Today Elaine and Louise chat with Comedian, poet, public speaker and actor ALOK. We talk about their recent short film ALOK which premiered at Sundance and was directed by Alex Hedison and produced by Jodie Foster. We also chat about Hannah Gadsby's Gender Agenda on Netflix. Being soft with ourselves and each other, their new show Hairy SITUATION, the joy of creating art and remembering that nothing is ever created individually but is created with others in multiple different. ALOK: HAIRY SITUATION - Underbelly Bristo Square Dates: 13th-25th August @ 4:10 pm Tickets available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/alok ALOK ALOK is an internationally acclaimed poet, comedian, public speaker, and actor. ALOK's literary works “Beyond the Gender Binary,” “Femme in Public,” and “Your Wound, My Garden,” have garnered global recognition. Their dynamic presence has captivated audiences in over 40 countries, with sold-out shows at venues including Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, and headlining Netflix is a Joke and Just For Laughs Festivals. ALOK can currently be seen in Hannah Gadsby's Gender Agenda comedy special on Netflix. Their show has been described as "provocative and powerful" (CHORTLE) and a "jaw-dropping celestial event" (TO DO LIST LONDON). For their contributions to culture and entertainment, they have been honored with the ACLU of Southern California Bill of Rights Award, Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment Trailblazer Award, and were selected as the inaugural LGBTQ Scholar in Residence at the University of Pennsylvania. They are the subject of the docu-short “ALOK” executive produced by Jodie Foster and directed by Alex Hedison, which made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. On screen, they can also be seen in Complicated Order opposite Midori Francis, The Trans List, and (forthcoming) Absolute Dominion opposite Patton Oswalt. On television, they can be seen on season 3 of the critically acclaimed HBO Max series SORT OF opposite Bilal Baig, Hulu's Planet Sex with Cara Delevingne, ABC's PRIDE: To Be Seen – A Soul of A Nation, Netflix's Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, and HBO's Random Acts of Flyness. Hairy Situation Flippant and fabulous. Wicked sharp and delightfully silly. Gender non-conforming and genre non-conforming. Internationally acclaimed comedian ALOK makes a triumphant return to the Fringe with their new stand-up show after a sold-out run at the Traverse Theatre in 2022 which was described as 'provocative and powerful' (Chortle.co.uk) and a 'jaw-dropping celestial event' (ToDoList.org.uk). Fresh from their appearance on Hannah Gadsby's Gender Agenda comedy special on Netflix and headlining the Netflix is a Joke Festival, ALOK delivers a crash course on love, gender, and the awkward choreography of being human. Revenge of the Black Best Friend is a brand new CBC Gem original comedy series from award-winning playwright, host, producer, and CBC personality Amanda Parris, puts a spotlight – and surreal twist – on the familiar tropes, stereotypes and typecasting that's been forced on Black actors. The entire six-part series debuted on the free CBC Gem streaming service on Thursday, March 31, 2022. It also had its international premiere as an official selection in the Short Form competition at the prestigious Cannes International Series Festival (Canneseries) April 1-6, 2022. From dismissed divas to sidelined superheroes, the series follows Dr. Toni Shakur (played by The Porter's Oluniké Adeliyi), a self-help guru whose mission is to cancel the entertainment industry's reliance on token Black characters…that is before she gets cancelled herself. This highly irreverent series is partially inspired by Robert Townsend's iconic ‘80s spoof Hollywood Shuffle, and is in the spirit of contemporary offerings like Atlanta, Random Acts of Flyness and Sorry to Bother You. Revenge of the Black Best Friend is directed by Thyrone Tommy, Ian Keteku and Jerome Kruin. Motion (Co-Executive Producer, Writer) and Julian De Zotti (Executive Producer) are also part of the production team. It stars Oluniké Adeliyi, Cara Ricketts, Araya Mengesha, Dwain Murphy, Ashton James, Julian De Zotti and Jenny Young with special appearances from Andrea Lewis, Tyrone Edwards and Mark Strong. Geri and Terence Nance — creator, writer, director, and co-star of the new HBO Late Night series RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS — talk about the trauma in - and of - making art, how his writing takes place