This episode has been in the works for a little over 3 years now. My original intention was to meet the members of Brass Against and talk to the brass players about the band and all kinds of other topics. I followed up on the message about 2-3 months ago and I received a response. (I was one happy camper) They said, “Frank will do it!” So then I began researching Frank Cohen. After falling into that rabbit hole I discovered, Frank has done a lot! He's a member of Brass Against and he currently is lead trombone/soloist with Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, with Willie Colon, and is a member of the High and Mighty Brass Band. Mr. Cohen has great life experiences as a musician that we can all learn from, maybe some can relate to, but most of all we have found another trombone treasure! https://rathtrombones.com/robert-kaip-loves-his-rath-2/ https://www.highandmightybrassband.com/

In the final part of a two-part episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with my son, Skyler, for a heartfelt and meaningful conversation about our shared musical journeys. In this episode, I dive into my gap year after high school, during which I taught drum lines and percussion ensembles. I talk about the challenges I faced as a teacher and how they shaped my understanding of communication and connection. From there, I reflect on my time at Belmont University, where I studied classical and commercial music. One standout memory from those days was playing John Cage's Third Construction and the invaluable lessons that came with it.I also share stories from my time playing gigs on a cruise ship, a job that pushed me in ways I hadn't expected. It was demanding, but it prepared me for the next phase of my musical journey—transitioning to bass guitar. That shift opened up new opportunities and gave me a different perspective on music. I talk about how playing bass connected me with some incredible musicians and the importance of locking in with great drummers to really understand rhythm and groove.Throughout the episode, I reflect on my experiences playing alongside musicians like Tommy Dodd and Scott Meeder. Each one left a mark on my career, teaching me lessons I carry with me to this day. I also talk about the importance of chemistry on stage and how those connections often extend beyond the music. Wrapping it all up, I share my gratitude for the opportunities I've had and the people I've met along the way.Thank you for tuning in! Especially revolutionary song, of all kinds. And that of course has me thinking about the power of revolutionary song and art of all kinds, the commercial music industry and how it tries to co-opt this expression of the people and the trap of “representation” in media and politics. This week on A Voice and Beyond, I am very excited to introduce this week's very special guest, Jeannette LoVetri, who, by the way, needs little introduction as she is one of the most recognised and highly acclaimed voice teachers from around the world. Jeanie is my CCM inspiration, and I wanted to honour her and the work that she continues to do, not only in sharing her knowledge and skills in the CCM sector but also in legitimising CCM from a pedagogical standpoint in our teaching community. Jeanie is a true pioneer, and her success has come about because of her remarkable resilience, curiosity for learning, and sheer tenacity. Jeanie has certainly paved the way for the rest of us who teach singers across the broad range of CCM styles, so we too can be respected and acknowledged alongside our classical colleagues for the work that we do in the singing voice field. This episode is a recap of sections of a two-part interview I did with Jeanie in 2022, and I wanted to replay this interview as I feel it is important right now, more than ever, to be advocating for the training of CCM singers. Let's create a movement and see if we can create change in academic music programs to accommodate singers who want to pursue a career in the CCM music market. “So many people view conducting as a reflection of the music, and if that works for them, that's great. I view conducting as a reflection of the movement. Undergrads aren't always predisposed to musical language, but they are already predisposed to the language that Laban uses: time, space, weight, flow. Instead of saying 'that's not marcato enough,' you could instead say 'that's not heavy enough' or ‘direct enough.' That's language that we're already familiar with as people.”Dr. Eric Rubinstein is Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Nazareth University, where he directs the Chamber Singers and Treble Choir and teaches additional coursework in conducting and music education. Prior to his appointment at Nazareth, Dr. Rubinstein served as Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College (CUNY).Ensembles under his direction have been recognized across New York and New England for performances of the highest artistic caliber. Program highlights with the Nazareth Chamber Singers include a performance tour of Poland, a year-long