Today's best of the best: NDP MP Charlie Angus private members Bill 372 (which Angus compares to legislative efforts of the 1990's to punish the tobacco industry for wilfull and incorrect advertising), would result in positive advertising/messaging by oil and natural gas producers and their supporters could result in massive fines and possible imprisonment. Note: Angus did not reply to an invitation to appear on this program) Also: Joe Biden recently placed a temporary halt on issuing U.S. liquid natural gas export licences. Are many (most) First Nations in Canada supportive of encouraging Canada to engage in export of LNG?   Guest: Chris Sankey. Former elected councillor at Lax Kw'alaams first nation, businessman, op ed writer and senior Fellow at the MacDonald-Laurier Institute.  Originally Aired Feb 10, 2024. Is Canada veering (stumbling) toward a late 2024 federal election of our own? Are federal political parties fairly focusing on the issues driving Canadian views and concerns, or are the parties in it for their own success? We ask a former premier and federal minister for his thoughts. As well, why are more younger Canadians than younger Ameicans and younger Canadian women supporting Donald Trump? Guest: Ujjal Dosanjh. Fmr British Columbia premier and former Liberal federal Minister of Health.  Originally Aired Jan 28, 2024. This was a heaveily debated issue 30+ years ago and it's back. NDP sponsored children's rights legislation, Bill 273, would ban spanking of children at home or using force on children at school by supervisory adults (teachers) received support for a second reading in parliament by a 208-115 vote. Section 43 of the Criminal Code (introduced in 1892) and most recently amended by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004, permits parents to spank judiciously, not in anger and with age consideration of children. The Canadian Teachers Federation opposes the NDP bill/ What about parents? And how does a prominent criminal lawyer view the proposed legislation? (It has been argued parents forcing a child into a children's car seat might run afoul of no corporal punishment legislation.) Chapter 1: It’s a landmark moment as the first COVID-19 vaccines are administered in the UK. We spoke with Global News European Bureau Chief Crystal Goomansingh about the mood there. Chapter 2: We’re seeing recession level prices in the Vancouver condo market right now.  They’re taking a markedly different trajectory than standalone homes and there’s plenty of them on the market.  Guest: Dane Eitel, founder of Eitel Insights. Chapter 3: Could a drug like MDMA be used to effectively treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? Some research has already proven to be very successful. Now the Vancouver-based company Numinus is seeking approval for a first-of-its-kind MDMA-assisted psychotherapy trial in Canada. If approved, they say “this trial will take a meaningful step in furthering the access and delivery of MDMA-assisted treatments for individuals experiencing PTSD globally.” To learn more, our Niki Reitmayer spoke to Payton Nyquvest who is the Chair, CEO, and co-founder of Numinus. Chapter 4: A remarkable figure in human rights here in BC has passed away.  Joe Arvay was a constitutional lawyer who played a pivotal role in the fight for medically assisted dying, and he leaves behind a rich legacy we want to talk about here with former premier, former federal health minister Ujjal Dosanjh.  Guest:  Ujjal Dosanjh, former premier and federal health minister. Chapter 5: A controversial tax increase in Surrey is going ahead, in spite of strong opposition from members of council.  The $100 annual fee paid for every parcel of land in the city will jump to $300 as a result of the decision, something opponents are calling unfair since it disproportionately impacts people who are struggling financially.  Guest: Jack Hundial, Surrey City Councillor. Ujjal Dosanjh is Canada’s first Indo Canadian to be named premier. Ujjal Dosanjh was born in India in 1947, then moved to England before settling in Canada in 1968. In British Columbia, he earned a BA from Simon Fraser University and a law degree from the University of British Columbia before setting up his own law practice in Vancouver. He got involved with human rights work through the Civil Liberties Association, multicultural support organizations and the Farm Workers' Union. Although a moderate in the Indo Canadian community, Dosanjh learned about political extremism and brutality the hard way when he was attacked and severely beaten one day by members of his community who did not share his views. He entered British Columbia politics in 1991 as an NDP MLA, and eventually worked his way through a number of cabinet portfolios, including the honoured role of attorney general between 1995 and 2000. When his premier, Glen Clark, was involved in a scandal involving favouritism toward a neighbour, Dosanjh was not able to protect him. Premier Clark stepped down and Dosanjh won the leadership of his party. Dosanjh was sworn in as British Columbia’s premier – the first Indo Canadian to hold that title – on February 24, 2000. However, due to his predecessor’s scandal and other political blunders, the following year’s election wiped out all but two of the NDP MLAs, and Dosanjh was not one of them. He returned to practice law until Prime Minister Paul Martin asked him to change parties and run for the federal Liberals. Dosanjh agreed and won a seat in the election of June 2004. The next month, he was appointed federal minister of health in Martin’s short-lived government. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
