In this episode, Shawn and David wrap up the series on Ragnar Lobrok (cue dozens of solo episodes where Shawn and David have not in fact wrapped up their series on Ragnar Lodbrok), discussing chapters 18 - 20. In tandem with "The Tale of Ragnars Sons", you find out about the fates of the sons of Ragnar, including their deaths. There are then a couple of chapters of some nameless characters (well one is named), who in later years begin discussing the the heroic brothers either in their cups while getting drunk, or looking at monuments set to be reminders of them. The pair explore the descendents of these heroes, leading to the historical origins of 3 Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, tying together the legendary sagas with historical figures like Gorm the Old, Harald Fairhair, and Eirik the Victorious. There is also an interesting passing of the torch where in 1066 William the Conqueror supposedly dug up the grave of Ivar the Boneless (deciding to burn his body), which may represent the end of Anglo-Saxon England and the Viking Age.Ways to support us:If you have been enjoying our show, please write a 5 star review on itunes to help spread our podcast to a wider audience:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/between-two-ravens-a-norse-mythology-podcast/id1604263830Buy Shawn a Beer or Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/tworavenpodcastFollow us for updates or send us a message on Instagram:Instagram: (@TwoRavensPodcast): https://www.instagram.com/tworavenspodcast/Check out David's writing: Walled Garden (https://thewalledgarden.com/davidalexander)Our podcast is part of The Walled Garden Podcast Network. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion three words that seem anything but controversial. Yet today, DEI stands at the heart of a global debate. With the Trump administration actively rolling back DEI initiatives across U.S. federal agencies, the question arises: what ripple effects might this have internationally, especially in India? Has DEI truly taken root in Indian workplaces, or does it remain largely confined to multinational tech companies? Are traditional Indian businesses beginning to embrace it? And what does this mean for organizations that specialize in promoting DEI? Host Dia Rekhi is joined by Dr. Ishani Roy, Founder & CEO Serein and Munira Loliwala, Vice President Business Strategy & Growth, TeamLease Digital to unpack the global backlash, examine the current landscape of DEI in India, and explore its true impact on business outcomes. With insights from a DEI strategist and a recruitment expert, we get a front-row view into how diversity is shaping India Inc. Credits: NewsX Live, GORM, MSNBC, Forbes Breaking News. America might be rowing back on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, but one woman who is fighting to keep interculturalism at the forefront of people's minds is Mamobo Ogoro, the CEO of Irish social enterprise GORM. Ogoro is a Nigerian-Irish Social Psychologist and multi-award-winning social entrepreneur, who is “on a personal mission to unify the world”. Through her work with GORM, she helps organisations in Ireland and around the world develop intercultural leaders. In this episode, Ogoro talks to Róisín Ingle about growing GORM from an idea into a movement, how she works to bridge the gap between diversity and inclusion and how she's become Ireland's first Echoing Green Fellow. But first, Irish Times podcast producer Aideen Finnegan is here to discuss some of the biggest stories from the week, including a dramatic fashion statement at the Grammys, the sexual assault trial taking place in Spain over that infamous World Cup kiss and how Ireland's ambassador to the USA, Geraldine Byrne Nason, is running diplomatic relations in the Trump era. Klippare: Emanuel LehtonenProducent: Urban Lindstedt Hosted on Acast. For a long time I've been attracted by Celtic culture, that has influenced by some way the culture of northern Portugal, where I was born. My wife, though she was born in the south of the country - its a small country : - ) - also enjoys Celtic art, and suddenly our eldest son was playing Galician bag pipe, what came by a surprise because there's no tradition of instrument playing in our families. By the way, we now we live in Sintra (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sintra). Cinneadh faoi threalamh ó Iosrael pléite ag triúr ceannairí. Green Party leader Roderic O'Gorman has revealed that Tánaiste Micheal Martin discussed the decision not to buy military equipment from Israel with himself and Taoiseach Simon Harris. Tá sé tugtha le fios ag ceannaire an Chomhaontais Ghlais Roderic O'Gorman gur phléigh an Tánaiste Micheal Martin an cinneadh gan trealamh míleata a cheannach ó Iosrael leis féin agus leis an Taoiseach Simon Harris. Roderic O'Gorman, however, did not say whether the matter had been referred to Cabinet