Send me a Text Message! In Matthew 25, Jesus tells a story about a rippled of generosity that travels all the way to His heart. You might think that it would take a really big act of kindness to ripple that far. But actually, it's pretty doable, it's a small act with a massive impact. Because when you do it, you are doing it for Jesus. In fact, that person in need, that person living in the margins of life, may be the only Jesus you see today! And whatever you do, this Lent Season, don't miss Jesus!

As we continue to honor, celebrate, and learn from the dynamics of the Lent Season, we must remember perfection cannot be achieved in this life. Two insights on today´s Gospel1. The Orthodox Church includes in the Lent Season a Sunday dedicated to this reading. It is a reminder that the attitude of self-righoutness and self-justification is a sure path towards perdition.2. Everything that the Pharisee says while he prays is true. What is wrong then? It is only half of the truth. And half-truths can be as dangerous as a lie.
In this episode, we consider the readings for the fourth Sunday of Lent, Year B:Numbers 21:4-9; Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22; Ephesians 2:1-10; John 3:14-21We discuss the bronze serpent, the Psalm's depiction of the Lord answering cries for help, people being God's workmanship, and Jesus' words to Nicodemus.Lent: Season of Repentance & Renewal, by: Dr. Esau McCaulleyPrimer on LentThe Chosen Season 4Podcast transcript from The Bible Project that discusses the bronze serpentNotes:--The Bible Project--Bible Project video on Numbers--Bible Project video on Ephesians3:35 Collect4:04 Numbers 21:4-925:57 Psalm 107:1-331:59 Ephesians 2:1-1042:01 John 3:14-21 Our outro music is an original song by our friend Dcn. What is Lent season and why is it so important to our lives as believers!
It's not a popular idea, but secular America is pretty damn religious. Pretty damn liturgical. Pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider donuts are the eucharistic elements of autumn. The militaristic pageantry of the 4th of July. Our children love asking about the next big event. Color coordinated myths drive the year along, shaping us into …. well, I'm not quite sure what this secular American liturgy is shaping us into. But I bet you and I could have had a great conversation about during a Super Bowl party earlier this month—where the eucharistic elements have changed—it's Buffalo wings and light beer—but it even comes with a sacred gathering of fanatical religious nuts, worshipping the high priest as he barks his coded sermon, and singing along with the high priestesses at halftime, praying all along to the gods of the gridiron to grant victory. When you put it that way, observing Lent—which starts today, Ash Wednesday—seems pretty tame and sensible.Joining me today on the show is Esau McCaulley—for a discussion of Lent. Esau is associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton college and a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times. He's author of Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope, which won Christianity Today's book of the year award in 2020, as well as a new book, Lent: The Season of Repentance and Renewal, which is part of a series entitled “The Fullness of Time”—which features other authors discussing different seasons of the Christian liturgical year and how it contributes to a Christian understanding of flourishing.During our conversation, Esau McCaulley and I discuss the Christian practice of Lent—he speaks about it as both a collective wisdom, passed down through generations of Jesus followers, as well as a spiritual rebellion against mainstream American culture. He construes Lent as a season of repentance and grace; he points out the justice practices of Lent; he walks through a Christian understanding of death, and the beautiful practice of stripping the altars on Maundy Thursday; and he's emphatic about how it's a guided season of finding the grace to find (or perhaps return) to yourself as God has called you to be.This episode was made possible in part by the generous support of the Tyndale House Foundation. Black death, Coronavirus death, War death.Jesus defeated death as our great enemy.“Everybody that I know and I care about are gonna die. Everybody.”“I, as a Christian, believe that because we're going to die. our lives are of infinite value and the decisions that we make and the kinds of people we become are the only testimony that we have and that I have chosen to, to, in light of my impending death, put my faith in the one who overcame death.”Two realities: We're going to die and Jesus defeated death.Stripping of the Altars on Maundy Thursday.Silent processional in black; Good Friday celebrates no eucharist.“I'm, like, the one Pauline scholar who doesn't like to argue about justification all of the time.”Good Friday's closing prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, son of the living God, we pray you to set your passion cross and death between your judgment and our souls.”“You end Lent with: Something has to come between God's judgement and our souls. And that thing is Jesus.”