Would you move abroad to reach FI faster? That wasn't Brooklin Nash's original goal when he left the US and began freelancing from afar. But now, years later, he realizes how much of a leg up he has financially by going all-in on “geo arbitrage.” He's saving a boatload in Guatemala, paying less to live the life he loves, and enjoying a tiny tax bill. Now in his mid-thirties, he's already Coast FIRE and works when and where he wants. But Brooklin's money story didn't start so stable. Being raised in a home with “risky” finances, to say the least (pyramid schemes, gambling, etc.), left him scarred and constantly worrying about keeping enough money in the bank. Thankfully, he changed his ways and realized that making money, rather than just saving every cent, was crucial to becoming financially free. He's paid off a significant sum in student loans and did it all while making a very meager income. Then, he scaled from freelancing abroad to building an entire business, making a phenomenal income while living in a low-cost-of-living area. He's living his dream life outside the US, making more money than Americans at home. Imagine what THAT can do for your FIRE number! In This Episode We Cover Using “geo arbitrage” to save more, invest more, and lower your cost of living An almost unbelievable income tax exclusion Americans abroad can access How Brooklin paid off $80,000 in student debt (even on a lower income) Turning your freelancing work into a full-blown (and VERY high-paying) business Why the optimal FIRE lifestyle may actually include working a few hours a day And So Much More! In this episode, Emily interviews Dr. Amanda, a tenure-track professor at a small college in the Midwest. While a postdoc, Amanda listened to career advice from R1 university faculty, but ultimately decided their path was not for her. Instead, she employed geographic arbitrage to maximize her academic salary while minimizing her cost of living. This choice enabled her to quickly pay off her student loans, and now she is considering buying a house. Amanda gives great career and financial advice and encouragement to current graduate students and postdocs, particularly emphasizing the importance of deciding for yourself what your career and personal priorities are.
It is a very special day at the Hippocratic Hustle, as I interview our first ever male guest! He is one of the superheroes of physicians and finance. Please welcome, Physician on FIRE, the anonymous anesthesiologist who started the very popular blog by the same name. What exactly is F.I.R.E.? How can we calculate our annual expenditures? What about projections and inflation? What should we do about those pesky student loans? How can we double our money? How long will it take me to really be able to retire? So many questions! Not to mention, when we talk about finances, it's all quite confusing. Have no fear though, Physician on FIRE (PoF) shares his extensive knowledge on topics about financial independence (F.I.) and retiring early (R.E.). He is an anesthesiologist who attained financial independence at the age of 39, and now teaches other physicians to do the same. Listen in as PoF and I discuss why we should consider F.I, the benefits and tips to achieving it, and if your goal is to retire early, we have you covered there too! In this episode, you will learn: What exactly is FIRE and how you can apply it to change your life Why you should consider financial independence early in your career and start investing now How you can determine your annual expenditures now and in the future How much you really need to save to live the lifestyle you want in retirement What is the rule of 72 and how will it help you achieve financial independence How PoF's methods can help you achieve true work-life balance as a physician How can physicians specifically work towards attaining FIRE Should you pay off those low interest school loans and mortgages now What does R.E. (retire early) exactly mean for Physician on FIRE. What exactly is Geographic Arbitrage and how you can use it to your advantage Links we discussed in the show: If you want to know more about Physician on FIRE, you can visit his website. You can also follow him on Facebook and Twitter. Also, join the online community Physicians on FIRE. If you also want to read more about the Rule of 72, you can check it out on Physician on FIRE's site as well. If you're looking to dive deeper into the world of financial independence, you can check out Mr. Money Mustache's website and Choose FI's website. Lastly, you can also look into The White Coat Investor Website and follow their White Coat Investor Blog too. Quotes: “A lot of people don't know what they spend. You have to keep track of it.” “It's about having the ability to live the way you want to - with or without the paycheck.” “Financial independence affords physicians the opportunity to practice medicine the way they want.” “I think retirement is when you don't rely on income.” Special thanks to this week's sponsors: Larry Keller from Physician Financial Services and the Brand New Course from the White Coat Investor, Fire Your Financial Advisor! It’s been a while since I posted a new Financial Independence Podcast episode but I’m excited to share one with you today! Mr. and Mrs. 1500 from 1500Days.com joined me live at FinCon in Dallas to interview the Physician on FIRE! We sadly only had 25 minutes to record so it’s a short interview but it’s a fun one. If you ever wanted to hear Mrs. 1500 rap, this episode is definitely for you :) And if you ever wanted to hear what a podcast sounds like when two out of the three hosts are ridiculously hungover, this one is also for you (see if you can figure out which host is the sensible one). I’ll be back to my longer, more in-depth interviews soon but for now, I hope you enjoy this wild and entertaining conversation with the Physician on FIRE! Highlights: How to separate your identity from your job Using geographic arbitrage to spend less while getting paid more (without ever leaving the United States) How to deal with sunk costs What it’s like finding FIRE after already achieving financial independence Plus, an amazing (and original) gangsta rap verse performed by Mrs. 1500!
030 | In Today’s Podcast we cover: How Alan Donegan of PopUp Business School has turned starting businesses on its head similar to how FI has turned personal finance on its head and caused us to think differently How starting a business is truly one of the ‘pillars of Financial Independence’ Brad and Jonathan started up their own business with ChooseFI based on similar principles to what Alan is teaching You need to know what you’re running to in FI and not just what you’re running from with your old job Alan’s FI journey and his goal to get to FI by the age of 40 How Alan was nearly scared off from starting a business by the course he took through the British government with Business Link Started up PopUp Business School with his business partner Simon Why Alan believes you don’t need any startup capital, business plans, etc. to start a business Story of a popup café/restaurant in London and how this person didn’t spend a dollar to get started The value of networking and genuine human connection What stops you from starting a business? Money is the biggest issue. Confidence and scared that it will fail are two others and knowing what to do on a day-to-day basis The value of learning with no risk 5 ways to start a business with no risk #1: What can you get for free? Actionable steps: Search on Google “where can I get X for free” #2: What can you borrow? Story of minivan rental business and how they borrowed the minivan and saved 99% of the original business plan amount The only way to truly test your business and get an honest response is if you ask for a sale and see if they buy #5: Sell Your Value Before You Create It: Sell the idea first, get the money, then produce the content/product Story of Dennis selling lasagna and collecting the money first in order to purchase the ingredients #3: Could you barter instead of using money? In order to feel comfortable asking for things, focus on relationships and giving value. We all have skills that others would value #4: Sell stuff you already have Another option is to sell someone else’s stuff and split the profits!
