First up in Episode 174 is Rugby Union, following England's agonising 24-22 defeat at home to New Zealand, whilst Scotland kicked off their Autumn series with a fantastic 57-17 win over Fiji. In Football, Arsenal's title hopes seemed to take a dent in their loss at Newcastle, until City lost at Bournemouth and Chelsea drew with Manchester United. In the FA Cup, Tony and Andy have nailed their colours to the mast as to which minnows they will start with in following a path from the second round to May's final at Wembley. The Formula 1 in Sao Paolo was a fantastic display of wet weather driving, as Max Verstappen went from 17th on the grid to winning the race- putting him within touching distance of the title with just 3 races left. We also bring you the latest in Cricket, Rugby League, Golf, Tennis and NFL - before we give a Get a Grip to New Zealand's All Blacks (and their fans) over being too sensitive over the Haka and how other teams respond. Our guest slot sees the return of local triathlete Tom Mayor. In January we interviewed Tom as he shared his story of being diagnosed with a brain tumour whilst coaching football in America, and how he intended to run or cycle 10k a day for 10 months to raise awareness and funds for Brain Tumour Research to mark 10 years since his diagnosis. Well 10 months on and Tom rejoins us to update on how the challenge went, and some of the highs and lows that went with it. If anyone wants to donate to this amazing cause, there is still time. We kick off this week by looking back at the European Championships Final and England's defeat by Spain, leading Gareth Southgate to stand down after 8 years in charge. Wee bring you a roundup of the winner from Wimbledon's finals weekend, where Carlos Alcaraz won the Men's, Barbara Krejcikova the Women's and Britain's Alfie Hewitt took both the Men's and Doubles Wheelchair titles. From Rugby Union we have all the latest from the summer tours, meanwhile in Rugby League it was a top of the table derby clash between Wigan and Saint Helens – with Wigan looking to extend their lead at the top and Saints looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat. As athletes fine tune their preparation for the Olympics next week, it was the Monaco Diamond League event-where there was a men's 1500m European record for Jakob Ingebrigtsen whilst Australia's Jess Hill set a new world record in the rarely raced 2000m. Our first guest is Simon Cowlard who returns to share the story of his fundraising walk between the football stadia in London, to raise funds for Myeloma UK. Simon tells us about the efforts of him and his team mates, including unexpected miles, shortbread biscuits and impromptu street football en route to raising thousands of pounds for the charity. We are then joined by triathletes Andrew Harden-Sweetnam and Harriet Hardy who recently completed the Ironman 70.3 Bolton event as a relay team. They share their experiences of the race-but if that wasn't enough, they spent the following weekend participating in a “Backyard Ultra”. This was organised from Andrew's garden in support of previous pod guest Tom Mayor's fundraising efforts for Brain Tumour Research. Andrew and Harriet share how a 12-hour, 60-kilometre event boiled down to a final loop sprint! We also have the usual round up of sports stories that you love, a worthy Get a Grip target and your contacts in another fantastic episode.

GDP Script/ Top Stories for Jan 21st      Publish Date:  Jan 19th        HENSSLER 15 From the Henssler Financial Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Sunday, January 21st and Happy 83rd Birthday to golfer Jack Nicklaus. ***01.21.24 – BIRTHDAY – JACK NICKLAUS*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Kia Mall of Georgia.   Duluth Man Heading To Federal Prison For Trying To Have Girlfriend Murdered Woman claims doctors misdiagnosed brain tumor as perimenopause Steve Knudsen, Karen Watkins Picked To Lead Gwinnett School Board All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Duluth Man Heading To Federal Prison For Trying To Have Girlfriend Murdered James Wan, a Duluth man, has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for attempting to hire a hitman on the dark web to murder his girlfriend in 2022. Wan pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced this week. The FBI intervened, protecting the girlfriend and arresting Wan when they discovered his arrangement. Wan used a dark web marketplace, paying $8,000 in Bitcoin for the hit. Despite attempting to conceal his intentions electronically, Wan's plot was foiled, and he admitted to the crime when questioned by the FBI. The sentencing underscores law enforcement's commitment to thwarting violent acts. STORY 2: Woman claims doctors misdiagnosed brain tumor as perimenopause Pippa Griffiths, 45, initially attributed migraines, brain fog, fatigue, and stress to perimenopause but later discovered a brain tumor was causing the symptoms. After waking up with facial numbness, an MRI scan revealed a meningioma. Pippa underwent surgery to remove the tumor, and though aware it may grow back, she opted against further treatment due to potential side effects. Pippa, now participating in a charity event for Brain Tumour Research, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about brain tumors and hopes for kinder treatments and, ultimately, a cure. STORY 3: Steve Knudsen, Karen Watkins Picked To Lead Gwinnett School Board Steve Knudsen has been appointed as the Gwinnett County Board of Education's chairman for 2024, following his two-year tenure as vice chairman. The appointment was made through a 4-1 vote, with Tarece Johnson-Morgan opposing. Johnson-Morgan nominated Adrienne Simmons for the position, but the nomination lacked a second. Additionally, Karen Watkins was chosen as vice chairwoman in a 3-2 vote, with Morgan and Simmons voting against. The chairman and vice chairwoman play pivotal roles in leading school board meetings and assuming responsibilities in the absence of the other.