Boost your mood and optimism with four habits that will change your life. Discover the research-backed strategies that Matt learned from happiness expert Shawn Achor. Optimism is one of the strongest predictors of career success and life satisfaction. These four habits take as little as two minutes each day and will increase your gratitude, reduce your stress, and strengthen your social connections. Join Matt O'Neill this week and take on the 21-Day Happiness Challenge to boost both your well-being and success. Because everything gets better when you feel happier. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Why happiness is elusive despite achievements and external factors The pursuit of happiness How negativity works and the key to true happiness The four habits to increase optimism The 21-day Happiness Challenge [06:25] Rediscovering True Happiness Within In our pursuit of happiness, we often look to external factors. We believe that achieving certain goals or possessing certain things will bring us joy. We work tirelessly to earn enough money, find a life partner, have children, and eventually retire, all in the hopes of attaining happiness. But despite all our efforts, we still find ourselves feeling unfulfilled. The truth is that happiness is not found in these external circumstances; it resides within us. If we strip away all negative thoughts and patterns, what remains is the innate happiness of our being. However, society has conditioned us to believe that happiness is contingent upon material achievements and societal milestones. We are taught to believe that if we can just reach the next level, then we will finally be happy. But time and again, we realize that these milestones only provide fleeting satisfaction. It's time to shift our perspective and realize that true happiness is not found in the pursuit of external validation, but in embracing the happiness that already exists within us. [11:04] The Key to True Happiness The power of emotions is contagious, as both negativity and positivity can spread from person to person. Our brain's mirror neurons and empathy enable us to unconsciously absorb the emotional states of others, impacting our own mood. While removing negative people from our lives isn't the solution, fostering inner positivity allows us to be a beacon of happiness amidst suffering. Putting on our happiness armor each day, we can uplift and inspire those around us, making a positive difference in the world. [22:43] The Four Habits to Increase Optimism The four habits to increase optimism discussed in the transcript are: Write down three new things you're grateful for each day. Go for a 15-minute brisk walk 4-5 times a week. Take two minutes each day to watch your breath through mindfulness meditation. Spend two minutes a day sending praise or thanks to someone new via text or email. Notable quotes: [06:41] Everything we do, we're trying to be happy. Well, then why aren't we?... because we're chasing after happiness in the wrong place. [06:52] [12:07] Negativity is contagious. And so is positivity. What are you spreading? [12:15] [13:11] Become so good at your internal happiness that your mood lifts everyone around you. [13:32] [16:42] Everything improves with happiness. Today's podcast is about why self-awareness is important to our happiness journey. Many people tell me that they don't know where to start on their happiness journey, because they don't know what their happiness actually looks like. If you feel like this, you are not alone. What I have learned on my happiness journey, is that you don't actually have to know what your ultimate happiness looks like, you just start your journey, and as you learn and grow you will increase your self-awareness and be able to build more happy into your everyday life. Ultimately, it doesn't matter where you are starting from, it just matters that you start. In today's episode I talk about how while I was creating the Building Your Happiness Foundation Course, I realized that by just working on building the habits and mindset shifts into our lives we are not only increasing happiness, but we are increasing our self-awareness. Not only is self-awareness important to our happiness journey, it also helps us get better at taking care of ourselves. We not only find more happiness but we are in a better position to meet life's stressors head on. Resources I referenced in this episode:The 30 Day Happiness Challenge we are doing this summer. Ever wonder what you can accomplish in an 8 minute phone call?Turns out... A LOT! In this week's episode of The Spark File podcast, Susan + Laura dig into the The New York Times feature "The 7 Day Happiness Challenge" and explore the little things that can make a BIG difference in our relationships and our lives. Take a listen, then ask yourself, "who you gonna call?"...
