After days of torrential rain and what meteorologists termed a rain bomb, many parts of Brisbane went under as the Brisbane River and many suburban creeks flooded. It's the most severe flooding in Brisbane since 2011, but this time around what caught many locals out was just how fast the water rose. Lou lives in the suburb of Oxley which is in Brisbane's south west - it was devastated by the floods in 2011, and while I couldn't get in to speak to her in person because of the flooding, I managed to get her on the phone to chat about what Oxley was going through. There were plenty of good news stories as well, like the cows rescued from a shed roof by a group of kayakers. Bonus fact - Oxley is one of Dave McCormack aka Bandit Heeler's favourite Brissy suburbs - we know because he dropped that factoid when we got the chance to interview him last year. In this episode of the Social Lights Podcast, podcast host and Social Mediology founder Kate vanderVoort chats with Juliette Wright, Founder and Director of GIVIT.org.au (GIVIT.org.au) —an online donation and giving platform. ABOUT JULIETTE and GIVIT A former nutritionist who specialised in autoimmune diseases, cancer, and infertility—Juliette Wright has always wanted to help people. However, she realised one day that she wanted to help out in a different manner. What started out as a person’s simple quest to donate baby clothes to a charity that really needed it has snowballed into Juliette starting a national charity. Through GIVIT, charities can request for specific items that they truly need—such as a microwave or mattress—and individuals can donate items they no longer need and give it to someone who does. Juliette and her team ensure that it’s always perfectly matched, down to the item’s size, quantity, and quality. BIG IDEA 1 “It’s incredibly addictive to watch giving flow and helping it happen.” (8:47) Juliette quickly realized that charities in her area needed very specific, sometimes even unusual, things. One charity asked for work boots, so that the father of a homeless family could get a job. “The simple school shoes that your kids no longer require, the lovely pencil case that they got given as a present that they never use—we do guarantee through GIVIT that they will go directly to someone who actually needs it,” Juliette shares. They even allow the recipient to choose which donation to accept, giving them a sense of ownership. Juliette shares that these recipients tend to hold on to their items longer when they’re have a choice as to what they’re given. As such, her team sort through the donations, and have the right to refuse donations when they feel that it’s no longer in useable condition, or is essentially deemed not fit for gifting. Apart from helping out those in need, GIVIT also sees to it that they help out the local economy when possible. When the quantity needed is large, for instance, then the charity asks its donors for money instead of physical items. The charity then uses then use this money to purchase the items from the local retailers.  BIG IDEA 2 “We are never not activated now.” (20:34) Regardless of the time of year, GIVIT is working on either small or large activations. While they’re not always activated on the level of fires where all hands are on deck, they have other appeals that keep them busy. From January to April, for instance, they work on their Back to School campaign for kids that don't have essentials such as shoes, a pencil case, or a hat. After the holidays, they also get numerous requests stemming from domestic violence cases and families getting displaced who are in need of support. BIG IDEA 3 “Don’t ever just give up, even if it just takes a little longer.” (43:37)  Juliette built her website numerous times—and failed—before getting it to work the way she wanted it to. She had lost about 800-900 AUD. She felt like an absolute failure, and shares that even if nobody else knew that she had failed—she did. But she dug really deep and told herself, “I’m going to do this anyway.” No matter what other people thought, she knew that it was important to her, and that’s what mattered. It's been 11 years since GIVIT was first launched, and to date, over 1.5 million items have been donated to people in need. Juliette has been recognized has as 2015’s Australian Local Hero, and GIVIT has been promoted by celebrities such as the Duchess of Cornwall and even Barack Obama. The charity has recently been given funding from the federal government’s Department of Emergencies to enable the website to manage multiple catastrophic disasters at the same time. Juliette continues to work tirelessly to ensure that GIVIT becomes a “giving portal that can be resilient enough to manage the quantity of people who want

