Piney Point Lighthouse and keepers house, Maryland. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont This episode has three segments. In the first, photographer Pete Lerro describes a photo workshop he will be leading in Maine in October. In the third segment, Judianne Point discusses some exciting happenings at Chatham Light in Massachusetts and Beavertail Light in Rhode Island. Sandwiched in the middle is a conversation about the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park in Maryland. Ken Burke In 1836, a 35-foot-tall, conical lighthouse was built at Piney Point on the north side of the entrance to the Potomac River. It was the first of 11 lighthouses built on the river, and one of only three that survive today. The property was transferred to St. Mary's County in 1983. The buildings were restored in the years that followed, and the grounds were transformed into a public park. Today, the park, museum, and the lighthouse are open all year. Our guest today is Ken Burke, museum supervisor for the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park. Ben Ridings, curator for Cape May MAC in New Jersey, is the guest co-host. Elzie gets into the nitty-gritty of e-commerce and e-learning with Ken Burke, an esteemed entrepreneur who took his online commerce company to generate $2 billion in annual revenue. Ken shares his transition into leveraging AI in his microcasting platform, his dedication to curating seamless courses, and his withstanding belief in the significance of specializing in the early stages of entrepreneurship. This is a master class in focus, riding the wave of emerging trends, and the critical importance of sales and marketing.Episode Highlights:16:14 - When I talk about land and expanding, I focus on one market, on selling one set of feature sets, and on one message, right? So here's what I want to make sure of, there's another one of my sayings. When you try to talk to everyone, you talk to no one because your message doesn't resonate.18:54 - When the engine is starting to work, you, as the entrepreneur, don't need to attend to the engine every day. That's when, you know, you can actually move on to something else. You can either broaden your product, or you're going to naturally broaden your product or service offering.26:30 - So, by having that thought leadership position and having the ability to educate on an ongoing basis using webinars, which is in the olden days, that's what you used to do. Now we do it through e-learning. And so, all I'm doing is bringing that level of engagement that I had with my prospects, partners, and customers to light in a system that actually works, and you can just plug content in, and it does everything else for you. Episode 238 is with my friend Ken Burke of the Competing For Christ Podcast. I had the honor of being on Ken's podcast about a month ago so he was kind enough to join me on Unscripted. He is a former college athlete, husband, podcaster and passionate about Christ. In this episode you will have the opportunity to get to know Ken better and her the story behind why he started his podcast. You can find the Competing For Christ Podcast at this link - https://www.competingforchristpodcast.com/ From his website - I didn't start the podcast for recognition, for fame, or for thousands of downloads. I started it to give Jesus recognition for the things he had done in my life through sports. I started it to bring Jesus the fame and to maybe even see people come to know Him because of something that was said on an episode. Even when I forgot to press record before filming an ENTIRE episode one time (yes, that really happened. Sorry Cassee Wood!), Jesus was always on my mind. Sports have always been a huge part of my life. It was everything I thought about and what I lived for! But I didn't have my priorities right throughout most of my career. Instead of Jesus being at the forefront of my mind and instead of living for Him, I craved success, scholarships, and fame in a sports world that leaves you feeling dissatisfied, unworthy, and hurt. I realized after so many years of craving sports, they could NEVER leave me fulfilled. They could never bring me the true joy I feel with Jesus.  So many athletes struggle with this fact throughout their career. They struggle with wanting more and more in athletics, when they should be wanting more and more of Christ. That's why I started the podcast. It's for the athlete that doesn't know why their career ended early because of an injury. It's for the athlete that struggles with getting out of bed every morning because of the massive amounts of anxiety, depression, and sadness they feel every single day. It's for the athlete that wants to be a Christian influence on their teams, but doesn't know where to begin.  I was that athlete. I want to use this podcast not only to spread awareness of all the issues, problems, and topics that come up in sports, but to most importantly spread the Gospel and the good news that Christ provides. No matter what you're going through, no matter what you've done, Christ loves you and He is going to fight for you NO MATTER WHAT. This quote completely summarizes what this podcast is about: "God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called." I may have no clue what I'm doing, but God does. I had no experience in podcasting, interviewing, researching, or networking, but God didn't care. He can use anyone for His purpose.  So that's what this podcast is about. It's not a perfect podcast, the people featured in each episode are sinners like everyone in this world, and I am a flawed, broken, crazy person. But my only hope through this podcast is for you, the listener, to know Jesus. To know that even (ESPECIALLY) in sports, Jesus is with you.  “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/aaronconrad/support

