The Other Side Of The Bell - A Trumpet Podcast

About Scott: Dr. Scott Belck currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) where he directs the CCM Jazz Orchestra and teaches applied Jazz Trumpet. He is a founding member of critically acclaimed Tromba Mundi contemporary trumpet ensemble and has toured as a member of Grammy Award winning funk legend Bootsy Collins' Funk Unity Band as lead trumpet. He has served as trumpet and cornet soloist with the Air Force Band of Flight in Dayton, Ohio where he also held the post of musical director for the Air Force Night Flight Jazz Ensemble. He is the Founding Artistic Director Emeritus of the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra.   His playing credits include recordings lead trumpet/guest soloist with the Cincinnati Pops featuring the Manhattan Transfer and John Pizzarelli, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Van Dells, and jazz soloist with the University of North Texas One O'clock Lab Band with whom he recorded four CDs as jazz soloist and section trumpet. He has performed as principal/lead trumpet with the St. Louis Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lexington Philharmonic, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and as section trumpet with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra and the Duluth Festival Opera. Vocalist Theo Bleckmann is in a league and a category of his own. Equally dazzling when interpreting the music of Kate Bush or singing the songs of Charles Ives, he made his ECM Records leader debut in 2017 with his album “Elegy”. More recently, he collaborated with the brass quartet The Westerlies for their haunting record “This Land.” Theo and I talked about his approach to recording versus performing live, his cherished collaborations with drummer John Hollenbeck and pianist Shai Maestro, and why clarity and authenticity are so important in creativity. Según la flautista y saxofonista Anna Webber, entre su forma de tocar y de componer había una brecha que ahora trata de cerrar con "Idiom", disco doble grabado en dos formatos: junto a Matt Mitchell (piano) y John Hollenbeck (batería), su Simple Trio; con un Large Ensemble de doce músicos, entre los que se encuentra el trompetista Adam O'Farrill, el trombonista Jacob Garchik y el baterista Satoshi Takeishi, entre otros. Dice la pianista suiza Irène Schweizer que siempre ha sentido "afinidad" con los músicos negros, entre ellos el baterista estadounidense Hamid Drake. Con él presenta "Celebration", un directo en el festival Konfrontationen de Austria que se suma a la larga lista de dúos de piano y batería registrados por Schweizer desde 1986. Se las arreglaron para poder grabar en plena pandemia entrando juntos en el estudio pero sin necesidad de verse las caras. Uno de los músicos padece problemas respiratorios que aconsejaban tomar precauciones extra. Kuhl studied and performed in numerous genres, making him a first call drummer for any situation. Trumpeter/Composer Dave Ballou can be heard in a variety of settings; from solo trumpet improvisations to large ensembles. His recordings can be found on the Steeplechase, CleanFeed and pfMentum record labels. Ballou has performed or recorded with Rabih Abou-Kahlil, Steely Dan, Michael Formanek, Mary Halvorson, Woody Herman, Andrew Hill, John Hollenbeck, Sheila Jordan, Oliver Lake, Dave Liebman, Dewey Redman, Maria Schneider and Gunther Schuller. His compositions have been performed and recorded by the Meridian Arts Ensemble, trumpeter Jon Nelson, French hornist Adam Unsworth, saxophonist Ellery Eskelin and the TILT Brass Ensemble. Ballou is a Professor of Music at Towson University and Division Leader of the Jazz and Commercial Music Division. He is the founding director of the Bill and Helen Murray Jazz Residency. Luke Stewart is a DC/NYC-based musician and organizer of important musical presentations. He has a presence in the national and international professional music community. He was profiled in the Washington Post in early 2017 as “holding down the jazz scene,” selected as “Best Musical Omnivore” in the Washington City Paper's 2017 “Best of DC,” chosen as “Jazz Artist of the Year” for 2017 in the District Now, and in the 2014 People Issue of the Washington City Paper as a “Jazz Revolutionary,” citing his multifaceted cultural activities throughout DC. In DC his regular ensembles include experimental jazz trio Heart of the Ghost, Low Ways Quartet featuring guitarist Anthony Pirog, and experimental rock duo Blacks' Myths. He has been compiling a series of improvisational sound structures for Upright Bass and Amplifier. Steward holds a BA in International Studies and a BA in Audio Production from American University, and an MA in Arts Management and Entrepreneurship from the New School. Multi-reedman John Dierker has become a major improvisational stylist, interweaving concepts augmented by howling lines, injections of blues-drenched choruses and Albert Ayler-like display of energy." Theron and Tom head backstage with Chris Coles, a musician, composer and educator from Cleveland, to talk about his career, dive into the entry points for exploring jazz music, and discuss his Nine Lives Project, which deals with the Charleston church shooting in 2015. The Nine Lives Project is an interdisciplinary multi-movement suite intended to heighten awareness of ongoing racial injustice in America. Chris first performed Nine Lives in 2015 as a workshop at the Bop Stop in Cleveland, before eventually turning it into a 40-minute performance piece thanks in part to a Knight Arts Challenge grant. The piece made its Akron debut at the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival in 2019. (Learn more about the project at the Nine Lives Facebook page.) Chris has performed with several local and international jazz musicians, studied with some of the great pioneers in jazz, and is an instructor in the school of music at Kent State University. Some of his recent accomplishments include being a participant at The Banff Workshop for Jazz and Creative music in Alberta, Canada, playing at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Festival in West Virginia with the Dana Saxophone quartet, performing at the International Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., and premiering a commissioned work by John Hollenbeck at the Whitney Art Museum Composers Workshop. Chris is one of Cleveland's Most Interesting People for 2021, as selected by Cleveland magazine.

