This episode originally aired on September 12, 2022.In the entire 321-year history of Yale University, the most popular class ever is a relatively new one called “Psychology and the Good Life”, taught by Dr. Laurie Santos. Since it's debut in 2018, it has proved to be so much in demand that Yale now offers a version of the class for free online to anyone in the world.Part of the appeal is that Dr. Santos is a really great professor. She's smart, presents lessons in a compelling way. But beyond that, the class holds appeal because so many people these days are not happy at all, with college students reporting depression and anxiety in numbers that are astronomical and terrifying. This trend was happening before the pandemic and has only gotten worse since. In this interview, Dr. Santos, who also hosts the podcast The Happiness Lab, talks about what happier people have in common and how to implement practices in your own life to start doing better. Importantly, this isn't a recipe for suddenly being a character in a musical comedy, jumping and singing for joy all the time. That's unrealistic and frankly a bit gross. But students who learn from her teachings report an incremental uptick in their levels of happiness, laying the foundation for better times ahead.Helpful Links:Paul Rudd goofing around to the Partridge Family in Ant Man and The Wasp: youtube.com/watch?v=LzXywwT9fI0The Worry About Yourself Video: youtu.be/4A6Bu96ALOwThe Science of Well-Being course on Coursera: coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-beingDr. Santos at the Aspen Ideas Festival: youtube.com/watch?v=ZizdB0TgAVMListen to Dr. Laurie Santos' podcast, The Happiness Lab, wherever fine pods are cast. Expert Interview! How to Make a Foundational Commitment to Being On Your Own Team w/Life Coach & Astrologer Sarah Paasch Ever struggled with feeling like you're on your own team? Being kind to yourself? Especially in the midst of a crappy mindset, a crappy mood, or crappy motivation?? Grab your headphones — this episode was made for you! Sarah Paasch is a dear friend and Coaching colleague (with whom I've had the pleasure of doing at least two Solar Return Astrology Readings...that's your birthday!...) and she's here to give you ALL the wisdom on how to be on your own team. For REAL: With full, disciplined commitment. Without perfection. Listen in for: How she helps clients integrate their intuition and intellect using Astrology and intuitive Life Coaching Why she encourages skepticism and curiosity, always How she deals with painful / obnoxious / frustrating thoughts that come up...especially those ones that circle back around for YEARS (PS - this is where she talks about getting through the "uncomfortable present, where growth lives" - brilliant) She also answers: How do you practically opt in for beliefs that serve you (like "What I want is totally possible"...!) and opt out of beliefs that don't? You have a clear COMMITMENT to yourself & what you want You bring that commitment into focus in some way every single day And you challenge the things in your life that don't contribute to that commitment And: How do you get yourself to do things in service of that commitment when you don't feel like it?? She thinks about "moving my needle in the direction that's in alignment with [her] commitment to [herself]." (And lets herself "throw a tantrum internally" if that's what needs to happen.) (AND feels like she stays on her own team the whole time.) SO GOOD!! Enjoy. Welcome to another episode of Wild and Precious Conversations. This week, I introduce you to the FREE Science of Well Being class taught through Cousera by Dr. Laurie Santos at Yale. This week, I think Dr. Laurie Santos’ Yale course was on my mind as I contemplated Magic vs Science. I took her “Happiness Class” a few years ago when my family needed, frankly, a reminder of what happiness was.I think that is what was behind my thesis that emotional fitness ain’t Magic — It’s science. And kinda boring science, too. The podcast episode is admittedly a bit meandering this week but the gist is that the Wellness Industry was worth 3.72 TRILLION dollars back in 2015.Clearly, there is nothing wrong with spending money on things like a spa vacation, or a beautiful serene home. Clearly, there are people who can’t afford even basic things and struggle to feed their children and stay warm in winter.Between those extremes, many of us eek out our lives trying to get more emotionally fit — more emotionally well. We occasionally splurge on expensive solutions to our wellness deficit, buying a program or spa package or fitness thingy when, really, that is all smoke and mirrors or snake oi.Speaking of snake oil…have you ever wondered where that term came from? Turns out, there’s a bit of truth to it but, like many things, the medicine got diluted over time and when money started changing hands…Turns out, the best ways to become more emotionally it, achieve wellness as it were, are the following:Practice what you are good at.Savor your life — Notice things like your bare feet on the floor, the fact that you have hot water, the feeling of snow on your face.Practice gratitude Kindness for othersStay socially connectedExerciseSleep wellMeditateCarve out timeThese are all things that are taught in Dr. Laurie Santos’ free class, by the way…Notes:Wild and Precious Courses. — The Self Care Course Gives much more detail on the steps to take in order to fully feel all your emotions in a healthy way.Photo by Greg Rakozy on UnsplashThe Science of Well Being — Dr. Laurie Santos’ course on happiness. What Wellness isBest Self Care is Kindness to OthersTrue Story of Snake OilOnward. I have changed course a bit and we are moving into magic. The Underbelly Project: A weekly workout for your emotional strength and flexibility. The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby

BECOMING EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY: Feelings. They happen to everyone, all the time. And yet, we don't always acknowledge them or talk about our feelings, much less take guidance from our emotions. Particularly in our culture, individuals and couples on a quest of "Happiness" can come to believe that being happy means being relatively free of dark emotions, like anger, sadness or fear. In fact, the opposite is true: Research shows that the happiest, most emotionally healthy people are actually the ones who are most comfortable with the full range of their emotions. Emotionally healthy people tend to be both self-accepting and self-aware: They know how they feel, and they have a great deal of tolerance and self-compassion when they're not feeling so great emotionally. They don't try to avoid bad feelings, and they also know how to (gently, appropriately) support themselves through challenging times.  Emotional Health: Finding a Balance Emotionally healthy people tend to be attuned to their emotions (and those of others). They know how to "lean in" to hard feelings with acceptance and without judgment. However, even though they're fully connected with their feelings they may not always react or take action from their emotions. A core component of authentic emotional health is knowing which feelings to listen to and which feelings to leave alone. It can be hard to develop emotional health and learn how to stay in balance between taking wisdom from your emotions, but not always "obeying them. Learning how to tell the difference between helpful and unhelpful feelings, helps you develop self-compassion, self-understanding, and self-control.  Becoming Emotionally Healthy is a Personal Growth Process A key aspect of holistic personal growth is learning how to have an authentic, self-aware, and sensitive relationship with your own emotions. This kind of powerful personal growth work often addresses:  The life experiences that shaped your emotional reality and core beliefs Acknowledging any unfinished business with the past Identifying and understanding your unique emotional triggers Figuring out which feelings are guiding you helpfully Using your emotions to connect with your hopes, dreams and values Pinpointing the emotions that are getting in your way Developing self-compassionand acceptance of feelings without judgment Learning how to cope with big, dark emotions in a healthy way Learning how to stay in balance emotionally, no matter what's going on It's a lot! While this type of personal growth work often takes months (if not years) of focused attention in therapy or life coaching,it's so worth it. Becoming emotionally healthy is a foundational life skill for anyone on the path of self-actualization.  The Benefits of Cultivating Emotional Health Learning how to manage your emotions skillfully allows you to have better relationships with others, feel happier, improve your self-esteem, and also create a meaningful, values-based life for yourself. It's worth talking about, and that's where we're going together today on The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast. In addition to talking through all of the above, I'm answering some specific listener questions like: "How do I get my emotions under control and stop being so reactive?" "How do I stop allowing my anxiety to get in the way of my relationships?" "How do I feel less numb and 'blah' and more engaged with my life?"” All for YOU, on this episode of the podcast.  See you there! He is the co-owner of The Practice Bali and has a remarkably diverse bio which includes retirement from the Australian Military as a major, service to the Olympics as a Security Consultant, Fitness Instructor, NLP Master Practitioner, Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, keynote speaker and internationally acclaimed coach. Carl has been studying the science of happiness and testing out what some of the leading happiness experts have to say for more than a decade. Here, Carl shares a bit about his happiness and authentic success journey with me We chat about the importance of the 6 pillars to optimum health Physical Activity Nutrient Abundance Detoxification Rest Mindfulness Wholeheartedness Just like yoga is the is about progressing through the physical movement to access the breath (Pranayama) in order to access the consciousness, the same method is needed to access consciousness with the 6 steps above. We chat about how meditation is an important daily task to fully thrive in today's over sensory world. "I have travelled the road less travelled, the road well travelled, and a lot of whacky paths in between. One of the life-changing paths started with a personal development course in 1999, which caused me to delve into the exciting world of personal development, where I develop an insatiable thirst for knowledge and wisdom, along with physical mind-body practices like yoga and meditation. As an Australian Army Major at the age of 29, I decided at one point that the box I had learned awesome skills in was just not big enough so I resigned, skipped countries, and took up a role as a Consultant to the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games. My leap of faith lead to five amazing years consulting to mega sports events across the world. But it was in 2007, where I finally found the courage to leave my cushy consulting work to follow my true calling of helping people to tap into their full potential. It was time to set up a Coaching practice, with Bali as my main base. Fast forward a few years and I have now coached CEO’s, elite athletes, world record holders, actors, UN workers, business owners, entrepreneurs and everything in between. I have also presented seminars to companies like Chevron, Aspire Zone, FINN Group and the SWIRE Group. Plus I run adventure retreats abroad and now authored three books (The Guidebook to Happiness, The Guidebook to Optimum Health, and The Guidebook to Authentic Success). In the end, I just love seeing people tap into (a lot) more of the potential I know they all have. With 20 years of strategic planning skills, plus skills as a NLP master practitioner, reiki master, personal fitness trainer, hypnotherapist, and Coach, I am fascinated to find the little things we can start doing or stop doing, to unlock our latent potential." On this episode of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast I'm speaking with Sir John Hargrave about his new book, "Mindhacking." In it, Sir John takes a fresh and funny look at how our thoughts determine both our emotions, and our reality. Mindhacking is based on tried and true methods for learning how to create a "Happy Mind" -- Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness Training. Both are reliable, helpful strategies that have been used by decades by life coaches and therapists. But Sir John uses the metaphor of computer programming to understand how to reprogram your brain to get better outcomes. I really enjoyed talking with Sir John about his ideas, as we share so many of the same evidence-based views on how people change: • How self awareness of your "old patterns" is the first step in creating new ones• How essential mindfulness skills are to feeling happy and well• And how learning how to shift your thoughts allows you to create healthy new feelings AND behaviors. So listen to our conversation and learn how to improve your mental focus, "debug your mind" of problematic thoughts, and create your very own Reality Distortion Field -- just like Steve Jobs! Essential Success Strategy: When to Say YES and How to Say No