Do you have a work best friend? New research says work besties are the key to professional and personal happiness. The Gallup organization tracked workplace relationships (non-romantic) and found having a work best friend is good for morale and good for the bottom line. The research showed those relationships are good for employee engagement. Having a work best friend is proven to raise morale, increase productivity and help with employee retention. Most interesting, the need for strong work connections has gone up since the pandemic thanks to an increase in remote work and a decrease in worker satisfaction. Bosses: want to hang onto your people and make them happier without spending money? Create a supportive environment that encourages colleagues to interact beyond the scope of their jobs. Employees: want to enjoy the place you likely spend the bulk of your day? Find a friend and enjoy life on the job together by vesting in each other's personal and professional lives. The research is so overwhelming that wellness writer Jancee Dunn included the importance of work friends in Day 5 of the NY Times Wells series, the "7 Day Happiness Challenge." My KCRA 3 colleague and work bestie Edie Lambert joins me in this episode to explain how we forged a deep relationship despite the fact we've never worked in the same room at the same time. And we'll offer a four-step plan on how to find a friend at work. In today's episode I am talking about how "Doing Something Different" and going outside your comfort zone can bring you small wins to celebrate. Its not just what you learn outside your comfort zone, but the pure fact that you went outside your comfort zone is a large, small win!Today I tell you about a recent clash I had with my comfort zone. The unsurprising rise of fear and self doubt, and how I think pushing through the discomfort is worth doing it afraid. Its not easy, and the fear and self doubt keep coming back. However, the more you get outside your comfort zone, the more confident you will get in your ability to do it.Sometimes we cannot figure out how to get out of this rut we are in. We get stuck in a routine and it at worst frustrates us, and at best discourages us. We hope for something to change but we are stuck in our comfort zone.Do something different! Try something new! Stop doing the same thing and expecting things to change. Our next 21 Day Happiness Challenge is starting Monday 7 November. You can Sign Up here so you are ready to go on the 7th. Mental health is a topic that has been taboo for decades. The stigma and shame around mental health mean many people don't get the help and support they need and end up suffering and struggling in silence. There has been a reported increase in panic disorders, anxiety, stress, and more, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health is the pandemic that isn't being talked about. In this episode, Hala is joined by mental health leaders Dr. Daniel Amen, Dr. Robin Smith, Dr. Owen Muir, Amy Morin, Jonas Koffler, and more, to talk about the state of mental health in the world, why normalizing mental health struggles is important, grieving and the process of healing, the potential of psychedelics in the future of psychiatry, and what daily habits we can start to today to improve our mental discipline and ultimately lead happier, healthier lives. Topics Include: - Today's mental health statistics - COVID-19's effect on Gen Z's mental health - Why the language surrounding mental health matters - Why “brainwashing” can be helpful in mental health - Healthy coping strategies for trauma and grief - Navigating friendships and relationships during a period of struggle - Defining mental discipline - How mental discipline helped Dr. Amen get through the loss of his father - The value of simple solutions like exercise, sleep, and diet on mental health - The future of mental health medicine - And other topics… Dr. Daniel Amen is one of America's leading psychiatrists and brain health experts. Dr Amen is board certified in General Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Today's Living Your One True Authentic Life podcast is an inspiring interview with Cindy Stradling, the founder of the Courage In Action Organization. When Cindy asked herself, “What if?” she had no idea how much joy that seemingly inconsequential question would bring to her life. Now, 8 years after she asked that question and put her idea out to a few friends, she is sharing her happier with many. I loved getting to know Cindy and more about the “Courage in Action” Organization in today's interview. We aren't all going to start a charitable organization with the answer to our “what if?”, but as Cindy points out, “What if your purpose is just to be the best you, you can be?” She really is an inspiring woman. I hope you enjoy getting to know this amazing woman as much as I did. And, maybe you know someone who could benefit from the Courage In Action Organization.Resources I referenced this week:Here is the link to the Courage In Action website so you can find more about the amazing work they do.Don't forget we are running a new and improved 21 Day Happiness Challenge starting January 31st, 2022. Sometimes we cost ourselves our happiness by holding onto things we'd do better to let go of. Underneath many of our challenges is the hidden expectation that a happy life is a trouble-free life or that a happy life requires a certain amount of wealth and success. Letting go of these two beliefs can free you to see your life in new ways and find happiness despite its challenges. To comment or ask a question, visit the show notes page or the Big Happy Life Facebook Page.
One of my favourite books (I talk about it quite a lot in this episode) is Solve for Happy by Mo Gawdat. From this book, I learned about the link between expectations and happiness and that's what led to today's tip. When you understand the expectations driving your experiences, you're better able to challenge and question them - and when you do that, you're better able to shape your thinking towards feeling happier. To comment, visit the show notes page or the Big Happy Life Facebook page.
