Shingles is a common condition in Australia, affecting around one in three people at some point in their lives. Its occurrence is notably higher in individuals over the age of 50, with the risk of complications increasing with age. Therefore, if you are over 50, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Dr Ali Ziabari explains shingles symptoms and the vaccines available for this condition. Every week, impassioned Australians take to the streets, raising their voices in protest on important issues. When Te Rauparaha, and his hapū leave the overpopulated Kawhia harbour for Te Upoko o te Ika, the head of the fish, there are challenges in making the journey to new lands. It isn't just his warriors, but women, children and elders who are travelling in the heke. Te Rauparaha and his people make alliances along the way, but also mortal enemies, which will have tragic consequences for Te Rauparaha personally.
This week I am joined by Dr Ihirangi (Ihi) HekeIhi is an honorary research fellow to the University of Auckland and has been working with Johns Hopkins University to conduct a study using traditional indigenous health approaches alongside Systems Dynamics. Ihi is also working with Washington University in the development of training programmes exchanging Systems Dynamics from indigenous and non-indigenous perspectives.Over the past 10 years he has been active in helping Māori and other indigenous groups abroad, build their own health and wellness activities based on their own traditional knowledge. His Atua-Matua Framework has been a work in progress and is attracting national and international attention from health and education policy makers and providers who are struggling to apply standard western deficit models to global health initiatives and are looking to more localised indigenous models of engagement to deal with global health issues. ONCE WERE WARRIORS (1994) is Lee Tamahori's adaptation of the first instalment of a powerful drama exploring the lives of the Māori Heke family. An unflinching and often brutal depiction of the effects of alcoholism, domestic violence and extreme poverty, Temuera Morrisson garnered critical acclaim and went on to become an international star but he is ably supported by Rena Owen, Cliff Curtis and especially Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell who delivers a moving performance as tragic eldest daughter Grace, in what turns out to have been her only big screen appearance. Morrisson of course went on to feature as a Fett - two in fact, as Peter reminds me - whereas Director Tamahori went on to direct the preposterous Nicolas Cage thriller NEXT, reviewed on this pod and much loved by all. It never used to be that way though. Franko lived in depression, alcoholism, and confusion at many moments in his life. This episode is a special one. Our guest is Dr Ihirangi Heke. Ihi is a keen cyclist as you'll hear. He's also a really smart guy, with several degrees to his name. His main area of interest is in using the outdoors, including cycling and other activities, and traditional maori knowledge, as a medium to improve health and wellbeing, particularly of Maori, and other indigenous peoples. Ihi has an approach that is different to conventional health practices, and one that he believes has relevance for everyone. Ihi loves bikepacking, and is about to start on the Kopiko Aotearoa. His approach to bikepacking is also refreshingly different to how most people do it.https://sportnz.org.nz/resources/tapuwaekura/https://100maorileaders.com/dr-ihirangi-heke

A brain-damaged man who died of suspected suicide while in a secure mental health unit should not have been there, and was being treated in a way that did not help his condition, according to a report into his death. Tamaki Heke, 24, was found dead in the Waitemata DHB's He Puna Waiora unit in May 2019. His death came one week after another suspected suicide there. Heke had previously been diagnosed with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder. He had the intellectual age of between eight and 12 years old, and was consequently prone to copycat behaviour. Heke also suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit disorder and intermittent psychosis. He had been admitted to the acute mental health unit 11 times because of suicidal thoughts and self-harm. His final stay was five months. On the night of his death, Tamaki Heke's foster parents warned He Puna Waiora he was suicidal and asked for him to be watched closely, because of his copycat behaviour.
Today I interview Franko Heke on creating awareness of the social conditioning around what you “should” be like growing up as a male in the western world, specifically Kiwi culture & society and how that contributes to New Zealand having one of the highest rates of male suicide in the world. We cover so many things in this episode such as; how to help and support having a friend or loved one that is suicidal, advice on what you can do yourself to help get you out of your depression, how men can seek for emotional help, early warning signs of depression in kids, advice for parents raising kids in the western world, specifically male teens around kiwi culture, and Franko shares his message to anyone listening to this episode who is having a hard time battling with mental health themselves. You can check out his work at www.frankoheke.com and his festivals with his partner Nikki at www.nzspirit.com or contact him through Instagram: @frankoheke

