Max Pearson presents a collection of this week's Witness History episodes from the BBC World Service. It has been 50 years since Abba won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, so we're exploring Swedish history. Also in 1974, Sweden became the first country in the world to offer paid parental leave that was gender neutral. One father who took the leave tells us about this pioneering policy. We hear from one of the inventors of Bluetooth. The technology was named after Harald Bluetooth, a Viking king. Our expert guest is Eva Krutmeijer, Swedish science writer and co-author of the book ' Innovation, the Swedish Way'. Plus, the invention of the three-point safety belt for cars, that is estimated to have saved more than one million lives around the world, and the story behind Sweden's Cinnamon Bun Day. Finally, 1974 was just the beginning for the Swedish quartet, Abba, who shared their name with a herring company. By the end of the decade, they were one of most recognisable music acts of the 20th century. Contributors: Per Edlund - one of the first fathers in his town to take split paid parental leave Sven Mattison - one of the inventors of Bluetooth Eva Krutmeijer - Swedish science writer and co-author of the book 'Innovation, the Swedish Way' Gunnar Ornmark - stepson of Nils Bohlin who invented the three-point safety belt for cars Kaeth Gardestedt - who came up with the idea of Sweden's Cinnamon Bun Day Görel Hanser - manager of Abba (Photo: Abba in 1974. When I was working as an engineer, my company developed a product that relied upon a technology named Bluetooth that connected different devices. Curious about this strange name, I learned that Harald Bluetooth was a Danish king who converted his people to Christianity and united (or connected) the tribes of Denmark. Unfortunately, his son rejected Christianity and overthrew him. Jesus is the perfect Son. He always does the will of His Father. In John 5, we see that the Jewish leaders were committed to persecuting Jesus because He was doing His Father's work (v. 17), claiming God to be His Father (v. 18). Notice that the Gospel of Mark opens with the statement, “The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). For Mark, there was no confusion regarding the Sonship of Jesus. In Luke's gospel, he unfolds how Mary came to know that she was going to have a child. After the angel Gabriel gave her the message, Mary was confused as to the way this would happen, seeing that she was a virgin. Gabriel stated, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). Gabriel wasn't confused. John says, “For this reason they tried all the more to kill him...he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God” (v. 18). We should have no doubts that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God and equal with God. The Bible is clear. >> Christmas is just twelve days away. You may be busy with gift giving, cookie baking, and office parties. In all the hoopla, don't forget the fact that Jesus is the Son of God Who came to take away the sin of the world. Let's remember that the baby in the manger was God's Son.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gabriel no estaba confundido. . See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Shawn discusses Gorm "The Old", who is considered the first historically recognized King of Denmark. A kingdom which still exists today with Queen Margrethe II as its Head of State. Though the main points of his life are still fuzzy at best, Gorm does appear in later writings; however, we are confident of his historical existence in part to the 2 Jelling Runestone's, one of which was commissioned by Gorm himself for his wife, Thyra, and the other commissioned by Gorm's son Harald "Bluetooth" who built one in honor of both his mother and father. Of course, Shawn also discusses his "family ancestry" all the way to Odin along with some of his descendants who would conquer England for a time and form what is now considered the "North Sea Empire" (England, Norway, and Denmark).

03 February 2014 marks the 1,000th anniversary of the death of King Sweyn Forkbeard. Once Forkbeard became the King of Denmark and Norway he started raiding England. After the English massacred thousands of Danes on St. Brice's Day Forkbeard increased his raids until he was able to overthrow the sitting King. Sweyn would never have a chance to rule England, he died shortly after becoming King. Some say he was killed by the ghost of St. Edmund! His reign was short, in fact he holds the record for shortest reign of an English King. But his reign helped establish his son, Cnut as a future King of England. Year 1004: This year came Sweyne with his fleet to Norwich, plundering and burning the whole town. Then he came to Thetford within three weeks after they had plundered Norwich; and, remaining there one night, they spoiled and burned the town; but, in the morning, as they were proceeding to their ships, came Ulfkytel with his army, and said that they must there come to close quarters. And, accordingly, the two armies met together; and much slaughter was made on both sides. ~Anglo-Saxon Chronicles Listen to the episode now Please send any comments, suggestions or topic ideas to podcast@medievalarchives.com If you are enjoying the podcast please considering leaving a rating on iTunes.
