Speaking of Higher Ed: Conversations on Teaching and Learning
Should I discuss AI with my students? How can I benefit from using AI? In this episode of Speaking of Higher Ed, David Joyner, PhD, joins us to explore these questions and how AI is transforming education, for students and educators. ChatGPT generated significant discussion when it launched in November 2022. Now, with more than a year of growing in understanding about generative AI, we are discovering what changes are necessary in the classroom. Joyner provides valuable insights from his research and classroom experiences, addressing educators seeking basic knowledge about ChatGPT and those aiming to deepen their understanding of generative AI. Educators aren't the only ones adapting to technologies like ChatGPT; students are also adjusting. This technology holds the potential to facilitate faster learning and improvement in targeted areas. However, it may require adjustments to assessments to maintain the desired level of rigor in evaluating student mastery of the material. We also discuss Joyner's new publication, A Teacher's Guide to Conversational AI, and the professional certificate program he developed, available on the edX online learning platform. Speaking of Higher Ed is produced by the Center for Instructional Innovation at Augusta University. Find more episodes and resources on our show page. Subscribe now so you don't miss an episode About David Joyner: Joyner is the Executive Director of Online Education & Online Master of Science in Computer Science program in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. The #1 problem with the marketing and consulting industry is fake gurus and "Master Classes". Nearly all of the people who host these or have some kind of agency blueprint course are fake and can't actually perform the marketing they're preaching for clients -- so they turn to teach you instead. For the most part, this is an episode where we take a dump on people who sell agency and marketing courses for over $500 and call a few of them out by name. It's worth it to note, Jake has actually taken one of these courses (and regrets it) while Cody has never. We don't only speak from an outsider's perspective looking in but also from firsthand experience. If you don't like what we have to say in this episode... you're probably not going to like owning a business. Real success takes real work and there are no shortcuts and that's what people are trying to get with these online Master Classes and blueprints. Got beef with what we're saying? Todd Zipper, President of Wiley Education Services, welcomes Zvi Galil, creator of the Online Master of Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Computing. Todd and Zvi discuss the launch of this program in 2014, which is regarded as the first affordable, fully online MOOC-based master's degree in the United States. Zvi disputes the premises that we should be afraid of online, and that in-person teaching is superior. Topics Discussed: • The impact of the first MOOC-based degree at Georgia Tech, and how it opened-up a larger, global market • Opportunities for universities to deliver online degrees at a fraction of the cost and to a larger student population • The expansion of high-quality and low-cost MOOC-based degrees into the undergraduate realm • How success was driven through the board of trustees, critical faculty, and an investment from a corporation Guest Bio Zvi Galil is the creator of the Online Master of Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Computing, who The Wall Street Journal dubbed “The man who made online college work.” Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, he earned BS and MS degrees in Applied Mathematics from Tel Aviv University, both summa cum laude. Zvi later obtained a PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University. In 1982, he joined the faculty of Columbia University, served as the chair of the Computer Science Department in 1989-1994, and became dean of The Fu Foundation School of Engineering & Applied Science in 1995-2007. In 2007, he returned to Tel Aviv University to serve as president. Zvi then took over as the third John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of Computing at Georgia Tech from July 2010 through June 2019. He has written over 200 scientific papers, edited five books, and has given more than 150 lectures in 20 countries. Zvi has served as editor in chief of two journals and as the chief computer science adviser in the United States to the Oxford University Press. Recently, he was named one of the 10 most influential computer scientists in the last decade by Academic Influence.
It is now possible to get an online degree as a Master of Infrastructure Planning and Management. This podcast is an interview with Wendy Freitag, Program Director for the University of Washington’s program linked above. In this podcast we talk generally about online degrees in general, to include those in emergency management. How they compare school to school and with resident courses of study. A bit of history on higher education in emergency management is included along with more specifics on the University of Washington’s program. With all the current talk of a large infrastructure funding bill, this program might just be the ticket for your future. Note: I am on the advisory board for the degree program. This episode is sponsored by The Blue Cell, a by design crisis and consequence management consulting firm with a primary focus on education and training for government at all levels, non governmental agencies and private sector entities engaged in incident and emergency management activities.
