Zack Hughes- How Being A Green Beret Helps in Business Why do veterans make the best entrepreneurs? Because they are the hungriest, the toughest, the most persistent, and the most resourceful people in existence. And even if you've never found yourself in a literal battle, picking up some of those skills will change the way you show up in your business forever. Zack Hughes is a former Green Beret with the Special Forces, whose military career ended with an injury sustained during a tour in Afghanistan. Following his time as a soldier, Zack became the COO of Elite Meet and was inspired to co-found the Operators Association, a community designed to motivate, mentor, and support up-and-coming Special Operators. On this episode of No Bull Business and Brews, hosts Jason and Steve jam with Zack on Zack's early days as a young man who wanted to serve and who became a leader very quickly (and unexpectedly), the ambush that left Zack injured and set him on a new trajectory, the ups and downs of transitioning to civilian life and business, how soldiers and businesses can each benefit from the other's skills and experience, and how Zach and his team are preparing the next generations of exceptional operators. Tune in for an impactful interview with an American warrior who's been at the top as a soldier and an entrepreneur. What You'll Learn: How Zach earned a solid reputation with his new team through a combination of hard work, life experience, and a sense of how to provide real value to others What combat looks like in real life to those in the middle of it (because it's nothing like the movies) Why the most famously "cringe-y" social media platform out there actually ended up being one of the foundations of Zack's incredible success on social media And much more! Megan Thatford, CEO of Elite Meet discusses her passion for military veterans, and her role in connecting veterans to resources during their transition. Elite Meet offers personalized support beyond networking events, helping veterans in various stages of their careers. Megan emphasizes the valuable skills of special operations veterans and encourages considering them for roles in consulting, project management, and sales. Collaboration between businesses and nonprofits is crucial for serving the veteran community effectively. Listen now and learn how to support veterans by offering connections and introductions. Key Takeaways [01:23] Megan's passion lies in warfighter health, a topic not widely known from her public bio. Over the years, she has been deeply involved with nonprofits, dedicated to raising awareness about healthcare outcomes for veterans and fostering connections to improve their overall wellness. This commitment to making a difference is rooted in Megan's outgoing nature and the influence of her father. Treating people as equals and finding value in every interaction is a belief that drives her networking efforts at Elite Meet. [05:52] As CEO of Elite Meet, Megan shares that the organization was founded by former Navy SEAL, John Allen, to support transitioning veterans through networking events. They expanded to conferences and virtual gatherings, adapting during COVID-19. Megan emphasizes their personalized approach in helping veterans succeed after leaving the military. Elite Meet's mission now extends to anyone going through life transitions, offering valuable career resources and connections. [12:02] Elite Meet acts as a crucial connection hub for individuals in transition. It educates veterans about various industries and facilitates networking with professionals from diverse fields. By encouraging personal growth and overcoming self-promotion challenges, Elite Meet empowers veterans to embark on successful post-military careers. The organization's support complements initiatives by The Honor Foundation and Commit Foundation, making the transition process smoother and more fruitful. [17:20] Megan explains how Elite Meet supports elite veterans in their transition to civilian jobs. Jan questions how elite veterans compare to elite business professionals. Megan highlights their shared core characteristics, but notes a gap in understanding veterans' value in the corporate world. She suggests roles like consulting, operations/project management, business development, and customer success as good fits for veterans. They also discuss the importance of understanding the value of relationship sales in the business world. [31:49] Megan highlights the importance of collaboration among nonprofits to better serve veterans. She encourages businesses to explore how they can support veterans and invites listeners to visit the Elite Meet website and be network generous by offering help to veterans in transition. [43:56] Closing quote: Remember, when you stop caring what people think, you lose your capacity for connection. When you're defined by it, you lose out on your capacity for vulnerability. — Brene Brown Quotable Quotes "Being a connector is really the way you view interactions with other humans and other individuals." "I truly believe that everyone you meet has the potential to be a connection for you at some point in your life down the road, tomorrow, today." "People are people. You're not a rank anymore. You're not a boss. If you look at others and interact with them on a human level, you're going to be much happier and much more successful." "Getting to the point where who you are today is not who you were yesterday. It's just a part of who you have become." "Consulting is a great space for anyone across the special operations community." "Skillbridge internships or fellowships are a fantastic way to do a try before you buy type experience." "Collaboration with businesses and nonprofits is the way forward." Resources Mentioned The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. LLC | Self-Reliant Leadership. Growing up in North Texas, Zack Hughes always heard positive stories from his grandfather, a World War II veteran, about life in the military. After 9/11, the call to join the military felt strong and the right thing to do, yet, he wasn't sure what exactly that path would look like until years later. “I had just left grad school and didn't know what I wanted to do,” Zack says. “I thought maybe I wanted to go into law enforcement but decided against that and pivoted to Special Forces. And it was big for me.” Deciding to become a Green Beret, he graduated from his Special Forces qualifications course as class valedictorian before being deployed to Afghanistan. After seven years of service and the in-combat loss of a close friend, he was hit by a rock-propelled grenade, went through rehab and four surgeries, and ultimately left the army for civilian life in 2019. Today, through his involvement with Elite Meet, he's helping other special ops veterans land leadership roles in Corporate America, and he's also sharing his expertise as the founder of the Operations Association community. On this episode of the Working For a Dream Podcast, Patrick and Zack talk about the biggest lessons Zack learned on the field, his transition to civilian life and how he's helping OA members push past their comfort zone. What You'll Learn: How his time as a Green Beret changed his perspective on America's opportunities and resources Why the principles you learn in Special Operations are crucial in the business world How he's “connecting the dots” for other veterans And much more! Great chat with Zack Hughes. We talk about his background, Elite Meet, and the importance of networking post-military. Zack is the COO of Elite Meet, a non-profit that helps “connect these elite veterans [SOF & fighter pilots] with high quality employment opportunities.” Listen in… About Elite Meet: Ever wondered what Navy SEALs, fighter pilots and other elite veterans do once they leave the military? They go job hunting, just like everybody else looking for a new career. Except special operators and fighter pilots have spent on average 10 or more prime income earning years out of today's offices and businesses and inside of combat units that demand all of their time, leaving no room for post-military career exploration until their separation is upon them; finding their place in the civilian world can be as big a challenge as anything they have faced in training or in combat. Elite Meet was founded in 2017 to connect these elite veterans with high quality employment opportunities.WEB: Elitemeet.us Instagram: @zackhughes1 @elite_meetFind Zack on YouTube “Zack Hughes”Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)

Josh Duntz is a Navy EOD Master Technician experienced in leading small, high performing and dynamic teams of special operations personnel. Josh has done seemingly everything possible to engage proactively with his military-to-civilian transition. Over the last couple of years he has finished his bachelor’s degree, completed the 6-month transition fellowship with The Honor Foundation, worked with Elite Meet to network with other veterans, and is jumping into a DoD SkillBridge internship with a company on the west coast he was introduced to through Shift.org. Josh is also a founder and member of the leadership team at the Navy Special Operations Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which ensures Special Operations personnel and their families have the tools needed to overcome the challenges they face. I wanted to talk to a currently transitioning service member like Josh because his perspective is based on a very modern, holistic approach to leveraging transition resources. During the last couple of years Josh has been deliberate about his planning and preparation for a career after the military which has positioned him ideally to get a job that he's excited about that will allow him and his wife to relocate back home to Tampa in a work-from home business development role. "There are things that scare us that we still want to do, and those are the tests in life. Those are the things we need to seek out and do. Because if you're excited to do something that scares you, that's a test. And I think in order to be successful at it, most things that are scary and hard usually take a while to get."-- John Allen Welcome back to the Life Well Dunn Podcast. On this episode, I am joined by retired Navy SEAL, John Allen. Not only has John served and protected the USA as one of the most elite, he has also founded his company, Elite Meet, which helps connect Special Operations Forces and fighter pilots with top professionals. The transition from military life, let alone being a SEAL, to civilian life is incredibly difficult, as John describes. We talked about the similarities between professional athlete's and our military and the difficulties that show up at the end of their careers. In a sense, there is a loss of identity that must be dealt with and understood. John takes us through what it means to be a Navy SEAL, how he came to wanting to become a SEAL, the mindset, challenges, and the growth that took place throughout the long journey, and how we can apply this to any fears and dreams that we might have, no matter what it might be. John is one of the most motivating humans I have ever had the opportunity to speak with. His message doesn't apply strictly to the military life. It is applicable to any challenge or fear you are faced with. Be sure to check out this podcast on iTunes, review, rate and subscribe! And, be sure to follow John on social media: Instagram: @johnballen418 @elite_meet and check out the website, elitemeet.us You can donate, sponsor, or even contact them to see how you might be able to assist in bringing this company to life.
