For this bonus episode, the Shakespeare and Company podcast welcomes Jeremy Pelt, renowned jazz trumpeter and author of Griot: Examining the Lives of Jazz Great Storytellers. In conversation with Alex Freiman, Pelt discusses the evolution of jazz, the influence of oral traditions, and the importance of documenting firsthand accounts from legendary musicians. Reflecting on his early days at Berklee, his experiences touring worldwide, and his deep reverence for jazz elders like Roy Haynes and Wayne Shorter, Pelt shares insights into both the triumphs and struggles of jazz musicians. He also addresses the debate over the term “jazz,” the intersection of jazz and hip-hop, and the ongoing challenge of preserving the music's integrity in an industry that often sidelines its true practitioners. Listen in for a compelling exploration of jazz history, culture, and the passion that fuels one of its modern torchbearers.*Jeremy Pelt has become one of the preeminent young trumpeters within the world of jazz. Forging a bond with the Mingus Big Band very early on, as his career progressed, Pelt built upon these relationships and many others which eventually lead to collaborations with some of the genre's greatest masters. These projects include performances and recordings with Cliff Barbaro, Keter Betts, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ravi Coltrane, Frank Foster, Winard Harper, Jimmy Heath, Vincent Herring, John Hicks, Charli Persip, Ralph Peterson, Lonnie Plaxico, Bobby Short, Cedar Walton, Frank Wess, Nancy Wilson and The Skatalites, to name a few.Pelt frequently performs alongside such notable ensembles as the Roy Hargrove Big Band, The Village Vanguard Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Big Band, and is a member of the Lewis Nash Septet and The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes. As a leader, Pelt has recorded ten albums and has toured globally with his various ensembles, appearing at many major jazz festivals and concert venues.Pelt's recordings and performances have earned him critical acclaim, both nationally and internationally. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal by legendary jazz writer and producer, Nat Hentoff, and was voted Rising Star on the trumpet, five years in a row by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association. Pelt is currently touring throughout the United States and Europe in support of his latest release, "Soundtrack".Alex Freiman is a guitarist, composer, and singer trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Drawing from jazz, blues, soul, and funk, he masterfully blends these influences with energy and virtuosity, creating music that is both groovy and sophisticated. After collaborating with major figures on the French and international scenes, including Stéphane Belmondo, he released his debut album as a leader, Play It Gentle, in 2017. Recorded with Léon Parker (drums), Fred Nardin (organ), and special guest Stéphane Belmondo, this album reflects his passion for improvisation and sonic elegance. Constantly seeking innovation, he launched Alex Freiman & The Hot Sauce, an explosive project where jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop intertwine. His EP In The Beginning (September 2024) marks the start of a new musical era, followed by the singles We Are One (January 2025), featuring rapper Tiemoko, and This Is The Hot Sauce (March 2025), affirming his vibrant and innovative musical identity. In 2025, Alex Freiman continues his groove exploration with a new album and fresh collaborations. Alex Freiman & The Hot Sauce will also be performing in Paris and across France, delivering electrifying shows where improvisation and energy collide.Listen to Alex Freiman's latest EP, In The Beginning: https://open.spotify.com/album/5iZYPMCUnG7xiCtsFCBlVa?si=h5x3FK1URq6SwH9Kb_SO3w Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Tonight's Jazz Feature is an indirect tribute to my late Mother, whose Birthday Anniversary is today: May 20. This album was one of her favorites. It is a classic by the great vibist and Modern Jazz pioneer, Milt Jackson. Jackson and his co-star here is flutist and tenor saxophonist Frank Wess. Wess of course is one of the great practitioners of Jazz flute. The rhythm section is superb and led by Hank Jones on piano and indeed he's one of the finest. Eddie Jones (no relation to Hank) is solid on bass and Kenny Clarke is his usual masterful self on drums. All of this was recorded for Savoy Records on October 28, 1955 and it's one of Milt Jackson's many gems and is tonight's Jazz feature. Enjoy!