“Lent is God loving you enough to tell you the truth about yourself, but not condemning you for it, but actually saying that you can be better than that.”About Esau McCaulleyEsau McCaulley, PhD is an associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL and theologian in residence at Progressive Baptist Church, a historically black congregation in Chicago. On this episode, Dr. Gadson discusses how our Values can help us to become more conscious of Self. Dr. Gadson invites us to interrogate what are our values, how did our values come to be, and how do our values influence how we interact with others. She invites us to especially consider how do these interactions look in the various communities in which we find ourselves. Especially the church. Tune in to this episode to consider how during this Lent Season, we can focus on our character and become more conscious of not only Self, but also others. If we answer the Lord's call of “who shall I send?" with “here I am” - we need to be conscious of who we are sending. Truth of the Spirit welcomes Msgr. David LeSieur and Patti Brunner for “Ash Wednesday & Lent—Season of Hope Year A. Listen as they discuss the Church’s directive on fasting during Lent and the benefit available by fasting. The Gospel of Lent gives promise and hope to draw upon when daily lives seem “loss”. Paul’s writings show that as sinners you would receive the judgement accorded by the law and thus condemnation; Jesus came to stand-in for you. He accepted your sin to take upon himself the sins—like the scapegoat and sacrifice—thus bringing freedom. He who knew no sin became sin, that in his righteousness you might be saved. Season of Hope ties the progression of salvation in history. Before the earth was created the plan of your salvation was in the “heart” and “eye” of God, our Father. Fasting can prepare the heart to receive the fullness of the gift of salvation. [Please note that this is an audio presentation. This episode was originally broadcast on KDUA radio.]
Jesus describes our relationship with God with a powerful metaphor: He is the vine and we are the branches. What does that mean? How does it work? How come we often feel disconnected from God? How can we deepen our connection to the all-important source of life? Before we begin the Lent Season we will spend a few weeks in John 15:1-17.

Hi friends! This week on the podcast we are diving into the Lent season. What does it mean? Is it for every believer? What does it look like to make space in your heart for this forty day period? I will share the story of how in my adulthood I began observing Lent and how it changed me. I will also share what the Lent season has in common with cleaning the pan under my gas stove. :) I hope you are encouraged and inspired to pray about how you can make this special time in the church calendar a part of your own calendar. Here are some helpful resources for you: On Spotify - A Uniquely Beautiful Lent Season playlist! Here is a blog post I wrote on "How Lent Changed Me" & it includes several links to resources for you to check out - even a free kindle download of the book I'm reading this Lent season called, The Way of the Cross. https://www.councilroadwomen.org/blog/how-lent-changed-me#comments-5c7de6ad085229ec836d1957= Another special part of our Easter weekend is an annual Fun Run, 5 & 10 K that our family participates in. ALL proceeds go to help teen girls involved in the House of Healing. Sign up here: www.House-of-healing.org. No matter how you choose to observe Lent, I pray it is a set-apart time for you to be still with the Lord, meditating on His great sacrifice and growing in your own faith in Jesus. Share this episode with a friend and go live your one uniquely, beautiful story! xo
This episode is part follow up to Lent Episode 10 (prayer) and part follow up to Lent Episode 9 (culture wars.) Also I say, in the episode that we are moving "a week from tomorrow," but I waited a week to release this, so we are moving TOMORROW!!! So this might be the last one we can get in before Lent ends. So if that is the case, thank you so much for flowing through this with us! The podcast will continue but the subject matter will branch back out to include more than just religion and spirituality (though my guess is we keep coming back here.) We appreciate every click and listen. We really do. Deanna was out of town all last week when this was recorded, so it is just a Will episode. As a result, I took the opportunity to make somewhat of a crossover episode with my “you’re not listening to this” podcast. I let some issues surrounding prayer off my chest that I didn’t think were helpful in our last episode. Next, I transition into some thoughts on how Religion and the Divine are not the same thing. I walk you through the beginning of the story of the Woman at the Well to uncover what I believe to be right there on the surface: a deep philosophical and metaphysical debate about religion being a starting point to Truth, not the ultimate destination. This may seem obvious, but from my perspective, it is incredibly easy to substitute the divine experience for the comforts of following “right religion” without really noticing. In the context of the Woman at the Well, I believe we, all of us, frequently begin worshipping our wells instead of the Water. This one is a little more dense than others because I had the opportunity to flesh it out before recording. But don’t let that deter you. If you’re here for Dee (which why wouldn’t you be) come back next episode. If you’re here for a long monologue about how you treat the woman at the well determines how you read her story, then you’re weird, but you’re my people! Dig in. Couplestherapod.com
