In this episode of the Connected Leadership podcast Olympic mini-series, Andy Lopata welcomes Aaron Phipps, MBE. Aaron is a Great Britain wheelchair rugby athlete and Paralympic gold medalist. After losing his legs and most of his fingers to meningitis at age 15, Aaron began his athletic journey with a 10-kilometre fundraising wheelchair race. He competed in two London Marathons, finishing fourth in 2009. Joining the GB Wheelchair Rugby squad, he scored over half of his team's points at the 2012 London Paralympics. In 2016, Aaron climbed Mount Kilimanjaro using a specially adapted off-road wheelchair to raise funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation and the Shaw Trust.  Aaron shares his experiences with the Paralympic Games, describing the intense anticipation leading up to the event and the feeling of reality setting in as the games begin. He compares the build-up to a giant island looming on the horizon, with athletes approaching it in their "little boats." Aaron explains how athletes reach peak fitness and then focus on rest and recovery in the weeks leading up to the games. He highlights the importance of managing energy levels and avoiding injuries during this crucial time. Aaron recounts his life-changing experience with meningococcal septicaemia at the age of 15, detailing the rapid progression of the illness and the resulting amputations. He emphasises the importance of resilience and the critical role played by medical professionals in his recovery. Recovering from the amputations and a year in hospital, Aaron acknowledges the challenges of feeling self-conscious and navigating social interactions. But he emphasises the support of his parents and friends in helping him adapt and live a normal life. His illness had a great impact on his outlook on life. He acknowledges that nearly dying gave him a profound perspective on mortality and made him more appreciative of the simple things in life. He highlights the importance of gratitude and positivity in overcoming challenges. Andy and Aaron discuss his journey into wheelchair rugby, which he describes as a "real leveller" and a transformative experience. He recounts how seeing other athletes with even more severe disabilities inspired him to push his own limits and embrace his potential. Aaron emphasises the importance of giving back to others and using his platform to inspire those facing similar challenges. He shares stories about mentoring young athletes and connecting with people who have been impacted by life-changing illnesses. Aaron credits the London 2012 Paralympics with shifting public perceptions of disability. He highlights the impact of Channel 4's "Superhumans" campaign and the satirical comedy show "The Last Leg" on normalising disability and promoting inclusivity. Aaron concludes by encouraging listeners to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new challenges. He emphasises the importance of living life to the fullest and creating lasting memories. James Brown is an athlete, inventor, social entrepreneur, multi-Paralympian gold medal winner  - and climate activist.  There was a time when James was known most for his astonishing achievements across many sports. Between 1980 and 2015, he took part in no less than five Paralympic Games (winter and summer) as well as eighteen World Championship events. His range of disciplines was extraordinary: they included track running, cross-country skiing, triathlon, swimming, road/track cycling and guide-running. He has several Paralympic Gold medals, was holder of the 800m World Record for eight years and has three other World Firsts to his name, including being the first registered blind person to compete in a World Track Masters cycling event at the velodrome in Manchester. In 2018, everything changed for James when his daughter - then at university - broke down in front of him in a cafe in Exeter and explained all she had been reading about the climate and ecological emergency.  James wept with her, but she offered hope in the shape of the newly formed Extinction Rebellion, and the possibility that non-violent direct action might help foment change. James committed to being at her side in whatever actions she took and within weeks, they were walking arm in arm to the blocking of the five bridges that were the first London Extinction Rebellion action. Since then, James has been arrested 13 times for his non-violent actions (once for spraying chalk paint on the road outside DEFRA in Bristol where it was raining so hard the chalk was washing off as they sprayed it one and was gone long before the arrest process was complete). Most recently, he spent two and a half months in Wandsworth prison for the action that propelled him to climate-activist super-stardom - when he climbed onto a plane at City Airport and superglued himself to the top. The Facebook Live video that he recorded at the time has gone viral and James received thousands of letters and emails while he was in prison, from people who felt desperate about the climate emergency and wanted to know how to find the same courage. So this is what we explore in today's episode - courage and agency and activism in an age of total transformation.  What can we do, and how can we find the courage to take the action we know the world needs? Thousands of people with disabilities go sailing every year and it’s a side of our sport that is growing all the time as people experience a level of freedom and control that can be hard for them to find elsewhere in life. Tim Dempsey and Brendan Tourelle both play major roles in Sailability, the name given to sailing for people with disabilities, and talk in this podcast about who can participate, the technology used, where the sport can take them and what it is even like to get out on the water. Both Tim and Brendan bring plenty of their own experiences, given both are confined to wheelchairs, and tell their vastly different but powerful stories. They also delve into some of their experiences on the international circuit, including Tim’s journey to the 2012 London Paralympics, what the racing scene is like in this country and the chances of sailing being included again on the programme for the Paralympics. Tim and Brendan were open and honest in this podcast but mostly enthusiastic about the possibilities for people with disabilities to get involved in sailing. If you haven’t seen Sailability in action, it can be very inspiring and they’re always looking for more people to get involved.

