Trumpeter/composer/arranger/bandleader/educator Tony Kadleck is one of the most sought-after trumpet players on the New York City scene, and has been for some time. He moved to NYC in 1986, following his studies at the New England Conservatory–and a stint in the trumpet section of The Buddy Rich Big Band–and his phone has been ringing ever since. For good reason; at every turn, Kadleck puts the music first, and more than takes care of business. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1989 and quickly hit the road with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Blood Sweat & Tears, and others. Eventually, Kadleck was in such high demand locally, for studio and stage work, that touring took a back seat. He played on countless jingles, scores for TV and film, and worked with the cream of the crop, including Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Issac Hayes, and most recently Steely Dan, Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga, Santana, Weezer, Steve Tyrell, and many, many others. In addition to an on-going abundance of freelance sideman work with NYC's A-list artists, Kadleck is currently a member of many organizations, including the New York Pops, John Pizzarelli's “Swing Seven”, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, John Fedchock's NY Big Band, and can currently be heard on Broadway in the band for “MJ”. To say that Kadleck is a rare bird is a major understatement. Possessing the expertise, musical acumen, phrasing, range, chops, and the desire to handle gigs as diverse as the New York Pops and The Who (for example) with straight-ahead professionalism and excellence is not common. His prowess now bears fruit on his own project, Sides (to be released on Marshall Gilkes' Alternate Side Records on February 10, 2023), which follows up his previous big band album, Around The Horn, and his debut as a leader, Extended Outlook.
Schneider's album "The Thompson Fields" will be showcased. Also on the show, selections by Milt Kleeb Dectet, Scenes, Primo Kim and more.

Today, we revisit a conversation with 2019 NEA Jazz Master composer, conductor, and arranger Maria Schneider who creates highly original and evocative compositions for her jazz orchestra. A New York Thanksgiving tradition was a week-long series of performances by the Maria Schneider Orchestra at the Jazz Standard. As we know the pandemic put the performance of live music on hold for over a year, there was no residency in 2020 and sadly, the Jazz Standard has shuttered its location. But happily the Maria Schneider Orchestra has recently returned to the stage performing in late November at New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Much of Schneider's music is autobiographical, evoking the Minnesota plains where she was born and raised. She returns to the theme of her childhood in a prairie town again and again; in fact, she's come to realize that the foundation of her music is her hometown. She finds parts of it magical, and we certainly hear it in her music. Although she's composed classical work and collaborated with David Bowie, Maria's musical center remains in jazz. In this podcast, we talk about her connection to jazz (especially to the music of NEA Jazz Master Gil Evans), the ways in which she and the musicians in her band inspire one another, her collaboration with Bowie, and how her deep ties to Windom, Minnesota, translates into mesmerizing music. A jazz club is not just a commercial enterprise, or an entertainment spot, it's a cultural hub. When a venue like the Jazz Standard closes the loss should not be seen only in terms of a measurable disappearance of revenues but especially in terms of an unmeasurable loss of artistic opportunities. This week we focus on the artistic opportunities that the Jazz Standard made possible over the years, through some of the best concerts that were recorded live at its celebrated location on East 27th Street. The playlist features The Michael Leonhart Orchestra [pictured]; Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra; Mingus Big Band; The Michael Blake Euplion Orchestra; Maria Schneider Orchestra; Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra; SFJAZZ Collective; Wolfgang Muthspiel, Mick Goodrick; Ben Sidran feat. David "Fathead" Newman; Antonio Sanchez. Detailed playlist available at: https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/12172805/Mondo-Jazz (up to Antonio Sanchez). Photo credit: Nathan West.