Germany was the engine of European economy due to its large manufacturing sector which depended on cheap energy (gas) to be competitive globally. Germany's industry accounted for 36% share of total industrial output globally in 2015[1], making it largest exporter among all European countries. But that can't continue as German manufacturing industry depends on cheap energy and Russia controls almost all gas supplies into Europe through Nord Stream pipeline and other pipelines through Eastern Europe. How Does Entrepreneur Decision-Making Work in Real Life? Entrepreneur decision-making works in a variety of ways. Some entrepreneurs prefer to gather as much information as possible before making a choice, while others simply follow their gut instinct.Regardless of your decision-making style, there are some principles you should always keep in mind: Action creates momentum – If it feels like you've been stuck on the same problem for days or weeks without any progress, then it's time to take action. The more time spent thinking about how to solve a problem without actually solving it will just lead to frustration and an eventual loss of motivation. Test, measure and adjust – When trying out new ideas or testing different solutions for problems, don't be afraid to try things out quickly and see what works best (and what doesn't). Use this process as an opportunity for learning so that you can learn from your mistakes while they're still fresh in your mind instead of later down the road when they might have cost you too much money or time already! Tactics for Entrepreneur Decision-Making- the Decision Matrix There are three things that you need to do in order for you to make your own decision. List the criteria for the decision. This is the most difficult part because it requires thinking about what matters and why it matters, but it's also very important because you cannot weight a factor if you don't know what's being weighted in the first place. Make sure that all of your criteria are relevant and appropriate for this type of decision and don't get carried away by making too many or too few; this will help keep things simple later on when calculating weights (see below). Weight each of your criteria numerically based on their relative importance (so 1 = high priority, 5 = low priority).  To give an example: suppose I'm trying decide whether or not I want my ecommerce website design done by an agency rather than doing it myself. One of my criteria might be "time spent", since developing websites takes me a significant amount of time every month; another might be "cost", because agencies often charge more per hour than freelancers do; yet another could be "quality", since hiring someone else means outsourcing some portion of control over how well my site looks or functions. The point here is not just listing them—you must think about these factors as having varying levels of importance depending upon which option(s) from our list above we're considering at any given moment during our evaluation process (e.g., if we had chosen Option A instead of Option B above, then cost would no longer matter as much). Do the math After this, it's a simple question of multiplying and comparing: In a spreadhseet, you'd have the options or choices in rows down the left-hand column, and the criteria along column headers going left to right. for each possible option or choice, you'll have a score for each criterion For each of these criteria boxes, you'll need to multiple the score by the "weight" you've  which of multiplying the score of each possible option by the "weight" for  has the most weight then add up the total score across all the criteria for each decision. Finally, look at the relative scores of each decision. Like most maths, and all spreadsheets, it's so much easier to see it on an actual spreadsheet! Ken has created a spreadsheet that does the heavy lifting for you with a structured approach to decisions. Click here for his free entrepreneur decision matrix spreadsheet. Have 3-Year Financial Forecast! And Measure the Decisions  A key tool for Entrepreneur Decision-Making is financial forecasting. It is imperative that you know where your business is going, so it's important to have a financial forecast. You need a forecast for the next 3 years - and this is a shock to many entrepreneurs because they don't even have a one-year forecast.