Katy Bowman and Dr. Ihi Heke talk about movement and indigenous approaches to health, including Heke's Maori framework--that our relationship with where we’re born and where we live has implications for our health. This wide-ranging and fascinating conversation also explores non-person-centric approaches to health, and the idea that exercise depends on a cultural context. Dr. Heke explains what it means to be a river person, and how that has shaped how he lives. Author Tricia Kelly, born in New Zealand, has lived in the USA for over 40 years and raised one daughter. With over forty years of spiritual, metaphysical and personal experiences, Tricia entwines this information within all her novels in a playful, colorful way that keeps the audience’s attention. Her newest book, Her Love Story: Synchronicities, Spirituality and Mr. Henley is Tricia's memoir of a love affair she had with Mr. Don Henley of The Eagles. The pieces in her life started to fall into place around this man, and he naturally became this huge catalyst in her life and she followed her hunches, and her heart. Her earlier books include The Starseeds: Beyond Time, Spirit Boy: An Earth Spy, Daphne Goes Blue (Child’s picture book) and New Energy Parenting. Tricia novels are highly endorsed and are available on Amazon and other online stores. She is also an experienced songwriter with numerous credits, and a member of ASCAP, along with her IMDB credit as a screenwriter for Hugh and Heke. Tricia is currently working on a new screenplay based on Her Love Story, but more from the soul’s point of view and journey to reconnect, and often throughout time we create these repetitive patterns with the same souls. Namaste! And welcome to episode 26 of DOUGIT the podcast with Franko Heke. Tune into some whispers and wisdom from Franko as well as a sample of his new mantra album "ENCHANT" from his band The Gaya Tree. It's a beautiful album of Ancient & New Mantra using Maori, Hindi, Sanskrit and English done with a futuristic twist. Let music be thy medicine and gather yourself a copy on iTunes or listen on Spotify. Franko's had a fascinating life from the drug, sex, rock n' roll and depression days to playing mantra music, having a child, training to teach yoga and playing at festivals around the world, on stage with the likes of Xzavier Rudd and playing to 3+ million people at the World Culture Festival in India. I even discovered he had a song, We Are One, that went viral supporting the All Blacks in the World Cup which i'm not sure if he will want me sharing but, hah. It's amazing to see how far he's come since then and what joy he now brings to his life and others with his musical gift and openness. It's fascinating to look back on our lives, and to even recognise going forward how we're often only a few millimetres or way decision away from breaking through to an extraordinary life. I think Franko is well on his way there. Hope you DOUG this episode with Franko and check out his album and his concert dates below. And if you feel like giving back share on social, with a friend or leave a review below. Think less, experience more, Yours happily, :Doug

We're pleased to present inspirational author and speaker Tricia Kelly. With over thirty years of spiritual, metaphysical, and personal experiences, Tricia manages to entwine this information within her novels in a playful way that keeps the audience's attention. 'THE STARSEEDS; Beyond Time' came from beyond as Tricia learned to trust her own visitors and information that she received as a channel novel. 'NEW ENERGY PARENTING' is Tricia's non-fiction book on how she raised her child without the need to punish her for her learning experiences and failures. It is all about being a conscious parent during these elevated times and following the Law Of Attraction principles. 'SPIRIT BOY: An Earth Spy' and 'DAPHNE GOES BLUE', are two highly endorsed novels too. Tricia is also a songwriter with numerous writing credits, and has an IMDB credited screenwriter for her first film, 'Hugh and Heke.' She was born in New Zealand, and resides in USA with her teenage daughter.
