She was diagnosed as having a genetic anomaly which gives her a seeming superpower of not being able to sense pain, be it a head ache , a stomach ache or even the pain of child birth. The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Debate Keeps Pecking Away Every so often, there's a claim that the ivory-billed woodpecker is back from the dead. Pixelated videos go viral, blurry photos make the front page, and birders flock to the woods to get a glimpse of the ghost bird. Last week, a controversial paper claimed there's reason to believe that the lost bird lives. The authors say they have evidence, including video footage, that the bird still flies. The paper is ruffling feathers among the birding and research community. This debate has been going on for decades, but the American Birding Association categorizes the bird as “probably or actually extinct,” and its last verified sighting was in 1944. So is it any different this time? And what do we make of the claims that keep cropping up? Guest host Flora Lichtman talks all things ivory-billed with Michael Retter, editor of the magazines North American Birds and Special Issues of Birding, from the American Birding Association.   Tracking Pain In Your Brain When you stub your toe, that pain is registered by the peripheral nervous system. It shoots off signals that travel up your spinal cord and to your brain, where the signals tell you, “Hey, your toe hurts. Take care of it.” But chronic pain—defined as lasting three months or more—is processed differently, and your nerves are constantly firing pain signals to your brain. Chronic pain is complex, and a lot of its basics are still unknown. But a new study from this week discovered another piece of the pain puzzle: the brain signals that cause chronic pain and the region they are processed in. Researchers hope that this is the first step in developing a brain stimulation therapy that can intercept those chronic pain signals and bring relief to patients. Guest host and SciFri director Charles Bergquist talks with lead author Dr. Prasad Shirvalkar, neurologist and associate professor at the University of California San Francisco, about this new paper.   What Can We Learn From A Woman Who Feels No Pain? There are a select few humans that can't feel any pain. Really. One of those people is Jo Cameron, who didn't experience any pain during childbirth or need any painkillers after a hip replacement. She's also never been anxious or afraid. Researchers have been studying Jo Cameron and her brain in an effort to better understand her sensory experience. This week, researchers published a new study that looks at the genes and mutations responsible for Jo's pain free existence. They hope to use what they learn to come up with better pain management treatments for the rest of us. Guest host and Science Friday Senior Producer Charles Berquist talks with Andrei Okorokov, associate professor at the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research at the University of College London, about this fascinating new research.   Turning To Space While Processing Grief When astronomers Michelle Thaller and Andrew Booth met, it was love at first sight. The couple married in 1994, becoming a power couple in the world of space and physics research. In 2019, the couple received shocking news: Booth was diagnosed with cancer in the brain. He passed away within a year of his diagnosis. The death of a partner is one of the most devastating things a person can go through. Thaller felt unmoored, and like Earth was not her planet anymore. To help her move forward, Thaller turned to the universe for solace. In 2019 ontdekte een team van Engelse onderzoekers dat een zeldzame mutatie in het FAAH-OUT gen er - samen met een minder zeldzame mutatie in het FAAH-gen - bij een vrouw in Schotland voor zorgt dat ze vrijwel nooit pijn ervaart, zelfs niet bij operaties. Ook voelt ze vrijwel geen angst.   In een nieuw onderzoek zijn ze nu gaan kijken hoe de biologie hierachter precies in elkaar steekt. De hoop is dat het leidt tot nieuwe pijnbehandelingen en belangrijke informatie over wondherstel.  Ze zagen onder andere dat het FAAH-OUT-gen - waarvan ooit werd gedacht dat het geen functie heeft - de expressie van het FAAH-gen sterk beïnvloedt. Bij Jo Cameron, de Schotse vrouw die geen pijn voelt, zorgen mutaties ervoor dat FAAH minder sterk aanstaat. Daardoor wordt er minder van bepaalde eiwitten aangemaakt. En FAAH is weer gelinkt aan het mechanisme dat betrokken is bij pijn, stemming en geheugen.  Terwijl de mutaties er bij Jo Cameron voor zorgen dat FAAH wordt afgeremd, zagen ze in hun studie ook nog bijna 800 genen die juist sterker aanstonden en 348 anderen die juist uitstonden. Sommige van deze afwijkingen troffen moleculaire paden die in verband staan met wondheling. Ook een gen dat gelinkt is aan stemmingsregulatie en eentje die van invloed is op pijnstillende stofjes in het lichaam gedroegen zich anders.   De onderzoekers zien hun ontdekkingen als een belangrijke stap richting het volledig in kaart brengen van de moleculaire paden die worden beïnvloed door FAAH-OUT, maar het is zeker niet de laatste die nodig is voordat het nieuwe behandelingen of medicijnen mogelijk maakt. Tee Talk Proper Golfing Podcast with Jo Cameron and Julian Mellor

In a very moving story Michelle talks to Kimberley Shaw who has turned her grief at losing her stillborn daughter Sarah into a way of helping other parents who have lost a baby to miscarriage, stillbirth or neo-natal death. Kimberly set up a charity called Zaagi and, using the material from donated wedding dresses, she creates beautiful nestling blankets, wraps and blessing gowns so bereaved parents can wrap their tiny children. We also hear from Ross Nixon who – when he's not on shift as a Highland fireman – volunteers for Spokes for Folks, taking the elderly on tours of Inverness in a specially designed trike. Plus we've an astonishing story from Jo Cameron who doesn't feel pain but didn't realise she was special or different until recently when she needed a hip operation! She can even eat a Scotch Bonnet raw without feeling anything more than ‘a little bit of warmth'.

Jo Cameron is the woman who feels no pain.  Jo is now 71 and scientists are just finding out why she has gone through her whole life experiencing very little pain.  She would often cut herself or burn herself and wouldn't notice until she saw blood or smelled burning flesh. Rachel Feltman, editor at Popular Science, joins us for what makes Jo Cameron feel no pain, a gene mutation that scientists hope could help others in the future. Next, these measles cases are getting out of hand.  The number of cases so far this year is nearing the total for all of 2018 with six states reporting outbreaks.  It has become such a public health hazard that Rockland County, NY has banned unvaccinated minors from entering public spaces for 30 days. Rachel Becker, reporter at the Verge, joins us for why the measles have gotten out of control and why these types of bans may become more common. Finally, a follow up to the lawsuit against Monsanto and its parent company Bayer. Edwin Hardeman claimed that years of using their Roundup weedkiller gave him non-Hodgkin lymphoma.  A jury decided that the product did give him cancer, and they also just decided Bayer was liable in the case and owes him $80 million.  Sara Randazzo, reporter for the WSJ, joins us to wrap up the case.
