Episode 2465 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich welcomes author and Certified Nutrition Specialist Amy Berger and they discuss getting the right advice, stalls, and more. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS   YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Getting the Right Advice Vinnie tries to avoid guest experts who sell programs. (2:00) He feels some of them become gimmicky to sell their program. They discuss whether their efforts to correct misinformation and encourage low-carb is getting through to the masses. (5:00) The Ketogenic diet is therapeutic for so many conditions, but snake-oil types of “influencers” and other social media platforms negatively affect the message. The negative messaging prevents people from getting accurate information. Amy and Vinnie agree that it gets discouraging, but the importance and the success stories keep them going. (11:00) They chat a bit about regenerative farming. (16:30) At what point did the information change from “eat meat” to low-fat, high-carb—like pasta? (21:00) The low-carb way of eating is good and works with how the body is meant to. (25:00) Low-carb and the ketogenic approach work in tune with the body. People who don't understand biochemical science probably shouldn't be in charge of making policy about health. (26:00) What bothers Amy the most is when medical practitioners who should know better are giving bad advice, or closing themselves off to accurate information. People have trouble getting the right advice. If you want the benefits of low-carb, you have to stay low-carb. (30:00) Amy emphasizes that there are variations that can be done depending on the individual; however, that doesn't mean eating things like junk food. (32:00) Other people must stay strictly ketogenic to treat a medical condition. Adjusting the Mindset They address the idea of food restriction. (36:00) Restriction is in the eye of the beholder; when you are satisfied with real food, it doesn't feel restricting. Amy reviews the topics of her three books. (44:00) She is working on a fourth book about thyroid health. You can find all three books in   here: (with Dr Eric Westman) ,   and Vinnie asks about supplementation and thyroid health. (48:00) She reviews what may help. Many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be debilitating; she knows this firsthand. Depression, even apathy, can be a serious symptom. Vinnie asks her opinion about weight loss stalls. (51:00) Connect with her through her website and on YouTube. Look for Vinnie's NSNG® VIP Community and sign up for the waitlist! Go to to sign up! I am honored to reconnect with Amy Berger today! (She was with me before, in Episode 108, in 2020.) Amy has a Master's degree in human nutrition. She is also a certified nutrition specialist and a US Air Force veteran. She is the author of many books, including a co-authored book with Dr. Eric Westman, called End Your Carb Confusion. Amy is a wealth of information! She specializes in helping people do “Keto Without the Crazy”, and keeping things sane and simple- a message that is sadly under-represented in our post-pandemic time frame.  Amy joins me today to dive into reducing nutrition-related fear, worry, and anxiety. We speak about food addiction, binge eating, and orthorexia, the emerging trend in medicine of metabolic psychiatry, brain health, blood sugar, different types of fuel substrates, and weight-loss resistance. We also get into bio-hacking gadgets, the scale, and the value of food budgets.  Amy's YouTube channel is one of my favorites, and her brand and business are full of down-to-earth messaging. I hope you enjoy listening to my conversation with her as much as I did recording it! Stay tuned for more! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How Amy came up with her methodology of “keto without the crazy”. What can we do to overcome nutrition-related fear and anxiety? How Amy helps people navigate food addiction, binge eating, and orthorexia. The most effective way to overcome metabolic syndrome, obesity, type-2 diabetes, or PCOS. The importance of understanding the extent to which blood sugar and insulin problems affect cognition and the brain. How common mental health disorders associated with metabolic health, like depression, anxiety, or bipolar, can be easily corrected by changing one's diet. How ketones can help improve mental health and clarity. Some less common reasons for weight loss resistance. Why do we sometimes need to step back and slow down? The pros and cons of bio-hacking devices. Why it is best not to weigh ourselves every day. Nutrients essential for mitochondrial health.  Bio: Amy Berger, MS, CNS, is a U.S. Air Force veteran and Certified Nutrition Specialist who helps people do “Keto Without the Crazy.”