before he opens Final Draft, and how we can find success by looking in each other's faces. Terrence Nance is a writer, director, actor, and musician. His 2012 feature film AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY premiered at Sundance and received a Gotham Independent Film Award. He was the recipient of a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship for his work. His latest project is the HBO late-night sketch comedy series RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS - a fluid, stream-of-consciousness response to the contemporary American mediascape. Each episode features a handful of interconnected vignettes which showcase an ensemble cast of emerging and established talent. The show is a mix of verité documentary, musical performances, surrealist melodrama and humorous animation. Nance and his collaborators weave together such themes as ancestral trauma, history, death, the singularity, romance and more. 0. San Francisco (met Daniel Herskedal) 1'55” 1. In this special episode, I address Black America, our grief, racial trauma and reclaiming our future.  Inspired by the recent incidents of police brutality,  Black America has been living in grief and sometimes fear while maintaining our normal lives.  Our endless experiences with discrimination, police brutality, prejudices, and microaggressions for centuries, has been something Black Americans experienced throughout generations.  Now, with protestors and destroyed property,  we are coming to an end of a toxic relationship.  Reclaiming our future involves gaining economic power and exercising our votes on a local level.  These are just two of many gestures we can make to create self-sufficiency and move to a brighter future.  I also explain things we can do today to make that change:   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Shopping/Directory:   webuyblack.com: a marketplace for black-owned businesses selling products from toiletries to professional services Spendefy.com:  the digital “Green Book” of black-owned businesses in your city or city you’re traveling to. To celebrate the release of Terence Nance's acclaimed HBO series Random Acts of Flyness, we thought we'd resurface his fantastic conversation with the inimitable Flying Lotus from last July. Here's that episode in its entirety; check it out. On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, two longtime friends who bridge the worlds of music and film – writer-director Terence Nance, who’s also a musician, and Steve Ellison, widely known as the recording artist Flying Lotus, whose supremely out-there debut feature film Kuso is out now – sit down for a chat. Over the course of their highly entertaining and unpredictable conversation, the pair talks about dick-stabbing, Steve’s traumatic first time getting tested for STDs, the unique mix of crude humor and transcendence in his work, their respective creative struggles, their greatest fears, and much more. For more filmmakers talking film and TV, visit Talkhouse Film at talkhouse.com/film. Subscribe now to stay in the loop about future Talkhouse Podcasts. We sit down this week with the incredibly multi-talented artist, director, and musician, Terence Nance, to get inside his head about things like his HBO series, Random Acts of Flyness, that airs out, in almost a stream-of-consciousness, many of today’s most salient issues like systemic racism, white privilege, gender, and masculinity. Not knowing it all is especially important to Terence’s work, “I think of making stuff as conversation; why would you get into a conversation if you knew where it was going to go? Why would it be interesting to talk to somebody if you knew exactly what they were going to say back to you?”. He also explains why honesty within his family and close relationships is what makes him feel the most vulnerable, but he goes there anyway so as to set an example to his nieces and nephews, and why he sees beauty as a scale of disarming people and emitting ease, rather than as an aesthetic quality. But most fascinating to us is how Terence unpacks attributes that we give to words such as unapologetic. “People have been using the word unapologetic a lot and I don't know that I have a relationship to that word because that means that I would have had some sort of expectation that I am to apologize for something...I've never felt any kind of dialogue with an audience or anybody making the show that made me feel like there was anything that would offend or necessitate an apology or a caveat of any kind.”