Life Masterclass with Carl Massy

Knowing when to say YES and when to say NO is not only essential to the Richard Branson's and Warren Buffet's of the world, but is HUGELY important for each and every one of us. In this episode of The Happiness Class we not only look out how best to make the decisions for a YES or NO, but I talk about 'why' we might have a challenge saying 'No' and what to do about this. In my experience, as much fun as the movie 'Yes Man' with Jim Carrey is, it is often the things we don't say 'No' too, that have the biggest impact on our lives. That is because for most of us, it is easier to say yes than to say no, especially to the personal stuff. I have had a number of clients of late, doing one of my coaching programs (the 30-Day Happiness Challenge), that have told me that they want to have more confidence. Since I am a lover of thinking, I decided to direct my attention to figuring out more about confidence. What is confidence? Where does it come from? Is there something or anything that precedes it? Do you have it or not? Are you born with it or can it be taught? So this weeks Happiness Class is all about understanding more about Confidence and what are the conditions that will create more Confidence for yourself. And what are your Beliefs; when it comes to Confidence. You are going to love what I have found. Because there is hope for us all. Regardless of how we came into this world. You will also learn a four-letter word that is essential for successfully gaining more confidence. So here's to building up our Confidence! Have a great day. Acceptance is A Miracle Cure

Of late I have had a number of clients struggling with 'difficult people'; which is something we can all relate to I am sure. What I was aware of each time with them was that they were fighting with the REALITY of what this other person was showing up with. And as Byron Katie says, "When I argue with reality I lose, but only 100% of the time." So step one for dealing with other people is to 'accept' that they are who they are and have probably been showing up the same way for the entire time you have known them. You are not accepting their 'behaviour', you are accepting that they are who they are and act a most probable way. Then you can do something about it - which I will share with you in my usual VERY PRACTICAL Happiness Class. So pull up a seat and tune into The Happiness Class to learn how to use this miracle cure called 'Acceptance'. I guarantee what I share with you in this Class can completely change the (challenging) relationships in your life. As always please share what you learn here. This weeks Happiness Class was inspired by a number of Coaching clients who were trying so hard to keep it together. And in my opinion, maybe too hard. So I let them know that it is totally ok to melt down on the odd occasion. This is a great way to release and let go of 'stuff' that you may have built up in your mind and body. Once you release, and get rid of the old (or the past), you open yourself up to new experiences, thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Given my focus on practical tips, tools and strategies, I also talk about specific ways to get yourself back up on your feet after this meltdown. And for starters, you don't have to do it or figure it all out yourself. So I hope you get some great insights or tools out of this weeks Happiness Class and remember if you have any questions or comments for me, head over to my Facebook Page, or my website at: http://carlmassy.com to connect or get some cool freebies. We all know about good habits and bad habits and how they can take us forward or backwards, but knowing is not enough. The real question is "how can I create a powerful habit?" So that is the topic of this weeks Happiness Class. A look at what it means to create habits and how best is it to do so. Inspired by a bunch of previous work, plus recently reading a book called 'Superhuman by Habit'. Also having recently returned from 2 weeks back in Australia (since I now live in Bali), I was reminded of the value of catching up with friends that you haven't seen or spoken with in a long time. It feels SO GOOD to do it. I caught up with people I had not seen in 20+ years and it was great. So I challenge you to do a bit of that yourself. It will make you and keep you Happy for ages. My apologies for 2 weeks of no Happiness Classes while I was back in Australia, bit now I AM BACK. (Actually Schwarzenegger was recently in Oz ;-)) Have a fantastic day and please ask me any questions you have, on my Facebook Page or at http://carlmassy.com. Take care Carl

If the technology of Facebook and Twitter and WhatsApp, etc. has increased the level of connection we have with people, do we feel more 'connected'? This the question I address in this Happiness Class and I also consider the idea of loneliness - which I consider through my observation to be quite prevalent in this apparently very connected wotld. The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby

As a marriage counselor, I've learned through the years that there are fundamental differences between relationships that end, and ones that are reparable. And as sad as it is to work with couples who ultimately decide to split, in many cases it's really a good thing for both partners.  Of course break-ups are sad, and hard. There is loss, and grieving to do when your heart is broken. It's especially difficult if you're not the one who called things off. You have the right to be sad and hurt. And, I'd also like to offer you some perspective on why this break up may actually have been a good thing. Key points: 1) There was an unsolvable problem. 2) Your break-up saved you from a life of misery. 3) Your failed relationship changed your life for the better.
