Hello. It's 2025. How can that be? I look at the number and think, that's a futuristic number. Wasn't the future supposed to be easier? Something tells me 2025 will not be easy. Still, I'm determined to meet it with can-do attitude. For now though, let's ease into it. With that it mind I chose this recording, Forest Stream Suite. The environmental sound was captured last June in Forest Park, Portland, Oregon; a place we'll be revisiting throughout the coming year. Many of the seasonal streams were, by that time, down to a trickle. The percussive sound at the top of the recording is one such a trickle, a thread of water falling over a stone, as captured by a homemade hydrophone. The hydrophone is a simple design incorporating a ~$1 bulk-supply 27mm contact mic, a kombucha bottle screw cap, a coin (for ballast), a 1/8th inch stereo cord, a swatch of duct tape, and a couple dips in liquid plastic. I was instructed in the ways of DIY contact mic wizardry by the gifted sound artist Marcus Fischer at a workshop hosted by Oregon Contemporary about a month prior. Thanks Marcus and Oregon Contemporary! Hydrophone recording is something I hope to do more of in the coming year. Maybe I'll invest in something a little more sensitive. Or possibly a stereo pair? The instrumentation follows the pattern of previous Listening Spot releases: One continuous field recording and several distinct musical movements in the same key. With the hydrophone click track as a jumping-off point, this one is reaches out its sound tentacles in new directions, without letting go of the familiar. There's some of my favorite wildlife belting it out here: American Robin, Pacific Wren, Wilson's Warbler, Yellow Warbler… While listening, I can picture the dappled light of the forest. Thanks for tuning in. I'm grateful for your interest. Forest Stream Suite is available under the artist name Listening Spot on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) Friday, January 3rd. I hope you can spend some quiet time with it.Lastly, I took some time to write some reflections on my first year of being on Substack a couple days ago. I didn't send it out as a newsletter, because it was mostly written as an exercise to clarify some things for myself. I'm mentioning it here for those who may be curious about the platform, my impressions as a musician, and some intentions in 2025. Happy New Year! This is a public episode. What Lies Beneath: Hydrophone Recording of the Boardman River

Greetings one and all. We have returned from a brief hiatus after the passing of Rhonda's Dad to venture out to the Boardman River for a hydrophone recording. Hydrowhat? A hydrophone is a specialized microphone used to capture the hidden sounds of aquatic environment that happen beneath the surface of the water. Unlike traditional microphones that are designed to pick up sound waves traveling through the air, hydrophones are engineered to detect sound waves transmitted through the water. These fascinating devices work by converting changes in underwater pressure caused by sound waves into electrical signals. The Boardman River begins near Kalkaska, Michigan and meanders around 28 miles through Traverse City until it empties into the Grand Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. This river is a prime example of a blue ribbon river, offering an exceptional fishing experience for anglers and a pristine habitat for its aquatic residents. One of the key factors that contribute to its blue ribbon status is the health population of brook trout. These trout thrive in the crystal clear waters and diverse ecosystem, which provides the perfect conditions for their growth and reproduction. The blue ribbon designation not only reflects the rivers outstanding water quality and well-managed surroundings ut also highlights the importance of preserving and maintaining such habitats for future generations. Recorded just a stone's throw from the Scheck's Place Trail Camp with the Zoom F6 Field Recorder and the Aquarian H2A Hydrophone, this episode is a nice look at what lies beneath the river in late winter/early spring. The Trail Camp is maintained by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and is used by equestrians seeking to traverse the Shore to Shore Riding Trail. The Shore to Shore Trail is over 220 miles long and connects Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. Primarily used by horseback riders, the trail is also open to hikers and cross-country skiers. I was surprised to see two hearty kayakers on the river today. They stopped at the horse watering hole to take a break as I was packing up my gear. We were all surprised to see someone else on the river and had a great conversation. They had been on the river for about 2 hours and had another hour or so before they concluded their journey at the old Brown Bridge Dam. While they were definitely getting a jump on the kayaking season, their presence signals a gentle swing towards spring and is a very welcome sign. Recording Details:Date and Time: 3/15/2023 | 3:30PMLocation: Scheck's Place Trail Camp, Traverse City, MichiganLandscape/Feature: Boardman RiverConditions: 35F (2C), Sunny, Mild, Light WindsRecording Device: Zoom F6 Field RecorderMicrophone(s): Sonorous Objects SO.1Support the showThanks for listening! ❤️ Your support means the world to me. Josh Miller is a multi-instrumentalist and sound facilitator. He creates sound immersions using evidence-based approaches to help people have a healing, meditative experience. For the past three years, he's traveled the world, exploring music and sound—from studying percussion in Cuba to Nada Yoga in India, and many cultural traditions in between. I met Josh recently at an event in which he collaborated with one of my colleagues to incorporate ocean sounds from a hydrophone in the Monterey Bay into a sound bath with the intention of connecting participants to life underwater. In this conversation, we travel with Josh on his lifelong journey through music, sound, and nature. I think this conversation will be very inspiring for anyone that resonates deeply with music and sound and anyone who's been on—or is in the midst of—a journey to their authentic selves. Listen all the way to the end to hear a musical offering with Josh playing the handpan drum. He combinado hidrófonos y microfonia en ORTF.