before the decision was made. Ní dúirt Roderic O'Gorman, áfach, ar cuireadh an cheist faoi bhráid na Comhaireachta sula ndearnadh an cinneadh. The Gorman claimed, however, that Micheál Martin always pays attention to legal advice and is someone who thinks hard about issues. Mhaígh an Gormánach, mar sin féin, go dtugann Micheál Martin aird i gcónaí ar chomhairle dlí agus gur duine é a mhachnaíonn go dian ar cheisteanna. Micheál Martin announced yesterday that Ireland would not buy any military equipment from Israel or vice versa in view of the ruling of the International Court of Justice about the persecution of the Palestinians by the Israelis. D'fhógair Micheál Martin inné nach gceannódh Éire aon trealamh míleata ó Iosrael ná a mhalairt feasta i bhfianaise rialú na Cúirte Breithiúnais Idirnáisiúnta faoin ngéarleanúint atá na hIosraelaigh a dhéanamh ar Phalaistíngh. Last month, that court ruled that Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories is against international law. An mhí seo caite, rialaigh an chúirt sin go bhfuil an greim atá ag Iosrael ar na críocha Palaistíneacha in aghaidh an dlí idirnáisiúnta. Independent MP Cathal Berry - a highly qualified ex-soldier - said Ireland had bought very little military equipment from Israel in 20 years. Dúirt an Teachta Dála Neamhspleách Cathal Berry – iarshaighdiúir ardcháilíochta – gur fíorbheagán trealaimh mhíleata a cheannaigh Éire ó Iosrael le 20 bliain. According to him, helmets, respirators and ammunition were once the most purchased items, while drones and optical material have recently been purchased the most. Dar leis gur clogaid, análaitheoirí agus armlón is mó a cheannaítí tráth, agus gur dróin agus ábhar optaice is mó a ceannaíodh le gairid. Cathal Berry pointed out that Ireland currently has around a dozen Israeli-made drones. Thug Cathal Berry le fios go bhfuil thart ar dhosaen drón de dhéantús Iosrael ag Éirinn faoi láthair. Musik: Adi Zukanovic.

In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Xochitl and Jack share their top five favorite music albums.Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:13JackWelcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and I'm with my co-host social today and we are going to do top five desert Island questions. And so today's question is social. What are your top five?00:00:31JackDesert island.00:00:33JackAlbums, music albums.00:00:38XochitlUh, my God. I mean, this one's a little bit hard, but I'm gonna have to say Shakira, MTV Unplugged.00:00:48JackInteresting. I have two MTV on plugs in.00:00:48XochitlShakira yeah.00:00:52JackMy top five.00:00:55JackYeah. Interesting. OK.00:00:57XochitlYeah, I definitely say Shakira's MTV unplugged album Shakira, volume one.00:01:04JackSo that's your second choice.00:01:06XochitlThat's my second choice, yes.00:01:07JackOK, so two Shakira albums.00:01:08JackWow, you're OK. I didn't know you were that.00:01:09XochitlShe can't albums.00:01:10XochitlShe's yes, I love Shakira. Especially OG. Shakira is just sublime amazingness, musas by Natalia Lafourcade.00:01:11JackBig of a Shakira fan.00:01:14JackOK.00:01:24JackOK.00:01:25JackI have no idea what you just said, but I'm I'm going to say, OK.00:01:25발표자UM.00:01:28XochitlMoses is like, muses, kind of, and that's what it means translates to Natalia Lafourcade is a Mexican singer-songwriter, and the Musas album is based also boleros, which is a traditional like Mexican genre of old style like 50s music.00:01:46JackOhh I can almost kind of picture it in my mind, you know.00:01:51발표자Yeah you can.00:01:52XochitlGet like the vibes a little bit.00:01:54XochitlAnd so she wrote these songs.00:01:56XochitlInspired by that time period.00:01:58XochitlAnd invited a lot of artists from that time period onto the album as features, and it's an absolutely beautiful album. I definitely recommend it. So that knocks out three.00:02:06JackOK, cool.00:02:11XochitlAnd then, OK, this one I think.00:02:18XochitlI gotta Google.00:02:19XochitlIt to make sure it's the right one.00:02:24XochitlOh great, I remember what it is, Jesse. Enjoy, which are another Mexican singer-songwriter group, and their album is Gunjin sequel Pero, which means who should the dog stay with? Because it's like a breakup album.00:02:40XochitlAnd it's a.00:02:41JackWho gets the dog? OK. Yeah, that's sad. Yeah.00:02:43XochitlYes. Who gets the dog? So it's a great album because it was iconic.00:02:54XochitlIn the time period that it was that it came out for and.00:02:58JackSo what was the time period when? What are?00:03:00XochitlIt came out in like the 20 tens, I believe.00:03:00JackWe talking here?00:03:03JackOhh. OK OK. This is not like I.00:03:05JackThought you were like 1970s or 80s, OK?00:03:05XochitlNo it.00:03:07XochitlNo, no, it was just iconic for the 20 tens because it was like a shift in.00:03:12XochitlThe genre they're they're genre sort of Mexican music was like a very indie