We're accustomed to referring to negative and positive emotions but what if they're nothing of the sort? What if they're just comfortable or uncomfortable? Our ability to experience happiness is determined - at least in part - by our ability to make best use of all other emotions in the spectrum. Inspired by Dr Joan Rosenberg's book, "90 Seconds to a life you love", this episode explores 3 steps you can take when you experience uncomfortable emotions so you're able to make best use of the experience. Visit the show notes page or the Big Happy Life Facebook page to comment or ask questions.
Today's tip is all about paying attention to the thoughts that drive your behaviour. When we're playing "shark music" in the background, we end up stressed, make poor choices and end up regretting those choices or judging ourselves harshly - which limits our ability to experience happiness. This episode explores the patterns in 'shark music thoughts' and what to do when we experience them. To comment or ask questions, visit the show notes or the Big Happy Life Facebook page.
Happiness can be approached from two perspectives. The first is to 'big up the positive'. That's what fattening the good is all about. The second is remove the things that make you unhappy. During this 5-day challenge, we cover both perspectives and offer tips for achieving happiness via both routes. The Day 1 Tip is to Fatten the Good. It is so easy to become overwhelmed by the stressful events in our lives and the things that are outside our control but, in doing so, we make ourselves feel smaller, 'less than' and unable to cope. By consciously making an effort to pay attention to the small wins, the little things within our control and the everyday things we can be grateful for, we can change perspective, shift focus, see ourselves differently and get better results. This episode shares ideas on how to achieve these results. If you'd like to comment or ask questions, visit the Big Happy Life Facebook Page or comment on the show notes page.

“If you’re not able to strengthen the weak muscles, there's a greater force restricting your body.” -Sue Ellen Strong Sue Ellen Strong is an expert in myofascial release as well as craniosacral and neuromuscular therapies, yoga therapeutics and bioenergetics. She studied myofascial release with John Branes and uses this powerful technique to treat chronic pain conditions including sports injuries, neck and back pain, concussions and migraines as well as just for enhancing optimal health. She is one of the creators of Myofascial Freedom, a practice in Morristown, NJ. Whereas many traditional approaches to treating pain act as band-aids and only treat symptoms, Sue Ellen is able to identify and treat the cause of pain and dysfunction in the body through an in-depth analysis of the body’s myofascia. In today’s interview, Sue Ellen explains the important fascial system that is so often overlooked and how we can all benefit from myofascial release. Join us in The Prosperity Practice Group to particpate in the 21 Day Happiness Challenge: This is based off of the Shawn Achor TED Talk: The Happy Secret to Better Work Essentially you will pick one habit to create and practice it for 21 days which will essentially lead you to a life you desire... a happier, more joyful, more fulfilled YOU! Here are the five habits to choose from: Three Gratitudes: Pause to take note of three new things each day that you are grateful for. Doing so will help your brain start to retrain its pattern of scanning the world, looking not just for the negative inputs but for the positive ones. Journaling: Similar to the gratitude practice, but in this case, detail — in writing — one positive experience each day. This will help you find meaning in the activities of the day, rather than just noticing the task itself. Exercise: Exercising for 10 minutes a day not only brings physical benefits, but it also teaches your brain to believe your behavior matters, which then carries (positively) into other activities throughout the day. Meditation: Take just two minutes per day to simply breathe and focus on your breath going in and out. Doing so will train your mind to focus, reduce stress, and help you be more present in this moment. Random Acts of Kindness: This can be something simple, and Shawn suggests writing one positive email to praise or thank someone each day. Not only does it benefit the recipient, but it also increases your feeling of social support. Which one will you choose?!? Click the link NOW and come on in and let us know! https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheProsperityPractice/ To watch the TED talk click this link: https://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_the_happy_secret_to_better_work?language=en

If you’re looking to get your happy back THIS SHOW IS FOR YOU! I have six tips that I KNOW can promote your internal happiness so that you can produce positive external results. What I’d like to offer you is another way of thinking. It is not something that I paid for or something that has made me a million dollars (yet) :-) Happiness is something that I had to learn just by living a conscious life. There were no quick fixes, no external antidotes and I couldn’t purchase happy from Amazon. I couldn’t get it in a drink, a pill or “stuff.” Last year I did the “100 Day Happiness Challenge” and it changed my life. Not only did it give me permission to find something to be happy about every day, it also forced me to realize this about happiness: It is often circumstantialHappiness is a choiceHappiness is a habit It is a mantra that you recite to yourself everyday “I will be in Victory today!” What it all comes down to is this, you get to decide if the challenge can become a celebration and if the tragedy can somehow be turned into a triumph. We have to make a conscious choice to take back what was already ours to begin with, “OUR HAPPINESS” and decide that we are going to hold on to it no matter the circumstance or the situation. The truth is we are in our feelings all of the time and it is ultimately up to us to decide which feelings are going to take precedence. The default feeling will become the feeling that we base our lives on and make decisions from (VICTIM-BULLY-EQUALIZER). On a scale of 1-to-10, how happy are you?
