About Scott: Dr. Scott Belck currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) where he directs the CCM Jazz Orchestra and teaches applied Jazz Trumpet. This week on Jazz After Dinner Joe features Trombonist John Fedchock from his 1995 Reservoir Records recording titled “New York Big Band.”
Trumpeter/composer/arranger/bandleader/educator Tony Kadleck is one of the most sought-after trumpet players on the New York City scene, and has been for some time. He moved to NYC in 1986, following his studies at the New England Conservatory–and a stint in the trumpet section of The Buddy Rich Big Band–and his phone has been ringing ever since. For good reason; at every turn, Kadleck puts the music first, and more than takes care of business. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1989 and quickly hit the road with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Blood Sweat & Tears, and others. Eventually, Kadleck was in such high demand locally, for studio and stage work, that touring took a back seat. He played on countless jingles, scores for TV and film, and worked with the cream of the crop, including Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Issac Hayes, and most recently Steely Dan, Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga, Santana, Weezer, Steve Tyrell, and many, many others. In addition to an on-going abundance of freelance sideman work with NYC's A-list artists, Kadleck is currently a member of many organizations, including the New York Pops, John Pizzarelli's “Swing Seven”, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, John Fedchock's NY Big Band, and can currently be heard on Broadway in the band for “MJ”. To say that Kadleck is a rare bird is a major understatement. Possessing the expertise, musical acumen, phrasing, range, chops, and the desire to handle gigs as diverse as the New York Pops and The Who (for example) with straight-ahead professionalism and excellence is not common. His prowess now bears fruit on his own project, Sides (to be released on Marshall Gilkes' Alternate Side Records on February 10, 2023), which follows up his previous big band album, Around The Horn, and his debut as a leader, Extended Outlook.

On this episode we talk Oklahoma music with UCO's Director of Jazz studies Brian Gorrell. Brian W. Gorrell serves as Director of Jazz Studies for the nationally respected program at the University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab in Edmond, Oklahoma. A former member of the Lawrence Welk Orchestra among many other professional accolades, Gorrell also serves as Advisor for UCO's Master of Music in Jazz Studies and Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, teaches Applied Saxophone, and directs the award winning "UCO Jazz Ensemble I". Under his direction, UCO's top jazz group has been recognized for outstanding large ensemble performances in Downbeat Magazine's 35thAnnual Student Music Awards in 2012 and again in the 39thAnnual Awards in 2016. The group also performed at the prestigious Midwest Clinic in December 2013 and notably at the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conferences in 2012, 2013, 2017 and the upcoming conference in Reno, NV in January 2019. Most recently “UCO Jazz Ensemble 1” tied first place in the collegiate jazz ensemble division at the prestigious Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival in March 2018 and will be featured on the main stage of the Monterey Jazz Festival in September 2018! Gorrell has also presented lectures on jazz and saxophone pedagogy at Oklahoma Music Educators Conferences, Regional North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Conferences and at the NASA Biennial National Conference in 2016. He also currently serves as Music Director for the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra. Professor Gorrell completed a bachelor's degree in Music Education from UCO in 1995 and earned a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance at Oklahoma City University studying with acclaimed classical saxophonist Gail Hall in 1998. Equally proficient on saxophones and keyboards, Gorrell has produced many album projects including "In Some Other World" (1995), "Soulmates" (1999), "In The Swing of Christmas" (2002), "Live at the UCO Jazz Lab" (2008), and as director, “Swingin' in 2012” and “Still Swingin' in 2015” with UCO's Jazz Ensemble I. A new album is also coming along in summer of 2018! In addition to the Welk Orchestra, he has performed with such diverse notables as Doc Severinsen, The Manhattan Transfer, Aretha Franklin, Louie Bellson, Phil Woods, Kris Berg and the Metroplexity Big Band, the OKC Jazz Orchestra, the Edmond Jazz Orchestra, Jay Migliori, Jay Daversa, John Daversa, Clark Terry, The Lennon Sisters, Ralna English, Patti Page, Slide Hampton, Kay Starr, Steve Allen, Jim Nabors, Ty England, Diane Schuur, Christopher Cross, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Drifters, Gil Goldstein, Randy Brecker, Dave Douglas, John Fedchock, and many others. Gorrell has always been passionate about music education and has been aggressive in developing new programs at UCO including a Minor in Jazz Studies and Oklahoma's only Master of Music in Jazz Studies, with majors in Performance and Music Production. He founded the Oklahoma Youth Jazz Ensemble in 2012, which offers advanced jazz education to top high school students in Central Oklahoma, and in addition completed work on a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance degree at UCO that began in Fall 2016. Dr. Anthony Belfiglio is an Associate Professor of Music. He teaches courses in applied commercial piano, commercial keyboard seminars, commercial music analysis, and commercial keyboard pedagogy. He also directs and performs with the Belmont Faculty Jazz Group, an ensemble that he co-founded in 2009.Dr. Belfiglio’s educational credentials include a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music and Human Learning/Jazz Emphasis from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Music in Jazz Performance from the University of Miami, a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy from Temple University, and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from Temple University. His published books include the dissertation Fundamental Rhythmic Characteristics of Improvised Straight-Ahead Jazz (UMI) and his latest book Kenny Kirkland Solo Transcriptions (The System).As a young musician, Dr. Belfiglio performed at various venues in the Philadelphia area. He also performed for two consecutive years at the Oberlin College Summer Piano Institute. Later, he was selected as composer/performer participant with Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead, including performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Theron and Tom head backstage to talk with Chris Anderson, a musician and executive director of Open Tone Music in Akron, about performing in India, South Africa and other countries; the lasting impact of music education; and the growth of the Amistad Caribbean Arts Camp. Chris is the founder of Open Tone Music, a non-profit organization that provides access to premier music education and performance programming for all people. Through Open Tone Music he has reached thousands of individuals in the northern Ohio area. In addition to being a successful music educator, Chris composes and performs many different styles of music. He has performed trombone with some of the best in the classical, jazz, gospel, Latin and other musical idioms. He has had the pleasure of performing with such recording artist as Clark Terry, John Fedchock, Jiggs Whigham, Jon Faddis, Nancy Wilson, Frank Wess, Louie Bellson, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Barry Manilow, Bobby Caldwell, The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Band featuring Slide Hampton, Phil Woods, Antonio Hart and many others. John Fedchock's illustrious career in jazz has spanned four decades. Since his emergence on the scene in 1980, Fedchock has established himself as a world-class trombone soloist, a heralded bandleader, and a Grammy-nominated arranger. An in-demand performer and writer in New York City, his multifaceted talents have led him to become one of NYC's premier jazz artists. His critically acclaimed John Fedchock New York Big Band has become a marquee group, showcasing Fedchock's trombone and arranging as well as the band's all-star soloists. The JFNYBB's five CDs on the MAMA and Reservoir Music labels have all received high praise from critics and extraordinary success on national jazz radio charts. The early success of the band resulted in Fedchock's name appearing in DOWNBEAT's Readers Poll under the categories of Trombone, Arranger and Big Band, simultaneously for several consecutive years. In recognition of his formidable arranging skills, Fedchock is a two-time GRAMMY Award nominee for “Best Instrumental Arrangement”. Born in Rochester, NY, Erik Stabnau became interested in music early on before taking up the saxophone at the age of 9. While in high school, Erik began performing professionally around Rochester and Western NY, and was recognized as an outstanding soloist at the Charles Mingus Competition in New York City.Following high school, Erik earned a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music, where he learned from world renowned musicians and studied privately with saxophonists Chien-Kwan Lin, Jose Encarnacion, and Charles Pillow. He was a member of the Eastman jazz Ensemble under the direction of Bill Dobbins, and the Downbeat award winning Eastman Chamber Jazz Ensemble, which was recognized for their “Outstanding Undergraduate College Performance”.Erik has shared the stage with notable musicians, including David Bixler, Bob Sheppard, John Fedchock, Jim Pugh, Tanya Darby, Derek Gardner, Dennis Mackrel, Reggie Thomas, Bill Holman, and pianist David Paich of Toto. He has also performed with a variety of ensembles, including the Dave Rivello Ensemble, Birch Creek Jazz Orchestra, and the O’Jays. Erik’s playing has been heard throughout the Northeast, with notable performances at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, Lewiston Jazz Festival, New Trier Jazz Festival, and Artpark.Besides playing the saxophone, Erik is an accomplished woodwind doubler on the flute and clarinet. He has performed in orchestras for musicals such as The Drowsy Chaperone, Footloose, Frog & Toad, Grease, Guys & Dolls, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Kiss Me Kate, Les Miserables, West Side Story, and The Wizard of Oz.In addition to performing, Erik is an experienced music educator. This week’s episode features an interview with and music from jazz bassist Lynn Seaton. Lynn teaches at theUniversity of North Texas, and he maintains an active performing career. He was a member of the Woody Herman Band and Count Basie Orchestra, and he played extended tours with Tony Bennett and George Shearing, as well a wide array of many other jazz luminaries. We also feature music from the Lynn Seaton Trio with Bill Mays on piano and Tim Froncek on drums. About Lynn Seaton: Lynn Seaton has had a stellar career as a jazz bassist. Born in Oklahoma in 1957, he started playing the bass at age 9. By the late 70’s he was performing around the state. From 1980 until 1984 he was the house bassist at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati, accompanying big name guest soloists every week. In 1984, he joined Woody Herman and in 1985 he played with the Count Basie Orchestra. After a two-year engagement with the Basie Band, he did extended tours with Tony Bennett and George Shearing. Most of 1991 and 1992 was spent touring with Monty Alexander. Lynn spent a lot of time on the road as a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio from 1995-1999. Since 1993, Lynn has also had a busy career free-lancing with many of the great jazz musicians from many generations, including: Toshiko Akiyoshi, Monty Alexander, Ernestine Anderson, Buck Clayton, Al Cohn, Kenny Drew Jr., Blossom Dearie, Bob Dorough, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Herb Ellis, John Fedchock, Frank Foster, Freddy Green, Tim Hagans, Jeff Hamilton, Scott Hamilton, Wynard Harper, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Marian McPartland, Jay McShann, Mark Murphy, Ken Peplowski, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jimmy Raney, Emily Remler, Diane Schuur, Maria Schneider, Bud Shank, Carol Sloane, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Maxine Sullivan, Mel Torme, Frank Wess, Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, Steve Wilson, Mark Vinci, and Teddy Wilson. He lived in NY from 1986 until 1998. That year, he accepted an offer to teach at the world famous University of North Texas, home to one of the largest jazz programs in the world. He has performed at festivals world wide including Bern, Concord, JVC, Kool, Kyoto, Newport, North Sea, Perugia and Pori. Lynn has performed in 49 of the 50 United States and 35 foreign countries. He has performed on over 100 recordings, including the Grammy winning “Diane Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra”, and two Grammy nominees, John Fedchock “No Nonsense” and Woody Herman “50th Anniversary”. He has three recordings as a leader, “Bassman’s Basement”, “Solo Flights”, and “Puttin’ on the Ritz”. Musical Selections: Strike Up the Band The Patrician Commission
