Cynthia McKinney has made a career of speaking her mind and challenging authority. With her opinions, actions, and even her sense of style, McKinney has inspired both admiration and controversy. McKinney´s political career began unofficially in 1986 when her father, Georgia State Representative Billy McKinney, put her name on the ballot as a write-in. Cynthia McKinney was living in Jamaica at the time and did not take the matter seriously; still, she garnered a large percentage of votes without even trying. Two years later, McKinney ran for and won the seat, creating the first father/daughter combination to serve together in the Georgia State House of Representatives. Cynthia immediately began making her own mark, defying House dress codes for women by wearing trousers instead of dresses. She spoke out against the first Persian Gulf War, and despite being in the House with her father, she often disagreed and voted against him. In 1992, McKinney won a seat in the US House of Representatives in Georgia´s newly created 11th district. She was the first African-American woman to represent Georgia in the US Congress. McKinney became Secretary of her Democratic freshman class and was placed on both the Agricultural Committee and the International Relations Committee. Her gold tennis shoes and braided hairstyle became her trademarks, and effectively raised her profile on a House floor dominated by white men. Though a Democrat during President Clinton's tenure, McKinney voted against NAFTA, showing that she was not one to simply follow the Party line. McKinney worked hard in Washington to clean up pollution in her district and improve its rural roads. During her second term, McKinney earned distinctive committee assignments with the National Security Committee and the International Relations Committee's International Operations and Human Rights Subcommittee. A supporter of a Palestinian State in Israel-occupied territory, she sparked controversy by criticizing American policy in the Middle East. After the 9/11 attacks, McKinney suggested the President might have had prior knowledge of 9/11. The criticism she received from this highly controversial idea probably contributed to her defeat in the 2002 election; however, she ran for the seat again and was re-elected in 2004. Between terms in office, McKinney traveled the country and Europe, speaking against the war in Iraq war and also about her 2002 defeat, which she attributed to Republicans being organized to “cross over” to vote against her in the Democratic primaries. Her career, including this episode of her defeat, was made into a documentary film titled American Blackout. Once back in office, she continued her criticism of the Bush administration on the first anniversary of the 9/11 Commission Report by gathering victims' families and intelligence experts together on panels to address the flaws in the report and critique its recommendations regarding foreign and domestic policy. Believing the government should not keep secrets from the people, McKinney introduced legislation to release the documents related to the death of Tupac Shakur and twice submitted a bill to release the sealed documents pertaining to Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. McKinney was very active in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and a vocal critic of the government's response. When Democratic Party leaders encouraged a boycott of a Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate the Preparation for and Response to Hurricane Katrina, she chose to participate and submitted her own report on the matter. In 2007, McKinney left the Democratic Party to become a Presidential Candidate for the Green Party.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Carl Sprayberry was a former failed candidate for the Georgia State House and a lunatic. Following his major loss, he took to X to regularly post threats to Donald Trump's life, along with calls for violence at Mar-a-Lago. It has now been revealed that Carl is a child predator who has been running a multi-agency human trafficking ring involving children. Next, Mike Waltz has been demoted from National Security Advisor and pivoted to UN Ambassador. The question is: Why did Trump make this move, and who will fill the vacancy? Finally, the Ukrainian mineral deal has been reached, and to end the show, we've got lots of funny things.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 26: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: In an April deposition in the New York Civil Fraud case, Trump told the Attorney General's office that he wasn't running his company because he was too busy saving the world from nuclear holocaust and saving millions of lives because he was the only one to think of DEALING with North Korea. You're WELCOME LOSERS. This underscores a part of Trump's insanity that it sometimes seems like we have gotten used to: he really DOES think he's the first person to ever think of something, or to DO something, that everybody else in his position did as long ago as 1946. I never hear him say something like this – “Only I saved millions of lives because only I dealt with North Korea” without thinking of what the idiot director Roger DeBris in Mel Brooks' movie “The Producers” says about the play itself – quote – “I never knew that the ‘THIRD REICH' meant Germany! I mean it's just DRENCHED with historical goodies like that.” That's Trump. Still, Trump didn't save Peter Navarro, who