Ferry Wijnhoven's beer life began in typical Dutch fashion, with a Heineken. He could even see the brewery on his daily commutes. But he gradually discovered the new variety of beer in the Netherlands, where there are now almost 1,000 breweries. He also expressed his enthusiasm on social media, until his relatives cut him off as a friend because all they could see on their timeline was beer. That was the reason why Ferry eventually started his own Facebook group, which grew from 20 members to almost 17,000 in no time and is now the largest beer community in the country. In BierTalk, we talk about this fascinating story and the people behind it...

Neil Witte from Cicerone Certification Program joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras today on the Brew Ha Ha podcast. He trains people to become what is commonly called a Beer Sommelier. Herlinda holds the first degree certificate. Neil Witte started as a home brewer and got his first brewery job in 1997 in Kansas City, then for another larger brewer in the same city. He worked for three years as a brewer then as a quality control manager visiting bars and restaurants making sure the beer was top quality. He took beer certification programs and did a lot of private study. Now he works for the Cicerone Certification Program as the chief trainer. Etymology, Definitions and Pronunciation of Cicerone Cicerone means "guide" in Italian. (1) It commonly refers to an Italian tour guide. "Cicerone" is Italian for the Latin name Cicero. Marcus Tullius Cicero was a great scholar, lawyer and writer of the first century BCE. His surname is still synonymous with eloquence in the Italian language. In Italian, the term Cicerone is first noted in the mid-1500s to mean a local guide capable of narrating a tour, for a fee, through the numerous monuments, museums and historic scenery of Italy. The word "cicerone" has been well established in the English language since the early 1700s, with the same meaning it has in Italian. In both languages, ever since it first appeared, it is just as easily invoked ironically or derisively, in reference to the overly florid or affected language of the worst of them. By extension, in Italian and also in English, cicerone is a common word for an expert guide to anything. As for its pronunciation, it depends on the language. In Italian it is "chee-chair-ÓH-neh" (using English phonetic lettering to render Italian sounds) with the accent on the third of four syllables. English has adopted the word with its own sound, so in British or American pronunciation, people say "SIS-er-own" in three syllables. In any flavor of English either one is correct. Online Offerings Herlinda describes how they are doing classes online in order to keep busy during confinement. They have several free introductory classes and tastings. This is a great way for people who like beer or work with beer to add to their knowledge. Their highest degree, the Master cicerone, is a two-day exam, with written and oral questions as well as tastings. He majored in Philosophy and found that the Master exam was the hardest he ever had. They also have a YouTube channel. (1) Here is the definition of "Cicerone" in the online Treccani dictionary of the Italian language. http://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/cicerone/ (This episode was originally recorded on 5-14-20 and placed in the podcast queue for the 4-23-20 edition due to lack of new shows owing to Coronavirus inconveniences. Every April, people from across North America and around the world flock to America’s largest craft brewing industry gathering: the Craft Brewers Conference. Sharing education, knowledge and ideas, the trade show is led by the top minds in the world of beer and business. For many brewers and beer professionals, this is an annual pilgrimage to not only consume information but to sample great beers. It’s evident when you look at the wealth of resources for brewers to come out of the States how passionate Americans are over craft beer. The CBC is just one example, but you don't have to look far to see evidence elsewhere. One such forum aimed at promoting and protecting American craft brewers is none other than the CBC's hosts, the Brewers Association. The Brewers Association is a not-for-profit trade association comprised of over 5,400 brewers members, 46,000 American Homebrewers Association members, and allied trade, beer wholesalers, retailers and other associate members. However, the Brewers Association isn’t just a resource for America alone. Brewers and beer professionals from other countries and continents, including the UK & Europe, are able to join and enjoy member benefits. These include articles, access to seminars online, education publications, and their magazine, The New Brewer. How America will fare during the current climate is anyone’s guess, especially without getting too political. However, the land of the home and brave and its beer professionals will have to band together more than ever to see its 8000+ breweries come through the other side. The landscape of US craft beer has been changing of late anyway. The keynote talk at the CBC Online from Bart Watson entitled The State of the Craft Brewing Industry, highlights many of the changes. However, it will no doubt will look very different in the months and years that lay ahead as it picks up the pieces of their broken economy. So, in some ways, it’s hard to publish today’s episode - recorded at BrewLDN in February this year - and discuss with Lotte Peplow what makes American craft beer and their brewers great and the reverence for many beer drinkers across the world. Lotte Peplow, is the Brewers Association American Craft Beer Ambassador for Europe. She’s a certified Cicerone®, Beer Sommelier, beer judge, beer writer, homebrewer, beer & food pairer! As you can tell, she’s really into beer…! It was a privilege to sit across a table with her backstage at BrewLDN and share some fresh beers to come from the States, to talk about American craft beer, why independence is so important, equality in the industry, and a wide range of other topics that - at the time of recording - seemed like the most important thing. Hard to believe now as our focus is redefined on merely surviving with our health, our business, and our industry intact. Any events that Lotte and I discuss on the show have been cancelled up until September. After that, who knows what might happen… both with the immediate events as hosted by the Brewers Association and the future of American craft beer.