The clarinet has been an endangered species for most of the last 50 years, and despite much admiration for modern-day exponents such as Anat Cohen, it remains on the outer fringes of jazz. Hot Box takes a look at clarinet from the heyday of Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet and Jimmie Noone through to today's most admired exponent, Anat Cohen. Some critics have suggested its decline is due to the difficulty of playing it: “It was invented by three people who never met each other” was the comment of Basie band sax player Frank Wess!

Jollity (Dorothy Ashby) 2. Pawky (Dorothy Ashby) 3. Canto de Ossanha (Baden Powell- Vinicius de Moraes) 4, Cause I Need It (Dorothy Ashby) *Suscríbete a nuestro canal. An award-winning composer, arranger, producer, educator and trombonist, Finzer is bringing the joy and power of Jazz to traditional fans and the most modern 21st century audiences. He’s on a mission to be a passionate voice defining the sound of Jazz in this age while also bringing street cred to the trombone with a bold, tight sound. Born into the musical world (Mom Sherry Finzer is an international flutist), Finzer developed a fascination for the music of Duke Ellington and found himself, in high school, performing at the annual Essentially Ellington competition of Jazz at Lincoln Center. It was then that he decided to pursue a life in music himself. His budding talent was recognized by Wycliffe Gordon who began a mentorship by writing four pieces for the young Finzer while he attended the Eastman School of Music. Nick went on to get his masters at Juilliard’s prestigious Jazz program where he was mentored by trombone legend Steve Turre. In 2011 Nick was the winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop’s National Jazz Trombone Competition and was a finalist in the 2010 International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition. Two tracks appearing on Nick’s debut album “Exposition” (Outside in Music) garnered Finzer a pair of accolades: The prestigious American Society of Composers and Performers (ASCAP)’s Herb Alpert Award for young composers (2013 & 2015)Famed trombonist and mentor Wycliffe Gordon called Finzer “a new voice [in] the pantheon of upcoming trombone greats in the making” and added “Nick's CD is a glowing example of things to come.” When away from NYC, Finzer can be found touring the globe not only with his own projects, but as part of Anat Cohen’s Tentet, teaching workshops and masterclasses, and appearing with YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox. He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2009 for his work on 30 Rock. He has appeared in numerous films as an actor and voice actor. 30 Rock-”Liz Lemon, head writer of the sketch comedy show "TGS with Tracy Jordan", must deal with an arrogant new boss and a crazy new star, all while trying to run a successful television show without losing her mind.” Judah Friedlander-American actor and comedian, known for playing the role of writer Frank Rossitano on the NBC sitcom 30 Rock. The Truth About Santa Claus: Movie The Last O.G.-How Tracy Morgan’s Near-Death Experience Inspired His New Comedy, The Last O.G. Spine Health for Musicians-Could the Alexander Technique Relieve Your Chronic Back and Neck Pain? The Matrix-A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers. Malcolm Gladwell: Outliers-In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? Supple-compliant often to the point of obsequiousness Oberlin-Oberlin College is a private liberal arts college in Oberlin, Ohio. Founded as the Oberlin Collegiate Institute in 1833 by John Jay Shipherd and Philo Stewart, it is the oldest coeducational liberal arts college in the United States and the second oldest continuously operating co-educational institute of higher learning in the world. J.J. Johnson-James Louis Johnson (January 22, 1924 – February 4, 2001) was an American jazz trombonist, composer and arranger. Johnson was one of the earliest trombonists to embrace bebop. Jack Teagarden-Weldon Leo "Jack" Teagarden (August 20, 1905 – January 15, 1964) was a jazz trombonist and singer. According to critic Scott Yannow of Allmusic, Teagarden was the preeminent American jazz trombone player before the bebop era of the 1940s and "one of the best jazz singers too". Teagarden's early career was as a sideman with the likes of Tommy Dorsey, Paul Whiteman and lifelong friend Louis Armstrong before branching out as a bandleader in 1939 and specializing in New Orleans Jazz-style jazz until his death. Slide Hampton-Locksley Wellington "Slide" Hampton (born April 21, 1932) is an American jazz trombonist, composer and arranger. Described by critics as a master