David McBride, a retired Major and former legal officer in the Australian Army, discusses his actions of leaking information to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that ultimately led to the exposure of alleged war crimes committed by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan. David highlights the political manipulation of the war narrative and emphasises the need for clear rules of engagement. David became disillusioned with the Australian military's handling of war crimes and the seeming politicisation of the war in Afghanistan. He observed a lack of proper investigations into war crimes and a focus on appearances rather than effectiveness. McBride suspected that the Australian government was trying to cover up war crimes to maintain their alliance with the US.  David decided to take action and expose the political games played by leaking classified documents to the media. David McBride discusses his career and the challenges he faced when he discovered evidence of mishandling of allegations by Defence and political seniors. He highlights the lack of accountability and poor leadership within the military, and the difficulty he faced in trying to bring attention to these issues. McBride emphasises the need for a fair trial and public support to address the systemic problems within the military. He also shares his thoughts on ANZAC Day and the importance of genuine care for veterans. Kathy Kelly -  A call to desert   - an update on the war in Ukraine. Ukraine's situation escalates as the use of killer drones increases. Kathy pleads that the USA do not condone nor support war by not providing weapons. She urges the need to end the killing. She begs for the powerful countries to become involved and stop the war, with the promise that nuclear weapons must not be used. Asia Pacific Correspondent Nic Maclellan there - speaking with Tuesday Hometimes Jan Bartlett about China's long history in the Pacific region. Australian Military defense programs and bases in the pacific region, the USA and China's compete with each other by strategically positioning Navy and Military in the pacific sea and surrounding counties, however this is taking away from climate change goals. The pacific countries are aligned with powerful countries, Fiji and Solomon islands try to avoid aligning with China and the US. The Pacific faces climate change issues in the region and collectively wants to lower fossil fuel use. Hostility around China's exploitation of resources in the region, Nic reminds us of the region's history with exploitation is long and that many countries have done the same. The pacific islands want climate action, Nic questions whether Australia's new government will be able to support the needs of our ocean neighbors. Stuart Rees there - speaking with Tuesday Hometimes Jan Bartlett about the lying pandemic- the antidote is of course community media like 3CR. Prof Stuart Rees is an Australian academic, human rights activist and founder of the Sydney Peace Foundation and a regular commentator on Tuesday Hometime, they discuss monkey pocks, the history of deceit from politicians around the world and Australian election results. Pat Anderson on the Origins of The Uluru Statement From The Heart - speaking as part of a Search Foundation public event on constitutional recognition in April last year (2021). A core promise of the new Federal government - enacting The Uluru Statement will be a historical change. Thanks to Annie from Solidarity Breakfast for the recording.

Welcome back to the final Talking Leadership episode for 2020. A big thanks to Colin Lea who is a Partner at the Carey Group. The takeaway learning for me, not everyone wants to be a leader. Colin identified that in both the military and civilian contexts, many highly skilled individuals want to work in a technical / operational role and have no desire to progress to leadership roles. The ‘however’ that Colin points out is that people being people – our priorities can change and maybe a technical expert in your business wants to move into a leadership role but does not know how to go about it. A situation that leaders really need to be aware of in order to grow their teams and businesses. This interview adds to the amazing insights provided in this series focusing on leadership in the Australian Military context. The process of hosting was made easy with the assistance of my co-host, Ben Deverson the Founder and Director at Lawganised. A lot more to come in this series in February 2021 and a huge thanks to Ben who will stay on as co-host.Thank you for following the podcast and please share the episode, follow me on YouTube and if please subscribe to support the channel.