goes to trial – but only after failing to grab a paper “TRUMP LOST” sign held an inch over his head. And he didn't save Rudy Giuliani, who goes to trial for slandering Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman and hours later went on radio and slandered Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman AGAIN. And he didn't save Kevin McCarthy who will now have to start an impeachment without holding a vote – which he once violently criticized – or hold the vote and LOSE IT. The knives are out for Fani Willis. The Georgia State Senate Majority Leader now threatens her with reprimands, sanctions, hearings, defunding and removal. His name is Gooch and he's from Lumpkin County. But the Georgia State HOUSE Speaker, Jon Burns, another Republican, says trying to defund Willis violates separation of powers. With no hyperbole: I worry for Speaker Burns' safety. And the podcast celebrates a big milestone with a big thank you to you: the August audience was 3,000,000! B-Block (21:44) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: McConnell freezes again. Nice of his staffers to leave him out there and ask reporters to yell at him. And the brewing story about how if Mitch goes, the Democratic Kentucky governor may defy a new law and appoint a Democrat in his place. Plus the Proud Boys sentencings that weren't. (25:18) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Anti-pickleball millionaire Holly Peterson has an unexpected feature in her home: her own pickleball court. The guy who claimed he killed Bin Laden got arrested and replied by claiming he killed bin Laden. And why even in these days of loose ethics in cable news, MSNBC must fire primetime anchor Stephanie Ruhle. C-Block (32:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Poor puppy Thomas: attacked, left to die on the train tracks, and still wagging as humans treat him. (33:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's the 26th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, which was also the day cable news jumped the shark and the shark was in the Rubicon.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Join us today as we talk to Attorney Tanya Miller who is running for Georgia State House in district 62.
Joining the show today to talk about the legacy of the late Senator Johnny Isakson is his former Chief of Staff, Joan Kirchner Carr. Senator Isakson passed away December 19th after a long and storied career in Georgia politics. Isakson is the only Georgia politician to successfully win elections for the State House, State Senate, United States Congress and United States Senate. A member of the Georgia Air National Guard and graduate of University of Georgia, Isakson ran a successful real estate firm that at its peak had over 1,000 agents working for it. After an unsuccessful and then successful bid for the Georgia State House in 1974 and 1976, Isakson was the Republican candidate for Governor in 1990, which he would go on to lose to Democrat Zell Miller. Joan talks about his relationship with Governor Miller after that election and the now rare bipartisan working relationship they formed. In 1992 he would run successfully for a seat in the Georgia Senate, where he served one term, before unsuccessfully running for the United States Senate in 1996 – a race that eventually saw Democrat Max Cleland elected with a 1 point margin. Isakson then ran in a 1999 special election to replace then US Congressman and Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, which Isakson would handedly win. Finally, he ran for US Senate in 2004 after then Senator Zell Miller opted not to run again, which Isakson won by a wide margin and would go on to be reelected twice – the only Republican Senator from Georgia to win 3 US Senate races. Joan talks about his time in the Senate Chairing the Veterans Affairs and Ethics Committees, his commitment to constituent services, and his reputation for reaching across the aisle to get bills passed. After he retired from the US Senate at the end of 2019, he led the formation of The Isakson Initiative, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness and funding for research related to neurocognitive diseases including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and related dementia. It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world under Georgia’s Gold Dome right now--even more than usual. It’s that crossover time of year, when bills hit a critical deadline. One of them, the proposed state takeover of Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, made it through the Senate ahead of the deadline. And it happened just as a new indictment was handed down in the investigation of corruption at Atlanta's City Hall. And it’s voting time, too, at least in Gwinnett County, even though it’s not November. But the stakes are just as big, with transit on the line, so to speak. And some bills favored by GOP conservatives ran into big hurdles under the Gold Dome. It's all on the menu for another Political Breakfast. Our regulars, Tharon Johnson and Brian Robinson, are both involved in the Gwinnett County transit campaign, so they are sitting out this time. Joining WABE political contributor Denis O'Hayer: Democrat Cathy Woolard, a former Atlanta City Council president, and most recently, a candidate for Mayor. Also along for this ride: Lynn Westmoreland, a former Georgia Republican Congressman, and before that, the GOP leader in the Georgia State House.