partnership with Nazareth's Department of Theatre and Dance, and an invited performance at the 2023 NYSSMA Winter Conference. Trombonist/composer Michael Davis has enjoyed a diverse and acclaimed career over the past 40 years. Widely known as the trombonist for five world tours with the Rolling Stones, he toured and recorded extensively with Frank Sinatra, has released 14 CDs as a solo artist, composed over 150 works, authored a dozen books for brass players of all levels and appeared on over 500 CDs, television themes and motion picture soundtracks. He is the founder, creator and president of Hip-Bone Music, Inc. In 2011, the S.E. Shires Company released the Michael Davis signature model trombone and followed that in 2014 with the release of the Michael Davis+ trombone. Born to a musical family in San Francisco, CA on August 13th, 1961, Michael's early musical studies included the piano, drums, tuba, baritone horn and electric bass. Settling on the trombone in high school, he quickly found his stride and received principal chairs in many all-state honor groups. His collegiate career commenced at the Eastman School of Music in the fall of 1979. In the spring of 1983, Davis received the break he had hoped for when the Buddy Rich Band called and asked him to sign on. His two-year stint with the band forged musical and personal friendships that continue to this day and presented him with “the best graduate degree anyone could possibly hope for.” Michael's freelance career in New York City began in earnest in 1986 and before long he was one of the top trombonists around. As testimony to his versatility and wide regard, the list of jazz and pop luminaries he has worked with includes: James Taylor, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, Tony Bennett, Jay Z, Sarah Vaughan, Sting, Beck, Branford Marsalis, Peter Gabriel, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, Bob Mintzer, Paul Simon, David Sanborn, Terence Blanchard and scores of others. In the field of music education, Davis has served as a guest artist and clinician around the world, while also authoring a number of highly esteemed instructional books and arrangements for musicians of all ages and abilities. A multiple recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, he maintains his own jazz groups and projects through Hip-Bone Music. He has documented his efforts on 14 CDs as a leader, including his latest, Open City with the Hip-Bone Big Band featuring a star studded line-up of New York jazz and studio luminaries. Open City showcases a unique family alliance with Michael's oldest son Cole penning three of the compositions, co-producing the entire project, and playing bass while his younger son Zaq brings his talents to the trumpet section. Currently, Davis continues his busy schedule as an in demand New York freelance musician with a steady diet of Broadway shows, studio recording work and live concerts. He travels extensively as a solo artist guesting with professional, college and high school bands around the world, while also continuing to build his publishing company into one of the preeminent purveyors of the highest quality music for brass.

Trumpeter/composer/arranger/bandleader/educator Tony Kadleck is one of the most sought-after trumpet players on the New York City scene, and has been for some time. He moved to NYC in 1986, following his studies at the New England Conservatory–and a stint in the trumpet section of The Buddy Rich Big Band–and his phone has been ringing ever since. For good reason; at every turn, Kadleck puts the music first, and more than takes care of business. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1989 and quickly hit the road with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Blood Sweat & Tears, and others. Eventually, Kadleck was in such high demand locally, for studio and stage work, that touring took a back seat. He played on countless jingles, scores for TV and film, and worked with the cream of the crop, including Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Issac Hayes, and most recently Steely Dan, Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga, Santana, Weezer, Steve Tyrell, and many, many others. In addition to an on-going abundance of freelance sideman work with NYC's A-list artists, Kadleck is currently a member of many organizations, including the New York Pops, John Pizzarelli's “Swing Seven”, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, John Fedchock's NY Big Band, and can currently be heard on Broadway in the band for “MJ”.     To say that Kadleck is a rare bird is a major understatement. Possessing the expertise, musical acumen, phrasing, range, chops, and the desire to handle gigs as diverse as the New York Pops and The Who (for example) with straight-ahead professionalism and excellence is not common. His prowess now bears fruit on his own project, Sides (to be released on Marshall Gilkes' Alternate Side Records on February 10, 2023), which follows up his previous big band album, Around The Horn, and his debut as a leader, Extended Outlook.