The pandemic has claimed its first major New York City jazz club. Jazz Standard, which opened in 1997, has shut its doors. Recordings of many artists were made there, among them the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Fred Hersch. Artistic director Seth Abramson says the reaction from the jazz community has been overwhelming. “The overarching sentiment is one of great loss and then one of great gratitude,” he said, “for having had the opportunity to be a part of the room and for the opportunity to play in and (be) given the freedom to express themselves.” It’s not all bad news though for Jazz Standard. The club’s owners say they hope to resurrect it somewhere at some point in the future. Abramson says the club had a unique vibe. “The club was a home and a venue for the artists and the fans to congregate,” he said. “It gave the artists a stage to do what they wanted to do and have their fans be able to be there and enjoy the entire
Welcome to another episode of SOMETHING came from Baltimore. My name is Tom Gouker and I will be your host for the evening. If you have listened to past episodes of Something came from Baltimore, you know that I have a “thing for Big Bands”. You heard me a “thing” Recently I interviewed “Swingadelic” from NYC, Njet Njet Nine from Sweden, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, The Dirty River Jazz Band from San Antonio Texas, Derrick Garner and the Big dig! Band for Winnipeg. In my opinion, Big Bands are sexy, expensive, and they knock on the door of our rich jazz past with respect and take it to the next level. These bands were common in the 40’s through the 60’s and now, when at great one comes around you have to take notice, like this one BT ALC Big Band. BT ALC Big Band is based out of Boston, Mass BT stands for trombonist Brian Thomas, and the ALC stands for trumpeter Alex Lee-Clark and jointly they hold down this musical unit. Formed in 2011, and there latest recording was released in 2019 on the Ropeadope Records called, “The Search for Peace”. This group brings the big band…but they also bring the FUNK. I recently learned about the BT ALC Big Band through a Spotify playlist that was “created especially for me” and here it was…a song called, “The Iguana” a wonderful single that blew me away. The Iguana was released on August 27, 2020 and I cannot turn enough people onto this song. It is the BT ALC Big Band with a little help form Erik Krasno and Alan Evans (from Soulive) and Karl Denson (from Slightly Stoopid, the Tiny Universe and basically everywhere) In this interview we will chat with Brian Thomas and Alex Lee Clark about the band, there 2019 release called, “the Search for Peace” and “The Iguana” Brian Thomas and Alex Lee Clark welcome to Something came from Baltimore. As a child I was the "one with the records" and I would DJ all the school "sock hops". In college, I was the radio programmer, and wrote a music column. Fast forward, I worked at 88.9 FM WXPN, Philadelphia PA, home of the NPR Radio Show called, "Live@the World Cafe" for 14 years. I also worked in the Broadcasting Department at "QVC" for 5 years. I DJ under the name DJ Normal in the bar circuit in Baltimore, MD for 4 years. I had radio show at Morgan State Radio 88.1 FM, Baltimore MD, called, "Jazz 101". "Jazz 101" had interviews with musicians to explain why jazz is so special. The "Cool Jazz" format of the station changed and I lost my show and I continued with interviews with musicians on my on podcast called, "SOMETHING came from Baltimore". SCFB is now over 150 episodes strong with interviews with John Doe, Swingadelic, Gerald Albright, Samite, Bokante, Kat Edmonson, Al Di Meola, Auntie Hammy, The Beatle Guru, Bodega, The Homeless Gospel Choir, Orrin Evans, GoGo Penguin, Warren Wolf, Joey Alexander, and so much more! The podcast keeps growing as "SOMETHING came from Baltimore" gets over 250-500 spins a day and for some reason we are popular in France! Thank you France! If you listen to the interviews you can hear that I am struggling grouping sentences and stringing thoughts together. I have dyslexia all my life, and in my 20's I thought it would define me and I placed limitations on what I could do. I always wanted to be a school teacher, but I was afraid that I would be found out. Through the years, I have worked through the limitations, and I love music and this podcast so much that I can't be stopped! Future Projects: Film - Script for "I'm Falling to Pieces". Podcast, "Why Is It Good?" and a limited episode podcast "Beatles Come to America" with co-host The Beatles Guru Brooke Halpin. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support