composer, arranger and uniquely gifted trombone player, Hampton's career is among the most distinguished in jazz. As his nickname implies, Hampton's main instrument is slide trombone, but he also occasionally plays tuba and flugelhorn. John Coltrane-John Coltrane departed this mortal plane more than fifty years ago; today he remains among us, more alive than ever. His sound continues to grab the ears of an ever-widening circle of fans. His legend is stone solid: planted firmly in our culture as that of any 20th century musical giant. His saxophone sound—brooding, searching, dark—is still one of the most recognizable in modern jazz. His influence stretches over styles and genres, and transcends cultural boundaries. The modern ideal of music serving a deeply spiritual, connective purpose? A defining facet of John Coltrane. Eddie Palmieri-Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years, Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. Conrad Herwig-New York-based jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig is considered one of the world’s complete jazz musicians, atop both the performing and jazz educational fields with an abundance of composer and arranger credits, as well. To date, he has released 20 recordings as a leader in addition to contributing to nearly 200 other recording sessions with some of the most notable artists in jazz. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra, Joe Lovano and Tom Harrell, among many others. The Latin Side of John Coltrane-John Coltrane's music has been interpreted many ways since his death in 1967 but rarely in a Latin jazz setting. Trombonist Conrad Herwig, in putting together this project, wisely avoided using any other tenor or soprano saxophonists, instead gathering together several trumpeters, either Ronnie Cuber or Gary Smulyan on baritone, flutist Dave Valentin and a crack Latin rhythm section. By varying the instrumentation and personnel on each selection, Herwig has succeeded in continually casting Coltrane's music in a new light. The opening and closing versions of "Blessing" have Milton Cardona vocalizing a brief prayer. All of the other music (with the exception of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue") are 'Trane compositions. Herwig is well showcased, as is trumpeter Brian Lynch and most of the sidemen. The results are quite fresh, often infectious and unpredictable. A fine tribute to the flexibility of John Coltrane's 1960-64 music. Iridium NY-The Iridium Jazz Club is a jazz club located on Broadway in New York City. The club hosts weekly performances by John Colianni, and also featured weekly performances by Les Paul for nearly fifteen years. FEZ UNDER TIME CAFE: 1992 - 2005-The Fez under Time Cafe, known as the Fez, was a nightclub and restaurant on Lafayette Street and Great Jones Street in New York City's NoHo District. The club closed in February 2005. It hosted numerous musicians and comedians, including Rufus Wainwright, Stella, Richard Barone, Carly Simon and Jeff Buckley. Mingus Big Band-The Mingus Big Band celebrates the music of composer/bassist Charles Mingus, who died in 1979. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, this 14-piece band performed Thursday MBB nights from 1991 to 2004 at Fez under Time Cafe in New York City. It maintained weekly residencies in the city from May 2004 until October 2008, when it began “Mingus Mondays” at Jazz Standard where it alternates with the Mingus Orchestra and Mingus Dynasty. Bishop Nathaniel Townsley-Listen on Spotify Gospel Jubilee-Facebook page Nathaniel Townsley Jr.-Discogs Jimmy “Preacher” Robins- Jimmy Robins In terms of gruff intensity and roaring power few singers could match Jimmy Robbins. In my view he never made a bad record although his career was so fragmented - he recorded for several labels and under a couple of names - he's never really gotten either the visibility or success his wonderful voice deserved. Robins may just have been the best "underground" artist of them all and fully warranted his "Preacher" tag. In addition he wrote most of the songs he recorded and was a fine keyboard player, specialising in the Hammond B3 organ. Robins Nest Harlem-Photo Sugar Shack Harlem-”It is sadly the end of an era. After months of speculation The Sugar Shack has closed it’s doors for good. The site of impromptu gatherings, first dates, comedy shows, poetry readings and down and dirty dancing has gone from being The Sugar Shack to Striver’s Cafe and back to The Sugar Shack. In the late ’90s and early ’00 (when it was selected the Village Voice Best of 2000) you could drop into the Shack any night of the week and find something fun going on inside behind the velvet