After some intense cross border encounters in Germany, Switzerland and Holland, his parents Zdeny and Philomena had fled Czechoslovakia in 1947 and were ordered to travel by train to Naples, where life was no picnic to say the least. Tom's early formative years were spent in Parramatta and after being educated at the King's School and North Sydney Boys High he studied law at Sydney University, where he won an Australia Britain Society scholarship, which took him on an overseas study tour. In 1976 he joined the Royal Australian Navy as a naval legal officer and served in most Australian States and in the United States during the 1990-91 Gulf War, after a short stint in Pakistan and the Khyber Pass. After 20 years in the Australian Military he established a full time career as a mediator and facilitator, practicing throughout Australia, including the Northern Territory before settling in Brisbane in 2002. An early pioneer of mediation and alternative dispute resolution and mentored by Sir Laurence Street, he has promoted its benefits both here in Australia and overseas. Tom is accredited internationally and in particular, in India, PNG and Hong Kong and has promoted mediation across Vietnam in recent years. Tom has been fortunate to have enormous support from his parents and his loving wife Janet and three children, Louisa, Katherine and William. This, along with the great support from many friends and colleagues across the country has played a major role in shaping him every step of the way. Growing up in a refugee household, where English was a second language to German, had its challenges and benefits. Assimilation was the order of the day and resilience and unimaginable strength and sacrifice shown by his parents and his grandmother created a unique background and environment. At prep school he struggled with his English essays and often his mother stepped in to help, despite her own challenges learning a new language. Being a contemporary of the author John Marsden helped to inspire Tom, years later, to try his hand at writing. Tom was always a happy child, able to keep up a positive disposition, despite the many home pressures and stresses of day to day life. His father was a successful Sydney artist and Tom played a major role in the management and promotion of the cottage industry which contributed to helping pay the prohibitive school fees. The early exposure to the arts and artistic endeavour provided a strong and enduring legacy. Finally, in 1976 whilst at sea in the Pacific Ocean with the Navy he wrote his first poem and found a way to express his own artistic creativity. Tom is optimistic about his next book of poems and has commenced writing a series of short stories. Life, love and work intertwine with nature in a unique series of poems. No matter what the day to day challenges are, as life unfolds from youth to almost three score & 10, Tom Stodulka tries to face each day with positivity. Journey with Tom through tales of Australian life, discover local flora and fauna and learn from his experiences in his work as a mediator. Tom shares his deep appreciation of nature, his passion for his work and takes the reader on a journey through life.

He is now in the process of writing his first book.Luke found meditation around ten years ago and he originally used it as a tool to improve work performance. However, at the being of 2016, he experienced a series of events in a three-month period that rocked him. This included the end of ten-year relationship, a shocking business failure, a major falling out with a close friend combined with his father and his brother-in-law simultaneously being diagnosed with cancer. After the traumatic series of events he found himself at an ashram in India where he immersed himself in the different teachings and traditions of meditation. The key lesson he learnt through the trauma and subsequent teachings is that when there's no one to turn to you can turn inwards and find everything you need. “All the answers lay there and as long as you're still breathing you have everything you need. Everything else is just a bonus or a lesson”.Coming back to Australia from India, Luke has made it his mission to try and introduce meditation to as many people as possible.Over the past four years Luke’s guided meditations have been embraced by thousands all around the world and he has worked to bring the benefits of meditation into the corporate world including the likes of American Express, KPMG & Lululemon.Luke’s latest venture, Soul Alive, aims to help introduce meditation to the broader community in a convenient and relatable manner.Luke McLeod’s Book recommendationMan's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl A book written in 1946 chronicling the author’s experiences as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camp during World War II and the key lesson he learned from surviving the trauma.

The Principles of War - Lessons from Military History on Strategy, Tactics and Leadership.

We start our look at the Battle of Long Tan, which occured on the 18th August 1966, 4km east of the Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat.  Outnumber 20:1, the Australians took 18 KIA and 24 WIA in one of the most important and most famous battles of the whole Australian involvement in Long Tan. Our guide through Australian Military's History most famous rubber plantation is Dave Sabben.  Dave was the Platoon Commander of 12 Platoon, Delta Company on that day at Long Tan.  Conscription has been used by many countries through history as they rapidly increase the size of their defence forces in response to changing strategic circumstances, circumstances that have changed quickly and require a faster response than could be achieved with the full time Defence Force. How did the Australian Defence Force mobilised for operations in Vietnam?  We look at conscription and the history of professional armies. We start by looking at some of the components of a professional army and what the role of conscription is within the concept of National readiness.  Professional armies are very expensive to maintain and so we look at 2 components of readiness that are used to decrease the cost of having a large standing force.  How was conscription for Vietnam different to conscription in Australia during World War 2? Dave starts by talking us through the conscription process and his initial training at Kapooka.  We look at the reason for the conscription in the 1960's. Dave discusses what the aim of the training program was and the skills that officers were to receive at Scheyville.  How was the training program designed and how were leadership skills developed at OTU Scheyville?   Check out the show notes for the podcast for images and more details for this and other podcast episodes. Carl has been studying the science of happiness and testing out what some of the leading happiness experts have to say for more than a decade. Here, Carl shares a bit about his happiness and authentic success journey with me We chat about the importance of the 6 pillars to optimum health Physical Activity Nutrient Abundance Detoxification Rest Mindfulness Wholeheartedness Just like yoga is the is about progressing through the physical movement to access the breath (Pranayama) in order to access the consciousness, the same method is needed to access consciousness with the 6 steps above. We chat about how meditation is an important daily task to fully thrive in today's over sensory world. "I have travelled the road less travelled, the road well travelled, and a lot of whacky paths in between. One of the life-changing paths started with a personal development course in 1999, which caused me to delve into the exciting world of personal development, where I develop an insatiable thirst for knowledge and wisdom, along with physical mind-body practices like yoga and meditation. As an Australian Army Major at the age of 29, I decided at one point that the box I had learned awesome skills in was just not big enough so I resigned, skipped countries, and took up a role as a Consultant to the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games. My leap of faith lead to five amazing years consulting to mega sports events across the world. But it was in 2007, where I finally found the courage to leave my cushy consulting work to follow my true calling of helping people to tap into their full potential. It was time to set up a Coaching practice, with Bali as my main base. Fast forward a few years and I have now coached CEO’s, elite athletes, world record holders, actors, UN workers, business owners, entrepreneurs and everything in between. I have also presented seminars to companies like Chevron, Aspire Zone, FINN Group and the SWIRE Group. Plus I run adventure retreats abroad and now authored three books (The Guidebook to Happiness, The Guidebook to Optimum Health, and The Guidebook to Authentic Success). In the end, I just love seeing people tap into (a lot) more of the potential I know they all have. This horrific tale is about a time where Brisbane started looking like US city and our ally in World War became our enemy on the streets of Brisbane City!