style. That was kind of unheard of at the time. So I think that's.00:03:22XochitlLike a big shift.00:03:23XochitlAnd fifth one.00:03:30XochitlUh, my God, I'm battling here.00:03:33JackI know the fifth one is always the hardest one because it's like you're excluding 100 other ones that you love, you know.00:03:42XochitlThat's the hard part about it.00:03:48XochitlI think.00:03:51Xochitl80 Gourmet and trio Los Panchos so 80 gourmet. I guess her her English name is 80 Gorm. She's a she's an English speaking singer. I believe she's from the US and she made a an A Spanish album. Spanish speaking album with trio.00:04:10XochitlSponges, which is like a.00:04:11XochitlMariachi group.00:04:12XochitlAnd she did a bunch of classics like Salami and Bill Canela and like.00:04:18XochitlAll these boleros bolero.00:04:19XochitlWhich is a genre I was talking about.00:04:21XochitlEarlier, she did a bunch of these songs in this genre with this group, Joe punches and I.00:04:29XochitlIt's beautiful, absolutely beautiful album.00:04:33XochitlYeah. So I'm going to have to go. Yeah. That was like from the 50s. Probably. Yeah.00:04:34발표자OK.00:04:38JackYeah. And we can get a a good feeling here for your musical. I think musical taste like you. Definitely. Yeah. Well, it was female, you know, like, like, Latino. Sorry. Latina kind of singers. Yeah.00:04:45XochitlYeah, it's all women like.00:04:57JackBut it's it's very popular right now too. So very, very beautiful.00:05:04JackAlright, so it's my.00:05:05XochitlTurn now. Yes, it's your turn.00:05:07JackOK. All right. We're going to go old school here 9. We're going to go all the way.00:05:11JackBack to 1994 Nirvana.00:05:16JackMTV plug.00:05:16XochitlOhh my. That was gonna be that was it was.00:05:19XochitlHard cause I left that one.00:05:20XochitlOff of mine.00:05:21XochitlBut it was hard to leave it.00:05:23XochitlOff, yeah.00:05:23JackOh, I love that album and I can, you know, it's like, these are all albums that on my list that I can listen to all the.00:05:32JackWay through from front to back.00:05:34JackLike I don't skip one song on the on the album, which is weird because I usually used to buy albums and then I would listen to one or two tracks. You know the the title tracks or the title track and then maybe at the singles and I would never listen to the kind of the the other songs on the album.00:05:54JackBut I love all of the songs on this album, so MTV 1994, I believe, Nirvana, MTV Unplugged, #2.00:06:06JackIs Alice In Chains MTV Unplugged, which is? And if, if our listeners don't know Alice In Chains, was a kind of heavy metal grunge rock band from Seattle in the early 1990s.00:06:26JackAnd the unfortunately, the lead singer, Lane Staley, died of a drug overdose. Quite.00:06:34JackA few years ago.00:06:36XochitlRight on.00:06:37JackYeah, it was really terrible. He suffered a a bad drug addiction, like so many artists do. And so yeah, but that they did an MTV unplugged session that had all such great kind of acoustic versions of their.00:06:56JackAmazing songs. So I love that album #3 is Weezer is a band and they have their very first album. Was this blue album. It's like a blue. It's almost like solid blue.00:07:14JackCD OK like the it's just a solid blue color and it says Weezer or something and that whole album I can listen to all the way through and I I love that album. It's just a a brilliant, brilliant album.00:07:35JackDo you know Weezer? Do you ever listen to Weezer?00:07:39발표자There's still.00:07:41XochitlI think I I I've I've heard of them, but I don't. I couldn't say. Oh, I know that song or something, but I think I'm sure that if you played a song of them, I would probably recognize it.00:07:44JackOK, OK.00:07:51JackYeah, I think maybe our only crossover here in this Venn diagram between the two of us is Nirvana. I think it's it's probably, but.00:08:00XochitlYeah, that album specifically.00:08:02JackYeah, #4, my fourth album is a kind of a weird choice, like a lot of people wouldn't wouldn't understand this choice, but.00:08:13JackIt's a. It's a. It's a single guy. Who? It. It sounds like a band, but it's actually just one guy and it's he's called badly drawn boy. And he did a soundtrack for the movie about a boy, which came out about 1819 years ago.00:08:35JackIt's based on a A, a novel, and the movie is fantastic. I love it about a boy, but the the songs that he wrote for that album I can listen to that album all the way through. I just love it and I just think it's amazing. So I.00:08:54JackThat's my number four album. Is the soundtrack to the movie about a boy by the artist, badly drawn boy.00:09:04JackAnd #5, I'm going to go, Bob Dylan, blonde on blonde, and that's probably his most famous album. It's got all the hits in there, but I can listen to that album over. I could listen to it multiple times in a row, just on a road trip. I'll hit play.00:09:24JackListen to the whole album. Go back to the