Intro: On this episode of Future of Tech, we speak to Chris Byers, CEO of Formstack. In 2010, Chris stepped in to lead Formstack as CEO for six months. Twelve years later, Chris has not only remained CEO, but the company has grown to 220 employees around the world and recently started fundraising at a billion dollar valuation. In this conversation, Chris discusses Formstack's focus on intuitive, easy-to-use, no-code solutions. Plus we dive into Chris's experiences and lessons learned as a CEO, as well as his advice for new CEOs. Enjoy this conversation. Main Takeaways: Evolution of Formstack: Chris dives into the evolution of Formstack and its journey as a startup, getting detailed about the work that the company does and its vision for the future. The Value of Fast Simplicity: Chris discusses Formstack's intent to provide a no-code solution that is easy to learn. The company's goal is for any individual contributor in any department to be able to figure out whether they can solve their problem on Formstack within 30 seconds. Chris's Thoughts on Company Culture: Chris discusses company culture: how it has seasons, how it changes with remote work and what he thinks about when building culture at Formstack. Chris's Advice for New CEOs: Chris shares his tips for new CEOs, as well as his experience stepping into the CEO role at a startup and a mistake he feels that he's made throughout his leadership.   Key Quotes: (19:41) “...culture still works in phases and seasons. I think the culture, even that I built from say seven people to let's call it 50, actually had to change. There was a moment in time and I've seen this happen a couple different times, moments in time where we're no longer getting the results that we once were getting. And that ultimately goes back to culture. Are we hiring the right people and promoting the right people?”   (23:09) “I think our ability to succeed over time will always be because we make decisions that don't look like the next big software business. We make our own unique decisions that are innovative, that are different and maybe even cause people in those early days to be like, ‘wait, what are you doing? This doesn't make any sense to me.'”   (44:16) “...as we are in a remote environment, it's a different skillset to kind of build comradery across video, which is where so much of life now takes place. And so you're starting to have to find people who can engage that way.”   (45:38) “...one of the mistakes that I probably continue to make over and over and over again is I move too slow when something is not going well. I think as leaders, we often can quickly identify that a project isn't going well, a team member isn't working out and we are compassionate and we're empathetic. And so it makes us too patient, I think at times, and we put too much stock into the person that we're dealing with when we forget if a person is kind of failing their team or failing the organization, it's not just this one to one relationship that's kind of challenged, they're causing this challenge to like grow and grow and grow across the organization.”   (47:43) “If you're in peace time, I think the team is always the most important. Sometimes you're in something more like war time, where things are chaotic and nothing is as usual, the economy is in a weird place. And sometimes if somebody's being successful, I think you let 'em run. But in the long term, I'd say it always comes back to that ability to work with the team. The ability to kind of work together is the most important thing.”

Why Businesses Should Invest in EX (Employee Experience) as Much as CX Shep Hyken interviews Liza Smyth, senior vice president of customer experience at Formstack, a company that helps organizations create workflows that enhance productivity. She shares how to make your internal and external customers feel seen and heard throughout their entire journey with your brand. Top Takeaways:   ·      A defining moment for the employee or the customer is an event that truly matters to them. Even if they started with a bad experience, at the point you turn it around (the defining moment) is what shapes their perception of you.   ·      Every employee in your organization impacts a customer's overall experience. Employees need to understand how they fit into the customer experience, even if they don't directly interact with them.   ·      When you hire brilliant people but ask them to do menial tasks, they will feel like they are not bringing their best selves to work. They become process-driven instead of utilizing their talents effectively.   ·      When an employee interacts with a customer, the employee doesn't represent themselves or their department. They represent your entire organization. You have to decide what your company's voice is and what you want your customers to experience when they engage with you. This experience needs to be consistent across the board.   ·      Employees are your biggest assets at the company. Create an environment where there is a sense of belonging, their perspective is valued, and they can be their authentic selves.   ·      Determine your company's "true north metric" (your mission, vision, mantra, etc.) and be sure that every employee understands how they influence it. Allow employees to feel like the job they do matters and that they impact the customers, their colleagues, and the organization.   ·      Formstack's State of Digital Maturity report identified that 51% of surveyed workers report spending at least two hours per day on repetitive tasks, and 72% of employees felt that inefficient processes impacted their job.   ·      Plus, Shep and Liza share how to create an environment of belongingness with employees and colleagues who are outliers of the group. Quote:  "A great employee experience delivers a great customer experience."   About:   Liza Smyth is the senior vice president of customer experience at Formstack. She leads customer care for the company's more than 25,000 customers. Before joining Formstack, Smyth worked for top tech companies, including Apple and LinkedIn. Jeremy Clarke created, grew, and sold his software company in a most unusual and successful way: He grew WebMerge to $4M revenue by just himself in 6 years before hiring his first and only employee, a strategic sales rep. It's an incredible "bootstrapped unicorn" success story that ultimately was worth $100M when he sold WebMerge in 2019. WebMerge was an online service that automates document creation to automatically fill in any documents with merged data from any source. WebMerge automatically generates PDF and Microsoft Word documents. Think of it as "mail merge for the web." Jeremy's first employer, Formstack, ultimately acquired WebMerge to bring Jeremy back to the Formstack team and renamed the product to Formstack Documents. In this episode, Jeremy explains: How he came up with the idea and pitched it to his employer before building it on his own How he grew revenues to $1M ARR before he quit his day job as a full-time software programmer What it was like to grow a $5M+ ARR SaaS business without  any other employees or Slack groups or constant meetings How many years in a row he raised prices before he found the right price How he grew awareness and conversion efficiently by integrating with other apps and appearing in their add-on marketplaces What it was like to sell his company to a private equity (PE) buyer in two phases Check out all our episodes and articles at https://practicalfounders.com.