Didja miss us?  In all seriousness, Jack started a new job at CryptTV and was in heavy production mode which had us go dark for a time. I can only assume that'll be happening more frequently as Baby Pruner touches down.  But until then ... NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: CNN is doing a full-length documentary about Anthony Bourdain that will be released in theaters sometime in 2019. Season 3 of "Stranger Things" will take place in 1985 and obviously reference "Back to the Future," but according to David Harbour, the new season will also make multiple references to the movie "Fletch." Netflix has renewed both "GLOW" and "Anne with an E" for a third season. Netflix has canceled "The Joel McHale Show" and "The Break with Michelle Wolf." "Castle Rock" has been renewed for a second season on Hulu. "Knightfall" — History Channel's series about the Knights of the Templar — has been renewed for a second season and Mark Hamill is joining the cast.  USA has ordered a Jason Bourne TV series called "Treadstone." Production is set to begin in 2019. According to THR, "the first season will follow sleeper agents — none of them played by Matt Damon — across the globe as they're instructed to carry out deadly missions." Before it could even open, a "Rick and Morty" pop-up bar was shut down by Turner Broadcasting. You guys are in for a treat with this episode because A-lan is thinking through her experience as a woman and a creative on a higher level than most — but also doing so in a totally humble, down-to-earth, lovable wayShe is Stanford’s Interim Executive Director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts and so we talk about how she’s able to create institutional change with her role. A-lan explains the beauty lessons she inherited growing up in LA — from her Aunt who wore sisterlocs and Grandma who was a ‘silver fox’.We talk about her experience as a curvy woman, her self-confidence, and how she thinks about perception and representation when she’s casting roles for her film projects. The part of the conversation that really blew my mind: A-lan’s experience with natural childbirth and why she decided to opt-out of the hospital/ ‘business of birth’ to bring her daughter into the world. She was a young mother and she goes into how that impacted her experience of pregnancy too. We also talk about what actually goes down post-birth and alllll the things they don’t quite tell you. It's the Grindhouse, citizens! Our latest installment streams LIVE every Sunday at 6pm eastern as engineered by the Afronerd Radio machine.  Join your favorite podcasting crew as they wax about the following topics: director/musician, Terence Nance's Random Acts of Flyness (HBO) premiered this weekend and it appears to be picking up where Sorry to Bother You left off;  And speaking of STBY, the film's director is asserting that international distributors are passing on global showings because of the "Black films don't sell overseas" mantra; Chicago has its first First Wakandacon which is not only an ode to the Black Panther mythos but also Afro-futurism; EA Sports apologizes and promises an update to address the suspicious omission of Colin Kaepernick's name from their Madden NFL '19  soundtrack (spec. the YG song, "Big Bank");  FX CEO place blame squarely with Marvel for cancelling The Glover Brothers version of the highly anticipated Deadpool animated TV series;  a new CBR (Comic Book Resources) article highlights some of the most iconic Marvel arcs that can now be explored post the finalization of the Disney-Fox merger;  Luke Cage season 3 has not been confirmed by Netflix but is it simply that the writers are trying to come up with something compelling or is a Heroes for Hire iteration in the works featuring Danny Rand?;  actor, Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard for a new CBS All Access Star Trek streaming series;  Venture Bros S7 returns (finally) on Adult Swim; And lastly, Dburt may be warming up to Sony's solo Venom movie after seeing the latest trailer.  And what's this about an expanded backstory/mythology for symbiotic race?  Call in LIVE at 646-915-9620.

From plays and stand-up routines in front of his elementary school classmates; talent shows and statewide art competitions in middle school; to TV productions, and professional modeling gigs in high school and college, Stephen has always been a man of artistic expression. Upon graduating with honors in mass media/broadcasting from Hampton University, he began his professional career as a copier salesman in his native New York City. After a few years of door to door sales for Xerox Corp. by day and intense acting classes with famed coach Susan Batson by night, he received the fearful news that his mother had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Witnessing her fatal bout with the debilitating disease at the young age of 61 was the catalyst that thrust Stephen back into the artistic world. Having raised five children, the youngest of whom with Downs Syndrome, his mother never got the opportunity to fully express herself creatively. Armed with the memory of his mother, the blessing of his father, and the support of his tribe, Stephen soon left behind the perks of a steady paycheck, healthcare, and printing free headshots and scripts, to pursue acting full-time. After years of student/indie films, plays, film festival circuits, and continued study he developed a hard-earned reputation for solid work in drama, comedy, voice-over, and commercials #ByIndieMeansNecessary. His dedication has filled his resume with Law & Order SVU, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Political Animals, Blue Bloods, Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s Lewis & Clark, Luke Cage, among others. Most recently: Steve McQueen’s feature film Widows, Terence Nance's HBO series Random Acts of Flyness, Manhood (The National Black Theater), and the Cary Fukunaga helmed Netflix series Maniac. Follow Stephen's social media accounts for postings of his most recent work as Theodore TC Calvin in the 2018 reboot of Magnum P.I.