Helen Bayes: Three courageous Peace Grannies Arrested for Obstruction at Australian Military Base

Why were three courageous Australian Quaker grannies for Peace arrested by military police for blocking the road to Shoalwater Bay Military Base Queensland, in 2015? BUT - That did not deter them. They protested again, at the super secret spy station - Pine Gap on September 2016. Having enticed Helen Bayes into the studio, this interview covers not only the story of these staunch seniors, but also explains something of Quakers, and their peace testimony. As part of Peace Convergence 2015 'Quaker Grannies for Peace' set up a tea table blockading the access road to Samuel Hill / Shoalwater Bay military base, which is used for the Talisman Sabre military exercises. (Talisman Sabre is a biennial joint Australia-United States military exercise. It involves joint exercises performed by the Australian Defence Force and the United States Military across six locations in northern and central Australia, the Coral Sea, and in Honolulu, Denver, and Suffolk, Va., though the bulk of the exercises are concentrated at the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area, and other locations in northern and central Australia.) Grandmother of thirteen, Helen Bayes explains why they would protest this:  "Our Quaker peace testimony from 1661 says 'We utterly deny all outward wars and strife and fighting with outward weapons for any end or under any pretence whatsoever.” The grannies set up a table and chairs and prepared tea and cake in order to engage in dialogue with military personnel. "Negotiation is not currently part of the war rehearsals, so we are drawing attention to this missing element," said Helen, " Yet it essential to achieve peace." The Quaker Grannies said they came "with the conviction that a world of increasingly destructive weaponry threatens our continued existence and that nonviolent strategies are essential to our survival". After being arrested by military police and handed over to local police, the Grannies were convicted, on July 14, 2015, of trespass, and fined $500 each, with no conviction recorded. In 2016 “Quaker Grannies for Peace” set up breakfast on the road to Pine Gap, and invited military personnel arriving for work at the base to sit down with them. The action was one of a series of events marking the 50th anniversary of the secret US military facility at Pine Gap, by groups advocating for the base’s closure. Founder of the Quaker Grannies Helen Bayes said: “We are asking Australians whether it is appropriate for a foreign country to be operating a secret facility with no transparency on Australian soil; a base that may well be implicating Australians in wars that our government has not entered into.” Located half-an-hour's drive south-west of Alice Springs, Pine Gap is one of Australia's most secret sites. It collects various kinds of data from the Asia Pacific and the Middle East, including targeting data for American drone operations and assassinations. Partly run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), Pine Gap is a key contributor to the global surveillance network ECHELON. (New Zealand’s Waihopai Spy Base is also a part of ECHILON, or Five Eyes.  It is a secure communication facility, located near Blenheim, run by New Zealand's Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB).) Helen  Bayes is a Melbourne based English-born activist who won the Australia's Human Rights Medal in 1999. She was born into a Quaker family in Northern England and migrated to Australia in 1966, at age 22. She has 4 adult children and 13 grandchildren. She holds a BA in Social Work and BA (Hons) in Social Administration, and had a 15-year career in the National and State Public Service in the areas of Social Policy and Community Services. Helen resigned from the Public Service and set up an international child rights advocacy NGO called the Australian Section of Defence for Children International, and has served that organisation in Australia, in Geneva, and on the International Council for 20 years. Helen Bayes was awarded the Australian Human Rights Medal for this work in 1999. Helen's concern for the rights of children grew into a fascination with early Quakerism. As Eva Koch Fellow at the Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, she researched the views of the earliest Quakers on the nurturing and guidance of children and young people. She was the James Backhouse Lecturer in 2002 (the Australian equivalent of the SP Gardner Lecture), entitled Respecting the Rights of Children and Young People: A New Perspective on Quaker Faith and Practice. On a lighter side, Helen collects Quaker bonnets, one of which she is wearing in the above photo.