The President and CEO of Pyze knows a thing or two about the power, pitfalls, and impact automation can have. Learn from his experiences and don't make this common automation mistake. Colleges tend to compete rather than collaborate. That's why a new five-college cooperative in New Mexico is so unusual. This week's episode explores the Collaborative for Higher Education Shared Services, or CHESS. It's made up, so far, of five independent community colleges in New Mexico that have teamed up because they think they're stronger together than apart. They've started by agreeing to create a common enterprise resource planning structure to share resources and information in areas such as accounting, student records, human resources and payroll, but the vision ultimately includes many of the features you might see in a formal college system, including smoother student mobility and more efficient and cost-effective campus operations. In the conversation, the presidents of two of the colleges, Becky Rowley of Santa Fe Community College and Tracy Hartzler of Central New Mexico Community College, discuss the combination of trust, subjugation of institutional ego, and internal culture change required to bring about a massive cross-institutional collaboration like this. They acknowledge the help they've gotten from the external partners guiding their work, CampusWorks and Workday. Hosted by Inside Higher Ed Co-founder and Editor Doug Lederman. The era of flexible work in higher education has begun. The pandemic drastically altered our collective relationship with work in the moment, but how will faculty, staff and administrative jobs look differently going forward? In this week's episode, administrators at two institutions that are addressing these questions head-on discuss their approaches. Natalie McKnight is dean of the College of General Studies at Boston University and co-chair of its Committee on the Future of Staff Work, whose recommendations underpinned the university's new policy allowing many employees to work up to two days a week from home. And Bryan Garey, vice president for human resources at Virginia Tech, discusses the university's evolving “flexible work” policy under which nearly 10 percent of the workforce has already qualified to work 100% off site. Are politicians and the public losing faith in higher education? Last week delivered unwelcome news to colleges and universities. New data from the National Student Clearinghouse showed that college enrollments tumbled again this fall, with hundreds of thousands fewer students opting to start or continue their educations than even during the heart of the pandemic last fall. And a scaled-back version of President Biden's Build Back Better Act contained about $40 billion in new funds for colleges and their students -- barely a third of the previous iteration and missing key initiatives such as much-touted tuition-free community college. This week's episode features three thoughtful observers of the higher ed landscape on what these developments mean and why they matter. Tamara Hiler is director of education at Third Way, a center-left think tank in Washington. Robert Kelchen is professor and chair of education at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. And Teresa Valerio Parrot is a principal at TVP Communications. Hosted by Inside Higher Ed Co-founder and Editor Doug Lederman. This episode is sponsored by Formstack.

“Time is growing short.” That's how Bloomfield College's president, Marcheta P. Evans, described the struggling private college's situation this week in an atypical plea for help. Bloomfield, whose students are overwhelmingly black, Hispanic and from low-income backgrounds, acknowledged that it won't make it through the 2022-23 academic year in its current condition, and asked for help from potential philanthropists and partner institutions to keep its mission alive. In this week's episode, Marcheta Evans discusses the New Jersey college's unexpected approach to an increasingly common plight. She explains why it chose to go public about a situation many institutions hide, and it's options for surviving and even thriving. This week's other guest is Barbara Brittingham, president emerita of the New England Commission of Higher Education, who as leader of the accrediting body in the demographically challenged Northeast encountered more than her fair share of financially ailing institutions. Today I'm really excited to introduce you to my new friend - Ade Olonoh. He started his first company as a senior in college. He studied computer science and mathematics at a small school in the Indianapolis area. Prior to starting that company, he'd spent the previous four years paying his way through college as a freelance web developer. He's since started four companies so far that have exited (to varying degrees of success and failure), and a handful of other companies that he quietly shut down before any real traction. The two most prominent companies are Formstack ( a B2B SaaS company which he bootstrapped for 3 years, then raised $700k from angels, and sold a major stake to Private equity 10 yrs later) and Formspring which had insane initial growth then raised $17M from VCs and later sold for pennies on the dollar after 4 yrs. What is your role in the church? In this talk, we explore how God wants everybody to play their part in the community, especially in the church. In our culture, people overwhelmingly are on a quest for autonomy, to be free to do what they want, when they want to. While this may seem like a noble desire, it is an empty destination. Fulfillment is not found in isolation, but is found when you are an integral and important part of what God is doing in the church. God promises that you will find your purpose in life and fulfillment in life when you find your role in the body of Christ. Do you want to be a part of what God is doing in the church? We want to hear from you! http://menlo.church/serveinthechurch - the Formstack will go to Taylor K and she will pass along to each campus Connections person.