Trombonist, composer, arranger James Burton III has lent his sound to multiple Grammy Award-winning albums and Tony Award-winning Broadway productions. Born in Queens, now a resident of Harlem, Burton III is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute at the Hartt School of Music. While earning his Master's Degree and Artist Diploma from the Juilliard School, Burton held both the Morse and Gluck Fellowships and received the Schuman Prize, an award named for Juilliard's founding president and given to one graduating Masters Degree candidate annually. Burton got his professional start playing with many of the great large ensembles; the Illinois Jacquet Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars, the Lincoln Center and Vanguard Jazz Orchestras etc. Additionally, the opportunity to perform/record with legends Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, Ron Carter and Christian McBride inspired Burton to co-found a 10-piece ensemble called the Uptown Jazz Tentet, which celebrated the release of a second album in late 2020, to much critical acclaim. Currently, Burton's playing and original compositions can be heard alongside band mates Jeremy Pelt and Wayne Escoffery in a dynamic new ensemble; Black Art Jazz Collective. BAJC has released three albums since its inception, the latest two reaching the #1 position on the JazzWeek Charts for  international radio play. In the model of jazz education pioneer Jackie McLean, Burton is an avid educator and has been a full time associate professor at both the Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music as well as Director of Jazz Education at New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Burton continues to pass on the legacy of the music via master classes, ensemble coachings and workshops for arts education institutions across the globe. On December 3, 1967, Dr. Christiaan Barnard completed the first human heart transplant. At the time, it seemed incredible—and it is—but today, we hardly bat an eye at a heart transplant because of how rapidly the healthcare and biotech fields are coming out with innovative surgeries, technologies, and therapies. What does the biotech industry look like today and what are some of the new therapeutic options under development? On today's episode of Highway to Health, Host David Kemp speaks with Tilat Imran, CEO of Rani Therapeutics, to discuss the current and future state of the biotech industry and how Rani's new “injection” pill works and what are its potential applications. Imran discussed how although biotech developments seem to develop slowly, we are in a golden age. The global biotechnology market is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.9 percent between 2022 and 2030, according to Grand View Research.“I want to challenge that perception that things are taking too long…I think we live in a golden age of healthcare and biotech. I think we'll look back 50, 70 years from now and many of us will be alive because of technologies and innovations that are happening right now. The challenges Rani Therapeutics anticipates and where they are in their journey2. The dissolvable injectable pain-free capsule Rani Therapeutics has developed and current health afflictions it can address3. What may be available in 5 to 10 years for treatment of chronic diseases in the biotech marketImran provided examples of all the applications of the Rani capsule. “There's so many places you can take this. Cardiometabolic disease, diabetes, as you mentioned. All the immunology, autoimmune diseases because biologics are being used everywhere now. So, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, osteoporosis…eventually, we want to do work in oncology. There's a real potential there, we think, to use Rani pills with more frequent dosing to perhaps get better efficacy out of the same drugs that are being given more infrequently now.” Imran is CEO of Rani Therapeutics and has previously worked for VentureHealth, InCube Labs, Venture Web Partners, The Angels' Forum, and Talat Imran Consulting. This week's guest is Kim Chandler, a renowned contemporary vocal coach and session singer who teaches professional singers from her studio in Marbella. Her career as a performer has seen her provide vocals for TV and film and she often presents workshops for teachers of voice. Kim has also created the Funky'n'Fun vocal exercise series and a curriculum poster used by fellow contemporary voice teachers in their studios. Kim joins Alexa on Singing Teachers Talk all the way from sunny Spain.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Kim didn't actually intend on being a vocalist, it was a case of being asked to do more and more singing work until she found that it was her full-time profession. Some people still only know her as their old French teacher.  As a session singer you need to be able to be quite gymnastic vocally. Your voice technique needs to be on form and you need stamina. Kim has had to sing for six or seven hours at a time going from the top to the bottom of her range.  A session singer should also be quite generic sounding. If you have a signature sound you should be an artist. A session singer needs to blend into everything that's happening around them and not be too distinctive.  Having great ears is the number one thing for a session singer. That's for tuning, harmonising, timing, and double and triple tracks.    BEST MOMENTS ‘The more you do it, the better you get, the more exposure you get'  ‘I like the challenge of not knowing what I need to do next' ‘We're like the decathletes of the singing world as session singers'   EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training    Guest Website: www.kimchandler.com www.virtualvocals.com www.funkynfun.com   Social Media:  (Twitter) @KimChandlerVox (Instagram) @KimChandlerSinger   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Michael McDonald Top of the Pops: YouTube.com/watch?v=DapM2CSVdUg Humidiflyer: https://humidiflyer.com/ Curriculum Poster: www.comptonpublishing.co.uk/the-chandler-curriculum-for-training-pop-s.php The Ultimate Vocal Voyage by Daniel Zangger Borch  Funky Fundamentals Online Course: www.musicgurus.com/courses/funky-fundamentals-for-pop-singing  Training Contemporary Commercial Singers by Elizabeth Ann Benson  (YouTube) Breaking Down the Riffs by Natalie Weiss. Can you use commercial music in your podcast?  