curtain. Whether it was fight night, a live band or a dj spinning the turntables, neighborhood patrons will certainly miss the good memories created at The Sugar Shack over the years. Londell’s Harlem-”Located on the threshold of Striver's Row, a historical section of Harlem, Londel's is rich in cuisine, entertainment, and social life. Known to original patrons as ''Striver's Row'', Londel's has expanded steadily and has maintained its traditional flavor in Southern, Creole, and American Comfort Cuisine.” Showman’s-”This soulful haunt of Harlem's old guard has been home to the greats (e.g. Sara Vaughan, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Pearl Bailey) since 1942, having moved to its current location in August,1998. A Hammond B-3 organ graces the stage, and is put to good use by Danny Mixon, Seleno Clarke, Nathan Lucas and Preacher Robins among others. Hammond Organ-”The Hammond organ is an electric organ, invented by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert and first manufactured in 1935. Various models have been produced, most of which use sliding drawbars to specify a variety of sounds. Until 1975, Hammond organs generated sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup, and then strengthening the signal with an amplifier so it can drive a speaker cabinet. Around two million Hammond organs have been manufactured. The organ is commonly used with, and associated with, the Leslie speaker.” Jack McDuff- Eugene McDuff (September 17, 1926 – January 23, 2001), known professionally as "Brother" Jack McDuff or "Captain" Jack McDuff, was an American jazz organist and organ trio bandleader who was most prominent during the hard bop and soul jazz era of the 1960s, often performing with an organ trio. He is also credited with giving guitarist George Benson his first break. Stanley Turrentine- Stanley William Turrentine (April 5, 1934 – September 12, 2000) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He began his career playing R&B for Earl Bostic and later soul jazz recording for the Blue Note label from 1960, touched on jazz fusion during a stint on CTI in the 1970s. He was described by critic Steve Huey as "renowned for his distinctively thick, rippling tone [and] earthy grounding in the blues." Turrentine was married to organist Shirley Scott in the 1960s, with whom he frequently recorded, and was the younger brother of trumpeter Tommy Turrentine. Joey Defrancesco- Joey DeFrancesco (born April 10, 1971) is an American jazz organist, trumpeter, and vocalist. He has released more than 30 albums, including recordings with Miles Davis and Jimmy Smith. DeFrancesco signed his first record deal at the age of 16 and has played internationally with musicians that include David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Larry Coryell, Frank Wess, John McLaughlin, Benny Golson, James Moody, Steve Gadd, Danny Gatton, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, Pat Martino, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, and recorded with musicians that included Ray Charles, Bette Midler and Van Morrison. LinkedIn-LinkedIn is the top online site for professional, social and career networking. The site functions as an online directory of individual professionals and organizations, and facilitates the process of professional networking without having to leave your office. Should Musicians Use Linkedin? Surround yourself with the right people- Do the people around you drag you down? Do they make you doubt your abilities? Or do they always agree with your ideas... and never seem to have new ones? Then it's possible you're surrounded by people who will not help you become successful. Love Monkey-A music scout gets fired from his corporate job and gets a job at a smaller indie label. Sync Summit- Sync Summits are high-level, focused networking events held in New York, Hollywood and Paris where top music supervisors, heads of music in visual and interactive media (TV, Film, Video Games, Advertising, the Internet and Mobile), label executives, publishers, music libraries, composers, artists, technologists, legal, accounting, brand managers and service providers gather for two days of discussion, networking and dealmaking. Happy Humpday with Jon -Jon Arons dancing his heart out with a trombone. Delayed Gratification-Delayed gratification, or deferred gratification, describes the process that the subject undergoes when the subject resists the temptation of an immediate reward in preference for a later reward. Generally, delayed gratification is associated with resisting a smaller but more immediate reward in order to receive a larger or more enduring reward later.