beginning, listen to it again and find new things in there that are more interesting.00:09:31JackUh. And so I I really, really love that album. So Bob Dylan blonde on blonde and I miss you.00:09:40JackKnow I didn't put any Beatles in there.00:09:41XochitlBob Dylan is another one. My dad listened to as well. So.00:09:45JackYeah, I'm. I'm sure your dad.00:09:45XochitlI am familiar.00:09:46JackAnd I probably have more more musical.00:09:48XochitlYeah, I mean, I was introduced.00:09:49JackTaste or something? Yeah.00:09:51XochitlTo Nirvana by my dad and then Bob Dylan. Also, my dad listened to a lot. So.00:09:59XochitlI'm familiar with Bob Dylan.00:10:00JackOhh. Your dad listened to Nirvana as well.00:10:03XochitlYeah, my dad also did listen to Nirvana.00:10:05JackWow, OK, you dance cool. My dad listened to The Beach Boys and The Beatles.00:10:12JackYou know that kind of that era? So he's my dad's a bit older than your dad though, so.00:10:17XochitlYeah, your dad's my dad's.00:10:20XochitlYeah, my dad's, like, between your dad and your age, right, I guess.00:10:25JackYeah, he's like one generation. Well, he's like an old.00:10:28JackGen. Xer right?00:10:30XochitlYeah, he's like a really old Gen. Xer or like a.00:10:33XochitlReally young boomer.00:10:35JackRight, right. My dad's a straight up boomer all the way, yeah.00:10:42XochitlYeah. All right, listeners. Well, I am actually really interested to hear what your five favorite albums are, because I'm. I'm curious. I want to hear all these international music, because our listeners must have a lot. And I also want to know if you have any favorite English language albums. I think that would be really neat to know.00:11:04XochitlAnd do you find that English or that music is a way?00:11:09XochitlThat you can learn English, so that helps you learn English.

In this episode, Shawn discusses Gorm "The Old", who is considered the first historically recognized King of Denmark. A kingdom which still exists today with Queen Margrethe II as its Head of State. Though the main points of his life are still fuzzy at best, Gorm does appear in later writings; however, we are confident of his historical existence in part to the 2 Jelling Runestone's, one of which was commissioned by Gorm himself for his wife, Thyra, and the other commissioned by Gorm's son Harald "Bluetooth" who built one in honor of both his mother and father. Of course, Shawn also discusses his "family ancestry" all the way to Odin along with some of his descendants who would conquer England for a time and form what is now considered the "North Sea Empire" (England, Norway, and Denmark). Bluetooth The King Ragnar Lodbrok was a legendary Norse king, conquering parts of Denmark and Sweden. And if we're to believe the songs, he led some of the best raids against the Franks and the the loose patchwork of nations Charlemagne put together called the Holy Roman Empire. We use the term legendary as the stories of Ragnar were passed down orally and don't necessarily reconcile with other written events. In other words, it's likely that the man in the songs sung by the bards of old are likely in fact a composite of deeds from many a different hero of the norse. Ragnar supposedly died in a pit of snakes at the hands of the Northumbrian king and his six sons formed a Great Heathen Army to avenge their father. His sons ravaged modern England int he wake of their fathers death before becoming leaders of various lands they either inherited or conquered. One of those sons, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, returned home to rule his lands and had children, including Harthacnut. He in turn had a son named Gorm. Gorm the Old was a Danish king who lived to be nearly 60 in a time when life expectancy for most was about half that. Gorm raised a Jelling stone in honor of his wife Thyra. As did his son, in the honor of his wife. That stone is carved with runes that say: “King Haraldr ordered this monument made in memory of Gormr, his father, and in memory of Thyrvé, his mother; that Haraldr who won for himself all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian.” That stone was erected by a Danish king named Herald Gormsson. He converted to Christianity as part of a treaty with the Holy Roman Emperor of the day. He united the tribes of Denmark into a kingdom. One that would go on to expand the reach and reign of the line. Just as Bluetooth would unite devices. Even the logo is a combination of runes that make up his initials HB. Once united, their descendants would go on to rule Denmark, Norway, and England. For a time. Just as Bluetooth would go on to be an important wireless protocol. For a time. Personal Area Networks Many early devices shipped with infrared so people could use a mouse or keyboard. But those never seemed to work so great. And computers with a mouse and keyboard and drawing pad and camera and Zip drive and everything else meant