Francis Hunt: Higher Rates are No Longer a Headwind for Metals

Palisade Radio

In this podcast, Francis Hunt discusses the current economic landscape, focusing on the potential collapse of debt markets and the rise of alternative assets like gold, silver, and platinum. He argues that we are witnessing the end of a 40-year bond market cycle, with long-term debt instruments experiencing significant yield increases across multiple countries, including the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Hunt emphasizes that the traditional safe-haven assets like government bonds are losing their appeal due to capital devaluation and low yields. He suggests that investors are increasingly turning to precious metals as a preservation of capital strategy. Technical analysis of gold, platinum, and silver charts indicates potential breakouts and continued upward momentum, with gold potentially reaching targets around $3,700. A key discussion point is the unraveling of the Japanese carry trade, where low-cost Japanese funding has been used to invest in higher-yielding assets globally. As Japanese long-term yields rise, this trade becomes less attractive, potentially causing significant financial disruption. Hunt believes this could trigger a broader financial restructuring. The conversation also explores the potential vulnerability of the United States as a global economic hegemon. Hunt argues that the U.S. is not immune to economic challenges and may experience a more dramatic economic downturn due to its higher starting point. He warns about the potential collapse of pension systems, driven by complex financial instruments like Leveraged Debt Instruments (LDIs) that have created unsustainable financial structures. Ultimately, Hunt predicts a shift towards alternative assets and potentially a universal basic income (UBI) system as traditional financial mechanisms break down. He advises investors to focus on physical precious metals and be cautious of complex financial products and large asset management firms. The podcast presents a sobering view of the current global economic landscape, suggesting significant structural changes are on the horizon.

The ship Jonah used in order to run from God's presence ran him straight into a storm, and no matter how hard the sailors tried to row they couldn't break free from it. When we find ourselves in a serious 'headwind' that threatens to sink our ship, it's important to remember that not every storm is because of sin! It's also important to remember that every sin does lead to stormy weather. If we've found ourselves in one of those storms, repentance is always the best course correction we can make. It's the perfect time to heed the voice of God, turning to the One who can wake us up, soften our hearts, and free us from condemnation.

This is the last five-minute magic episode from Mindful Creative Podcast. We are finishing the season with a reminder that a headwind is always guaranteed. And the reason why I use that phrase, and the reason why I wrote that chapter, and the reason why I use that phrase and wrote this subsection, is that as any fellow cyclist or runner or climber or ski or whatever. The headwind is inevitable. It always happens and it's never fun. You want to avoid it. You want to go in the opposite direction and you can't, well, you can make a choice of going with the tailwind and make it easier for yourself. But I've been thinking about it recently. Would you rather run a downhill easily and not learn or get stronger, or would you rather run into the headwind and get stronger and learn?. We call it character building when things are really hard, you really want to give up. A headwind is always guaranteed. It's always gonna be there. It's growth, it's pushing, it's learning, it's strengthening. It is overcoming adversity. This is the end of Season 2 and I want thank you for following this podcast season, for getting a copy of the book, and for listening to these episodes. It means a lot to me. It's been amazing to see how many people have resonated with these conversations and episodes. I greatly thank you for being here, and I'll see you with the next season very soon.Mindful Creative: How to understand and deal with the highs and lows of creative life, career and business Paperback and Kindle > https://amzn.to/4biTwFcFree audiobook (with Audible trial) > https://geni.us/free-audiobookSigned books https://novemberuniverse.co.ukLux Coffee Co. https://luxcoffee.co.uk/ (Use: PODCAST for 15% off)November Universe https://novemberuniverse.co.uk (Use: PODCAST for 10% off)

This week, we’re beginning the last message in the Crosswinds Series, which has been all about the things that destroy our relationships and disrupt our spiritual progress in pursuing God’s glory. In other words, we’re exploring the horizontal things that become the lid for the vertical things in our lives. Wind isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. Headwinds provide lift, and tailwinds provide speed. Crosswinds, on the other hand, aren’t helpful for anyone. Our two opening scriptures (1 Corinthians 13:11 and Matthew 18:1-4) both reference childhood, but one seems to encourage it while the other seems to reject it. Jesus says that we have to be like children to be successful in the Kingdom of God, but Paul says we should put away childish things. For this message, we’re going to talk about the crosswind of immaturity, which takes a tole on our relationships. The key is to learn to be child-like but not childish.

We’re in the middle of a three-part series on relationships called Crosswinds. If you picture a cross, there are two pieces of wood: a vertical piece and a horizontal piece. Throughout this series, we’re talking about horizontal things — how we conduct ourselves and interact with people around us — that can hinder our vertical pursuit of God’s glory. While headwinds give us lift and tailwinds give us speed, crosswinds are never helpful. Last week, we talked about the first common crosswind in our relationships: the excessive use of alcohol. We learned that it never helps and provided resources to help those dealing with this issue. This week, we’re going to talk about our next crosswind: sexual impurity. It’s mentioned often in the Bible, but many churches don’t discuss it. Together, we’ll explore how sexual impurity is killing our marriages and other relationships.

