Send us your feedback — we're listeningPsalm 91:1 — Jesus, Draw My First Breath of the New Day Into Your Shelter and Quiet Every Fear Before the Morning Comes Welcome to Daily Prayer with Reverend Ben Cooper, live from London — reaching Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Spain. Psalm 91:1 (NIV): “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Salmo 91:1 — “Aquele que habita no abrigo do Altíssimo descansará à sombra do Todo-Poderoso.” “The Lord is my Shepherd; I lack nothing.” / “O Senhor é o meu Pastor; nada me faltará.” James 4:8 (NIV): “Come near to God and He will come near to you.” Tiago 4:8 — “Aproximem-se de Deus, e Ele se aproximará de vocês.” Jesus, as this new day begins in silence and darkness, I draw my first breath into Your abrigo seguro. Jesus, recebe meu coração nesta hora. Before the morning comes, calm the fears that rise early and quiet the thoughts that try to run ahead of Your peace. Jesús, toma mi espíritu y tráelo cerca de Tu presencia. Jesus, bring my heart under Your sombra, where rest becomes possible before the world awakens. Let Your shelter be the first place my spirit enters today. Jesus, guarda minha mente dos pensamentos que chegam cedo demais. Jesús, calma mi alma y ordénala con Tu paz. Jesus, as the night fades and the new day waits at the edge of the horizon, steady me. Let no anxious expectation take root. Replace worry with confiança, fear with descanso, and uncertainty with esperança. Jesus, enche meu coração da Tua paz profunda antes que a luz apareça. Jesús, llena mi respiración de Tu calma. Jesus, meet me in this early hour. Draw me near. Hold my thoughts still. Surround me with the assurance that You are already in my tomorrow, already in my steps, already in the hours I have not yet lived. Jesus, fica comigo enquanto o dia desperta. Jesús, camina conmigo hacia la mañana. Jesus, draw my first breath into Your shelter. Jesus, quiet my fears before the morning comes. Jesus, fill this early hour with Your peace. Amém. Prenatal substance use is often misunderstood, oversimplified, and met with stigma instead of support. In this conversation, Christina Dent and Meghann Perry explore the complex realities facing mothers who use substances during pregnancy—from trauma and addiction to healthcare barriers and the fear of criminalization. Together, they reflect on the importance of compassionate care, the power of bonding and attachment, and what it looks like to invest in families so both moms and babies can thrive. This episode invites us to move beyond judgment and toward curiosity, connection, and systems that heal rather than harm. About Meghann: Meghann Perry, CARC, RCPF, is an award-winning keynote speaker, storyteller, theatre educator, curriculum developer, harm reductionist and addiction recovery coach. She creates innovative learning experiences blending Theatre, Storytelling, and Coaching and is an international educator of the behavioral health workforce. Salvation is not merely a rescue from peril but the restoration of our true selves. The post 176: First Breath appeared first on Become Good Soil.
"You should not be surprised when I say, 'You must be born again.'" – Jesus of Nazareth Dear Friends, Advent is upon us—a season not merely of waiting but of planting, where the seed of hope is buried deep in the soil of time. It is the prologue to Christmas when the Author Himself stepped onto the stage of His own story. But like all great stories, this one is layered. Beneath the glitter and sentiment of the season lies a truth so profound it shakes the foundations of our reality: that life springs from death, joy from suffering, and rebirth from what we thought was the end. Have you ever considered what it truly means to be born again? Cast aside, for a moment, the tattered clichés and the defensive armor we often wrap around such words. To be born again is not a slogan or a doctrine but the startling, living reality of God's relentless affection—an affection that invades every shadowed corner of the human heart. The Incarnation of Christ is not merely an event in history; it is the eternal declaration that God has chosen to make Himself known not in distant thunder but in the fragile cry of a child. And yet, it is more. It is an invitation—a call to enter into a union so mysterious, so vivid, that we find ourselves remade, again and again, until we come to know the safety and intimacy that Christ Himself knew with the Father. This, my friends, is the heart of the process of salvation. It is not merely a rescue from peril but the restoration of our true selves, rooted in divine love and revealed in our human relationships, by day and by decade. Every celebration of the Incarnation is pregnant with the invitation to come, taste, and see. And here lies the wonder: this salvation is not a far-off promise. It is here, now, within reach of the humble and the weary, waiting to be received by you and by me. This Advent, let us pause amidst the noise and receive this gift afresh. Let us prepare to experience the miracle of new birth, of first breath, as we are drawn ever deeper into the life of the One who has come to make all things new. For the Kingdom, Cherie and Morgan