™ She writes about a wide range of health and nutrition-related topics, such as insulin, weight loss, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, thyroid function, and more. Keto without the crazy. Low-carb and keto-oriented nutritionist Amy Berger's goal is to provide information about the keto diet without the fuss of different apps, spending too much, or weighing every molecule of food. Her knowledge of low-carb diet started during her college years, thanks to Dr. Atkins and his book New Diet Revolution. She was already practicing low-carb diet when she took her master's degree in human nutrition. Already aware of its effects and benefits, it prompted her to delve deeper into its relation to different metabolic syndromes, Alzheimer's disease, thyroid, and depression. In this episode, she shares the life-changing information she got from her studies on Alzheimer's disease as her graduate thesis, the heartbreak of seeing people misdiagnosed for decades, and the tips she has on how to get lab tests even without a doctor's consent.Quick Guide:01:10 Introduction05:49 Keto without crazy07:00 People may not need the same keto diet11:25 Cut the carbs15:39 Common symptoms that a low-carb approach can help resolve21:41 Symptoms that you're getting insufficient fats24:17 The unconventional nutrition education27:43 The Alzheimer's Antidote34:21 Diet and lifestyle affect the brain too36:53 Thyroid problems and depression47:36 Misinformation related to health and nutritionGet to know our guest: Amy Berger is a Certified Nutrition Specialist who offers private consultations and creates online courses about keto. Episode 2206 - On this Friday's show, Vinnie Tortorich welcomes back Dr. Eric Westman and the two discuss the benefits of fat as fuel, sugar addiction, Big Food, Dr. Westman's new book about ending carb confusion, and more. [libsyn_podcast id=24590337] PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS END YOUR CARB CONFUSION Vinnie welcomes Dr. Eric Westman back to the show and asks him about the Duke Keto Medical Clinic. (1:15) Keto is shifting your body to fat-burning and there are so many benefits to it; Eric gives an example. (8:00) Eating a keto diet doesn't have to be expensive; there are ways to find deals on meat purchases. Many people find that they end up eating less food because they are more satisfied. Vinnie chats about his interest in building lean muscle mass when he was younger and noticed that bodybuilders would get "cut" by eating protein and fat, not carbs. (15:30) Vinnie then asks Eric what nutrition training was like when he was in medical school and how it's progressed. (17:00) Both men agree that Dr. Stephen Phinney (of Virta Health) has been a huge influence on what they know about a ketogenic way of eating. The conversation turns to fat as fuel for long distances and some of the current successful athletes doing it. (21:30) Even though there are many examples of these athletes, there is still so much doubt that it's even "possible". Vinnie asks Eric why there are so many dietitians and other health and science professionals resistant to doing further studies and promoting keto as a solution. (30:50) NIH is still stuck on CICO (calories in, calories out), even though it's been proven it doesn't work and is not sustainable. Eric mentions that funding is a big issue. Ending carb confusion is the goal. Vinnie and Eric agree that there is no diabetes in a world without carbs. (35:15) They then talk about sugar addiction needs to be looked at seriously. (40:45) The chat about autoimmune conditions and how they are affected by carbs. Big Food companies hire scientists to formulate food to create addictions to them so you'll be a repeat customer. Eric mentions "", which is an online membership where you can get coached in a low-carb lifestyle. Vinnie then asks Eric to discuss his book, "", written by him, Dr. Amy Berger, and others, and it has a cookbook that provides even more options. Vinnie and Eric have a lot to say about Dr. Tro Kalayjian and how his approach to patients is making great strides in actually healing people. (1:03:50) Vinnie thanks Dr. Westman for his participation in both FAT documentaries because they are helping save lives! Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. Amy Berger is a Certified Nutrition Specialist, author of multiple books on nutrition, and U.S. Air Force Veteran. She is also the founder of TuitNutrition.com—a nutrition blog and health coaching website. Her areas of interest include using low carb and ketogenic diets as nutritional therapies for diabetes (both type 2 and type 1), obesity, PCOS, migraines, acid reflux/GERD, cardiovascular disease, and neurological and neurodegenerative disorders (such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy). In this discussion, Brian and Amy talk about solving thyroid problems, treating depression with diet, getting past weight-loss stalls, stress eating and other emotional factors that cause people to eat more, the great value of getting enough quality sleep, why it is not advisable to overemphasize diet to the detriment of mental or emotional health, finding an effective balance between restriction and liberality with your diet, discovering the root cause of your poor eating habits, and making realistic goals. Life's Best Medicine According to Amy: “I think we take for granted the importance of physical contact—not just sexual contact, but just hugging, holding hands, touching somebody on the arm. That human connection—physically and emotionally. We can't do life alone; we need other people. It is a blessing to have friends and family.” Thank you for listening. People are being diagnosed younger and younger with Alzheimer's disease. Currently, we don't have a meaningful treatment for a disease that affects someone worldwide every three seconds. So what can we do to deal with this Alzheimer's epidemic? Today, I talk to certified nutrition specialist, Amy Berger, about how fuelling the brain with the right foods can reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease from ever developing. Toney left his career in wind farm energy about ten years ago to become a full time caregiver for his mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and lost the ability to live independently.  