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back   Break 2: GCPS – TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Willy Wonka-Like Chocolate Factory Opens In Gwinnett Bitzel's Chocolate in Suwanee, Gwinnett County, celebrated its grand opening by offering visitors a unique "Journey of Chocolate." Owner Ray Bitzel aims to provide an immersive experience, showcasing the entire chocolate-making process, from cacao harvesting and fermentation to sorting, molding, and packaging. The main attraction, "The Glass Chocolate Factory," guides guests through an artificial cacao forest, offering educational insights. The 7,000-square-foot facility also features a retail store offering a variety of chocolate products, including treats made from milk chocolate, dark chocolate, caramel chocolate, and the unique ruby chocolate. The space includes a "Chocolate Theater" for events and classes. STORY 5: A New Way To Watch The Gwinnett Stripers The Gwinnett Stripers announced the opening of the Coca-Cola Front Porch area for the 2024 season, marking the first significant renovation at Coolray Field in 15 years. This open-air deck, spanning 1,500 square feet, will be located behind home plate, accommodating up to 150 people. Larimer Design Architecture, known for projects at Truist Park and Petco Park, designed the Coca-Cola Front Porch. The renovation includes the development of a new Concourse Suite down the first base line, offering a more intimate experience. The area will feature eight four-top tables and 72 individual seats, providing fans with up-close views of the game. Food service will be available within the Front Porch area, creating a space for fans to eat and stay during the entire game. The opening game at Coolray Field is scheduled for April 2.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3:  DTL – ESOG   STORY 6: Opponents of sales tax on period products ready to push Georgia lawmakers to end levy A group of advocates and Democrats in Georgia are urging the state to end the 4% sales tax on period products. The Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, which works with member states to smooth out complexities in sales tax systems, adopted the term "menstrual discharge collection devices" to provide a uniform definition for tampons and other period products. Advocates argue that ending the discriminatory tax would not significantly impact state revenues and point to Georgia being one of the few states still taxing such products. Two bills from last year aim to eliminate the tax, but progress has been slow. STORY 7: Gwinnett Teachers Will Get Their State-Funded Retention Supplements Later This Month Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia will distribute $20.3 million to teachers and school support staff as part of a statewide effort to retain educators. The funds come from the state and will be provided as a $1,000 supplement to each of the district's 196,000 educators. The school board also decided to extend the supplements to other employees not covered by the state's guidance, including benefits-eligible district employees, part-time and full-time rehired retirees, and new hires. The additional cost for this extension is estimated at $5 million, and the supplements will be distributed with the employees' January 31 monthly paycheck. BREAK: INGLES 8   STORY 8: Major airline fires back at analyst over bankruptcy claims The airline industry, known for its challenges, faces uncertainties with potential bankruptcies. Warren Buffett's past skepticism resonates, as airlines like JetBlue and Spirit grapple with financial woes. Analysts, including TD Cowen's Helene Becker, express concerns about Spirit Airlines' survival, pointing to its debt and financial constraints. While Spirit denies pursuing Chapter 11, analysts suggest bankruptcy restructuring as a viable option. The airline's future hinges on debtholder cooperation, given its financial vulnerabilities. Fitch Ratings urges a clear liquidity plan. Despite potential disruptions, bankruptcy doesn't guarantee passenger abandonment. Spirit's decision to resist a merger with JetBlue adds complexity to its fate, impacting consumers and the airline industry. Spirit asserts ongoing efforts to fortify its balance sheet and operations.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Louise and Naomi discuss their memories of the post-graduate course and reflect on how the students were older, from more varied backgrounds and had broader life experiences than you would typically find on an under-graduate course and how these factors enhanced the student's skills and learning, especially when relating to patients. After beginning her GP training, Naomi's husband Aria sadly developed a brain tumour and after surgery, treatments and a yearlong remarkable recovery, the cancer returned and Aria died in 2020.  During his illness, Aria wrote two children's books for their young son about sickness, loss and family, and he also wrote a memoir for adults titled, ‘Broken Brain: Brutally Honest, Brutally Me'. Together, Naomi and Louise discuss the importance of looking beyond the disease and connecting with the person not just the patient, and consider how personal suffering can transform the way you communicate as a clinician. Last year she was blind-sided when her young son Dylan died & now she's raising awareness for brain tumour researchThis interview was so powerful we decided to air it in two parts. This is PART TWO. The last two years have been tough for people – but the enforced lockdowns helped people find nature and walking- and in her business Lou Long has helped more people find health & fitness. Now training in functional nutrition, Lou talked about being unhappy as a child and “eating her emotions” and her early relationship with food, which followed her through into adulthood. It was only when  she had children that she decided she didn't want them to suffer in the way she had, so she started learning about whole food, fitness and founded her business. She realised that it was changing her mindset and mental health that helped change her relationship with food and fitness, and so that's what she starts with, with her clients.Out of the blue her then 6 year old son Dylan started to be poorly at the beginning of the first lockdown in March 2020. It was a long journey to eventually getting a diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Lou talks openly and vulnerably about what that was like for her, Dylan and the family.Lou used all her knowledge to help Dylan live as healthfully and happily as was possible, right up to the end.  