I believe this is the most important podcast episode ever done in history! Big words for sure...now let me back them up Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn is a world renowned cardiologist who was a surgeon at the famed Cleveland Clinic, the top Heart Hospital in the world.  He is the author of the best selling book Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease and was also prominently featured in the groundbreaking documentary Forks Over Knives.  His pioneering work with Coronary Artery Disease has saved countless lives. We explore: Who has heart disease? What percentage of people? Why in his 9th decade of life does Dr. Esselstyn continue to talk about eradicating or slowing the progression of heart disease. What's is the mission that's still driving him. When he speaks of Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease is he primarily speaking about Coronary Artery Disease or all Heart Disease? The internet is filled with Drs & others promoting Keto and low Carb Diets and they swear by their research. How do we explain the claimed successes of those diets...or are they really successful? Why are ALL oils bad, especially for those with coronary artery disease?  Are there any oils that are good for those that don't have heart disease? Should everyone have a Calcium Score and when should they be alarmed? How important is it to lower LDL and raise HDL? What does he think of Statins? Why should there never be a reason to develop heart disease. At what point should someone have an angiogram and stents placed or bypass surgery? How does someone track their progress after a positive stress test and starting a Whole Food plant -based diet Why a Whole Food Plant Based Diet is Different than a Vegan diet Why do leafy greens eaten 6x a day help to mitigate or reverse further coronary artery disease? Which are the best greens to eat? Which are the next best foods after greens? How about Nightshades? Good or Bad? Can this diet prevent event the most serious heart blockages and circumvent even a quadruple bypass? How much fat is recommended for those with coronary artery disease and how much of that in saturated fat?  Is all saturated fat equal? What three Whole Foods are bad for Coronary Artery Disease patients?  How about sweeteners?

I have forever. And I always come back to you. I trust you. You provide enough science but also keep it real. Thank you for being tried and true. I look forward to the days when a new podcast is released. Can we talk nightshades? How inflammatory are they for someone who avoids processed stuff, feels better on no gluten, dairy or sugar? No autoimmune issues. Relatively healthy. Probably overtrain. And just always seeking to feel my best. Is it worth eliminating them to see how much better I feel? And, if it is, do I go full bore and cut all the spices too? Thanks a bunch!   Charles Poliquin - Gotu Kola Andrea writes: Hey there, fine folks of The Healthy Rebellion! I was intrigued when I heard you talk about Poliquin's gotu kola protocol for tightening skin. I jumped right in and am about 5 months into taking this supplement. I realized however, that I don't know what to do when I hit the point of tightened skin. Do I keep taking the supplement in smaller doses forever? Do I just stop? I can't seem to find any info what to do once the goal is achieved. I am hoping you have some insight. Thanks for all you guys do, you have been the one podcast that I have listened to without fail for almost a decade (maybe more than a decade? Time flies.) and I just want you to know how much you are appreciated. Thanks, Andrea   Mysterious BP Changes Christin writes:  Hi Robb and Nicki, I was looking for resources for a blood pressure question for my husband and while I found a few older show transcripts, nothing quite gave me a clear answer. My husband has seen a steady rise in his blood pressure over the last 2 years. In 2022 at his company health fair his BP was 108/72.  In 2023 it was 134/84. I just took it this evening (manually) and it was 152/100.  I know that consistent time of day readings can matter and for context his health fair readings were in the morning and the one I just took was about 8:45 pm, however he'd been sitting resting for a good 20 minutes on the couch watching tv. This is all confusing because his a1c and general blood sugar readings are all good/normal (I've done both some fasted and response readings to get an idea of how high he spikes with some foods). He's 5'10" about 175lbs so not really overweight.  He lifts weights 2x a week and we typically go hiking and/or walking 2x/week together so he's not getting much vigorous aerobic work over the light-moderate category.  HOwever, especially now that summer is here he's very active with yard work throughout the week, carrying heavy stuff and doing manual labor in the garden and stuff often for 1-2 hours at a time. He asked me if I thought he should reduce his sodium intake (he is a heavy salter of food) and after reviewing some of what you guys have talked about with past posts and some of Hubermans stuff I don't think that's the answer. I did however talk to him about his general junk food intake - he likes to snack on chips and does like his sweets - which he agreed and acknowledged that maybe he needs to reduce that.  He's had a stressful previous year at his job that was messing with his regular exercise regimen and forcing him to frequently stay late/work extra hours and so I do wonder how much this could be playing into things also.  Thankfully that has improved in the last 3ish months letting him get back to a more consistent schedule and workouts. Outside of these few things the only other thing I can think of to tell him is to try and add in more aerobic work to his week at least at a zone 2 level.  Other than that I'm stumped.  Is there anything you would suggest?  Any resources I should look in to?  What else can I tell him? He has no other health issues, we don't take any medication at all and despite his lack of formal aerobic work he can do a tough hike (6 miles with 2000' of elevation for example) without major fatigue or being totally dogged; that said I know that it's important to get regular aerobic work. So...help please! Thanks for all your great stuff over the years, you have no idea how helpful and appreciated it all is...even if there's only 6 of us left at any given time .  Keep it up. These plants are high in solanine, the glycoalkaloid that can be poisonous and deadly in high enough doses. So, here are the main take aways from this episode...Vegetables are in the nightshade family - potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, goji berriesThe utter lack of evidence that these foods cause inflammation or health issuesSome of the health promoting nutrients that are actually in these foodsThe power of placebo/nocebo effects! What to do if you do experience intolerance or symptoms when eating whole plant foodsLinks to some more good stuff- ALL NEW EAT MORE, WEIGH LESS PROGRAM - www.alter.health/eat-more-weigh-less- 1-on-1 Nutritional Analysis Package - www.alter.health/nutritional-analysis - Get the Alter Health weekly WFPB Meal Guides: www.alter.health/meal-guides- Work with us in the Thrive on Plants program: www.alter.health/thrive-on-plants