that not only did devices have to be connected to sync but they also had to pull a lot of power and create an even bigger mess on our desks. What the world needed instead was an inexpensive chip that could communicate wirelessly and not pull a massive amount of power since some would be in constant communication. And if we needed a power cord then might as well just use USB or those RS-232 interfaces (serial ports) that were initially developed in 1960 - that were slow and cumbersome. And we could call this a Personal Area Network, or PAN. The Palm Pilot was popular, but docking and pluging in that serial port was not exactly optimal. Yet every ATX motherboard had a port or two. So a Bluetooth Special Interest Group was formed to conceive and manage the standard in 1988 and while initially had half a dozen companies now has over 30,000. The initial development started in the late 1990s with Ericcson. It would use short-range UHF radio waves in the 2.402 GHz and 2.48 GHz bands to exchange data with computers and cell phones, which were evolving into mobile devices at the time. The technology was initially showcased at COMDEX in 1999. Within a couple of years there were phones that could sync, kits for cars, headsets, and chips that could be put into devices - or cards or USB adapters, to get a device to sync 721 Kbps. We could add 2 to 8 Bluetooth secondary devices that paired to our primary. They then frequency hopped using their Bluetooth device address provided by the primary, which sends a radio signal to secondaries with a range of addresses to use. The secondaries then respond with the frequency and clock state. And unlike a lot of other wireless technologies, it just kinda' worked. And life seemed good. Bluetooth went to the IEEE, which had assigned networking the 802 standard with Ethernet being 802.3 and Wi-Fi being 802.11. So Personal Area Networks became 802.15, with Bluetooth 1.1 becoming 802.15.1. And the first phone shipped in 2001, the Sony Ericsson T39. Bluetooth 2 came in 2005 and gave us 2.1 Mbps speeds and increased the range from 10 to 30 meters. By then, over 5 million devices were shipping every week. More devices mean we have a larger attack surface space. And security researchers were certainly knocking at the door. Bluetooth 2.1 added secure simple pairing. Then Bluetooth 3 in 2009 bringing those speeds up to 24 Mbps and once connected allowing Wi-Fi to pick up connections once established. But we were trading speed for energy and this wasn't really the direction Bluetooth needed to go. Even if a billion devices had shipped by the end of 2006. Bluetooth 4 The mobility era was upon us and it was increasingly important, not just for the ARM chips, but also for the rest of the increasing number of devices, to use less power. Bluetooth 4 came along in 2010 and was slower at 1 Mbps, but used less energy. This is when the iPhone 4S line fully embraced the technology, helping make it a standard. While not directly responsible for the fitness tracker craze, it certainly paved the way for a small coin cell battery to run these types of devices for long periods of time. And it allowed for connecting devices 100 meters, or well over 300 feet away. So leave the laptop in one room and those headphones should be fine in the next. And while we're at it, maybe we want those headphones to work on two different devices. This is where Multipoint comes into play. That's the feature of Bluetooth 4 that allows those devices to pass seamlessly between the phone and the laptop, maintaining a connection to each. Apple calls their implementation of this feature Handoff. Bluetooth 5 came in 2016, allowing for connections up to 240 meters, or around 800 feet. Well, according to what's between us and our devices, as with other protocols. We also got up to 2 Mbps, which dropped as we moved further away from devices. Thus we might get buffering issues or slower transfers with weaker connections. But not outright dropping the connection. Bluetooth Evolves Bluetooth was in large part developed to allow our phones to sync to our computers. Most don't do that any more. And the developers wanted to pave the way for wireless headsets. But it also allowed us to get smart scales, smart bulbs, wearables like smart watches and glasses, Bluetooth printers, webcams, keyboards, mice, GPS devices, thermostats, and even a little device that tells me when I need to water the plants. Many home automation devices, or IoT as we seem to call them these days began as Bluetooth but given that we want them to work when we take all our mostly mobile computing devices out of the home, many of those have moved over to Wi-Fi these days. Bluetooth was initially conceived as a replacement for the serial port. Higher throughput needs moved to USB and USB-C. Lower throughput has largely moved to Bluetooth, with the protocol split between Low Energy and higher bandwidth application