In this week's episode of Take to the Sky: The Air Disaster Podcast, we talk about the incredible story of Air Canada Flight 143, a flight crew who found themselves to be uniquely qualified for the most unexpected of issues, and the shocking reasons the plane-- now known as the Gimli Glider-- came to be powerless in the sky. No one on board knew that their flight was about to become one of the most infamous flights in aviation history. Beneath the skin of the plane, something sinister was brewing: empty fuel tanks. Due to a tragic series of mistakes, less than half the necessary fuel was put into the aircraft, which carried 69 people on board. As the plane neared fuel exhaustion, the pilots realize too late that they've made a grave miscalculation. What happens when you run out of fuel at 40,000 feet? How can a church be like a passenger plane that runs out of fuel 8 miles in the air? For a plane to get off the ground, you need high air pressure to be great enough to give lift. For a plane to stay in the air, you need engines to keep the plane going at a proper speed. To keep going at a proper speed, you need fuel. This week we're headed to Canada to discuss the story of Air Canada Flight 143, which ran out of fuel 40,000 feet above rural Manitoba in July of 1983. What should have been a crash was narrowly averted by a pair of skilled pilots, a handful of algebra, and a landing site on a decomissioned airstrip in Gimli - which happened to be packed with Canadian car enthusiasts watching a racecar rally. Along the way, we'll talk about the Canadian air-traffic industry's imperial-metric changeover, how to upcycle an old Air Force base, and - most importantly - how to turn a Boeing 767 into the world's heaviest and least agile glider. On July 23, 1983 a Canada Air 767 with 61 passengers and eight crew aboard ran out of fuel while flying over a remote area of Ontario, Canada at 41,000ft. The pilot and co-pilot were able to take the airplane and glide to to a harrowing but safe landing on a drag strip in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. The outcome was less a miracle and more an amazing example of expert pilot work from Captain Robert Pearson and co-pilot Maurice Quintal. But how did this happen? How did a modern airliner run out of gas halfway through a flight? How did this impossible scenario come to pass? A series of coincidental mistakes culminating with some bad math set the wheels in motion to produce the scenario that was and will forever be known as The Gimli Glider. This is the story about how some small breaks in communication, a mis-calculated math problem, and dauntless skill all combined to create one of the most fascinating stories in the history of modern aviation.  Think running out of gas in your car is annoying? Try it miles in the sky while trying to get hundreds of thousands of pounds safely to the ground!

Air Canada Flight 143 was a Canadian scheduled domestic passenger flight between Montreal and Edmonton that ran out of fuel on July 23, 1983, at an altitude of 41,000 feet (12,000 m), midway through the flight. The crew was able to glide the Boeing 767 aircraft safely to an emergency landing at a former Royal Canadian Air Force base in Gimli, Manitoba, that had been turned into a motor racing track. This unusual aviation incident earned the aircraft the nickname "Gimli Glider". The Cornfield Meet: Air Disasters is brought to you by Michele Sargent (occasionally guest starring Andy Sargent).
