Jenny Young spent a great deal of time building with her father in their family's garage when she was growing up. She learned how familiar things worked by taking them apart, and how to put them back together in new combinations. It was this hands-on building experience that stayed with Jenny and ultimately sparked the idea for Brooklyn Robot Foundry. After getting a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Jenny worked in various areas of design, manufacturing, supply chain management and software development. It was when she was working in education technology that Jenny saw an overwhelming need for more open-ended, hands-on learning for elementary school students. Between reduced school budgets, overcrowding, and standardized testing, students were no longer getting an immersive engineering education. In 2011, Jenny launched Brooklyn Robot Foundry at the New York City Maker Faire. The unique approach would combine kid-friendly projects with room for experimentation and creative design, resulting in working robots and elated, children.Founded in 2011 and with four locations open currently, the brand focuses on sharing the fun of STEAM education with children everywhere, inspiring them to continue a life full of exploration, problem-solving, and imagination. They do this by offering fun, creative and educational classes, parties, camps and field trips to children 2-14 years old.Their signature designs and building methods allow children to build on their own, resulting not only in a cool robot but also in increased confidence. They provide the guidelines for each day's robots, but the final design is up to the student, offering a variety of programs, ranging in commitment from a single class to an entire semester.Connect with Jenny & The Brooklyn Robot Foundry:Website: brooklynrobotfoundry.comFacebook: @robotfoundryInstagram: @robotfoundryChris Woods is the host of the STEM Everyday Podcast... “Do Jewish prayer services nurture us… or narrow us?”— Dr Elliot MalametThis is the first episode in a series of special Living Jewishly podcast episodes that will take a deeper look at the Jewish holidays. As we approach Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, many of us will celebrate the high holidays by attending synagogue or shul. However, particularly for young Jews not religiously oriented in the traditional sense, there is an increasing disconnect to synagogue life, institutional ritual, and liturgy. With shul attendance also affected by Covid-19, communities have been further distanced by digital spaces. This episode explores our emotional, spiritual, and social relationship with — and connection to — synagogue structures and prayer services during the high holidays. In a series of illuminating interviews with members of the Jewish community, traditional and modern approaches to the language and practice of prayer are discussed in relation to virtual engagement, the campfire community, and how we connect in a changing world.“The act of prayer is an act of commission and omission. It has to be both, and you have to engage and disengage at the same time.”— Rabbi Yossi SabermanThis episode discusses: What millennial Jews think about synagogue life — and what they would change about prayer services and texts Working with sacred texts — the tension between humanism and the sacred in prayer language How the practice of non-traditional prayer, such as social justice activism as a form of holy work and divine communication, can be secular or complement institutional ritual Highlights: 00:51 Introduction02:02 Ruth Chitiz & changes to prayer06:11 Noah Tile & identity07:49 Jenny Young & inclusion10:04 Divine connection in Judaism v. Are you a writing instructor or student who's prepared to turn over all present and future communication practices to the magic of ChatGPT? Not so fast! On today's show, we are joined by Dr. Emily M. Bender, Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington and a pre-eminent academic critic of so-called “generative AI” technologies. Dr. Bender's expertise involves not only how these technologies work computationally, but also how language is used in popular media to hype, normalize, and even obfuscate AI and its potential to affect our lives.Dr. Bender's most well-known scholarly work related to this topic is a co-authored conference paper from 2021 entitled, “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?” In our conversation, Emily explains why she and her co-authors chose the “stochastic parrot” metaphor – how this helps us to understand large language models and other related technologies more accurately than many competing metaphors. We go on to discuss several actual high-stakes, significant issues related to these technologies, before Dr. Bender provides a helpful index of some the most troublesome ways they are talked about in the media: synthetic text “gotcha”s, infancy metaphors, linear models of progress, inevitability framings, and many other troublesome tropes. We conclude with a close reading of a recent piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education about using synthetic text generators in writing classrooms: “Why I'm Excited About Chat GPT” by Jenny Young. Young's article exemplifies many of the tropes Emily discussed earlier, as well as capturing lots of strange prevailing ideas about writing pedagogy, genre, and rhetoric in general. We hope that you enjoy this podcast tour through the world of AI hype media, and we ask that you please remain non-synthetic ‘til next time – no shade to parrots!

Jenny Young, founder of Brooklyn Robot Foundry, had an atypical upbringing. Hers was a childhood filled with exotic, behind the scenes ‘how's it done or made' adventures. Failure was encouraged, applauded and even fun for Jenny. It was all about the process of exploration, building and making rather than perfection. Seems seeing failure as fun is a vital ingredient to being a mechanical engineer and robot designer and builder. In this episode, Jenny Young joins Rebecca Monet and Tracy Kawa on The Franchise Woman podcast: Where Passion & Purpose Collide. She shares the story behind Brooklyn Robot Foundry and its philosophy for inspiring children and adults to push the boundaries of their imagination, discover the fun in failure all while building some really cool robots.
Revenge of the Black Best Friend is a brand new CBC Gem original comedy series from award-winning playwright, host, producer, and CBC personality Amanda Parris, puts a spotlight – and surreal twist – on the familiar tropes, stereotypes and typecasting that's been forced on Black actors. The entire six-part series debuted on the free CBC Gem streaming service on Thursday, March 31, 2022. It also had its international premiere as an official selection in the Short Form competition at the prestigious Cannes International Series Festival (Canneseries) April 1-6, 2022. From dismissed divas to sidelined superheroes, the series follows Dr. Toni Shakur (played by The Porter's Oluniké Adeliyi), a self-help guru whose mission is to cancel the entertainment industry's reliance on token Black characters…that is before she gets cancelled herself. This highly irreverent series is partially inspired by Robert Townsend's iconic ‘80s spoof Hollywood Shuffle, and is in the spirit of contemporary offerings like Atlanta, Random Acts of Flyness and Sorry to Bother You. Revenge of the Black Best Friend is directed by Thyrone Tommy, Ian Keteku and Jerome Kruin. Motion (Co-Executive Producer, Writer) and Julian De Zotti (Executive Producer) are also part of the production team. It stars Oluniké Adeliyi, Cara Ricketts, Araya Mengesha, Dwain Murphy, Ashton James, Julian De Zotti and Jenny Young with special appearances from Andrea Lewis, Tyrone Edwards and Mark Strong. Recently, we spoke with Olunike Adeliyi (Dr. Toni Shakur), Ashton James, Ian Keteku and Jerome Kruin from the show. Centred around the cataclysmic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami Carried Away on the Crest of a Wave illustrates how world events link us all together. From two brothers in Malaysia trying to save their house from sinking, a Canadian radio-show host angered by disaster-relief efforts, a grieving Japanese father, to a lonely woman in Utah baking a pie, the play explores humanity in times of disaster. Winner of the 2015 Governor General's Literary Award for Drama and directed by Siminovitch Prize laureate Kim Collier, carried away on the crest of a wave shows that despite our differences, we are all connected through serendipity, loss and love. The stellar cast includes John Ng from CBC TV's Kim's Convenience, Zaib Shaikh, star of CBC TV's Little Mosque on the Prairie, Adrienne Wong, a frequent director at the GCTC, Kayvon Khoshkam from NAC's productions of Twelfth Night and The December Man (L'homme de décembre) and Jenny Young from the NAC's productions of Innocence Lost: A Play about Steven Truscott and The Penelopiad.
