This week we welcome Dr. Jay L. Nadeau to the Weekly Space Hangout. Jay is an Associate Professor in the Physics department at Portland State University and the founder of the Nadeau Lab (https://motility.research.pdx.edu/index.html) where they research nanoparticles, fluorescence imaging, and develop instrumentation for the detection of life elsewhere in the solar system. Prior to PSU, she was associate professor of biomedical engineering and physics at McGill University (2004–2015) and a Research Professor at Caltech (2015-2017). Before McGill, she was a member of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Center for Life Detection, and previous to that a Burroughs-Wellcome postdoctoral scholar in the laboratory of Henry A. Lester at Caltech. She received her PhD in physics from the University of Minnesota in 1996. The Nadeau Lab receives funding from NASA, the NSF, private foundations, and industry. The group features chemists, microbiologists, roboticists, physicists, and physician-scientists, all learning from each other and hoping to speak each other's language. A believer in bringing biology to physicists as well as physics to biologists, Jay teaches upper-division courses in Biophysics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics. She also teaches Radiation Physics in the OHSU Medical Physics program. She is the author of two textbooks, Introduction to Experimental Biophysics and Truly Tricky Graduate Physics Problems, and a popular science photo book, Going To MARS: Science in Canada's High Arctic. Jay is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in STEM, and seeks to broaden the pipeline into physics by creating new courses and programs that are friendly to people who are coming to physics after other careers or majors, to working professionals including teachers, and to underrepresented students. She is a member of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), the American Physical Society, and the American Chemical Society. **************************************** The Weekly Space Hangout is a production of CosmoQuest. Jay L'Ecuyer is a Comedian, Writer and One Half of a Comedy Duo named, "Jay and Eytan." This episode goes into Jay's Canadian roots, his newly found fatherhood and why we should all let comedians be comedians. Do you know how old the earth is? Depending on your worldview, you may answer this question differently. According to radio-isotope dating, it is about 4.6 Billion years old. But, according to a Biblical worldview, the earth is much younger. So how does radioisotope dating work? Are there any flaws in the methodology? Does it conclusively prove the earth could not possibly be young? Today on Educate For Life, Kevin is speaking with Dr. Jay Wile. Dr. Jay Wile holds an earned Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in nuclear chemistry. He has presented numerous lectures on the topics of Nuclear Chemistry, Christian Apologetics, Homeschooling, and Creation vs. Evolution. He has published lots of articles on these subjects in nationally recognized journals and has authored or co-authored 13 award-winning science textbooks. He is best known as the author of award-winning elementary, junior, and senior high school science courses including the Science through HisStory, “Discovering Design with…”, and “Exploring Creation with…” series. Having studied nuclear chemistry in detail, Dr. Jay Wile knows many of the ins and outs of how radio-isotope dating. He has witnessed the process of testing samples and then choosing which data points to use from that sample. In other words, he has watched scientists eliminate certain possible ages of a sample simply because it doesn't make sense to those scientists. To simplify it, scientists are picking the age range of a sample instead of considering all the available data. Tune in for a great episode. To view Dr. Jay Wile's work and curriculum, head over to https://bereanbuilders.com. You can also check out https://blog.drwile.com/. Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy is the model that Andrew Christensen developed for working with couples along with Neil Jacobson. In his extensive work and research with couples he found that most couples therapy was focused around change. A primary difference in his approach is that it is focused on acceptance first. Andrew Christensen has been researching couples for 35 years. He is a distinguished professor at The University of California Las Angeles. He is the author of a multitude of articles and co-author of the book Acceptance and Change in Couples Therapy and Reconcilable Differences. The Couples Therapist Couch is the podcast for Couples Therapists about the practice of couples therapy. The host, Shane Birkel, interviews an expert in the field of couples therapy each week. They discuss the importance of having a good relationship with your body, and learning to love the perfectly imperfect vessel you're walking the Earth in. And then Kate makes Jay look at a possible childhood wound he doesn't actually feel like discussing. Oh.... and Kate raps again.