It was ultimately her determination to honour and celebrate Dylan's life that took her down the path of raising funds for brain cancer research and awareness. Thank you so much Louise for having the courage to talk with me so that you can bring awareness for the much needed research around brain cancer, as well as helping people in their own lives to live in a fit and health-full way so that they can BE THEIR BEST. In today's episode, I will be speaking with Eddie Adams about part two of his life story. I think you will all be amazed at his outlook on life, his strength and I'm still astounded at his positive hilarious nature that is just infectious. After listening and speaking to Eddie in person, I was completely overwhelmed by his honesty about how he felt about death. I'm not sure how we would all feel if we were given a timeline on life, and we knew we potentially had, 7,8,9 months left to live.  I want everyone who listens to this podcast to take a leaf from Eddie's book and live for every second and every moment you can, be you, fight hard for what you want, be heard and be proud. As Eddie mentioned, the government only funds 1% of the budget to brain tumour research and offers no other clinical trials at this stage, which is ludicrous considering brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. In support of Eddie's story, if you would like to make a donation to Brain Tumour Research you can DONATE HERESocial:Host - @oncelostnowproudGuest - @eddieokadamsCharity - @braintumourrschhttps://www.braintumourresearch.org/donation/donate-nowSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/proudmedia)

Award-winning model, businesswoman and philanthropist Caprice joins Rob and details how she went from the worlds sexiest woman to one of the businesses most successful female entrepreneurs. They discuss the power of silence, the importance of having a strong community of friends around you and how to identify your target market for your product or service.    KEY TAKEAWAYS    You have to put your ego in your back pocket. You have to always think of a ‘plan B', that is the smart thing to do. As an entrepreneur you can never be complacent, you have got to keep moving forward, expanding and innovating. Successful entrepreneurs will understand that if you want to be successful, you have got to put the work in continuously.    You have got to identify the target market for your product or service. It is not enough to just have a ‘good idea', you need to know who is going to buy it. Understand that buyers need to understand who is going to buy into your brand.    It is really important to build a support group and a community of friends. This past year has been a tough time for everyone but it is important to remember that everyone has been in it together. We are all going through the same thing, and we are almost out of it.    Negotiating contracts is an art form. Many people are guilty of stereotyping and it may be hard to pick up credibility purely because of your stereotype. In business, your biggest move is complete silence and restriction. Until you can take out the emotion you have to go silent, and that is your power.    If someone is successful, often people tend to shame that person for discussing their wealth and success. Embrace those who are eager to be successful, it is great to wake up in the morning and have something to aspire to be and do.     Although it is really hard when you have invested so much time and money into something and it is not working, a lot of people tend to put in more to try and make it work. The best play is to get out, take your losses and invest in something that is going to work.    BEST MOMENTS  “You've got to play to your strengths.”  “I just grabbed an opportunity that I saw and I just went with it.” “We're almost there, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” “ We still live in a man's world.” “Instead of battling back or yelling, go silent.”   ABOUT THE GUEST Caprice Bourret is an award-winning model, businesswoman and philanthropist. ecancer visits the Brain Tumour Bank at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, a joint initiative between the NHS and Bristol University. Approximately 7,000 patients in the UK develop primary brain cancer, but there are many more who develop secondary cancer within the brain from different primary sites around the body (such as breast and lung). The brain tumour unit at North Bristol Trust treated over 400 cases of primary brain and spinal cord tumours in 2010. Brain cancer affects both adults and children, and in children it is the second highest cause of death after accidents. One of the major problems with primary brain cancer is that it invades the brain widely as single cells and therefore can be difficult to completely remove by surgery. It also can develop resistance to traditional chemotherapy and therefore tumour relapse is common. Future developments of brain cancer will involve fully understanding each individual’s tumour according to what is driving the abnormal growth of that specific tumour. Then surgery and a range of therapies can be tailored to the individual, providing a personalised medicine approach. Dr Kathreena Kurian, Honorary Consultant Neuropathologist/ University of Bristol Reader in Brain Tumour Research, gives us a background to the tumour bank and Hannah Williams talks us through her PhD research in to a blood test for brain cancer.