In his twenty five year long career he has worked with everyone from Laurie Anderson to Uri Caine, Philip Glass to Ann Hamilton, John Hollenbeck to Sheila Jordan. He leads several projects and most recently presented Schubert's song cycle “Die Winterreise” on an ice rink, with skaters from the Ice Theatre of New York. Theo is a wildly creative individual and a complete joy to spend an afternoon with.

Anna Webber is a composer/performer, saxophonist/flautist who has been living in Brooklyn since 2008. Originally from British Columbia, her playing is marked by a subtle virtuosity and keen sense of rhythm. Her band Simple Trio, with John Hollenbeck and Matt Mitchell, is one of the best and most original in the current Brooklyn scene. She's worked with Jen Shyu, Dan Weiss, Harris Eisenstadt and others. Anna studied music at McGill University in Montreal before moving to New York City in 2008. She holds master's degrees from both Manhattan School of Music and the Jazz Institute Berlin.

Bleckmann has most recently appeared as a special guest on recordings by Ambrose Akinmusire for Blue Note Records and Julia Hülsmann’s trio for ECM Records. In January 2017, ECM will release Bleckmann’s recording with his new Elegy Quintet, produced by legendary label head and founder, Manfred Eicher. Bleckmann has collaborated with musicians, artists, actors and composers, including Ambrose Akinmusire, Laurie Anderson, Uri Caine, Philip Glass, Ann Hamilton, John Hollenbeck, Sheila Jordan, Phil Kline, David Lang, Kirk Nurock, Frances MacDormand, Ben Monder, Michael Tilson Thomas, Kenny Wheeler, John Zorn, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and, most prominently, Meredith Monk, with whom Bleckmann worked as a core ensemble member for over fifteen years. El baterista John Hollenbeck da vida a las "Songs I like a lot" junto a la Frankfurt Radio Big Band. Temas dispares que van de la música vaquera a Freddie Mercury pasando por Ornette Coleman y en el que cuenta con la colaboración de las voces de Kate McGarry y Theo Blackman y con el pianista Gary Versace. En esta edición de "Club de Jazz" del 13 de marzo de 2013 recordamos las recientes giras de Made to Break y Digital Primitives y escuchamos el proyecto Side A de Ken Vandermark, Havard Wiik y Chad Taylor a través de su "A new margin". "desde mi cadiera" Jesús Moreno presenta la "Darrera nit de maig a l´Heliogàbal del cuarteto del baterista Ivo Sans con los saxofonistas César Joaniquet y Marcel·lí Bayer y el contrabajista Masa Kamaguchi. El tango y el jazz gitano se dan la mano en Cordal Swing y su "Grappelliana" que presenta Alberto Varela en el "Jazz Porteño". Anxo dedica un nuevo capítulo de los "Ritmos Latinos" al recopilatorio "Fetén (Rare jazz recordings from Spain 1961-1974)" con grabaciones de Lou Bennett y Juan Carlos Calderón.
