In this episode of The Journey of my Mother's Son podcast, I sit down and talk with my good friend, Jeff Potter. This is the second podcast that I've done with Jeff. We've known each other for over 12 years now and our common love for baseball, teaching kids life lessons through the game and giving back is what makes us such great friends. One of the most iconic lines in movie history goes like this, “Hey…Dad, you want to have a catch?” Jeff Potter is the founder of the Potter Baseball Summer Tour and he is looking to join thousands of people together on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at 7:00 PM EDT to do just that, have a catch. He's hoping to have the World's Largest Game of Catch at many different locations throughout the country that night while also raising money for a great cause. The Potter Summer Baseball Tour has partnered with CureSearch over the pat several years in an effort to help raise money for pediatric cancer research. This year, The World's Largest Game Catch will help to raise money for CureSearch. Participants pay a registration of only $5 for kids under 12 years old and $10 for participants 13 years old and above. The goal is to raise between $5,000 and $10,000 for the organization. Participants at all of the virtual locations are asked to take a video of their game of catch and forward it to Jeff after the event so that a longer video can be compiled and the event can be shared with the world.
This week on the Original Sports Podcast we are excited to interview Jeff Potter. For the last 12 years Potter Baseball has thoroughly enjoyed working with kids, families, organizations, and the community at large to bring some fun to the game of baseball; whether through the annual Potter Baseball Tour, yearly trips to Cooperstown with teams, running free clinics, or visiting schools. We love baseball, and we love kids. We have tried our best to combine the love of baseball with community service and charity work. The Potter Baseball Tour alone has traveled to over 100 towns, played hundreds of baseball games, run hundreds of free clinics, and raised over $100,000.00 for non-profit organizations. Along with this, we have focused on teaching life lessons through many different methods, and we are constantly striving to put emphasis on our four tenets of passion, hard work, respect, and selflessness.Since 2009 we have taken 12-u teams to Cooperstown for their weeklong tournament, starting that year with one team, and now we take three teams annually to take in this wonderful event. Over 200 families have participated over the years. Coach Potter has also written three books, all available on Amazon. They are “Whatever Happened to Baseball?”, “Saving Baseball”, and “Far from Being Done”. This summer, the Potter Tour is taking on a large goal of setting a World Record for most people playing catch at one time. The main event will take place in Red Lion, PA, but there will also be over 100 virtual locations set up all over the country participating at the same time. Coach Potter grew up in Ellwood City, PA, located about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Although he now resides in the Baltimore area with his wife Sheryl, he is still a Pittsburgh fan at heart. We will talk with Jeff about his passion for the game of baseball. SOme of the life lesson’s he has taught young people through the game and what his goals and aspiration were when he began this adventure and just exactly where they have grown to today. Thanks to an inspiring group of volunteers from Potter Baseball Tour! They’re a group of kids who travel for more than a month, doing service projects and making the world a little better. Their latest stop was at Bilger's Rocks, repainting some picnic tables. After they were done working, the group got a tour of Bilger's Rocks, learned some history of the area, and got a nice lunch in the cool shade of the rocks. Thanks to these awesome young men and thank you to Coach Jeff Potter!
I've known Jeff Potter for over 12 years now. We first met when he published his first book, "Whatever Happened to Baseball." We share the same philosophy of teaching life lessons through the game of baseball. I was in the midst of writing my first book, "The Beauty of a Diamond, through the eyes of a Coach." when Jeff and I met. He was a big reason as to why I got it to the finish line and published, I had been working on it for years and no one other than my wife and mom knew that I was writing it, he challenged me to start telling everyone that I was writing a book. When I asked him why, he simply said that those who I tell would hold me accountable to get it finished because they'd ask me about the progress. I followed his advise and he was right. I published in 2012. Jeff now runs the Potter Baseball Tour, in which he takes a group of young people on a 30 day field trip across the Mid-Atlantic region playing barnstorming baseball games and giving back to the communities in which they visit. He has written two additional books since we met, "Saving Baseball" and "Far from being Done."

Planning a vacation is often so exhausting that you need the vacation just to recover. Choosing a destination, planning the itinerary and scheduling all the details can take up a huge amount of time and energy. But a new company takes away the need for travelers to plan their own vacations and taps into the experience economy to create unique adventures. Manifest is the brainchild of Jeff Potter, the former CEO of Frontier Airlines and Exclusive Resorts. From his decades in the travel industry, Jeff learned the importance of getting away on vacation. Millions of vacation days go unused every year, and a major reason is that people don't have the time or desire to plan their own trips. Modern travelers are also leaning more heavily to experiential travel and want to immerse themselves into the places they travel instead of simply staying in a resort. Manifest plans group travel expeditions throughout the U.S. Instead of long, international trips, these vacations are more manageable for people to fit into their busy schedules. Customers join a local chapter, pay the annual fee for the travel club and then can sign up for as many trips as they want. Because of Potter's connections in the industry, the cost of private aircrafts, luxury accommodations and exclusive experiences actually ends up being close to what people would pay for booking a business class trip on their own. Group travel also brings people together in a unique way. With Manifest's model, the people travelling together in a group likely live in the same city and have similar interests. The specialized trips range from an upscale Sonoma wine tasting weekend to whitewater rafting through the Grand Canyon. Potter calls it “tribal travel” as the groups consist of likeminded people who share a passion for experiential travel. Manifest is built around creating amazing experiences and building trust. According to Potter, what customers want more than luxury experiences is authenticity. They want to truly experience their travel destination. Manifest plans excursions that are often off the beaten path and something travelers might not find if they were making their own arrangements. To ensure guests are satisfied with the arrangements, Manifest customers complete a short survey when they join the travel club, which includes details about their preferences and activities. The company listens to customers to offer a wide variety of experiences to meet everyone's needs. In our modern world, customers tend to value experiences over things. They're investing more in travel than ever before, and Manifest takes advantage of the need for convenience, experiences and community by creating unique, personalized travel opportunities.