Dave Pietro’s curiosity and workmanship have been the foundation of his decade’s long career as an internationally touring musician. He explains the value of truly listening— even if what you’re hearing confuses or frightens you at first. We touch on his gigging history starting in New York, his new album New Road: Iowa Memoirs, and how immersing oneself in a culture can fundamentally change your understanding of pretty much everything. By Curtis Killian | February 10, 2016 When Donny McCasslin '88 and his jazz quartet were enlisted by David Bowie H'99 to record as the backing band for what became his 25th and final album Blackstar, stylized as ★, the Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer and bandleader was ready for the moment. "David encouraged us to try anything and everything that we heard," McCaslin says on the three weeks he spent working with Bowie and his longtime producer Tony Visconti early last year, recordingmostly live with his group (keyboardist Jason Lindner, drummer Mark Guiliana and bassist Tim Lefebvre). "He said something to me in the beginning like, Donny, I don’t know what’s gonna happen with this but let’s just have some fun." A fixture of the New York Jazz scene for nearly thirty years, McCaslin has worked as bandleader and as sideman for the likes of Steps Ahead, Maria Schneider Orchestra and professor fellow alumnus Gary Burton '62, who he began touring with his senior year. "Being at Berklee and thrust into this world where the boundaries of music or styles were pretty fluid, that was really a great experience to help me to broaden my musical language," McCaslin says, a dexterity clearly displayed through his various contributions on Blackstar as musician, bandleader and orchestrator. "I’m grateful to have been able to be in that space for a prolonged amount of time in relation to the jazz world," McCaslin says. "The joy on David’s face when we would have that take and felt it, everybody was feeling that it was the take and seeing the joy on his face was very moving to me. It was beautiful." In this episode of Life After Berklee, just weeks after the album's release and shock of Bowie's death, McCaslin shares insight into the recording process and how he and his jazz quartet from New York City became David Bowie’s final backing band. https://www.berklee.edu/news/podcast-donny-mccaslin-88-david-bowie
This collection isn't necessarily a "best of 2015" , it's just some of my favorite jazz tunes from the past year. It begins with one of my favorite albums of the year in any genre - The Thompson fields by The Maria Schneider Orchestra. The title track is remarkable. The Jaga Jazzist album was a big surprise for me. I've listen to them on and off for years but had lost interest for some reason. The track in this mix is strange, futuristic electronic/jazz cut that I have listened to a ton this year. The other two great discoveries were albums from Kamasi Washington and Kendrick Scott Oracle, definitely worth checking out. Is there any jazz out there that really engaged you in 2015? I'd love to hear about it in the comments. Enjoy T R A C K L I S T : 00:00 Maria Schneider Orchestra - The Thompson Fields 09:50 Jaga Jazzist - Oban 15:12 Kamasi Washington - The Magnificent 7 20:57 Andy Sheppard - Tipping Point 26:37 Kendrick Scott Oracle - we are the drum 32:00 food - this is not a miracle 36:00 Hidden Orchestra - the Revival 39:50 Chris Potter Underground Orchestra - Imaginary Cities(part 2) 48:12 Jakob Bro - Copenhagen 52:24 Giovanni Guidi Trio - The might it rained forever 59:10 Vijay Iyer Trio - Geese 63:45 Ben Monder - Zythum 70:10 Maria Schneider Orchestra - Walking by Flashlight 75:10 end

As usual with these mixes there is one song in particular that gets the ball rolling and in this case it's the title track from the album The Thompson Fields by the Maria Schneider Orchestra. The whole album is wonderful collection open, airy jazz tracks and the title song is just stunning. Definitely one of the most beautiful songs released this year, second only to Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell. The rest of the mix is your standard Sunday morning mix. Maybe a bit more jazz in this one. Other than the Davis Sylvian tune most of the cuts are fairly new. This Feature is a tribute to National Woman's Day and this Orchestra led by Maria Schneider is one of the leading Jazz organizations of today.
