So, how did I learn to sell effectively? It may surprise you, but the answer takes me back to my TV news reporter days - specifically, the man-on-the-street interviews that I had to do. Now, if you're not familiar, man-on-the-street interviews are when reporters approach random people in public to get their opinions on a story they're working on. In today's multi-generational and borderless world, study abroad programs are critical for introducing students to the world outside their university and even their country. They make up an integral part of the curriculum and the student undergraduate experience, and generally, students look back with very fond memories of their time abroad on their colleagues with whom they experienced these trips. Unfortunately, despite all the “glamour shots” and publicity surrounding these trips, there is a dark side. You typically don't hear about the deaths that occur because universities have not properly vetted the vendors for these programs. Or the risks that students can be exposed to because a low-cost vendor or the tour guide takes students on a dangerous mountain road because their previously scheduled train didn't run on time. But these happen, and when they do, they expose both the students and the University to unnecessary risk. To learn more about study abroad programs, Dr. Drumm McNaughton spoke with Robyn Symon, producer of Emmy Award-winning documentaries and biopics on such notable celebrities as Robin Williams and Michael Jackon, Robyn has spent over 20 years documenting events in the lives of people, and her latest project, Trip of a Lifetime, focuses on the study abroad industry and how we can keep our students safe during these important programs. Podcast Highlights Inquire as to how your programs have been vetted for safety. Risk management is important, even with the study abroad programs. Do not assume that other countries have the same safety regulations that we do in the US. Don't shortchange culture because there will always be resistance that could jeopardize it. Do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. These programs are very important for students' education, growth, and maturity, but they need to be vetted properly from A-Z to ensure the safety of all participants and the liability to the University. Guest Bio   Robyn Symon is a two-time Emmy award-winning Writer/Producer/Director/Editor. Robyn joined PBS in 1991 after four years as a TV News Reporter in Texas. At PBS, Robyn produced documentaries, public affairs programs, and TV series, including “Florida!” which also ran for six seasons on The Travel Channel, the PBS Pledge Special, “Boleros: Unforgettable Love Song” featuring top Latin musical stars and the series “Voices of Vision,” hosted by NPR's Scott Simon focusing on the work of non-profit organizations throughout the world. She has produced national TV specials on Robin Williams and Michael Jackson and an investigative program on the opioid epidemic. Robyn debuted in the indie film arena in 2007, producing, directing, and editing the feature documentary “Transformation: The Life & Legacy of Werner Erhard,” about the controversial pioneer of the self-help industry streaming on Netflix. Since then, Robyn has written, produced, and directed documentaries, including “Hedy & Yumi: Crossing the Bridge,” about a holocaust couple turned relationship experts, “Behind the Blue Veil,” a documentary film about the nomadic Tuaregs caught in the middle the War on Terror and “Do No Harm” about the silent epidemic of suicide and burnout among medical students and physicians. In addition to two Emmys, Robyn has been honored with numerous national awards for writing and producing, including 3 Telly awards, 2 NABJ awards, and honors by both the Associated Press and United Press International. This almost got me fired.  I was hired as a TV News Reporter for NBC before I even officially had my college diploma.  My tenacity, determination, and a false sense of confidence allowed me to beat out thousands of others for the job.  I thought my education and four TV internships prepared me for this job…but doing it in real life for real pay was a completely different level of pressure.  The deadlines were insane! I had to find interview subjects, do the on-camera interview, verify sources, write the script, edit the piece, and record promos for the story in a matter of a couple of hours…there was no time for perfection.  While I was barely putting together one story by the hard deadline, the other more experienced reporters had THREE stories done! After 6 weeks My News Director (Boss) pulled me aside and said,” Carter, you've gotta start pulling your weight around here…you need to work faster.” I was shell-shocked. The only way I could do that was by not caring if it was perfect, and just trusting my initial gut instinct.  Given my lack of professional journalism experience, I didn't exactly have that confidence yet.  So I had to trust it anyway or get fired. No one noticed the difference between my highly perfectionistic news story to the (what I felt like was sub-par) three “get-er-done” stories.  Your over-thinking and false belief that it needs to be perfect for it to pay off, have you bottlenecked in your business.  Unless you're a surgeon, getting it done is always a solid business plan.  Waiting and obsessing over it to avoid any potential mistakes, ends up helping no one.   Often times the mistakes that do happen are the biggest blessings of all (even in the medical world).  THE NEW 6-Month ProjectME Mastermind Experience:  CLICK AND APPLY HERE  Pre-launching pricing won't last long, and it's WILD! As a CBS reporter in Los Angeles, Erica Mandy had a thriving career ahead of her in TV news. But in 2017 she quit her job and launched her own daily news podcast. It's called The Newsworthy, and every morning it gives listeners a 12-minute rundown of the most important headlines. It also delivers weekend longform interviews with newsmakers. After four years in operation, it now generates over 800,000 downloads per month and has a growing team. I spoke to Erica about why she made the jump from TV to podcasts, how she found her audience, and whether the daily news podcast space is becoming saturated.