which with high definition audio now includes headphones. Once the higher throughput needs went to parallel and SCSI but now there are so many other options. And the line is blurred between what goes where. Billions of routers and switches have been sold, billions of wireless access points. Systems on a Chip now include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth together on the same chip. The programming languages for native apps have also given us frameworks and APIs where we can establish a connection over 5G, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth, and then hand them off where the needs diverge. Seamless to those who use our software and elegant when done right. Today over four billion bluetooth devices ship per year, growing at about 10 percent a year. The original needs that various aspects of Bluetooth was designed for have moved to other protocols and the future of the Personal Area Network may be at least in part moved to Wi-Fi or 5G. But for now it's a standard that has aged well and continues to make life easier for those who use it.

Welcome back to The Procuretech Podcast! We're continuing with our mini series where we ask influencers and industry experts for their thoughts and nuggets of advice on everything that's happening in the digital procurement world. Today we're talking about E-Auctions and E-Sourcing. Depending on how the technology's been deployed, some people might be sceptical about this topic. But our guest today literally wrote the book on E-Sourcing, and he's here to explain the upsides. Let's welcome to the podcast Jacob Gorm Larson, of Moneyball CPH. Success with E-Auctions - Jacob Gorm Larsen from Moneyball CPH We're going to talk about current trends in E-sourcing from a platform agnostic viewpoint. We might all have our favourite - or least favourite - platforms, but we won't be going into specifics here. Instead we'll be sharing all the tips, tactics, and observations Jacob has learned during his long career in this space. We began our chat with a brief rundown of Jacob's history… Jacob Gorm Larson – A career in E-sourcing Jacob's been in the procurement space for around 20 years. He spent most of that time with Maersk, the global shipping company. Maersk used to be a conglomerate, so they would operate in oil, gas, offshore logistics and a couple of other industries. Jacob introduced E-sourcing across all these different industries, and in doing so, learned that it's not an industry or category specific thing. It can be applied in any industry with the right knowledge. But E-sourcing can be a divisive topic within procurement, because people don't fully understand the technology. That's why Jacob wrote his book, so he could share the kind of knowledge he wished he had access to at the start of his journey. The book sparked some interest, and a year later Jacob found himself moving to an advisory role. He now supports companies in their procurement transformation process. How did the rise of technology impact Jacob's career at Maersk, and how did this improve results at auction? Jacob says he had a fantastic ride with E-sourcing. He came into his role at Maersk in 2007/8, so there was a huge degree of uncertainty, being right on the brink of the financial crisis. This had a lot of companies in dire straits and facing a lot of challenges. There was a desperate need for securing cost savings. In many ways there are a lot of similarities to the situation right now, with record level inflation across the world and a potential recession coming in. It could well be that within the next six months, we see another huge drive for technologies that can help companies take out costs, and bring down the overall cost base. And that was exactly what Jacob used E-sourcing for back then, too. It was there when companies needed it the most. And so Jacob got support from all the way up the company to introduce it, to push it. promote it and drive it quite hard across all areas of the company. He realised during that time that E-sourcing is in the DNA of procurement as a function: There's a constant need to own the cost agenda. And one very efficient way of doing that is to apply E-sourcing and E-auctions, He also added a lot of sourcing optimization capabilities later on, creating a full toolbox to digitally tackle the market and ensure they were always cost competitive within Maerks's various markets. The five pillars of successful E-sourcing Jacob's book breaks things down into five pillars required for a successful E-sourcing strategy. These are: Definition Strategy Bidder engagement Adoption and change management The future of E-auctions A lot of people think E-auctions are the same as reverse auctions. But they're not the same thing. Jacob defines an E-auction as any auction in an online, market-driven negotiation, based on total value with commitment. That definition is absolutely key for...