To the postmodern and relativistic thinker, the definition of what it means to be human could vary dramatically. Because the very foundation for how we treat and interact with other people first demands that we understand what a person actually is, we need to establish and maintain that foundation with our kids early and often. Confusing? Well, we will sort it all out for you as we discuss who we are in Jesus Christ. Evangelist Alveda King is a former college professor and a former representative in the Georgia State House of Representatives. She currently serves as a Pastoral Associate and Director of Civil Rights for the Unborn. She is also a voice for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, sharing her testimony of two abortions, God's forgiveness, and healing. The daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King and his wife Naomi Barber King, Alveda grew up in the civil rights movement led by her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Her family home in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed, as was her father's church office in Louisville, Kentucky. Alveda was jailed during the open housing movement. She sees the pro-life movement as a continuation of the civil rights struggle. The Founder of Alveda King Ministries, Alveda has served on several boards, including Heartbeat International, Georgia Right to Life, MLK Center, Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, and Abortion Recovery International (ARIN). She is also a member of the National Black Pro-life Coalition (NBPC) and is a Senior Fellow with the Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society. Alveda King is a bestselling author; among her books are King Rules: Ten Truths for You, Your Family, and Our Nation to Prosper, How Can the Dream Survive if We Murder the Children?, and I Don't Want Your Man, I Want My Own. She is also a regular columnist for the “Newsmax Insiders” section on Newsmax.com and a Fox News contributor. How Building Biblical Foundations Provides Moral Points of Reference The redefinition of terms is not only often the root of much of the conflict and confusion we see in America today, but it is also largely responsible for the communication break-down in the parent/child relationship. It is hard to agree on anything when common terms are commonly misunderstood, misrepresented, and misapplied to virtually everything these days—particularly when it comes to common terms like God, man, love, hate, truth, good, evil, marriage, family, faith, grace, peace, freedom, or even what it means to be human. I could go on and on with good and godly terms that are too often defined with the devil's dictionary. Think about this: The distortion of what it actually means to be “human”—for example—was one way that Americans actually justified and legalized slavery in the 19th century! Isn't this how we have justified and legalized abortion in the 20th century and even up to this very day? In the 19th century our Supreme Court defined African Americans as only three-fifths of a human. Today, unborn babies are called fetuses. Murder is euthanasia. Disagreement is on par with hate, bigotry, or racism. Our kids have to be made aware of this postmodern insanity or we are going to continue to implode our families and implode our nation. So where should our point of reference be for all moral truth? Where do we go for child-rearing principles and to find out what it actually means to be human? Well, hopefully that is what today's guest is going to help us get sorted out. Evangelist Alveda King and I discuss faith, biblical foundations, and pro-life perspectives as we cover the following topics: Who is Alveda King? Who shaped Martin Luther King Jr.'s worldview? Does there really need to be an absolute point of reference? What shapes Alveda King's perspective on abortion? What is Alveda's experience with modeling her faith to her family? Join us for a conversation with Dr. Alveda King, Author of King Rules and Director of African American Outreach with Priests for Life. The daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King and his wife Naomi Barber King, Alveda grew up in the civil rights movement led by her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She is also a voice for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, sharing her testimony of two abortions, God’s forgiveness, and healing. Her family home in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed, as was her father’s church office in Louisville, Kentucky. Alveda was jailed during the open housing movement. She sees the prolife movement as a continuation of the civil rights struggle. Dr. King is a former college professor and served in the Georgia State House of Representatives. She is a recipient of the Life Prize Award (2011), the Cardinal John O’Connor Pro-Life Hall of Fame Award (2011) from the Legatus organization and the Civil Rights Award from Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) (2011). She is a bestselling author; among her books are King Rules: Ten Truths for You, Your Family, and Our Nation to Prosper, How Can the Dream Survive if we Murder the Children? and I Don’t Want Your Man, I Want My Own.
