Lakeshia is here today to chat about our powerful position of influence. I think it's going to be an uplifting episode! Lakeshia thank you so much for coming back to the podcast! Lakeshia you caught my eye in your post that said, some of us are sitting in seats of power and positions of incredible influence but we don't see it that way because the world doesn't value it much; you don't get praise or rewards; or it doesn't pay a lot of money or carry a notable “title” You said that NONE of these factors lessen the actual power and influence we possess or absolve us of our responsibility to manage it well. If you're struggling with your mental health, it's not uncommon to think you're the only one. For today's guest, author Lakeshia Poole, her teen years were when her struggle began, leading to thoughts about ending her life. This episode deals with anxiety and depression and ways to help others who struggle. I love this interview because Lakeshia gives practical wisdom and spiritual truth. She also shows us that we forget to use the tools God has given us, especially the tool of prayer. Lakeshia encourages us not to let fear stop us from reaching out to someone who might be struggling, because we might be the person they need when they're in a difficult place. If you have been struggling with anxiety and depression during the pandemic or know a friend who is, you'll find encouragement and hope in Lakeshia's story. This week on The Basically Brown Podcast we are all about Growth & Acceptance. We kicked off the show by discussing Kyle Kashuv. The Parkland Shooting Survivor who was previously accepted by Harvard has recently lost his chance at attending the Ivy League School due to racist tweets he posted when he was younger. He's since apologized citing surviving the shooting as a major change in his thinking, but Harvard isn't budging. We talked about it, but what do you think? Do people really evolve in thinking ... Or are we to assume that a tiger never changes its stripes? Hannah, Jose, or LaKeshia ... name association. Do you judge people based on their name alone? A Caucasian woman named Lakeisha feels like she's experienced "The Black Woman" ... But does a name outside of your skin color qualify you to speak on life experience outside of your own? Brown & Corporate is our main topic this week ... How has things changed? Or have things changed? How can we continue to go up from there? We're talking about our experiences & we'd like to hear yours too. Of course we've got Brown Bosses (you never have to ask) check out these AMAZING minority owned businesses Nannas Babies Inc. - A wonderful nonprofit organization! LaKeshia Orr grew up in Cali, (aka Keshia from Cali) but grew a love for moving from city to city to experience life to the fullest. She moved to DC to attend Howard University, then to New York, Chicago, San Jose and San Diego all within a short time period. She had such a nomadic spirit, always on the move (literally lol). The major shift she experienced came with my diagnosis of Pulmonary Hypertension in 2017. Her Pulmonologist took her off of work; told her she could no longer live alone; and put her on the NO FLY LIST. Talk about a major shift in my lifestyle!! We are happy to have Lakeshia P. Dixon join the Cool Soror Podcast! A Cool Soror of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., this educator, activist, wife and mother has taken life by its horns and led the way. A native of Miami, Florida and mother of three, she strives to impart to her children the importance of education and always putting your best self forward. You can feel her incredible energy and zest for life with every utterance. Lakeshia wears many hats and the one with likely the most flair is the colorful hat of motherhood. Noticing her son, Kaiden begin to experience pain in his leg at a very young age, she dug deeper to get the answers she needed. That answer would not come until years later which resulted in her son’s leg being amputated. But what could have been deemed something completely life-altering has turned into an opportunity to educate people about children with physical differences. With that, “Kaiden The Great and the Sinister Lunch Lady” was born as well as Kaiden’s Crew, a non-profit organization that provides assistive devices to these children. She operates an Educational Enrichment company and provides support to local schools within her community. When asked how she prevails through uncertain times, Lakeshia simply states: “One day, TODAY, will be a long time ago. Knowing this, you can always push forward because your greater is certain to come.” This epitomes resilence and so does she.