Are you thinking of going back to work, going into business, or switching careers during or after a divorce? Nobody can teach you how to navigate this better than Marlo Lyons. With 20 years of experience under her belt, she has transitioned careers 4x now - from TV News Reporter to Entertainment Lawyer, to HR Business Partner to Executive and Career Coach, and now as a Book Author. Tune in and join us in this powerful episode Switching Careers After Divorce with Marlo Lyons. Top points you'll discover:  ✔️ Sure, you haven't been back in the workforce in eight to twelve years, now what? Marlo Lyons shares that people get confused with being stuck versus being lost. "We can make any choice we want. It's really about not knowing what to do. Now, that's different, but remember - you have worked. You don't want to say domestic engineer or conflict resolution specialist in your resume. You have to go out and be willing to relearn and get those resources."  ✔️ Shift that fear into curiosity. It takes that one person or wake-up moment to get out of your fears and know there are possibilities. Limiting beliefs hold us all back, especially if you are in the depths of despair and pain and hurt and do not know how to get out of the quicksand that can swallow you whole. ✔️ Be OK without dumping all your accomplishments in your resumé. "When you look through the lens of the new job, look at job descriptions, what's required, and only those skills that apply to the new job. You don't want to muddy up your resume with everything you've done. I see this every day when every day resumes." ✔️ Define your values and translate them into skills. When your values are fulfilled, you are engaged, excited, and wanting to work. "So dream big like you don't get to choose. You don't get to tell me that not having enough money or not going back to school and all the excuses can keep you from what truly interests you. Dig deeper and go figure out what that is." ✔️ Maximize hiring opportunities worldwide. Companies are more open to people transferring their skills because they can't find enough workers. And as long as you position yourself well and show that you can do it, there are much more opportunities open than before. They're not going to find that person with 20 years' experience.  Marlo Lyons has spent more than 20 years inspiring, motivating, and empowering people to excel in their careers and businesses. Marlo's career is fascinating - she transferred her skills to change careers from TV news reporter for more than a decade, to entertainment lawyer for another decade, to HR Business Partner in both entertainment and the medical technology industries, to executive/career coach and strategist. She currently uses her coaching skills as a strategic HR business partner, working with senior leaders, and as a strategic career coach to clients globally. Her HR, career coaching, and leadership expertise combined with her own personal career transitions have provided her great insight into how to give each job seeker a strategic pathway forward, whether that path means obtaining a new job at the right company, transitioning to a new career, recovering from termination, or re-entering the workforce after a long absence. That is why she has now put all of her experiences and clients she has coached along with a step-by-step playbook on how to do it into a new book titled Wanted -> A New Career, The Definitive Playbook for Transitioning to a New Career or Finding Your Dream Job. Today on the Podcast, Embracing the Process. If you're anything like most highly ambitious and multi-passionate Creative Entrepreneurial women then you, too, likely want to be "the best" on day one (or at least the top 10)! And if everything could happen, yesterday, you'd be OK with that as well. Don't lie. (I know you AND I got you! Heck, I AM you. So, HELLO, sister-friend.) Cuz all you're life you've known you were meant for something more. Chomping at the bit, you're hungry with drive and determination. Always have been; always will be. But doors, too often, have been closed. And because of that, maybe a lot of things (in a lot of different areas) have been hard won. Maybe it's taken a whole lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get where you are; to overcome what you've had to overcome. Maybe life's dealt some pretty brutal blows. But despite it all, you're still here. Passionate. Purposeful. And PERSEVERING! Because history has taught you, "I AM more than this." And so, whether out of self-preservation and necessity or your own creative hustle, you're a self-starter, a risk-taker, a soul made of gumption and grit. But grace? But patience? Maybe not so much. Until now. Enter my Conversation with Intrapreneur, Keisha Courtney ... A self-proclaimed Type A and Yoga Skeptic, Keisha now finds balance on and off the mat as a lifelong learning student, teacher, and human rights advocate. Having volunteered to end trafficking in India, at a shelter for children in Kenya, and with a human rights organization in Cambodia — Keisha’s trauma informed training (as well as her celebration of women’s sensuality and body positivity) is one that resonates deeply with my own background as both a survivor and an agent of change. And I cannot wait for you all to meet her, here in LA, at a future workshop or retreat. But balance, grace, and a love for the process hadn't always come easily even to