[1] A growing body of literature has linked the ability to delay gratification to a host of other positive outcomes, including academic success, physical health, psychological health, and social competence. Ralph Rolle-Drummer Gas, Ass or Grass-What some people consider the rules of hitchhiking, where the hitchhiker, upon pickup or throughout the trip, must either provide: 1)Gas for the car, 2)Some type of sexual satisfaction, or 3)Some type of drug, usually marijuana. Kinky Boots-Kinky Boots is a Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the 2005 British film Kinky Boots, written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth and mostly inspired by true events, the musical tells the story of Charlie Price. Having inherited a shoe factory from his father, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots and save the business. In the process, Charlie and Lola discover that they are not so different after all. Gender norms-Our society has a set of ideas about how we expect men and women to dress, behave, and present themselves. LGBTQ-LGBTQ is the more commonly used term in the community; possibly because it is more user friendly! Limbic System-The limbic system is the part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses. Black holes and baby Universes-This book is a collection of essays and lectures written by Hawking, mainly about the makeup of black holes, and why they might be nodes from which other universes grow. Hawking discusses black hole thermodynamics, special relativity, general relativity, and quantum mechanics. Hawking also describes his life when he was young, and his later experience of motor neurone disease. The book also includes an interview with Professor Hawking. Naturalism Philosophy-In philosophy, naturalism is the "idea or belief that only natural (as opposed to supernatural or spiritual) laws and forces operate in the world."[1] Adherents of naturalism (i.e., naturalists) assert that natural laws are the rules that govern the structure and behavior of the natural universe, that the changing universe at every stage is a product of these laws. We, the management of WAGRadio, have always asked one thing of DJZigZag - work with your heart.  Work with your heart, over your brain.  "Don't overthink things", we constantly remind our cardinal host and producer.   It's with that credo in mind that we present the first of possibly two, 2018 Groovin' Blue Christmas shows.  To the keenest observers amongst you, this Groovin' Blue may seem similar to the end-of-season holiday show from last year.  It is the same program.  We implored the Zigmeister to repeat last year's show  - with a modicum of change - acknowledging it, in our opinion, as the pinacle of soulful, artistic Christmas New World African Music programming.  It represents our musical heart at this time of the year.  Luckily, that's how its original presenter / producers - DJZigZag and Sunny 'Sweet Daddy Fonk' Wong - feel about it too. As in years past, we offer you, the prepared listener, the seasonal music we love - without a host.  DJZigZag and Sweet Daddy Fonk will be taking a much-needed break and listening to the harmonies along with you.  We also dedicate the program, as we do every year, to those who find themselves confined, detained, under lock and key.  You are in our thoughts.  We hope the harmonious sounds that so move us - will bring you comfort and joy at this time of the year. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson is an acknowledged pioneer of Modern Jazz. Jackson s brought the vibes into the modern era. He was inspired mostly by Lionel Hampton but forged his own concept and sound on that instrument and gave birth and inspiration to people of his era like Terry Gibbs, Joe Roland, Cal Tjader and others and of course influenced the younger players like Gary Burton, Dave Pike and especially Bobby Hutcherson who in turn inspired present day players like Steve Nelson, Stefon Harris and Warren Wolf. Jackson was the most prominent voice of the famous Modern Jazz Quartet who were together for over 40 years. Jackson recorded a lot on his own and this album which is tonight's Jazz Feature is one of his gems. The album is called "Opus De Jazz" and aside from Jackson, the co-star is the great flutist/tenor saxophonist Frank Wess. Frank is on flute for 3 of the 4 tunes and plays tenor saxophone on one. Flute and vibes is a wonderful combination. Jackson and Wess are backed superbly by the elegant Hank Jones on piano, Eddie Jones (no relation) on bass and the great drummer Kenny Clarke. This is a delightful album that could convert the most anti-Jazz listener into a fan. Check out "Opus De Jazz" tonight for the real deal that's also easy on the ears.