Toney has dedicated his energies to finding ways to manage his mother's symptoms while charting new pathways of care after losing his father to the same horrible condition years before.Toney tried all the conventional treatments and dietary guidelines commonly prescribed by modern medicine, but was watching his mother rapidly decline in brain and physical health.  The diet the medical community promoted to treat Alzheimer's not only seemed to make the symptoms worse, but also caused Toney's mom to balloon in weight and have worsened bi-markers associated to overall health.Toney did his own research, put his mother on a high fat ketogenic lifestyle, which Toney and his wife also follow, and subsequently saw marked improvements in his mother's cognitive function and emotional health as well as body composition.  Toney now advocates for people to explore the possibilities to use a ketogenic diet as a possible component in the treatment protocol when it comes to brain health and degenerative brain conditions. To follow Toney Niko, check out the links below:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wtoney.nikolatsopoulosInstagram: @thekdclifeBooks Mentioned on the episode:The Vegetarian Myth  by Lierre Keith: https://amzn.to/3x5VtASThe Paleo Cardiologist by Dr. Jack Wolfson: https://amzn.to/32sqRv8The Carnivore Cure by Judy Cho: https://amzn.to/3sA9SlnProducts mentioned on the show:KETO CHOW: http://shop.ketochow.xyz/?aff=81&ref=carriebrown  (10% discount)Redmond's Real Salt: https://shop.redmond.life?afmc=carriebrown  Code: carriebrown (15% discount)Bulk Supplements Beef Protein Isolate: https://amzn.to/2Q7G5U5Anthony's Collagen Powder: https://amzn.to/3tz8NM1Recipes Mentioned on the show:SUPER MOTHER CLUCKER BURGERS: https://carriebrown.com/archives/37806POWER PORKIES DRY CHILI BURGERS: https://carriebrown.com/archives/37804Other Podcast Episodes mentioned:The Fatty Joe Show featuring Nina Teicholz: https://carriebrown.com/archives/38960The Fatty Joe Show featuring Amy Berger: https://carriebrown.com/archives/38950The Fatty Joe Show featuring Jessyca Reynolds: https://carriebrown.com/archives/38944The Fatty Joe Show featuring Siobhan Huggins: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-fatty-joe-show/id1531503734#episodeGuid=105fbff8-9dc8-43b3-8741-22d62b64add4The Keto Man's Club Featuring Toney Niko: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/keto-mans-club-podcast/id1464919105?i=1000516571073https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/keto-mans-club-podcast/id1464919105?i=1000517757952 Be sure to rate, subscribe and leave a comment! To support the show and gain access to private groups, rewards, swag, and become a Kitchen or Fatty Joe Show Rockstar, use these links:http://www.patreon.com/thefattyjoeshowor http://www.patreon.com/carriebrownCheck out our website at http://www.thefattyjoeshow.comIf you want to sport some Fatty Joe Show swag like t-shirts coffee mugs and other cool items, go to:https://www.zazzle.com/collections/the_fatty_joe_show-119044829655147361?rf=238386382098264295For recipes, articles, product discounts, Cookbooks, and Cooking Masterclasses go to: http://www.carriebrown.comCarrie Brown Masterclasses:

"Now where did I put my keys? .... Do I need to be somewhere? ........Ummm.......... Have we met before? ....." Ever been in those kinds of situations? You've probably experienced these moments of short-term memory loss and brain fog. It's as if someone hijacked your intelligence and replaced it with the mind of a fruit fly - just a blank stare   No matter the age, everyone is susceptible to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases   It's thought that forgetfulness and slow thinking is a natural side-effect of aging. However, it's not pre-determined or guaranteed.   New research is showing that neurodegeneration is an issue of the brain not getting enough energy. Alzheimer's is now being referred to as type-3 diabetes, which makes it a metabolic disease. You can protect yourself against Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or any other similar condition   That's the topic of today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. I'm Siim Land and our guest is Amy Berger MD. She's a researcher and the author of the book The Alzheimer's Antidote.   We're going to talk about: What's the current state of Alzheimer's research What causes Alzheimer's and cognitive decline Does the brain need glucose for fuel? The scary consequences of losing your cognition Which genes predispose you to have Alzheimer's How to protect yourself against Alzheimer's and cognitive decline Which signs indicate symptoms of Alzheimer's And much more...   To support this podcast, then I'd appreciate if you could leave us a review on iTunes and follow me on social media.     Here are the links to the podcast on all platforms Link to the Video Podcast on YouTube Link to the Audio Podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Download mp3 Here's a link to Amy's book The Alzheimer's Antidote   Based on research, maintaining stable blood sugar and insulin is critical for brain health. That's why I'm eating a low carb ketogenic diet and incorporate some intermittent fasting into my day.
