As slaves, they were tortured and raped repeatedly by their white masters to produce children for slave labor. Their labor built America and made thousands of white Americans, as well as our entire country wealthy. When they were finally emancipated, they were freed, but not free. Not only were they never compensated for the theft of their labor, dignity, or lives, but federal, State, and local governments, under color of law, intentionally reinforced old and created new structures to subjugate them. And you respond, "because I am lucky." And to me, this is the essence of not only what I took away from Real American, it is what I think all parents of black children need to teach their children, that they are actually more than lucky. Because despite centuries of, to quote you, "the systemic dismemberment of black agency, the debasement of black men, the rape of black woman, the destruction of the black family, the ringing of energy and life out of our black forebears, despite all of that, these children are here. And what that means is that black people endured. And in that endurance is unparalleled strength, intelligence and a power that we ourselves are just beginning to understand.  So black children have nothing to be ashamed of. They don't have anything to loathe in themselves. They are not the ones with something to be ashamed of. Angela Zeigerbacher has always been interested in the personal finance realm, from hoarding cash in her sock drawer as a kid to paying off her student loan debt in one year after college. After countless conversations with friends, she realized not everyone had the same level of personal finance education, which prompted her to launch the Money in the Bank podcast, a personal finance podcast for the average Joe or Jane. On top of this, Angela has taught personal finance to teenagers in high school as well as hosted “lunch and learn” at several companies. She recently started a food channel on YouTube, Foogality, where she cooks and bakes frugal type of meals.   “Things can always break when you buy a house. So going in without a maintenance fund is a really bad idea.” Angela Zeigerbacher   Worst investment ever Young, debt-free and proud Angela finished paying off her student loan in just a year after college. She was on top of the world. At 22 and having paid off her student loan debt that fast, she felt she was doing a lot of things right. So what's next? Interestingly, nobody talks about what you should do once you pay off your debt, especially to young people. So after working so hard to pay off her debt, she didn’t know what to do now that she was debt-free. All her friends advised her to treat herself, go on nice vacations, and buy things she wanted. Angela had never really been a spendthrift. So she didn't take the advice completely to heart, but she started thinking about it. Desire to live the American dream Everyone kept telling her to buy a house, so she figured the American dream sounded good. It would be nice to have a house and have a boyfriend, two cars in the garage, and a white picket fence. Her American dream started with a new car. She didn’t put much thought behind it. She just went to the dealership and picked a car that she thought was good for her; a brand new Ford Escape for $35,000. Let’s buy a home Next on her American dream list was a house. After buying the car, her lease came up for renewal. At the time, she was living with her boyfriend and they decided that renting was just throwing away money, especially now that the lease was going to increase by $250 a month. So they decided that buying a house was the right thing to do. Again no thought was given to this decision as she was just too excited to get something she wanted and could afford. Oh, damn the closing costs! Even though they went for a house, they could easily pay for, one huge factor, prompted by the hasty decision making, was ignored. They never factored in the closing costs which was about 3% of the buying price. Now they were draining their emergency funds and savings accounts scraping this money together to fulfill their dream of buying a home. Now we hate the house The couple bought a house that they could afford, but they didn't spend enough time looking and ended up just quick buying the first house they saw. After living there for just a year, they hated it. There was no insulation in the bedroom, so it was freezing in the winter. Their bills were super high. They went from paying about $50 a month in an apartment for heating and cooling to about $200 a month. Don’t forget the taxes Another thing that they forgot to factor in was property taxes, and they can be quite expensive. They were paying about $350 a month in property taxes, as well as a Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) of about $100 per month as well. In hindsight, even though Angela thought renting was throwing all this money out the window, they could have rented a two-bedroom, which would have been more than enough for their needs at the time, for probably about $875 a month. Poor investment choice Buying a house ended up being Angela’s worst investment ever. Even though she made about $19,000 worth of principal, it still cost her in total $30,000 because closing costs on both ends were high. She also had to sell her car as she had moved closer to work. Cumulatively, her American dream cost her about $50,000. Lessons learned Ignore what society thinks Never listen to what others or society think that your life should look like. Having that car and having that house makes you look very successful when you're 22 years old. But ultimately, from an investment perspective, that isn’t what’s best for you. You are better off using that money to invest in other things that have a return on investment. Buying a house is not necessarily a good investment When it comes to buying rental property versus buying a home, one is an investment, and one is not. Most first time homebuyers tend to think that buying a home is an investment but it's not. Some people have had major luck with the buy and hold model on their homes, but that is like winning the lottery. Think of your house as a home, your place to live in. A house has no liquidity like a savings account. That's why you accept a lower return on a savings account as your money is very liquid, you can get your hands on it if you need to, but you can't with home equity. Andrew’s takeaways Always do your research Before you put the down payment on a house, do your research. Find a comparable house that's for sale, and try to compare the two. By doing so, you force yourself to ask all the questions necessary to make the right decision. Your parents know all about buying a house, hear them out Listen to your parents when it comes to buying a house. They’re likely to know all the expenses and all the trouble that comes with the purchase. Keeping up with the Joneses You don’t need to chase the American dream just because everyone else is doing so. Don’t follow other people’s dreams. Just because others are doing something, it doesn’t mean they are making the right decisions. Be brave, be willing to stand on your own. Actionable advice Don’t rush big financial decisions. Take your time, think about it, do your research, do your homework, and make sure you’re excited about what you’re doing. Ask for more opinions from people around you. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Angela’s goal for the next 12 months is to focus on her YouTube channel and pick up some more editing skills, so her videos get better. She also wants to work on releasing a frugally minded cookbook and the next year. Parting words   “Don’t let sunk cost fallacy keep you in a bad situation. If ever someone had a sense of hiraeth, I think it would be today's guest, Kristina, whose homeland doesn't quite exist anymore. Kristina was born in Yugoslavia but spent her early years in America. At ten years old, her family decided to return to Yugoslavia, only to be forced out as refugees eight years later. While they never thought the war would come to their town, the rise of conflicting nationalist parties eventually did push them out of their home. During this war, families were torn apart; forced to take sides or risk becoming prisoners. Kristina says all of her friends eventually left the country. Kristina also has the unique perspective of being on opposite sides of migration- both as a refugee and as an expatriate. She has lived in America, France, and the Netherlands. She says she also married the son of an immigrant. Her (American) husband's mom is from Sweden, and he’s floated around quite a bit among Germany, the Netherlands, USA, and France. The Camargue and Gard are magical places. Today Claire tells us about three French departments that she knows well: the Bouches-du-Rhône (13), the Gard (30), and the Hérault (34), which are neatly tucked between Provence and the Southwest, and are off the beaten track as far as French tourists are concerned. Claire is French-American, she was born in Nîmes to a French father and an American mother. Her family moved to the US when she was a few years old, but her first language was French. Growing up in the US, she lost most of her French, but she spent her Junior year of High School in France and it all came back. TRANSCRIPT Church Militant (a 501(c)4 corporation) is responsible for the content of this commentary. The world of politics is the arena in which the culture and the Church are now colliding head-on in a war for the ages. It's taken a man like Trump to actually set the stage for this epic battle, to set the table for everything to come together. For example, in a stunning admission this past weekend, in light of the announcement of Catholic Amy Coney Barrett by Trump to the Supreme Court, New York Times columnist Elizabeth Bruenig just flat out said, "Judge Barrett's nomination has merely renewed attention to a fundamental conflict, centuries underway, between Catholicism and the American ethos." Well, at least Bruenig has the decency to be upfront about her anti-Catholic bigotry. Most of her Marxist-minded allies do not. But more and more of them are beginning to speak of actual Catholics as some sort of pariahs, speaking of us in terms of the enemies of the State. It's not been that long in this country since Catholics were treated as the enemy. It was really only in the wake of World War II where Catholic servicemen fought alongside millions of their non-Catholic American brothers-in-arms that we caught a break. Ten years later, Abp. Fulton Sheen was dominating the airwaves, speaking of Catholic majesty and truth and virtue. His Life Is Worth Living television show was the number-one-rated show when it aired from 1952 till 1956. He even won the Emmy award for "Most Outstanding Television Personality" in the show's first year. Sheen — American born and Catholic formed — was a strident patriot and a zealous anti-communist. He often railed against the evil of Marxism, even famously saying of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin on the air, "Stalin must one day meet his judgment." The next week, Stalin hit the floor, dead from a stroke. America has Marxist creep. Of course, this was all nearly 70 years ago, and a lot has changed in America since then. America has Marxist creep. It has become this way because the American experiment is based on the foundation of a virtuous people. Once virtue leaves the room, chaos sets in. Sheen never had to talk about widespread ills of our society — fatherless children, shattered families, an acceptance of homosexuality, abortion as the most common surgical procedure performed in the country. It was precisely to prevent evils like this that Sheen preached to begin with. Yet here we are, a nation sunk so low that many are questioning, "Is America on life support; is this its demise?" Despite this past weekend's prayer rally organized by Frankin Graham (with a conspicuous absence of Catholic bishops, incidentally) the large gathering of thousands does not mask that America has traded vice for virtue. Little by little, each election cycle, fewer believers vote, ultimately because there are simply fewer believers to vote. The scales are at the tipping point, and soon, barring some action by Heaven, they will complete their tilt toward godlessness, enshrining immorality into law and eviscerating any opposition to that what Bruening calls "the American ethos." What has happened though is that what she describes as the American ethos is little else than a sophisticated way to speak of Marxism. Her American ethos is as far from the actual American ethos as James Martin's version of Catholicism is from actual Catholicism — which is to say light-years away. Anti-Catholicism will soon become etched into that new ethos if the Marxists win this election. In some ways, in fact, it already has. President Trump had to actually come out this past weekend and address the entire topic of anti-Catholicism. Now the last battle is being waged in the arena of politics. A win here for the Marxists means it's over. Time will be all there is standing between faithful Catholics and those who want to destroy them. Consider, almost a hundred Catholic parishes or shrines around the nation have been vandalized this year. Faithful Catholics have been insulted, spit on at pro-life prayer sessions and vilified in the media for defending Catholic teachings. This will not go away if Biden wins. It will increase — it will, in fact, come to be blessed by the State (for how else should an enemy of the State be treated?). The Church had been neatly prepared to be offered up to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. The case could be made — strongly — that 70 years ago, America was on the verge of becoming Catholic. But that was not to happen. Many of the religious orders — even back then — had already been penetrated (as well as Catholic colleges and universities). The seminaries were beginning to stink of subtle heresy. The Church had been neatly prepared to be offered up to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. By that time, enough of the hierarchy had become corrupt — doctrinally, liturgically, financially or sexually, or in some cases, all of the above. A giant structure of the Church in America had been constructed in those first hundred or so years, and it would take a number of generations to dismantle it. But over the decades, dismantle it they did — the enemies of Christ inside the Church we're speaking of. Their champion is Joe Biden; he is the very model of everything the current American ethos is about. And he is the very model at the same time of all that fraudulent Catholicism is about. He is the son of the fraudulent Church of Nice, and those in his entourage would turn around and smash the authentic Church to pieces. Understand, Catholics who actually believe, understand everything that is at stake here.