The purpose of this series is to remind us of important things we need to take care of horizontally, so we can ascend vertically without hinderance. [EP 25-045] I'm amazed at the change in politics today. I've discussed how Trump keeps the Left jumping, much like Obama did during his tenure. Obama remade America in a grotesque image based on his history. And as one can imagine, Democrats now run from that history. While Democrats won't publicly decry Obama, privately they have a very different opinion than what the media presents. The same is true for Trump. Democrats want all the things Trump versions 1 and2 bring, but they won't admit it. Ask the average Trump-hating Leftists why they don't like Trump and you will get nothing but talking points. Ask them if they want action, i.e. results from government and you get a resounding, “Yes!” People want to feel safe in the world, be that from the possibility of war to walking the streets in their neighborhoods. Trump gives them that with his foreign policy and his border policy. Overwhelmingly Americans are happy with Trump's crackdown of illegal immigration that begins with removing the worst criminals. It's hard to believe, but many Leftists reject Trump's rounding up of vicious criminals, preferring to stand on some idiotic principle for open borders. Democrats argue that America won't work unless we have illegals. What kind of logic is that? To believe the Left, citizens of America are pampered and we all have illegals to do our lawn work, care for our children, our pools, and then cook and clean for us. I can't speak for everybody, but I don't employ any illegals. And after Bidenflation, you can bet that many who could afford them can't any more. Which brings me to the Trump economy.  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

Pilots prefer to take off in a headwind because it allows them to climb better. As a matter of fact, naval aircraft carriers turn into the wind when they are getting ready to launch their planes. Headwinds don’t scare an experienced pilot, but once they get off the ground, they need to move from a headwind to a tailwind. They have to move from one air mass — or one river of air — to another. The prophetic word that God gave to our church in the spring suggests a season of acceleration, and just like planes, this requires us to rise. Planes can travel faster in some air than in others, and sometimes, you have to go higher in order to go faster. Using the response of the people of Israel in Exodus 19-20, we’re exploring what it looks like to rise and reach the top of the mountain to which God is calling us.

In this episode, Woo shares his macro framework, emphasizing the intersection of economics, politics, and geopolitics and the need to understand their impact on market outcomes. Woo also explores the potential risks and challenges facing the US economy, including political instability and polarization.  Woo, the former head of Global Interest Rates, Foreign Exchange, Emerging Markets Fixed Income Strategy, & Economics Research at Bank of America, is known for some of his bold and contrarian calls, including Trump winning the presidential race in 2016 and the 2020 US presidential election would be much closer than expected and the results contested. With the increased political polarization in the U.S., Woo sees a real pressure point once we enter the third quarter. “Once we get into July, we're four months away from the election, I think it's going to feel like shit. I think America, Americans are going to be petrified about what is going to be in store for the country in the final four months leading up to the election,” Woo said, adding that when safeguards to the system get “seriously stress tested” it will be “a huge economic headwind” to households and companies.  Elsewhere, he shares contrarian investment views and highlights the importance of facts and numbers in public discourse. The mainstream media continue to push the narrative that the US and Canadian economies are strong. Unemployment is low and the service sector of the economy is doing great.  This is what is driving the soft landing hypothesis.  But what is being overlooked is the economic headwind that is about to hit the US economy  The US government is low on tax revenue this year. We have reported on the fact that the US Treasury has experienced as massive fall in tax collections this year. We know that there have not been any massive tax cuts announced for this year. So there is no way that the amount of personal income tax collected in 2023 can be down and the economy is growing at the same time. Those two numbers need to track each other very closely.  Effective September 1, in less than two weeks, US student loans become due again.  The US has 45 million people with student debt. Over the past three years, about 60% of the borrowers with student loans took advantage of a pandemic forbearance offer on student loans. That comes to 25.6 million people. The Biden administration attempted to extend this forbearance even further and this executive order was struck down by the Supreme Court. The power of the purse, that is government spending and tax collection is vested with the Congress and not the executive branch of government which is the President's office.  Effective Sept 1 the interest will start accruing again on these 25.6 million loans and the average payment of $300 per month will need to start coming out of bank accounts on October 1.  For the last quarter of the year, that amounts to approximately 23B dollars that will be pulled out of the economy. Now that might not sound like a huge sum of money within the context of the entire US economy.  But the impact is larger than just 23B. Remember that when money is spent in the economy, it tends to recirculate. This is called velocity of money, the notion that money circulates in the economy. But when a loan is repaid, the velocity associated with that transaction is zero. Those funds go to money heaven.