this Emmy winning, former, TV News reporter whose always preferred to have her "ducks in a row." Through launching her own side hustle, The Driven Yogi, and being awarded the Pole Sport Organization Goldengate Level 2 Champion — she found it: the permission to breathe and embrace the process. In this Episode We Talk About: • Why women must champion each other (even when going after the same dreams) • What to do when you've outgrown your friends and career • How to cultivate new community with people who are driven • The Creative Direction that comes with serving others • Why the life of a TV News Reporter is not as glamorous as it seems • How to watch out for "either or" thinking and the value of blending disciplines • What to do when things don't go your way + How to motivate yourself • Why taking a break won't make you fall behind but will increase your creativity • What's problematic about making choices simply by convenience • The 3 reasons you need a shared experience with an in-person group • How to be resourceful no matter what you're circumstance or circle • When she first learned the lesson of "closed mouths don't get fed" • The #1 thing that gave her confidence to launch The Driven Yogi • Talking about Self-Care + How to teach with trauma informed leadership • Why Intrapreneurs are 33% less likely to fail when they launch their business full time • Navigating ignorant stigmas & when she decided to share ALL of herself • The #1 best piece of advice her mentor ever gave her for life on & off the mat   If you've attended a live Dreamcatchers District event in LA, coached with me privately, been invited to one of our secret virtual masterclasses, or applied for an immersive planning retreat weekend and mastermind — then you already know how much allowing yourself to start, to be an awkward beginner, to outgrow your current circumstance or circle all plays into our practices for inner and outer Creative Direction. Writing like a Pro in the business world seems like a huge undertaking that is easier said than done. Luckily, we have Danny H. Rubin as our guest today. Danny Rubin is “THE writing guy.” Danny has studied communications since college and has worked as a TV News Reporter and Consultant and has come back around to what he loves most, which is writing. He uses his greatest strength to teach practical writing instruction for the business world. From writing to apply for jobs to writing to start a business from scratch, Danny offers his writing advice as the writing expert in the business world. One of the key takeaways from the episode is viewing the job search as an expectations game where employers are going to expect you to do X, but you’re going to learn how to do Y. Why, you ask? Well, while everyone else is doing X, you’re going to put that little bit of extra effort it takes to do Y. This is your opportunity to do something another way to stand out from the crowd of job-seekers. All Y is, is a change in the way that you think about what you’re writing. We have all been so conditioned to write a resume and cover letter the same way. So, a hiring manager is going to expect that same template from every candidate. But, Danny is here to walk you through a process that will show you how to go about writing those pieces in a smarter, more strategic way. You will see more results when you know how to be interesting when describing yourself in your stories. Your writing should highlight details of your experience that will enhance your overall platform. Listen to the podcast to learn more about the power of telling YOUR story of success in your cover letter. Danny will help you learn how to write to command attention, prove your ability, and leave a lasting impression on the reader.   What You Will Learn The importance of brevity – Why keeping your writing short and concise is imperative in business communications The importance of writing differently and how to stand out in your writing to get noticed and open doors How to write a powerful Linkedin Profile How to apply for a job when a company isn’t even hiring

As a Certified Master Hypnotherapist, NLP Master Practitioner, Huna Practitioner, and Reconnective Healing Practitioner, Belinda is effective at getting results and enhancing performance in people’s lives.  She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. in English and Spanish.  After obtaining a Lifetime Elementary Teaching Credential at Cal State at LA, she taught third grade for five years in Puerto Rico and Los Angeles.  She played the character Snow White at Disneyland, was a TV News Reporter for KABC Channel 7 in Hollywood and worked on the staff of Senator Charles H. Percy (Illinois) in Washington, D.C. Belinda received her training in HUNA on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Huna means “secret” and the secrets were hidden in the chants.  The ancient Hawaiian chants became part of her life.  They bring down the Higher Self (Aumakua/5th Dimension) that is in all of us.  These ancient healing techniques flourished at a time when there was no mental illness on the islands, before the missionaries arrived.  “As a Huna Practitioner, I’ve been ordained to bring back these ancient healing secrets.  Inner empowerment is our birthright. We are all powerful spiritual beings, connected as one.” Click here to visit the show notes page!    Like this episode? Please leave an honest rating on iTunes.