In keeping with a tradition started in Season One, Dan spoke with a panel of alums from programs featured in some of our Fall 2020 episodes -- North Carolina A&T’s Online Master of Science in Agricultural Education from Episode 19, Growth Edge; Virginia Tech’s Online Master of Natural Resources from Episode 17, Field & Screen, and the Online Program in Digital Content Strategy at University of Kansas, from Episode 16, Role Rehearsal. As educators, we try to create a learning environment that is inspiring, efficient, and above all meets a course’s stated learning objectives. Online learning is, by its very nature, conducive to innovative techniques. But, as with any creative endeavor, there will be hits and misses. So… how are we doing? What can we do to make learning outcomes even better? Following Dan’s conversation with our guests, I’ll join him for a debrief and a preview of Season Three’s topics.

Sponsored by the Cardinal Health Foundation In this episode we talk with Dr. Lynn McPherson, Professor and Executive Director, Advanced Post Graduate Education at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She teaches about pain management and palliative care in the PharmD curriculum, among other topics. She is also the Executive Director of the campus' Online Master of Science in Palliative Care. Dr. McPherson shares her perspective on pharmacists using their spidey senses when confronted with red flags to mitigate risks for opioid misuse and abuse. A person's “spidey sense” references the Marvel Character Spiderman and invokes an intuitive feeling, usually of something being dangerous or risky. We also discuss suggested ways to initiate dialogue with prescribers and patients to ensure that all stakeholders are appropriately assessing, monitoring and managing the use of opioids for pain management. 'Contact tracing.' It's just one of the terms that's become part of our everyday vocabulary in the past few months (like 'social distancing' and 'flattening the curve'.) But what does it mean? How does it actually work? 'It's a bit like being an investigator,' Colette Cunningham tells me in this conversation. She is a lecturer in the school of public health at University College Cork, in Ireland. She's worked in public health for many years in many different countries, so she brings - if I'm being honest - an awesome range of experience to her work during Covid-19 crisis in Ireland. We talk about inequalities in the impact of Covid-19 - on homeless people, asylum seekers and other vulnerable populations. About mental health consequences of the economic fallout. About bringing international expertise to bear on a public health emergency in Ireland. And having a weekend off, at last. Colette Cunningham directs the Online Master of Public Health (MPH) course at University College Cork, in Ireland. You can find details here: https://www.ucc.ie/en/publichealth//people/estaff/ccunningham/ We spoke on Saturday May 9th, 2020.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provide free lectures and assignments, and gained global attention for their potential to increase education accessibility. Plagued with high attrition rates and fewer returning students every year, MOOCs have pivoted to a new revenue model—offering accredited master's degrees for professionals. Host Meagan Cantwell speaks with Justin Reich, an assistant professor in the Comparative Media Studies Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, about the evolution of MOOCs and how these MOOC professional programs may be reaching a different audience than traditional online education. Archaeologists were flummoxed when they found a brilliant blue mineral in the dental plaque of a medieval-era woman from Germany. It turned out to be lapis lazuli—an expensive pigment that would have had to travel thousands of kilometers from the mines of Afghanistan to a monastery in Germany. Host Sarah Crespi talks to Christina Warinner, a professor of archaeogenetics at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, Germany, about how the discovery of this pigment shed light on the impressive life of the medieval woman, an artist who likely played a role in manuscript production. This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
My guest this time is Charles Isbell, Jr., Professor and Senior Associate Dean in the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. Charles and I go back a bit… in fact he’s the first AI researcher I ever met. His research focus is what he calls “interactive artificial intelligence,” a discipline of AI focused specifically on the interactions between AIs and humans. We explore what this means and some of the interesting research results in this field. One part of this discussion I found particularly interesting was the intersection between his AI research and marketing and behavioral economics. Beyond his research, Charles is well known in the ML and AI worlds for his popular Machine Learning course sequence on Udacity, which he teaches with Brown University professor Michael Littman, and for the Online Master’s of Science in Computer Science program that he helped launch at Georgia Tech. We also spend quite a bit of time talking about what’s really missing in machine learning education and how to make it more accessible. The notes for this show can be found at twimlai.com/talk/4.