This week, we feature a conversation taped live in New Orleans with Arkansas-born multi-instrumentalist and roots-soul singer Anna Moss, who has criss-crossed the country in recent years with her sonic partner Joel Ludford in their band Handmade Moments. Growing up as a bathroom-singing nerd playing saxophone in the school band, Anna admits that if she could wield any superpower it might be invisibility. Not necessarily the first thing you think of for an openly political, big-voiced folk festival favorite who has made a name for herself sitting in with some of the biggest names in the Americana scene. A recent collaboration with Rainbow Girls bore especially potent fruit - and if you read my Music That Moved Me in 2022 list you'll see at the very top was Anna's thorny "Big Dick Energy.”  Rarely does a song make you laugh and then dance and then follow with a sucker punch about how unsafe many women feel just taking up space in the world. The video also illustrates the song's deft twist: how women can gang together to mock and minimize the men who for so long have taken away their agency and power. And yet, the song also makes you want to forget it all and just groove to the sexiest flute solo in recent memory. If this is a foreshadowing of what's to come with Anna's solo work, call me quite intrigued.  Whether she's playing crunchy bass clarinet or upright bass, electric or acoustic guitar, or singing with Joel in Handmade Moments or her other jazzy group the Nightshades, Anna is never shy about speaking her mind in her music. Take a listen to Handmade Moments' rapidly rhyming, gorgeously harmonized climate change banger “Hole In The Ocean” which wouldn't feel out of place in a slam-poetry jam. A song on their forthcoming record End Of The Wars (coming in May) directly confronts Trump's cult-like status, again not pulling any punches. Want to see an early version of the song played with sax in a cave? Sure you do.  The dangers of the road are not lost on Anna and Joel of course. They were hit head-on during a freak accident on a run in Northern California years back and were lucky to make it out relatively unscathed. She's trying to keep things a bit mellower these days. It was special talking to Anna in her adopted new home of New Orleans, and the soulful sounds that trickle into her living room on Frenchman Street can be heard throughout the songs she's working on. Fittingly, a slow burn live track she released, “Slow Down, Kamikaze,” is a great reminder to stop trying to do too much and focus on what actually matters.  Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-show-on-the-road-with-z-lupetin1106/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Curious about anti-inflammatory nutrition? Well prepare to get nerdy in this solo episode, because host Desiree Nielsen RD is going to tell you everything you need to know about the anti-inflammatory diet. Over a decade ago, the idea that chronic inflammation may be one of the root causes of - or exacerbating - chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease or even skin conditions like acne and rosacea - was considered controversial. Now, it's well accepted that most chronic conditions (even IBS!) are associated with higher inflammatory responses which means, of course, that there are A LOT of opinions on what an anti-inflammatory diet looks like. But what does the science say? And is it really as simple as avoiding “inflammatory” foods? Desiree is going to break it ALL down and by the end of this episode, you'll know almost everything you need to know about anti-inflammatory nutrition and if you're still hungry for more, than definitely pick up Desiree's book on anti-inflammatory eating, Eat More Plants. Nightshades are a group of plants that belong to the Solanaceae family. They include some very commonly eaten foods such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and potatoes. These foods have been eaten for centuries by many cultures around the world and are considered a staple food in many traditional diets. Despite this, if you go digging into ‘health and wellness' advice on the Internet, you'll sometimes come across health warnings about nightshades. Digestive issues and inflammation feature prominently. In this podcast, I explore the evidence for any health harms arising from eating nightshades and put this into context for the many health benefits that they also provide.Episode transcriptTo access the full episode transcript, go to the following link and select the individual podcast episode and then click on the ‘Transcript' tab https://thinkingnutrition.buzzsprout.comConnect with meInstagram: doctimcroweFacebook: Thinking NutritionTwitter: CroweTim

The Alan Sanders Show
Gut health, nightshades, lectins and vitamin supplements with Dr. Tim Ryan

Our third Saturday of each month we host a segment called Physician's Third Saturday. We invite Tim Ryan, M.D. of The Physician's Practice to join in health related discussions. Today's episode begins with a discussion of "good" bacteria v. "bad" bacteria in your intestinal tract. We dive into a discussion of probiotics and pre-biotics and if there is any real benefit. We then move toward certain foods that fall into the family of nightshades. This leads to a discussion of the protein lectin. As we wrap up the episode, we then discuss vitamin supplements and are they really worth taking? Perhaps some are better and others don't stay in your body long enough to be helpful.  Dr. Ryan is a family practitioner who currently runs The Physician's Practice in NW Georgia and loves what he does. Growing up, he always thought being a doctor would be the most rewarding career. In 1995, after finishing his Family Practice Residency, he moved to Cartersville because the Olympics were coming to Atlanta and because he liked the community. He has been serving as a general practitioner ever since.  I invite you to follow me on Twitter @alanjsanders and to like my public Facebook page for The Alan Sanders Show. I also have an Instagram account you can follow as well. I will post my appearances on social media and enjoy chatting with listeners both on-air and online. I would also encourage you to like our Facebook page called Freedom Cocktail, where we try to bring out news stories often overlooked or misreported by the mainstream media. I also write for the blog site of the same name, FreedomCocktail. And, if you want something a little different, checkout my other podcast where my co-host, Walt Murray, and I breakdown the films of Gene Wilder at The Wilder Ride. We are branded everywhere by that name, both on social media and on just about every pod-catcher available. We'd love you to come join our closed Listeners Group on Facebook to join in the conversation.