The Go Programming Language Go is an open-source programming language with influences from Limbo, C, APL, Modular, Oberon, Pascal, Alex, Erlang, and most importantly, C. While relatively young compared to many languages, there are over 365,000 repositories of Go projects on Github alone. There are a few reason it gained popularity so quickly: it's fast and efficient in the right hands, simple to pick up, doesn't have some of the baggage of some more mature languages, and the name Ken Thompson. The seamless way we can make calls from Go into C and the fact that Ken Thompson was one of the parties responsible for C, makes it seem in part like a modern web enabled language that can stretch between the tasks C is still used for all the way to playing fart sounds in an app. And it didn't hurt that co-author Rob Pike had whelped write books, co-created UTF-8, and was part of the distributed operating system Plan 9 team at Bell Labs and had worked on the Limbo programming language there. And Robert Griesemer was another co-author. He'd begun his career studying under Niklaus Wirth, the greater of Pascal, Modula, and Oberon. So it's no surprise that he'd go on to write compilers and design languages. Before go, he'd worked on the V8 JavaScript engine at Google and a compiler for the Java HotSpot Virtual Machine. So our intrepid heroes assembled (pun intended) at Google in 2009. But why? Friends don't let friends write in C. Thompson had done something amazing for the world with C. But that was going on 50 years ago. And others had picked up the mantle with C++. But there were shortcomings the team wanted to address. And so Go has the ability to concatenate string variables without using a preprocessor, has many similarities to languages like BASIC from the Limbo influences, but the most impressive feature about this programming language is its support for concurrent execution. And probably the best garbage collection facility I've ever seen. The first version of the language wasn't released to the public and wouldn't be for a few years. The initial compiler was written in C but over time they got to where it can be self-hosted, which is to say that Go is compiled in Go. Go is a compiled language that can run on a command line, in a browser, on the server, or even be used to compile itself. Go compiles fast and has no global variables to clutter memory. This simplicity makes it easy to read through Go code line by line without consulting any parsing tools or syntax charts. Let's look at a quick Hello World: // A basic Go program that demonstrates "Hello World!" package main import "fmt" func main() { fmt.Println("Hello World!") } The output would be a simple Hello World! Fairly straight forward but the power gets into more of the scripting structures - especially given that a micro service is just a lot of little functional scripts. The language itself has no connection to any other functional programming languages and does not include support for object orientation or reflection. The language consists of two parts: a parser (which processes an input file) and a bytecode interpreter, which translates all source code into machine code. Consequently, Go programs tend to compile quickly and run very efficiently because they are mainly independent of the runtime environment and can execute directly on the hardware without being interpreted by some sort of virtual machine first. Additionally, there is no need for a separate interpreter during execution since everything runs natively. The libraries and sources built using the Go programming language provide developers with a straightforward, safe, and extensibility system to build on. We have things like Go Kit, GORM, cli, Vegeta, fuzzy, Authboss, Image, Time, gg, and mgo. These can basically provide pre-built functions and APIs to hook into any old type of service or give a number of things for free. Go was well designed from the outset and while it's evolved over the years, it hasn't changed as much as many other languages. with the latest release being Go 1.17. 1.1 came just a couple of months after the initial release to increase how much memory could be used on 64 bit chips by about 10-fold, add detection for race conditions, added the uint for 64 bit integers. Oh and fixed a couple of issues in the compiler. 1.2 also came in 2013 and tweaked how slicing of arrays worked in a really elegant way (almost ruby-like) and allowed developers to call the runtime scheduler for non-inline calls. And added a thread limit, like the ulimit a bash would have, for 10,000 threads. And they doubled the grouting minimum size of the stack. Then the changes got smaller. This happens as every language gets more popular. The more people use it, the more havoc the developers cause when they make breaking changes. Bigger changes are contiguous models of grouting stacks in 1.3, the addition of internal packages in 1.4, a redesigned garbage collector in 1.5 when Go was moved away from C and implemented solely in Go and assembler. And 17 releases later, it's more popular than ever. While C remains the most popular language today, Go is hovering in the top 10. Imagine, one day saying let's build a better language for concurrent programming. And then viola; hundreds of thousands of people are using it.