We're featuring an interview with bassist Larry Gray on this week's episode.  Larry's multi-instrumental path has taken him through performance on guitar, flute, cello, and piano in addition to bass.  Larry is in high demand as a jazz bassist in Chicago, performing regularly for decades at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, and he teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Enjoy! About Larry Born on Chicago’s south side, Larry Gray is considered by many to be one of jazz music’s finest double bassists. His impressive versatility and uncommon musical curiosity keep him in demand as both a leader and sideman. Larry began his musical studies at the age of five when his father brought home an accordion and introduced him to his first teacher. Invigorated by this study, Larry added the guitar to his arsenal and studied piano seriously for many years thereafter. It was not until he was in his twenties that he decided to switch to the double bass. Larry went on to study classical music extensively, eventually adding the cello to his long list of loved instruments. His principal teachers were Joseph Guastafeste, longtime principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Karl Fruh, a highly regarded soloist and teacher. Under Mr. Fruh's guidance, he received bachelors and masters degrees in cello performance from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. Throughout his long and varied career, Larry has worked with numerous exceptional artists and jazz legends, including McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Danilo Perez, Branford Marsalis, Benny Green, Freddy Cole, Benny Golson, Steve Turre, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Fortune, Ira Sullivan, Junior Mance, David "Fathead" Newman, Willie Pickens, Ann Hampton Callaway, Charles McPherson, Antonio Hart, Jackie McLean, Sonny Stitt, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Al Cohn, Randy Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Kurt Elling, Eric Alexander, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Wilbur Campbell, Eddie Harris, and Les McCann. In addition, he has collaborated with guitarists Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, and Tal Farlow, as well trumpeters Donald Byrd, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Tom Harrell, among others. Larry continues to tour extensively, performing at jazz festivals and clubs around the globe, including the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Havana Jazz Festival, Rio Sao Paulo Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, ECM Festival in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, the Poznan Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Montreaux Detroit Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Village Vanguard, Blue Note (New York and Tokyo), Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, with such jazz luminaries as Marian McPartland, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Barry Harris, Dorothy Donegan, Monty Alexander, Frank Wess, Joe Williams, Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, Kenny Drew Jr., and most recently, Ramsey Lewis. As a classical musician, Larry played several seasons with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, including a year as principal bass. He worked on many occasions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under master conductors Erich Leinsdorf, Rafeal Kubelik, Carlo Maria Guilini, and Sir George Solti. He also was the featured double bassist with Lyric Opera for the world premiere of the opera Amistad. Larry is an arranger and composer whose work has been widely recognized as uniquely melodic and exceptionally refined. His discography includes 1,2, 3,..., on Chicago Sessions, the solo bass record, Gravity, One Look, and Solo + Quartet, all on Graywater Records, as well as the Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson collaborations Meant to Be and Simple Pleasures. He can also be heard on the Ramsey Lewis recordings Appassionata, Time Flies, and With One Voice, and the latest release, Songs From the Heart. Larry also arranged and produced the critically acclaimed CD, Django by Ferro. Furthermore, Larry has recorded with Chet Baker, Curtis Fuller, Ira Sullivan, Lin Halliday, Willie Pickens, Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Bunky Green, Bob Moses, Irish flute-whistle virtuoso Laurence Nugent, pop sensations Linda Eder, Dennis DeYoung, and Peter Cetera, and songwriter Michael Smith, among others. In addition, Larry is a first-call studio musician, and his playing can be heard on many commercial radio and television jingles and studio projects as well as the PBS television series, Legends of Jazz, where he can be seen performing alongside Jim Hall, Benny Golson, Chris Potter, Phil Woods, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Clark Terry, and Roy Hargrove. In addition, Larry's original composition for double bass and guitar, Five Movements, was commissioned and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble at Symphony Center in Chicago. Most recently, Larry has composed two commissioned works for the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Tribute to the Bass Masters Suite was premiered at the Poznan Festival in Poland in 2008 to much acclaim. A second work, String Thing, was first presented in Chicago in October 2010 as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago Jazz in Chicago series. Larry also completed a collaborative project with bassists Rufus Reid and Joseph Guastafeste that was premiered in March of 2011 in Chicago. Larry Gray is also a dedicated teacher and is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also served for many years on the faculties at DePaul University and Northern Illinois University. Active as a clinician at high school and colleges and festivals thought North America, he also coaches various instrumentalists in jazz techniques as well as music theory, sight-singing, and composition. The great saxophonist and flutist Frank Wess died on Oct 30, 2013. He became famous playing with the Count Basie Band in the 1950s. His incredible career spanned both the big band and bebop eras. In this Jazz Perspective from 2007, Wess tells JazzCorner.com producer Reese Erlich that he really didn't have any problems playing bebop – except the drumming was so different. "Art Blakey was dropping those bombs," he said with a laugh. This Jazz Perspective includes Wess' playing from the Count Basie days as well as his CD 'Hank and Frank'.