Summary: We love having guests on Financial Survival Network that can help you bring your entrepreneur game to the next level. Ken Burke comes on this episode to tell you about how you can combine your idea for a business with action to supercharge your entrepreneurial career. Ken discusses multiple strategies for getting your business out there; it's important to not only manifest your goals, but to take action and put in the time/work to grow your business. Rather than imagining failure and looking for obstacles, start learning and get feedback from other entrepreneurs to make the necessary improvements. Highlights: -Ken is all about teaching people to embed growth in their businesses -Entrepreneurship is a learned skill; it is a passion to create something out of nothing -How do you know when your passion/business idea is legitimate? If you have an idea, remember that action creates momentum -Google competitors and other products/services to take steps towards your idea -A great entrepreneurial skill is patience and perseverance; you have to be in the game to win the game -Remember that things don't necessarily work on YOUR timeline -Make sure your idea is financially feasible. If you can't make money with your idea, you can't grow it or create meaningful impact -The law of attraction is helpful for clarity and directing your energy towards something that can manifest/produce itself. On the flip side, it doesn't provide the action that is needed to create something; you have to do this! -Fear of failure stops entrepreneurs from actually pursuing their idea because they fall into analysis paralysis -We are ultimately all hear to learn, grow, and develop; failure is impossible because these feats always teach us something and allow us to get better -The stronger the problem an entrepreneur is solving, the bigger the opportunity -Get feedback from other entrepreneurs and your target market. Your idea may need refinement so that people can understand it -People want to know that they can get out of your product; focus on the emotional output of your product Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Prosper: Five Steps to Thriving in Business and in Life EntrepreneurNOW

This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Ken Burke. Ken is a serial entrepreneur who built a massive enterprise software company and sold it for over $100 million. He then went on to create Entrepreneur NOW, a company that provides over 160 eLearning courses designed for entrepreneurs to help them start, grow and run their business. EntrepreneurNOW courses are also distributed all over the world on over 40 major eLearning sites. Ken has been featured on the INC 500, been named Entrepreneur of the Year, and has authored multiple books, most recently the best-seller, Prosper, 5 Steps to Thriving in Business and Life. Needless to say, Ken has a wealth of experience and knowledge on how to succeed as an entrepreneur, and I've brought him to squeeze every bit I can out of him. www.EntrepreneurNow.com www.KenBurke.com Entrepreneurship is in Ken's blood. It's all he knows. It started 25 years ago when he started MarketLive and rode the E-commerce wave. It took 4-5 years before it took off, but they became one of the major players in enterprise e-commerce software. Ken learned a lot through the experience and honed his skills. As things grew, he had to go through the ups and downs of growing and scaling a large business. Sequoia Capital was their large investor and at one point, Ken had his “Steve Jobs” moment where he was replaced as CEO. He was moved to the chairman role and the new “more experienced” CEO was brought in. It was a miserable failure. Ken came back in after 4 years and built things back up and made it very successful selling on a high to a large software conglomerate. He then started EntrepreneurNOW and is at it again and as he says, it having to learn a lot of things all over again. It's never the same path. At the 8 min mark, we talk about how it is different the second time around and just because he was successful once doesn't mean the same things will work in the next venture. Talk to us about the state of entrepreneurship as you see it… The latest batch of entrepreneurs has experienced another crash. Entrepreneurs have had to get a healthy dose of persistence and are learning that the notion of having a startup that maxes value in 3-4 years and the founders cash out is not a reality. The VC/Equity money is drying up. The cost of capital is much higher, and inflation is causing a lot of issues across the board. At the 13 min mark, we discuss persistence and Ken's thoughts. “You have to be in the game the win the game.” A lot of entrepreneurs take themselves off the field because they are not willing to persist through the major barriers they encounter. Don't expect things to always go as planned. Thoughts on the entrepreneur mindset? Ken wrote Prosper to help entrepreneurs in this area. It is impossible to fail because we are here to learn, grow, and develop. Challenges are part of the growth process. There is a lot of “You” in the business, so you must build a structure in the business that allows others to come up and help build the business and learn, grow, and develop. Do not let your ego get in the way. Be careful not to hamper the ability for your business to grow by injecting yourself too much in the business or