From NYCC in 2015, there are interviews with Kody Smit-McPhee, Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult and writer/direct Jake Paltrow in this engaging film that mixes SF and westerns concentrating on family.
For the A24 Rocks crew's 35th movie review, they take on the 2016 documentary "De Palma," directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow. They also invite fellow postman and world-renowned Brian De Palma expert Ray Neeman onto the podcast, who has seen and lived De Palma's whole filmography. This documentary is an autobiographical look into every single Brian De Palma film (director of Scarface, Carrie, and Mission Impossible), featuring an exclusive and intimate interview with the director himself. De Palma takes you through his films in chronological order and give you inside baseball (a phrase our host Cole can't stand) on how his films were made. Does this documentary live up to the standard Brian De Palma set in his own films? This pride of A24 film nerds discuss and debate it. Caution: movie spoilers. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we get a little nasty. We get a little creepy. We dig into the works of Brian De Palma! Conor and I are joined by filmmaker and returning guest Chadd Harbold, whose new film Private Property is now available on Hulu! We also examine the film Private Property from 1960, which Harbold's 2022 film reimagines, along with the new film's De Palma-esque inspirations. The B-Sides discussed are: Phantom of the Paradise, Casualties of War, Femme Fatale, and The Black Dahlia. We also take lengthy pit-stops at The Fury and Mission to Mars. Harbold explains why Femme Fatale is De Palma's best film, why the old, great directors need to higher young DPs when shooting digital, which actors know what they're doing in The Black Dahlia, and which actors do NOT. There's references to this Slant Magazine article as well as De Palma, the superb documentary from Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow (now streaming on Showtime). Finally, we must mention the intensive retrospective of De Palma The Film Stage took on in 2016. Oh, and we talk about the greatness of that Mission to Mars by Ennio Morricone. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!

Michael Shannon grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and began his professional stage career in Chicago, Illinois.
Brian De Palma is not a name commonly associated with campy rock-opera frivolity, but his 1974 film Phantom of the Paradise is closer to Rocky Horror territory than you'd expect from the Carrie auteur. A gonzo melange of Gaston le Roux, the Faust myth and the 1970s music scene before it figured out how to be cool, it's like nothing else you've ever seen before, and this week Graham joins his Directors' Lottery colleague Rob Simpson to figure it all out.Along the way, we discuss De Palma's career, its roots in experimental hippie-era satire and its many highs and lows. We also discuss Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow's 2015 documentary about the director, and how it affected our understanding of this film. There's also room for some consideration of the film's star, singer-songwriter Paul Williams, a delightful anecdote about a young Guillermo del Toro and a quiz about the many, many lawsuits this film unexpectedly faced. If you don't want to see us reduced signing our life's work away in blood to make money, you can donate to our Patreon. This week, we review a film in which Daniel Radcliffe plays a magical corpse that farts and gets boners — no, not “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” but the whimsical philosophical comedy Swiss Army Man. Danny also tells us many fun Brian De Palma facts he learned watching the eponymous documentary directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow. Did you know Brian loves the smell of acorns? Interesting. Plus, we reaffirm our performative wokeness with a discussion about Tim Burton, Star Wars, and diversity; Danny goes on and on about all the brilliant films he is seeing at the London Film Festival that Sam isn't; and we follow in Swiss Army Man’s footsteps by finding poetry in flatulence.
