Jesus says that we have to be like children to be successful in the Kingdom of God, but Paul says we should put away childish things. [EP 25-045] I'm amazed at the change in politics today. I've discussed how Trump keeps the Left jumping, much like Obama did during his tenure. Obama remade America in a grotesque image based on his history. And as one can imagine, Democrats now run from that history. While Democrats won't publicly decry Obama, privately they have a very different opinion than what the media presents. The same is true for Trump. Democrats want all the things Trump versions 1 and2 bring, but they won't admit it. Ask the average Trump-hating Leftists why they don't like Trump and you will get nothing but talking points. Ask them if they want action, i.e. results from government and you get a resounding, “Yes!” People want to feel safe in the world, be that from the possibility of war to walking the streets in their neighborhoods. Trump gives them that with his foreign policy and his border policy. Overwhelmingly Americans are happy with Trump's crackdown of illegal immigration that begins with removing the worst criminals. It's hard to believe, but many Leftists reject Trump's rounding up of vicious criminals, preferring to stand on some idiotic principle for open borders. Democrats argue that America won't work unless we have illegals. What kind of logic is that? To believe the Left, citizens of America are pampered and we all have illegals to do our lawn work, care for our children, our pools, and then cook and clean for us. I can't speak for everybody, but I don't employ any illegals. And after Bidenflation, you can bet that many who could afford them can't any more. Planes can travel faster in some air than in others, and sometimes, you have to go higher in order to go faster. Using the response of the people of Israel in Exodus 19-20, we’re exploring what it looks like to rise and reach the top of the mountain to which God is calling us.

The mainstream media continue to push the narrative that the US and Canadian economies are strong. Unemployment is low and the service sector of the economy is doing great.  This is what is driving the soft landing hypothesis.  But what is being overlooked is the economic headwind that is about to hit the US economy  The US government is low on tax revenue this year. We have reported on the fact that the US Treasury has experienced as massive fall in tax collections this year. We know that there have not been any massive tax cuts announced for this year. So there is no way that the amount of personal income tax collected in 2023 can be down and the economy is growing at the same time. Those two numbers need to track each other very closely.  Effective September 1, in less than two weeks, US student loans become due again.  The US has 45 million people with student debt. Over the past three years, about 60% of the borrowers with student loans took advantage of a pandemic forbearance offer on student loans. That comes to 25.6 million people. The Biden administration attempted to extend this forbearance even further and this executive order was struck down by the Supreme Court. The power of the purse, that is government spending and tax collection is vested with the Congress and not the executive branch of government which is the President's office.  Effective Sept 1 the interest will start accruing again on these 25.6 million loans and the average payment of $300 per month will need to start coming out of bank accounts on October 1.  For the last quarter of the year, that amounts to approximately 23B dollars that will be pulled out of the economy. Now that might not sound like a huge sum of money within the context of the entire US economy.  But the impact is larger than just 23B. Remember that when money is spent in the economy, it tends to recirculate. This is called velocity of money, the notion that money circulates in the economy. But when a loan is repaid, the velocity associated with that transaction is zero. Those funds go to money heaven.

Dinner was out, of course, and the Bach too, I realized, feeling it in my neck, and standing there in the rain, examining my totaled car, the guilty driver soaked, in tears. The cops were nice enough, did what they had to do efficiently. The wrecker did show up, eventually, and we began to cope. And since it's now collision story time, the word I'm hearing in my head is ‘thud'.   There's ‘clunk', of course, or ‘jolt', ‘wham-bang', or ‘thwack'. ‘Thwack' has that sudden, can't-be-happening feel, as in, “I was just sitting, reading Kant, when suddenly, inside my head, I felt this ‘thwack', and everything went blank.” But no! The word that truly bongs the knell is ‘thud', essence—onomatopoetically— of impact, ‘thud', from dice, to hand-grenade, to asteroid. We need the stupid ‘d' of ‘doo-doo', ‘dodo', 'dude', or ‘dud', or ‘dead'. ‘You're-done-for-d' is what we're up against; you never know when out of nowhere, ‘thud'!   But on the other hand, there's Bach: the Bach we missed, the works for cello solo. Bach: initial ‘b', a kind of plosive bump, terminal ‘ch', a bit of friction in the throat, but in between the ‘b' and ‘ch', the ‘ah', release: sustained and open, ‘ah'. Think of the bow colliding with the string, a subtle thud, a scrape, and out floats Bach, genial Bach-analia of dark and light, a theory of the universe as music: bang, and then the sarabande, the minuet, the allemande, the gigue.     Shane Chergosky was born in Minnesota where he was raised on stuffed cabbage and heavy metal. The 19th and 20th days had that feel to them because I tore a bit from the top of the page, forcing me to write around the tear. Jeff Weniger, head of equity strategy at WisdomTree Asset Management, says that the strong dollar is dramatically changing business conditions for U.S. companies, even as they deal with recessionary conditions. The dollar has gotten so strong, Weniger says, that it's an expensive country for companies and consumers, all of whom will have to deal with the headwinds created by the dollar. Weniger says that he expects the next six months to  be characterized by significant volatility, which will give technology stocks a tough ride, which has him turning to utilities and consumer staples while waiting to see how the Federal Reserve's plans to deal with inflation play out. Also on the show, Hugh Tallents, senior partner at cg42.com discusses his recent research into "buy now, pay later" plans and says that consumer behaviors are inflation a debt bubble that could lead to real trouble for the industry as interest rates rise and the economy continues to falter in 2023; Kyle Guske, investment analyst at New Constructs, adds Ring Central to a recent list of "zombie stocks" -- companies with no earnings that are burning through cash and are headed for trouble trying to raise more under current conditions -- noting that it has the potential to be bankrupt in as little as two months, and Mark Lehmann, chief executive officer at JMP Securities discusses stocks in the Market Call.

"Stock market today was volatile and taking out new lows after the FOMC announcement. The treasury market and yields are coming back down on the back-end of the curve. The U.S. Dollar strength is a headwind for both the markets and company earnings. The metal commodity, gold, came off its 2.5 year lows, and the silver price is responding positively as well," says Dan Deming.

Following a recent sharp rise in mortgage interest rate expectations, RBC Capital Markets' Global Equity Team takes a closer look at prospects for the UK housing market and potential impacts on the General Retail, Banks and Internet sectors. While the nature of the market means RBC remains relatively sanguine on the outlook short term, RBC expects rising mortgage rates to be more of a headwind for UK consumers in 2023/24. As a result, the team sees a reduced outlook for several retailers with home-related exposure.