letting limiting beliefs stop progress. Prosper: 5 Steps to Thriving in Business and Life. Can you take us through the 5 steps? You take you wherever you go. All your baggage comes with you into business or personal life. The healthier you are as a person, the better you are in business and life. Step 1: You must accept yourself. Don't self-sabotage. Step 2: Manage your ego. Your identity is not things, money, success, etc., it is internal. Step 3: Clarity. You need to know exactly where you are going and have a clear vision. Step 4: Take action. It comes down to consistent action. Fear is usually the #1 roadblock. Step 5: Gratitude. Serve and live with gratitude for all those around you and part of your journey. You must practice these things daily. What should entrepreneurs know about how to prepare themselves and their business for a sale and what did you learn through your process? It starts at the very beginning. Covet thy equity. Protect every ounce of equity that you have. Never give more than you have to give up when it comes to equity. Stair-step your investment. Take a little bit more at each step to bring your business 18 months into the future at a time. Be prepared for a “down round.” Manage your board and investor as if they are employees otherwise, they will manage you. They must know you are the leader and are in charge. Do not have a “parent-child” relationship with your board or investors. In the end, you are 100% accountable for everything in your business. When going to sell, you must prepare at least 1 year in advance. Think about how to maximize every aspect of value. Try to find a strategy investor and partner with them ahead of time. Anything you have seen that has worked for you consistently in building businesses? The bigger the problem, the more successful you can be. Start with the problem and find the solution. Finances. 3-5 year financial forecast and reviewing it each quarter keeps you on pace and helps to ensure you are on the right path. 5 clear, key initiatives per year that you are working toward that everyone knows in the business. Focus is widely important. Land and expand. Own a niche first and expand from there. Best advice for an entrepreneur just starting out? Focus. Focus. Focus. Master, then move on. Take action. Action creates momentum.   Best Quote: You have to be in the game the win the game. A lot of entrepreneurs take themselves off the field because they are not willing to persist through the major barriers they encounter.   Ken's Misfit 3: Practice the idea of fulfillment, joy, and happiness on a daily basis. Leave your ego at the door. Avoid the judgement of yourself and those around you. Know that it is impossible to fail. Growth is at the center of what you do.   Show Sponsors Shopify: Get a 14-day FREE trial at www.Shopify.com/misfit Simple Texting: Free for 14-day trial and 500 extra free credits! They want to protect their investment by funding valuable companies, making it important for entrepreneurs to position themselves as industry leaders. This is why intellectual property comes in handy. In this episode of the Innovations and Breakthroughs Podcast, Rich Goldstein hosts Ken Burke, the Founder of The EntrepreneurNOW! Network, to talk about strategies for gaining a competitive advantage through intellectual property (IP). They also discuss the role IP plays in the sale of a company, how to know when to get a patent, and the benefit of investing in a company with IP versus creating a product from scratch.

A fellow podcaster joins us! Ken Burke, a senior outfielder at Covenant College in Georgia joins The Christian Athlete Paradox to talk about his own podcast Competing for Christ, and his time as a Collegiate Athlete. Ken gives us a deeper look into his own faith walk and how God has used his trials and tribulations to propel him into an intimate relationship with the Lord. Making our campus, our teams, and our sport our mission field is not easy, but God's word guides us into how we're called to oppose the societal paradox between Christianity and Athletics, and truly compete in a manner that Christ be magnified.

Welcome back to America's leading higher education podcast! In this episode of The EdUp Experience, sponsored by EvoLLLution, we welcome Ken Burke, Founder & CEO, entrepreneurNOW! This episode is fascinating - Ken talks to us about the "compelling event" that is Coronavirus and how that affects all businesses. More organizations need to think about defining and offering a minimum viable product (MVP) to maximize revenue and gain market share. Along with that, Ken discusses the necessity of identifying the target audience - figure out what the consumer wants, not what you want to give them. And he tells us not to succumb to analysis paralysis, especially in higher education. Ken Burke began to understand that his life's purpose was to teach entrepreneurs while running the eCommerce business he'd started in 1996, MarketLive. After twenty years of running MarketLive, developing into a widely-published thought leader, keynote speaker, and coach to entrepreneurs, Ken sold the business and turned his attention full-time to helping entrepreneurs to launch, run, and grow their businesses. (Somehow, traveling the world just wasn't cutting it—though be sure to ask him about historic landmarks in Rome the next time you run into Ken!) Thanks so much for tuning in.
