in their missions. How park and recreation professionals who work for an agency that may not have a farmers market can leverage partnerships to start one or assist with an existing local market. Farmers Markets could be the best thing to happen to Agriculture this century. Some will argue that point because they don’t see how conventional agriculture with large scale commodity production, supplying supermarkets and restaurant chains, benefits from the over 8,600 local farmers markets that have sprung up all over. The simple answer is that the markets have been the catalyst for the Farm to Table movement-triggering curiosity, understanding and respect in the ways our food is grown. Most everyone that shops at their local farmers market also shop at supermarkets and eat at restaurants where they are becoming accustomed to seeing information about the farms and farming systems that produced fresh, canned, jars and frozen foods. These conversations matter a great deal and are added incentive for food producers and farmers to share the story of how they are constantly improving. Additionally Farmers Markets foster a community spirit with direct interaction between the farm and the community. Don't miss visiting a Farmers Market this week. It is the 20th Annual Farmers Market celebration. This year, the Farmers Market Coalition is highlighting the important role that farmers markets play in fostering entrepreneurship: providing a low-barrier to entry, maximum return on investment, and immediate feedback on new products for small businesses. The executive director of the Farmers Market Coalition Ben Feldman joins the Farm to Table Talk to celebrate the progress and the future of the markets we love. #LoveMyMarket www.farmersmarketcoalition.org

For this "snack-sized" episode, we’re joining the Farmers Market Coalition to recognize National Farmers Market Week! This is a great time to talk speak with Ben Feldman, the Policy Director at FMC about farmers, because there is a ton of news about agricultural economics right now. But before we talk about local markets, we step back and take in the bigger picture. On episode two of Meat + Three, we reported a story on tariffs and the escalating trade tensions between China and the U.S. – and how farmers were already feeling their effects. We spoke to Loren Puette of ChinaAg, a market intelligence company that focuses on the ag markets of China. At the time, he said we were far from being a full-fledged trade war, but this week we asked Loren "What about now? Has a trade war begun?" His response was yes. “The trade dispute escalated into a full blown trade war on July 6th after both sides imposed 25% tariffs on a variety of imported goods. Chief among them were U.S. soybeans," wrote Puette. We bring you a story about one of the biggest casualties of the trade war – a stranded cargo ship off the coast of China carrying soybeans worth $20 million. Then, we explain how the "farmer bailout" that President Trump has proposed is set to provide temporary relief to commodity farmers, but will have little effect on specialty farmers that sell direct-to-consumer. On the other hand, Feldman explains that specialty farmers are able to weather economic fluctuations, because they get better prices on crops through direct sales. Love Meat + Three?