My name is Eoghan Walsh from Brussels Beer City, and you’re listening to episode 2 of Cabin Fever - less a podcast than a group therapy session for writers, brewers, and friends who like to enjoy a beer together but, well, can’t.There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and under normal circumstances we’d get together in the pub and thrash it out over a beer or two. But we can’t - because most of us now live in countries where it’s impossible to go outside, never mind nip around the corner for a drink. So, we thought we’d do it remotely, and on each episode of Cabin Fever I’ll be joined by friends from around the world to share a beer, talk through and process what they’re dealing with, and sometimes just have a bit of a moan.On tonight’s show, I was joined tonight for this inaugural episode by:Katie Mather (@shinybiscuit), writer at Pellicle, Ferment Magazine, oenophile, bibliophile, and author of the essential weekly newsletter The GulpPadraig Fox (@foxatronic82), qualified Beer Sommelier. Today’s guest is Lotte Peplow, UK representative for the United States Brewers Association, the trade body for small and independent craft brewers in the States. After graduating from uni, Lotte got her start in PR, working at several different agencies and representing various breweries and beer brands over the years, before deciding to set up her own PR business, Peplow PR. Back in 2006, one of Lotte’s early beer clients passed her contact details on to the Brewers Association as they were looking for some help to start planning events in the UK. Lotte got involved, and reminisces fondly about the incredible beer and food pairing dinner she helped to arrange at the White Horse in Parsons’ Green all those years ago. Since then, her role with the BA has only grown, and she now represents the BA on a full-time basis. Lotte writes, speaks, plans events, liaises with importers, represents the BA at meetings across the UK and Europe, and more. She’s incredibly grateful for the opportunities the role has given her, from trips to the States for the Great American Beer Festival and Craft Brewers Conference, to a recent visit to The Hague. We talk about what her day-to-day role looks like, what her most memorable experiences in the role have been, and what learnings from the US beer scene she’d like to see here in the UK. Lotte is also a beer judge, Beer Sommelier, and recently qualified Certified Cicerone®. She tells me why she decided to pursue her certifications and about the credibility they’ve given her. We also talk about what she gets up to outside of beer and what she enjoys most about being a part of the beer industry. Here she is…

Jane tells us what she was doing before she started the School of Booze and how a Venn diagram helped her to discover her perfect career path after she left behind her previous role as a documentary film producer. Jane’s regarded as a bit of a legend here in the UK beer industry – and our conversation gives you a pretty good idea why. You’ll hear from Jane on what it took to set a Guinness World Record, how she’s championed beer as Britain’s national beverage as the founder of Beer Day Britain, and how she’s been recognized for her many contributions to the British beer industry. We discuss some of Jane’s many achievements during our conversation, but I’m also going to mention a few upfront, mainly so you know just how accomplished Jane truly is: She’s a Beer Sommelier and the UK’s first Pommelier, a sommelier specialising in cider Imbibe Magazine named her Drinks Educator of the Year in 2016 She was acknowledged for her Outstanding Individual Achievement in Beer from the Beer & Cider Marketing Awards in 2017, and Just last year, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group.  Pretty impressive, huh? When she’s not in the brewhouse, you can catch Jaega on the telly, as she’s a presenter on Channel 5’s The Wine Show. She’s also been widely recognized for her work as an equality campaigner for the industry, which has seen her so eloquently address the issue of sexism in the beer industry at conferences and festivals up and down the country. She’s a recently qualified Beer Sommelier and beer judge, too. As if all of this doesn’t sound impressive enough, Jaega was recently short-listed for Brewer of the Year by the British Guild of Beer Writers for their Annual Awards and was included in the Evening Standard’s Progress 1,000 – a list of London’s most influential people in 2018. Jaega and I talk about how her background in engineering led her to her current role as head brewer and how her passion for home brewing still fuels her creativity in the brewhouse today. Today’s guest sit at the intersection of so many aspects of Irish craft beer. He’s an importer of American brands like Lagunitas. He’s a distributor of Ireland’s domestic craft brands like Galway Bay. He’s also the country’s first, and perhaps only official Beer Sommelier. So his perspective accounts for the curation, sales, distribution, and education of craft beer in a small country that’s recently flipped a switch in terms of its interests, with many people now drinking small craft, trendy beers like New England IPA alongside traditional beers like Guinness and Murphys. And in a market with incredibly entrenched brands as Ireland has, that sudden new interest has a major uphill battle to fight to gain awareness and shelf and tap handle space in the country’s on and off-license establishments, better known in the US as on and off premises - namely bars, restaurants, and liquor store and bottles shops. As of yet, there really isn’t a taproom model to speak of, with very few exceptions. So to get a crash course on the many factors influencing Irish craft beer right now, for better and worse, I sat down with Phil Tavey of Grand Cru beers. We posted up at a bar called Sine é in Dublin who’s tap lists were a perfect representation of the state of things, running the gamut from Guinness to Galway Bay and a host of other small brewery offerings. This is Phil Tavey of Grand Cru Beers, listen in.
