A trunk ride with Billy Gibbons, a pair of “blessed” boots, and the moment a lyric became a band name—this one has stories. We sit down with American Mile's Eugene Rice for a fast, funny, and unfiltered tour through the making of a modern Southern rock band built on grit, harmony, and a never-quit work ethic. From a Vermont town of 1,500 to SoCal stages, Eugene traces the path: sleeping in rehearsal spaces, selling a bike to buy an RV, and logging 200+ dates a year—often in four-hour marathons that would break most bands. He breaks down how “American Mile” emerged mid-take with producer Keith Nelson (Buckcherry), why a bison ended up on the merch table, and how thrift-store scarves became a signature stage move that also solved the hated-iPad problem. We get into sound and influence—Allman Brothers and Skynyrd bones with modern threads from The Black Crowes and Blackberry Smoke. Eugene spotlights the B3 and harmony vocals as secret sauce, plus the rotating “fifth member” who steps in for showcases. Then it gets practical: the economics of LA gigs, the reality of casino anchors, and why a vintage guitar day job keeps the dream alive and the tone honest. He opens the hood on the business too—band democracy, equal pay, and a vesting path to ownership that rewards the grind—while telling road-war stories about blown control arms, stolen catalytic converters, and welding fixes that saved shows.Underneath the laughs and lore sits a clear message: the American dream is still there if you work for it. Mentors matter. Systems matter. Saying yes matters. If you're building a band, a creative career, or any longshot, you'll leave with playbook-level tactics and renewed fight. Jay Franze and Tiffany Mason dive headfirst into this question, sparking a fascinating conversation with their listeners about the lines that have stuck with them through the years. From Garth Brooks' bittersweet reflection that "I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance" to Johnny Cash's chilling confession "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die," country music has always excelled at distilling complex emotions into single, powerful lines. "I really think this album beats the last album, and I didn't think I was going to be able to say that," Jones confesses with genuine excitement. "We write really well together," she explains, describing how they can craft entire songs even while in different states. The conversation delves into the vulnerability required for effective co-writing and how Jones draws from personal experiences to create authentic music that resonates with listeners. The interview takes an exciting turn when Jones announces her participation as one of twelve finalists on "The Road" – a new music competition show premiering October 19th on CBS and Paramount Plus. Produced by Taylor Sheridan and Blake Shelton, the series follows artists traveling on a tour bus from venue to venue, with audiences voting for their favorites. Jones describes the life-changing experience of opening for Keith Urban and how this show differs from her previous appearances on American Idol, The Voice, and Real Country.Whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering her music, this episode offers a heartfelt glimpse into the creative mind of an artist on the rise. LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/Billie Jo Jones: https://www.billiejojones.com/ Support the show

Send us a textWhat does it really take to chase country music dreams while keeping your life in balance? In this heartfelt conversation with rising country artist Trey Calloway, we pull back the curtain on the realities of the Nashville music scene and the personal sacrifices that come with pursuing passion.Trey opens up about his latest single "She Don't Break It," co-written with legendary songwriter Terry McBride (known for hits with Brooks & Dunn and George Strait) and produced by Brandon Hood, whom Trey describes as "Nashville's best kept secret." The song represents Trey's commitment to authentic country music that connects immediately with audiences—"By the second or third chorus, they're singing along with it," he shares. The most compelling moments come when Trey reveals the personal challenges of his musical journey. Unlike many artists who move to Nashville in their youth, Trey arrived in his late twenties—"past the ego stuff, past the drinking and partying." Now he navigates a complex life triangle between Nashville (where he works), South Carolina (where his wife lives), and his hometown (where his son lives). "It's been tough," he admits, "but we're closer than we've ever been."With refreshing honesty, Trey discusses the balance between ambitious dreams and practical planning: "If I don't make it in the music business, I'm going to start a restaurant down at the beach." His journey reminds us that behind every song on the radio is a real person making real sacrifices, finding joy in the creative process, and holding onto what matters most along the way.Whether you're a country music fan or simply appreciate stories of passion and perseverance, Trey's insights offer a genuine glimpse into the heart of a working musician chasing dreams while keeping his feet firmly planted on the ground. Listen now and discover why authentic storytelling remains at the core of great country music.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/Trey Calloway: https://treycallowaymusic.com/Jay Franze, Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze/ Support the show

Send us a textWhat makes a country music legend truly important? Is it chart success, cultural impact, or lasting influence? Jay Franze and Tiffany Mason tackle these questions head-on while reviewing a controversial list of "The 25 Most Important Women in Country Music" that has them both fired up from the start. The hosts share their predictions before diving into the rankings, confidently naming Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire as the obvious choices for the top spots. What follows is a passionate dissection of the list that places newer artists higher than established legends, sparking genuine outrage when they discover Dolly Parton ranks only seventh while Carrie Underwood claims the number one position."Where's her amusement park? Where's her giving back kids books that can't afford books? Where's her charity programs?" Tiffany questions, highlighting how the list seems to prioritize recent commercial success over decades of cultural impact and philanthropy. The conversation reveals a deeper issue about how female artists are evaluated in country music and the often arbitrary nature of industry rankings.Between their good-natured banter, the hosts also cover breaking news from Nashville, including Morgan Wallen's youth charity work, an exciting potential Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton collaboration, and Australia's growing country music scene. They wrap up with listener submissions about the most underrated female vocalists, creating a show that celebrates women in country music while questioning who gets to determine their "importance."LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show

The conversation naturally flows into deeper territory when the trio dives into the Recording Academy's decision to split country music Grammy categories into "traditional" and "contemporary." This sparks a thoughtful debate about what constitutes authentic country sound in today's evolving landscape, with everyone weighing in on which current artists are keeping traditional country alive.Between updates on Lainey Wilson's Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit, Lauren Alaina's journey into motherhood, and Led Zeppelin's surprising new album announcement, the hosts pose their question of the day: "If your life had a soundtrack, what would the opening song be?"
