August 24, 1904 is the birthday of the late bandleader William Count Basie. To celebrate his birthday, I have pulled out a program I produced back in 2013. I decided to focus on the year of 1939 and play many of the songs recorded by the Basie band during that year. I am a big fan of the Basie band as my father had a couple of his records and as I grew older I began to explore the history and recordings of the man known as Count Basie. In addition to Basie, there were those great sidemen of his to spotlight. Musicians like Lester Young, Helen Humes, Buck Clayton, Dickie Wells, and Jo Jones make this a really great year for the Count. This is a good program and I hope you enjoy the music as well as a brief biography of the William Bill Basie known in the big band circle as Count. "Good Morning Blues" (1937) Count Basie and His Orchestra: 1936 - 1938. The Classics Chronological Series (Classics, Ed. 1990) Count Basie, Buck Clayton, Ed Lewis, Bobby Moore, Eddie Durham, George Hunt, Dan Minor, Earl Warren, Jack Washington, Herschel Evans, Lester Young, Freddie Green, Walter Page, Jo Jones, Jimmy Rushing, Lloyd "Skippy" Martin, Harry "Buster" Smith. From January 1, 1953, Live from Birdland, NBC Radio presented Basie's All Stars. William James "Count" Basie (August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935, he formed the Count Basie Orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others. Many musicians came to prominence under his direction, including the tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, the guitarist Freddie Green, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison, plunger trombonist Al Grey, and singers Jimmy Rushing, Helen Humes, Thelma Carpenter, and Joe Williams. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_Basie

1939 was a great year for the Count Basie orchestra. This was the last year of their three year contract with Decca records where they would record many of their hits. He still had Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Jimmy Rushing and other original members in the band. He also had a great female vocalist in the band named Helen Humes. I have been listening to the Count Basie band since I was a teenage as my father had some Basie lps in his collection. I hope you enjoy this look at one recording year in the history of one of the greatest swing bands in history - the great Count Basie Orchestra. The great maestro Leonard Bernstein narrates with many musical examples played by greats like Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith,Louis Armstrong, Buster Bailey, Buck Clayton, Phil Woods, Coleman Hawkins, Miles Davis, John Coltrane etc.what Jazz music is and what it isn't. This is a fun and educational look at what makes this form of music unique and valid as an art form. This disc is part of a The Jazz Show tradition in that we feature this album every year as our "back to school" project along with last week's Cannonball Adderley disc. This is less a Jazz history document but rather a demonstration of how this music is put together. Bernstein loved Jazz and it's obvious from this disc that he feels it's just as important as Bach, Brahms, Beethoven etc. Bernstein's lucidity and clear voice makes many of the so-called complexities of music very clear and simple. Even though this was recorded in the mid-50's it is still a valid and educational document. Leonard Bernstein adds his voice to What Is Jazz.

This famous recording is Part 2 of our "back to school" mode and an annual Feature on The Jazz Show. Bernstein, who loved, respected and understood Jazz presents an educational and entertaining study of this musical form. He talks about how it's put together with some musical examples provided by Bernstein, himself at the piano and some major players like Coleman Hawkins, Buck Clayton, Buster Bailey, Phil Woods, Miles Davis and many more. Even though this recording was done in the 1950's it is still an important educational document. Bernstein was an amazing communicator who could bring some of the complexities of music to the lay person. "What is Jazz?" is a classic and an essential recording for anybody with even the mildest interestin this great American art form called Jazz.