What happens when unforeseen events thwart your plans? Will you have the positive attitude, resilience, and perseverance you'll need to overcome adversity? Our guest today is Carol Cooke, AM, a Canadian-born Australian cyclist, swimmer, and rower and the author of Finding Your Inner Gold. Her compelling and inspiring story is one of perseverance and overcoming adversity by adapting with a positive attitude - and openness to pivoting to something new. Carol joins us from Australia. _________________________ Bio After 41 years of training, 2 countries, 3 sports, and one devastating diagnosis, Carol Cooke’s dream of winning a gold medal came true at 51. This is her story. Carol was born and bred in Toronto, Canada where she fulfilled a life-long dream of following in the footsteps of her family and served as a member of the Toronto Police Force in Canada for fourteen years.  She had it all – an exciting and fulfilling career that also saw her working in the undercover drug squad. But life was about to change dramatically, for better and worse. Carol fell in love with an Australian, married and moved halfway around the world, and settled in Melbourne.  After competing in Hobart at the Masters Swimming Nationals in 1998, she awoke one morning with disturbing balance problems and double vision. After an array of tests, she was bluntly told, “you have MS – go home and get your affairs in order before you become incapacitated”.  She was understandably devastated and the rest of the day was a blur.  Having only been married for three years and with no immediate family around, her thoughts revolved around how she was going to cope with this unpredictable disease. Fortunately, Carol found the determination and spirit to defy what the doctor had told her. Carol was a national level swimmer in Canada while she was growing up and with an unstoppable nature and a passion for sport, Carol took up competitive rowing in December of 2006, made the Australian Rowing Team in 2008 and 2009 where she competed at the World Rowing Championships, coming away with a 6th place. She has held a scholarship at the Victorian Institute of Sport since 2007 and in 2011 took up the sport of para-cycling in the trike class. Carol was named on the Australian para-cycling team to compete in Denmark at the Para-cycling World Road Championships in 2011. She won two silver medals and in 2012 was named in the Australian Team for the London Paralympics. At the Paralympics, Carol beat the men to win a gold medal in the mixed T1-T2 road time trial. At the end of 2012, Carol was ranked number one in the world in the Female T2 category and in 2013 became dual World Champion, winning both the Time Trial and the Road Race.  In 2014 she backed up her World Champion status and again was ranked number one in the world.  In 2015 Carol retained her World Championship Title in the Road Time Trial and won silver in the Road Race.  Also this year she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to sport and philanthropy. In 2016 Carol was named on the Australian Paralympic team for Rio and came away with 2 gold medals in the Road Time Trial and Road Race.  In 2017 Carol once again became a dual World Champion, retaining her #1 ranking, and to cap off an amazing year was awarded the top award at the Victorian Institute of Sport – The Award of Excellence.  She continued to race with another 2 World Championships in 2019. Although living with the never-ending symptoms of MS, Carol has the strength and courage to get up each day with a positive and motivated attitude.  She has learned to live for today and not worry about what may or may not happen in the future. Carol supports others living with MS to fulfill their dreams through her initiative, the 24 Hour Mega Swim. Since its inception in 2001, the event has raised over $11 million and has provided more than 1000 Go for Gold Scholarships in the areas of employment, education, travel,

After taking the silver medal at the 2013 US ModernPentathlon National championships, Graham Maas returned home and immediately made a vow to return in 2014 and bring back gold. In this age of limited attention spans, one year is a long time for a boy of fourteen to stick to a plan. For those unfamiliar with Modern Pentathlon, the sport includes fencing, swimming, running and shooting. Athletes younger than nineteen do not compete in equestrian events, the fifth pentathlon element, for liability reasons. If you think getting your child to soccer practice each week is tough, try scheduling practice for four events on a daily basis. The first step in Graham’s plan was to become an even faster runner. Fortunately, he runs for the Wayzata cross country team. In his final middle school season, Graham went from being a middle of the pack runner to one of the top five runners on the team. Graham singled out the coaching of Chad Bartels and Kraig Lungstrom who worked with him to become better at pacing and using proper form. All of which paid off in spades. Graham finishing up a cross country race for Wayzata in 2013Graham swims year-round with the Life Time Bears swim team. It’s not every swimmer that gets to swim with the US Paralympic national coach, but again fortune shined on Graham when the swim team named Tom Franke as its head coach. Franke, was recently  tabbed the Paralympic National Coach of theYear. Franke helped Team USA to an astonishing 41 medals at the 2012 London Paralympics as co-head coach of the U.S. squad. Graham & swim coach, Tom Franke Franke also individually coached Team USA's three captains: Anna Eames (silver), Cortney Jordan (three silvers, one bronze) and Justin Zook (gold and a world record). Zook has been a key motivator for Graham, providing all the depth and knowledge required to become an Olympian. Before swimming at the Olympic Training Center Aquatic Center, Graham always pays a visit to the photo of Justin Zook, one of his swim coaches back in Minnesota In the three months following cross country season, Franke had lowered Graham’s 200 freestyle time by twelve seconds. Graham also credits Franke with something else: firing the inner Olympic spirit in him and more importantly, being a gracious and humble competitor. In late winter, Graham was struggling with his fencing. He was losing more than ever before. He was having performance meltdowns on the fencing strip. It simply was not working for him. The stars aligned again when Minnesota Sword Club director Rich Jacobson introduced Graham to Jim Johnson, the competitive instructor at the club. Johnson and Graham immediately clicked. As Graham stated, “Prior to Coach Johnson, I was just told to ‘do this’ or ‘do that’ but no one ever connected the dots for me so I never knew why I was doing something with my footwork or with the blade. Coach Johnson explained to me the why, and it all became so clear. I guess I’m sort of cerebral and I just needed to see the end game.” Graham became a much more confident fencer and it started to show in tournaments. Progress was being made.Graham & Minnesota Sword Club competitive epee instructor, Jim Johnson