World Wildlife Fund Australia: This chapter of the international wildlife conservation organization is accepting donations to care for injured wildlife and, when the fires clear, to plant 10,000 native trees in critical koala habitat, including in "koala triangle," the heartland of Australia's healthiest wild koala populations. Donate at donate.wwf.org.au. Animal Rescue Craft Guild: This volunteer-run group with participants worldwide is knitting and crocheting protective pouches and blankets for animals displaced by the fires. Since September, Australia has experienced the worst bushfires in our history. The conditions have been described as “apocalyptic” and likened to “an atomic bomb” as fires continue to burn in every state and territory in the country. On New Year’s Eve tens of thousands of Australians found themselves trapped by fire with no power or mobile phone service. We speak to Mamamia’s Editor, Clare Stephens, who was one of them.  The loss of homes, business, wildlife and, at last count, 23 lives, is being mourned all over the world. In this special episode of Mamamia Out Loud, Holly Wainwright, Mia Freedman and Jessie Stephens discuss what’s happened, why such fury is being directed at our Prime Minister and perhaps most importantly, what can be done to help.  For a full list of where to donate, see the list below:  New South Wales Support your local brigade https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/support-your-local-brigade Support firefighter’s families http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/news-and-media/general-news/featured/support-for-firefighter-families Giveit NSW - you can donate money or find specific items that have been requested for donation https://givit.worldsecuresystems.com/items-needed?campaign=50 Mogo Zoo Fire Recovery https://au.gofundme.com/f/mogo-zoo-fire-recovery  Port Macquarie Koala Hospital https://au.gofundme.com/f/help-thirsty-koalas-devastated-by-recent-fires Victoria Bushfire Appeal for the ongoing support of bushfire survivors https://www.vic.gov.au/bushfireappeal Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund https://www.gerf.org.au/donate/  GoFundMe pages have been set up for the Victorian communities of Cudgewa https://bit.ly/2Qr1F3b and Mallacootahttps://www.gofundme.com/f/mallacoota-fires-support-fund Wildlife Victoria https://www.facebook.com/donate/466018984334454/2938373519529456/ South Australia  CFS foundation https://cfsfoundation.org.au/donate Gofundme for Kangaroo Island wildlife recovery and rehabilitation efforts https://bit.ly/37KGQFx  Kangaroo Island Mayoral Relief and Recovery Bushfire Fund  https://bit.ly/2T3dhLy  Adelaide Koala Rescue LTD http://www.akr.org.au/donate  Queensland RFBAQ Donations https://rfbaq.org/donate-to-a-specific-brigade Queensland-government-backed Givit is coordinating donations of items across Australia. https://givit.worldsecuresystems.com/items-needed?campaign=4 General Help Donate blood with the Australian Red Cross https://www.donateblood.com.au/  Australian Lions Foundation https://www.givenow.com.au/australianlionsfoundation  RSPCA https://www.rspcansw.org.au/  Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery https://www.redcross.org.au/campaigns/disaster-relief-and-recovery-donate  WIRES for animal support and care https://www.wires.org.au/donate/emergency-fund

Producent: Anneli Dufva

In this episode, Catherine chats to Juliette Wright, a long-term Mind Matters client and the founder and director of GIVIT, a not-for-profit with the aim of helping alleviate the effects of poverty across Australia. She shares her secrets to success and the challenges she’s had to overcome in order to get there. An experienced director and CEO, Juliette started the free online donation platform in 2009 with the hope of connecting those who have with those who need. The website has grown from just 15 charities onboard to more than 2,600 charities, government agencies and schools in just under 10 years. The website has seen more than 1.2 million items donated to people in need. GIVIT also provides an award-winning Disaster Recovery Service to help manage donation flow after disasters like the Brisbane and Bundaberg Floods, Tropical Cyclones Marcia, Ita and Debbie, and the Gladstone and Tasmanian fires. GIVIT is the only non-profit funded by the NSW Government’s Department of Primary Industry for drought recovery in New South Wales, because GIVIT buys locally in disaster and drought recovery, ensuring the right people, get the right things in the right way. Juliette has won numerous awards for disaster recovery, business and innovation, and was awarded Australia’s Local Hero in 2015. More recently, she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal. Episode highlights: Why Juliette started the company in 2009 - realised charities don’t need clothes donated Juliette’s realisation that simple things can pull people out of poverty Her first challenge - articulating what she was trying to achieve A bit of background on how Juliette went from nutritionist to CEO Why the procurement website failed twice and how Juliette got past it What she would do differently - get a legal company because regulations change a lot Choosing to ignore everything and deciding never to give up The driving force - wanting to help people by giving the impoverished what they actually need Hitting the 10 year anniversary of GIVIT and 1.25 million donations (donations have since reached 3,3000,000 million) Black Saturday fires - killed 173 people in Victoria and gave Juliette the idea for GIVIT disaster recovery Rolling out disaster recovery throughout Australia and the problems along the way Juliette’s biggest issues - she doesn’t fit the charity mould Assessing her core values - love, trust and connection Prioritising her values and realising what was right and not-so-right for her How Juliette manages her emotional state Remaining true to her values and expecting others to respect them Being honest and transparent so she can acknowledge her mistakes Ensuring her core values complement her husband’s Hitting a milestone with the Townsville floods - delivered over 220,000 donations in three months How Mind Matters helped Juliette - every problem is an opportunity Being in denial as a manager and not listening to the problem Embracing the richness of life Focusing on what her family needs and juggling a business The importance of planning downtimes - letting go of GIVIT when on holiday Useful Links Juliette Wright on LinkedIn GIVIT Website Useful Links: Mind Matters Website Catherine Connolly on LinkedIn Rex Urwin on LinkedIn Mind Matters Twitter  Mind Matters Facebook info@mindmatters.me See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
