Ignition's Top 50 Women in Accounting Awards has gone from strength to strength and now has global recognition, says its originator Guy Pearson, the CEO and co-founder of the company. He established the awards six years ago to acknowledge the many women who had been instrumental in his early career but who “undersold themselves”. “We can move the needle in terms of helping women put their hand up, be recognised and realise they can achieve perhaps more than they set out to,” said Mr Pearson on this week's Accountants Daily podcast. Among the first 50 winners was Rebecca Mihalic, now head of accounting at Ignition and joint guest on the podcast, who said the momentum behind the awards had grown. “I didn't even see the original announcement of the first lot of awards … but now people wait for it. People want to nominate their colleagues, they can see this is making a great impact for women out there who are doing wonderful things but are flying under the radar.” This year's winners included women from Australia, Canada, Cayman Island, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, the UK and the US.

Grow old. Get fast. Don't die. In Phil's words, the Midlife Cyclist's author, these three things encapsulates exactly what the book is about. We are living as the first generation of human beings who have exercised heavily after the age of 40. The book looks into the effect of exercise on our heart, hormones and musculoskeletal system. We evolve some ideas of how to stay healthy and injury free after the age of 40. This book contains some great do's and don'ts for the cyclist both those starting out after being exercise silent and plenty for the hard core lifetime cyclist. We are joined by the books biggest fan, Guy Pearson of Pearson cycles fame. He is currently injured and having had the longest time off the bike he can ever remember, reading this book has helped him put many things into perspective. For those that don't know me, Craig McLean, I'm not only a chiropractor but a nearly 50 year old amateur racing cyclist who's been riding with team 'Nuun Sigma Sports' for nearly a decade. Another midlife cyclist who still regularly competes with the upcoming future GB stars of cycling, both on the velodrome and road. I hope you enjoy the chat recorded in Cyclefit HQ Covent Garden. You can buy the book directly here https://shop.cyclefit.co.uk/collections/the-midlife-cyclist/products/the-midlife-cyclist
This episode features Rory with special guest Guy Pearson, the founder, and CEO of Practice Ignition, a technology company focusing on assisting accounting and bookkeeping firms by offering online proposals, automated billing, and other useful managerial tools. Practice Ignition works with over 5000 firms globally, with offices in Australia, New Zealand, UK, the US, and Canada. He touches on the differences in technology and how the US is few years behind their Australian and New Zealand counterparts, from real-time bank data feeds to their online filing system with AGI, which they've had since the '90s. Guy talks about how technology enables firms to segment information to better understand their client base. Though robots are far from having qualitative conversations and identifying exactly what clients need, automated platforms such as Practice Ignition have allowed accounting firms to boost revenue and client satisfaction because of their bundled services. In this episode, Guy also lays out the foundation of what he looks for when deciding whether or not to invest in a company as an angel investor, emphasizing the importance of finding founders who have felt the pain of what they're trying to solve. What makes an Uber driver more appealing to people than their accountant? Find out in Guy and Rory's insightful discussion this episode. You can't miss it!

Guy Pearson, founder of Practice Ignition, turned down an offer of partnership in an accounting firm at age 24 to travel around the world for a year. After running out of money, Guy returned to Australia and started an accounting firm out of his house. He set out to automate the firm right out of the gate and built a business that could scale up on its own. That meant Guy could very quickly go off and start a software company called Practice Ignition while running his firm on the side.

Today, on the Early-Stage Founder Show, I'm talking with Guy Pearson, the Founder and CEO of Practice Ignition, a SaaS startup making smarter proposal software to help service businesses win more clients, do less admin, boost cash flow, and scale their business. Guy shares how he and his team have built their business on the back of trade shows and other live events. He walks us through the exact process they follow before, during, and after events to ensure that they get a measurable ROI, warns us of the common pitfalls, and shares how they plan to scale. The first half is super tactical, which has been the focus of this podcast, but we wrap up by diving more into how Guy's role as founder evolved as his company grew and the important changes he had to make to keep up. I'm hoping this provides a valuable angle for listeners, but if I'm off base and you just want tactics and nothing else, let me know.
Guy Pearson likes to work. A lot. He started his own firm, Interactive Accounting, one of the first cloud accounting firms in Australia, and a few years later, he started Practice Ignition. He spends so much time with both that he refers to one as his wife and the other, his mistress. When he was younger, he liked to play rugby, but because he’s had to start both companies from the ground up, he hasn’t had much time for hobbies or passions – something that he now realizes needs to change. So he’s being more intentional with making time for surfing, playing basketball, and going to concerts with friends. In this episode, Guy and I talk about how important culture is to a firm or company. He says, "You can train everything else, but you can’t train someone to be a good fit for your culture." Therefore, during the interview process, he’s sure to ask questions that lead to candidates letting their personality out by sharing their hobbies or passions. He thinks coworker relationships are so important, he flies the entire global team to Sydney each April for their internal conference.
Listen in to this week's episode as Katarina Taurian gets past Practice Ignition chief executive Guy Pearson's incredibly laid back exterior to discuss the fast-paced, aggressive, and optimistic life he leads to fuel his ever-growing start-up. Guy talks about how moves in his early career as an accountant taught him the joys and frustrations small businesses face every day, and how he funnelled that into a vision that is taking him across Australia and into the European and North American markets. With a few cheeky stabs at his "stunt double" Trent McLaren thrown into the mix, Guy also talked through how he pushes through industry resistance, backlash and mudslinging to keep his eyes on the prize. www.accountantsdaily.com.au

A PhD student in cell biology at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, Guy Pearson draws a link between the pursuit of Fancy Day in Thomas Hardy’s Under the Greenwood Tree and the pursuit of scientific discovery. Here he talks about this favourite book as part of ‘Novel Thoughts’, a series exploring the literary reading habits of eight Cambridge scientists. From illustrated children’s books to Thomas Hardy, from Star Wars to Middlemarch, we find out what fiction has meant to each of the scientists and peek inside the covers of the books that have played a major role in their lives. ‘Novel Thoughts’ was inspired by research at St Andrew’s University by Dr Sarah Dillon (now a lecturer in the Faculty of English at Cambridge) who interviewed 20 scientists for the ‘What Scientists Read’ project. She found that reading fiction can help scientists to see the bigger picture and be reminded of the complex richness of human experience. Novels can show the real stories behind the science, or trigger a desire in a young reader to change lives through scientific discovery. They can open up new worlds, or encourage a different approach to familiar tasks.