This well organized session featured two great Chicago-born musicians who went to the famous DuSable High School and learned the nuts and bolts of music from the redoubtable Captain Walter Dyett. Green went onto play with the great Earl Hines' band in 1943 and Ammons became a star in the famous Billy Eckstine band in 1944-45. Ammons' birthday was April 14 (1925-1974) and Green's was April 16 (1923-1977. Tonight's program broadcast on April 15 honours their birthdays. Along with trombonist Green and tenor saxophonist Ammons....two of the most recognizable voices on their horns...are cornettist Nat Adderley and the "two Franks" from the Basie band Frank Foster and Frank Wess. Both are great tenor saxophonists and Wess is also heard on flute. The rhythm section is fine with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones (also from the Basie band) on bass and the youngest member of the musical Heath Family, drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Green penned two tunes and Ammons did one and Foster contributed the opener ("Juggin' Around") and Wess contributed one plus there is a delightful version of Cannonball Adderley's tune called "Sermonette". Foster and Wess helped arrange some of the tunes . This is a well run date that doesn't sprawl and is cohesive but leaves plenty of blowing room for everyone. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY Bennie Green and Gene Ammons. This date wasn't called "The Swingin'est" for nuthin'!

One of Jazz music's greatest drummers was Joseph Rudolph Jones who was better known as "Philly Joe" Jones to distinguish him from the older drummer who was associated with Count Basie: Jo (Jonathan) Jones. One of Philly Joe's last major projects was organizing a 10 piece band to play and revive the music of one of the most important composers in Jazz: Tadd Dameron. The band was called "Dameronia" and recorded two fine albums for the independent Uptown label. One has just been re-issued on CD and has won many accolades this year as "Re-issue of The Year". It was recorded in 1983 and features along with Philly Joe, who was one of Dameron's closest friends, many people who had worked with Tadd. Tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin is one of the prominent soloists but others are heard to good advantage like pianist Walter Davis Jr.,baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne, alto saxophonist Frank Wess, trombonist Benny Powell and others. The original Dameron arrangements were collated by trumpeter Don Sickler who was a great help to Philly Joe in putting this project together. This is a great tribute to Tadd Dameron, who not only was one of pioneers of Modern Jazz but one of it's greatest composers who should be mentioned along with Monk, Mingus and Ellington. Enjoy Dameronia!

This hard driving blues based modern Jazz session was co-led by two great products of a Chicago high school named DuSable which had a great music program headed by the legendary "Captain" Walter Dyett. One of the co-leaders is Bennie Green who was one of the early modern trombone masters. Although he isn't treated with the same reverence as J.J.Johnson, Bennie should be recognized as one of the pioneers of Modern Jazz. Gene Ammons is the other co-leader and he is now considered to be one of the major voices of the tenor saxophone. Gene had a huge sound and a way of playing and phrasing that has influenced scores of players. Sadly Bennie died in obscurity in 1977 and Gene passed away in 1974, finally recognized and given stature after being slagged for many years by snobby Jazz critics. Green and Ammons put together a great band for this November 1958 session. The "two Franks" from the Basie band were added in the persons of tenor saxophonist/arranger Frank Foster and tenor saxophonist/flutist Frank Wess. A great added plus was the bright, salty cornet of Nat Adderley. Tommy Flanagan is on piano, Eddie Jones on bass also from the Basie band and Albert "Tootie" Heath is on drums. The tunes are mostly blues based and easy to take but the solos are inspired and the session is coherent and has direction. A good date and a fine showcase for all the talents involved and fun to listen to!