This week, Asia is joined by Lisette Ros, a Dutch performance artist who investigates daily conventions and breaks down everyday behaviors. Lisette approaches her performances as experiments or opportunities to research and collect data about her body, all in the attempt to better understand her fluid, queer identity and consider the question, “Who is she, in the midst of it all?” Lisette first explains how she familiarizes herself with any performance location and begins the process of research (1:22). She then reviews how her work "Reframing Conventions" shifted when performed in various locations including the Red Light District (03:56). Asia questions if and how the question of safety comes up in Lisette's work (13:15) and Lisette admits that her work does not embrace comfort, in favor of searching for moments of vulnerability and exposure. Lisette later describes her My Self series, which currently includes five performances: The Fetus, The Other, The Body, The Bladder, and The First Breath (14:56). All five contribute to Lisette's efforts to deconstruct her slippery sense of identity and question when and how we come to recognize and make sense of our bodies and the worlds that live within them. In an effort to better understand her "blood" and family line, Lisette will begin to develop the sixth performance of the My Self series: The Unfamiliar Roots (26:54). This project will take her to Indonesia (where her grandfather was born) to participate in a program at Melati Suryodarmo's Studio Plesungan. Before they close, Asia and Lisette discuss the axolotl, a fascinating creature that Lisette was recently researching in Mexico City. The two reflect on the ways that the axolotl's resistance to evolution both challenges and inspires Lisette's practice and investment in "being in flux." Follow Lisette Ros online at www.lisetteros.com and on Instagram @lisetteros. You can also watch many of Lisette's performances on PerformVu! Is it true that according to Genesis 2:7 a human life does not begin until it takes its first physical breath?
Guest Host: Tim Barnett Tim and Alan make a quick pro-life case then chat about responses to some popular pro-choice memes that claim life begins at first breath, a fetus is only a potential human, you can freeze an embryo because it isn't alive, saving one newborn vs. five embryos, no brain activity means legally dead, if you think abortion is wrong, don't get one, and more. Topics: Responding to Pro-Choice Memes (00:00) Life begins at first breath. (14:00) You can only ban safe abortions. (25:00) An acorn is only a potential tree, so a fetus is only a potential human. (29:00) You can freeze an embryo but not a baby because an embryo isn't alive. (35:00) Would you save one newborn or five frozen embryos? In this episode we continue the discussion on the pro-abortionists' view that a baby isn't actually human until it draws it's first breath. There are so many reasons why that thinking is such bad logically and scientifically and biblically. We further delve into those reasons in this episode. Breathe First Breath Genesis 1:2, 2:7 Psalm 104:30, “When you give them your breath, life is created…” Genesis 1:1-2 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” · ruah (Hebrew) – breath, wind, spirit · pneuma (Greek) – breath, wind, spirit You were made for Breath! 1. Life takes your BREATH Formless and empty. Darkness. Deep waters. Three Important Reminders: · Life is SHORT Psalm 90:10, "The length of our days is 70 years -- or 80 if we have the strength" · Life is UNCERTAIN Isaiah 43:2, “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” · Life is HARD 2. God Gives BREATH v2, “And the Spirit (breath/wind) of God was hovering…” Hovering Truths: · He is near. · He is patient and present. · He is not afraid. 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Isaiah 41:13, “For I hold you by your right hand—I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don't be afraid. I am here to help you.” 3. Catch your BREATH Job 33:4, “For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

This week we are processing what we learned, and what we think is important for parents to know, about baby's first breath and neonatal resuscitation. While it may sound scary, we go into the physiological process baby's lungs go through immediately after birth, how that can be disrupted, and how midwives and parents can help support it. Our favorite neonatal resuscitation resource - Karen Strange

Nazir Afzal prosecuted dozens of men responsible for grooming young girls during his time as head of the CPS in the North West of England. His role was dramatised in BBC1's harrowing Three Girls series which told the story of three teenage girls who were abused by a gang of Asian men. He is a strong advocate for women and his choice of book reflects this. It's the late journalist Sue Lloyd Roberts' The War on Women. Novelist Maggie Gee has written many books including My Driver, My Cleaner and The Flood. She has chosen The First Breath by Olivia Gordon which she describes as a rather neglected book on the lives of pre-term babies, their parents and the doctors and nurses in a premature babies unit. She calls it "riveting, touching and informative." Harriett's choice is Waiting for the Barbarians by JM Coetzee, the story of a magistrate in an unnamed colonial town on the edge of the British Empire where the indigenous people are referred to as 'barbarians'. These books provoke some very interesting discussion.
