$17,336.50. That's how much it cost Metro Vancouver taxpayers to send the Chair of Metro Vancouver to attend the 2023 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors Forum. Keep in mind, that's for just his airfare! He also attended the conference with two other civic politicians who sit on the Metro Vancouver board. Now Metro Vancouver Chair Mayor George Harvie is asking taxpayers to pay for his next junket to Amsterdam before he is removed in that role on July 1st. Media are reporting this ticket for this trip is over $5,000. This is on top of the $20K+ taxpayers shelled out to send Mr. Harvie to Singapore. How should taxpayers react when they see Metro Vancouver directors flying all over the world when the costs for mega projects they are responsible for are ballooning out of control? The wastewater treatment plant in North Vancouver has gone from $700M to almost $4B in cost. The Iona wastewater treatment plant is now reportedly pegged at $12B and climbing in cost at a rate of $1B very six months. In this episode we dig a bit deeper into what exactly is happening at Metro Vancouver regarding travel expenses and more. In "The Way I See It" we ask whether it's time for our provincial politicians to step in and propose some reforms to provide for more accountability at this unelected and in many ways unaccountable governing body. Listen to several interviews which aired on CKNW and Global TV with hosts Jas Johal and Jill Bennett as well as reporter Catherine Urquhart. Our upcoming events segment also touches on New Westminster's Hyack Parade and the Heritage Home Tour. Three weeks ago, the nation's 13 worst performing super funds were revealed. On the list, was an industry fund most Australians would not have heard of called the “Energy Industries Superannuation Scheme”. It currently holds $6 billion of retirement savings on behalf of about 20,000 largely blue-collar workers in the electrical industry. It is also now the subject of serious allegations – revealed exclusively in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald – that member funds have been misspent on lavish Christmas parties, overseas junkets for senior management and a series of questionable sponsorship deals of local community and sporting clubs. Today on Please Explain, business reporter Charlotte Grieve joins Jess Irvine to discuss. Jeremy was a fascinating interview. I'd go so far to say the most articulate on this given topic: appraisal regulations. Who would expect such an animated interview on the driest of topics? His 2020 book, “Dispatches from the Cosmic Cobra Breeding Farm,” has sounded a clarion call – a throw down if you will. He exhorts appraisers to become activists. He asks appraisers to see the Appraisal Foundation, a tiny 501(c)(3) nonprofit, as a Disney-like rights-management operation that has attached itself, along with its growing number of copyrighted products, to an entire profession. The organism then plows back some of its time and money into gaining further influence and further cementing its standing. Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder and philanthropist, is this week’s main guest. He talks to Ryan Heath about the work of his foundations, the next EU budget and the Oxfam scandal. And we talk to Politico health reporter Carmen Paun about how Gates has shaken up the world of public health — not without criticism. In our Dear Politico advice session, we hear from an assistant to a member of the European Parliament, who says their MEP is using their job to get trips to exotic locations at taxpayers’ expense. We also say EU WTF! about an Italian mayor’s plan to host a Nazi re-enactment and a Greek airline’s special stopover for MEPs — and give a big EU Thumbs Up to the Iberian lynx.

Fourth Estate is produced by 2SER 107.3 radio in Sydney and is broadcast across the Community Radio Network in Australia.

Jeff and Eric have a lot to say not just about movies but about certain movies’ fans, in this week’s edition of “Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider.” “Eclipse” is the best of the three “Twilight” movies so far — but don’t tell that to people who hate all things “Twilight,” no matter what, always, forever! “The Last Airbender” is a stifling and terrible adaptation of a popular cartoon series — but don’t tell that to people who love the cartoon series and can’t bear the thought of the movie being bad! (“Cyrus” is good, though. Go see it.) Jeff and Eric also discuss press junkets and the whoredom thereof, teen romances, and next week’s QOTW: What’s a movie you love that it seems like everyone else hates? They want new ideas for games to play, too. E-mail them at moviebspdx@gmail.com.