I have had a number of clients of late, doing one of my coaching programs (the 30-Day Happiness Challenge), that have told me that they want to have more confidence. Since I am a lover of thinking, I decided to direct my attention to figuring out more about confidence. What is confidence? Where does it come from? Is there something or anything that precedes it? Do you have it or not? Are you born with it or can it be taught? So this weeks Happiness Class is all about understanding more about Confidence and what are the conditions that will create more Confidence for yourself. And what are your Beliefs; when it comes to Confidence. You are going to love what I have found. Because there is hope for us all. Regardless of how we came into this world. You will also learn a four-letter word that is essential for successfully gaining more confidence. So here's to building up our Confidence! Have a great day. Cheers Carl PS: As always if you want to ask we questions just head over to my Facebook Page or jump on http://carlmassy.com to ask me more.
I want to share with you a strategy I use for myself and one that I remind my clients about. We have also added it into the 30-Day Happiness Challenge since it has such a high RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI). When something only takes a minute but profoundly affects your day and your brain, it is time to use it. This is something you can use IMMEDIATELY after you finish listening to the Podcast. And if it does not make you feeling immediately better, and lingers, I will give you your money back. ;-) Have a fantastic day!! And if you have any questions head over to my Facebook Page or send me an email via my website: http://carlmassy.com. Cheers Carl

Have you heard of the Kaizen Way? Maybe you have heard of it before called the ‘Toyota Way’. It is the secret goal setting technique that Toyota used after the Second World War to become the leading car manufacturer in the world. Imagine if you could apply their goal setting techniques and principles to get the same level of success in your own life. Well you can. And in this Strategic Happiness Podcast Carl Massy will be teaching you exactly why this principle works best for your brain. How it allows you to overcome fear and achieve the goals that you most want. Where most Goal Setting systems call for MASSIVE (and sometimes scary) actions – the Kaizen way shows you how to succeed, without having to leap over tall buildings and stop speeding bullets. It is a goal setting system for us mere mortals! Based on teachings from the book by Robert Maurer PhD, called ‘One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way’. In this great book, 'Loving What Is' by Byron Katie, she introduces us to the idea that the greatest amount of emotional pain we experience in our lives is because of the stories and statements that we buy into. The stories that we tell ourselves are more based on assumptions than reality. And one of Byron Katie's greatest reminders is in her statement "When I argue with reality I lose. But only 100% of the time." She has also developed 4 amazing questions, which she simply calls The Work, which are profound in their simplicity and effect. In this Podcast I introduce you to those 4 great questions and how you can use them as a fantastic happiness strategy in your own life. One of the best happiness strategies you can learn, and apply in your life is to be ridiculously diligent at finding the lesson in all life's curve-balls, screw-ups, mishaps and disasters. One of the best life formulas is E + R = O. Or the Event, plus our Response to that event, determines the final outcome. The better we get at our responses, the better outcomes we will get in life; especially when things goes wrong. This is a Happiness Tip that you really need to learn. In this Podcast I (Carl Massy) was robbed about 2hrs prior to the recording, so it is raw, real and I tell you exactly what strategies and thought processes I go through when dealing with any upsets in life. So let me walk you through the steps I adopt when I am face to face with someone doing me wrong and how I reframe the event to get the greatest lesson from it. How you ever had a feeling in your mind, or in a place you cannot even identify, that is sapping you of energy? I know I have. In fact as I was coming to the end of my day the feeling was starting to take a life of its own and the result was that I started to feel pretty awful.