Or movie clips?  Or other snippets that are commercially licensed? No.  You can't, and you shouldn't.This is a question I'm  frequently asked by clients and potential clients.  And I've heard every excuse in the book.  Oh, it's only a few seconds, so it falls under "fair use."   Oh come on, are Guns N Roses really gonna sue me?  Well, remember when Metallica did sue Napster back in the day.?So let's dive a little deeper.   The bottom line is, when it comes to podcasting, the law hasn't caught up to the technology.  I think there's a day coming when you'll be able to pay a small fee to use a big artist's music in your show.  But that day isn't here yet.  Do I know people who have pulled it off? Sure. But I don't think it's a risk you want to take.  We'll start with music.Music artists, to me, fall into three categories.  Big names, smaller names that have a record label deal, and independent artists.  The first group, the big name A-listers,  have the money, lawyers, and resources to come after you.  You might think, "oh, well only a few people listen to my show."  Well, it only takes one listener, or one episode to go viral. Then you have a target on your back.   Now, the second group, signed to a label, but not quite A-list.  The music industry has radically changed over the last 20 years. They aren't making money from CD sales anymore.  And if you spend a buck for their song on iTunes, how many pennies do they get?  Touring has been non-existent since the pandemic, so it's not easy to make money.  And using their music on your show, without their permission, is essentially stealing. Also, even if they love the idea of you using their song on your show, they no longer own 100% of it. You need to get sign-off from ALL the stakeholders.  And that can be a legal nightmare. The final group, independent musicians - COULD be your answer.  If they are unsigned to a label, and own 100% of the rights to their music, you can use their music - but you better get their permission, in writing, before you do.     And if you don't personally know an aspiring aritst to work with, there are services for royalty free music on the web - a simple Google search will get you there. What about movies?  Kind of the same thing as A-list artists.  They  may not find you, but if they do, they have deep pockets and very expensive lawyers.   I'm actually told Disney is diving headfirst into this crackdown.   So you better think twice before using that "We don't talk about Bruno" clip in your show.  In other words, we don't talk about Bruno in your podcast.Look, I don't want to be a total downer here.  But Spotify, Apple, and others have AI built in that can find copyrighted content and immediately yank your show if you're in violation - the same way YouTube does.   Do people get away with it? Yes.  Do you want to take the chance of having your show removed, being sued, or even getting  a cease and desist letter with very fancy letterhead on it?  I don't think so.There will be a time you can use this stuff on your show - it's coming.  It's just not here yet.Until next time, stay healthy and stay safe. Lata!

In this, the final English language episode of Season One, we meet Adam Galchus, currently studying for a  Master's Degree in Special Education.  Prior to commencing these studies, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Music, with a concentration in Jazz and Commercial Music.  He is also the composer of Aging Wisely: The Podcast theme music.  Adam was born with a disability. Notwithstanding that, he and his parents found his gifts in the arts, specifically music. From the age of eight, his gift was cultivated and he began his journey to musicianship when he took up the drums and, later, the trombone (and some piano).  Due to his own life experiences and interactions with disabled children, he decided to pursue a degree in Special Education. He hopes to incorporate his musical training and education, in the work he does with high school students.  He's also hoping to continue and pursue a career as a musician, composer and producer.  Adam is an example of not only perseverance and recognizing your talent, but also of how the support of a "village" can impact and change the trajectory of a child's life.  If you'd like to learn more or connect with Adam, please go to:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/adam-galchus-808492112/

Susan Palyo has been working for Voicetrax West since 1990 and has been the resident demo producer since 1996. Susan grew up in Springfield, Illinois. Her passion for music led her to believe that pursuing a degree in Commercial Music from Millikin University in Decatur, IL would be a great idea since she wanted a job where she didn't have to wear a dress. Shortly after graduating, Susan packed up her car and drove to Los Angeles to pursue a career in recording. Susan landed at the famed Cherokee music studios as an assistant engineer. She got to meet lots of cool celebrities, and she didn't have to wear a dress. But, the pay didn't measure up. So, she looked around and landed the position of head engineer at Voice Trax West. After engineering loads of commercial sessions and assisting in demo production under Thom Pinto and Cindy Akers, Susan became the full-time demo producer. Since then she has produced hundreds of demos for many aspiring and successful VO actors including Grey Delisle, Debi Derryberry, Robert Clotworthy, and Stew Herrera. Her demos are respected by all of the top VO agencies in town for their quality and contemporary style. Susan also has a great reputation as an instructor and director and teaches workshops and private studies in commercial and animation voiceover.
