The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (04/20/2023): 3:05pm- On Thursday, the House of Representatives advanced legislation that would prevent biological males from competing in women's sports. Ari Blaff of National Review writes, “[t]he House measure seeks to amend federal law so that ‘sex shall be recognized based solely on a person's reproductive biology and genetics at birth,' in order to determine Title IX athletics compliance. Title IX mandates that institutions that receive public funding from the federal government cannot discriminate on the basis of sex.” The bill passed along partisan lines—"with 219 Republicans voting in favor and 203 Democrats voting against.” You can read more here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/zero-house-democrats-vote-to-protect-womens-sports-from-male-intrusion/ 3:10pm- While appearing on Real Time with Bill Maher, Rep. According to The Washington Post's Tony Romm, the proposed legislation is estimated to “save the government $4.5 trillion over the next decade” including “$130 billion in spending cuts for 2024.” The bill would also create “new work requirements for welfare” and “block [President Joe] Biden's forthcoming program to cancel thousands of dollars in college debt.” Unsurprisingly, President Biden has already expressed opposition to Speaker McCarthy's proposal. Mr. Taibbi was told in a call with the agent that both his 2018 and 2021 tax returns had been rejected…the curious timing of this visit, on the heels of the FTC demand that Twitter turn over names of journalists, raises questions about potential intimidation.” On Wednesday, Sen. The Basilica of Saint Mary hosted a lecture with John Berlau titled “George Washington: Champion of Religious Liberty” on February 9, 2021. Throughout his life of public service, George Washington promoted freedom for Catholics, Jews and other religious minorities. Even though he was not Catholic, Washington made a financial contribution towards the establishment of our parish at the request of his friend and aide-de-camp Colonel John Fitzgerald. In a recent piece in National Review, Berlau wrote that the Basilica of Saint Mary is a “monument to Washington’s vision of religious freedom.” Berlau is the author of the new book George Washington, Entrepreneur.  Founded in 1795, the Basilica of Saint Mary in Old Town Alexandria is the first Catholic parish established in Virginia. Pope Francis named the church a minor basilica on December 6, 2017 due to its important role in the growth of the Catholic Church in North America.

INTERVIEW - JOHN BERLAU - senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a member of the Federalist Society Regulatory Transparency Project (RTP) and author of "George Washington, Entrepreneur: How Our Founding Father's Private Business Pursuits Changed America and the World" TOPIC: Discuss the GameStop Stock Market Drama GameStop, AMC shares surge after Reddit users lead chaotic revolt against big Wall Street funds Users on online trading communities are claiming victory for wrecking costly hedge fund gambles those stock prices would fall Shares of video game retailer GameStop and movie theater giant AMC Entertainment soared to astronomical levels Wednesday as an apparent swarm of ordinary investors, spurred on by a Reddit message board, took on big Wall Street funds that had bet the stock prices would fall. GameStop shares more than doubled, to $347.51, and have soared more than 400 percent this week. AMC, beleaguered by the coronavirus pandemic and stay-at-home measures, quadrupled to $19.90 a share. The GameStop and AMC price surges were so dramatic that trading for both companies was temporarily halted by the stock exchanges to temper volatility. But once trading resumed, prices took off again. TD Ameritrade, a leading trading platform, took the unusual step of imposing restrictions on both stocks, citing “an abundance of caution amid unprecedented market conditions.” The extraordinary trading, which many analysts linked to a pandemic-related surge in day trading by average investors, seemed disconnected from the companies’ financial prospects. GameStop, which sells video game software via a network of bricks-and-mortar retail outlets, has lost money in five of the past six quarters. Revenue in the three-month period that ended in October was down 30 percent from the same period one year earlier. As officials at the White House and Federal Reserve avoided detailed comment, there were signs that market watchdogs at the Securities and Exchange Commission will scrutinize the unusual trading. Federal securities law prohibits market participants from misrepresenting a company’s prospects to artificially affect its share price. With Reddit users cloaked in anonymity, there is no way of knowing whether messages touting GameStop come from average Joes — or scam artists executing a “pump-and-dump” stock scheme. REGULATORS BEGIN TO SPIN UP... BLOOMBERG: SEC ‘Monitoring’ GameStop Frenzy as Warren Pressures Regulators The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said it is “actively monitoring” volatility in options and equities markets amid a surge in GameStop Corp. and other companies over the past week that prompted Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren to demand action from regulators. “Consistent with our mission to protect investors and maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, we are working with our fellow regulators to assess the situation and review the activities of regulated entities, financial intermediaries, and other market participants,” the SEC said in a statement Wednesday.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As we round the 4th of July holiday, we've all celebrated George Washington as the first President of the United States, the general who lead the Continental Army against the British, and the second or third most popular character in the Broadway play "Hamilton." However, did you ever think of George Washington as an entrepreneur? Economist John Berlau has thought about that AND how Washington's entrepreneurship aspirations molded both his vision as a future leader, and our country. Today he's with us to share stories from Washington's life, including how he became an entrepreneur, and some of his most prominent contributions to our country. If you're a history fan, entrepreneur, or just someone who wants to learn how the best-and-brightest made their way, today's show is for you. Of course, that's not all. We'll discuss the recent issues with the economy and your 401(k) plan. It turns out that you can still become a 401(k) millionaire. There's no need to get overly creative with your financial plan. That'll be good news for most of us. Plus, we'll talk estate planning. When someone chooses you to manage their affairs when they pass away, what should you do? For some of you we'll preview our best tips, and for everyone else, we'll share what you should think about when choosing an executor or contingent trustee. Don't know those terms? We'll even share what that means on today's show for no charge! Of course, we also save time for Doug's fireworks, including his trivia AND incredible wit. It's a kick-butt first show back for the SB team, and we're glad you're hanging out with us. Check out the show notes for ALL of the links in today's show!