This episode deals with prayer. How we pray. Why we pray. How that has changed over the years as our faiths have deepened and widened. Also, we are sneaking up on the end of Lent, so this is one of the last episodes will have in this series. Deanna is out of town for the next 5 days and we are moving 4 days after that. So....this may be the last episode with Deanna in it. Hopefully we will sneak a couple more in. Enjoy! @couplestherapod Couplestherapod.com
In this episode we talk about the various effects culture has on biblical interpretation today and biblical compilation in the past. We hit on ways the bible has been used for misogyny, genocide, and slavery, not because of what is necessarily written in scripture, but in how the worlds around the reader interpret those scriptures. Of course this is sprinkled with game show theme songs, and sound clips from Beyonce, Tupac, and Kanye West (good Kanye not new Kanye)...cause you know, that makes sense. Dig in! CouplesTheraPod.com
This episode is just us talking about the differences in our "home" church experiences. Black church and white church. Big churches and small churches. What motivations and cultural truths are hidden in the music? This one was fun to make, but admittedly takes a hard left turn toward the end. These things happen. hahaha! p.s. thanks Gary Owen for inspiring this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC8Kwkxk-BI couplestherapod.com
In this episode of the Lent series, Dee leads the way into a discussion about Grace. Truth be told, Dee had to lead the discussion because Will's concepts and feelings surrounding Grace are ... complicated. We spend most of this episode bouncing metaphors around for better understandings of Grace. Maybe you have some ideas? This episode presents the question of what is religion, and what good is it? @couplestherapod Couplestherapod@gmail.com
We're back. We recalibrated and are back to the essence of what we were going for. We set out to present questions, not answers, and that's what happened here. Take a listen. We discuss how the Gospel is simple but religious life is so complex - not from a doctrinal standpoint or a heady theological one, but how complex things have gotten in our own actual pasts. The "theme" of the episode comes courtesy of a quote from the Bruxy Cavey book: Reunion “'A minute to learn, a lifetime to master' could also describe the good news of Jesus. There is a simplicity to the gospel, so that even (and especially) a child can comprehend it. There is also a depth and infinite richness to the gospel, which means that we can all spend the rest of our lives learning, discussing, and applying its truths."
In this podcast, the second in our Lent Season, Mtr Rozanne Hunte on the Second Sunday of Lent and Racial Justice Sunday explore the importance of why we should forgive – that God forgives the inexcusable in us to that we can forgive others. She makes reference to the Prophet Micah 6.6-8, Colossians 3.12-13 & The Gospel of Matthew 18.23.35. Mtr Roxanne is the BAME (Black Asian & Minority Ethnic Vocations Champion in the Diocese of Southwark and the Priest in Charge of the Benefice of Holy Innocents and St Mark Parish Churches in South Norwood. This was recorded at St Luke’s Peckham on 18th February 2018.
This episode concludes the first week of our Lent Season. In just a few short episodes, Dee and I fumbled across all kinds of things we find terribly interesting. But listen, everyday was silly, so we will continue but maybe just 2 or 3 week, cool? thanks! @couplestherapod Couplestherapod@gmail.com
This episode deals with the doctrine of Total Depravity in the Calvinistic sense when meditating on the penitent motivation of the Lent Season (with the additional argument that Total Depravity isn't really separable from the rest of Calvinism.) Total Depravity became useful to justify predestination, yet while the doctrine of predestination has lost favor, Total Depravity remains. To crudely summarize it: at its core, regardless of how you have been introduced to Total Depravity, the doctrine states that God hates the very essence of His creation, and knew He would before He created it. It teaches that you just by being alive are worthless. But the "worth" of something is what someone will pay for it. If we believe that Jesus was the Christ and Savior and that He "paid it all" for us, that he'd drop everything to find the one lost sheep, the one lost coin, or to patiently await the return of the prodigal son, how dare we believe we are worthless? Jesus routinely pointed out mankind's view of value as completely disconnected from His view of worth. WE wouldn't leave 99 sheep to save 1. WE wouldn't search all day for a penny and then throw a party worth everything we have to celebrate finding it. To US the value and the worth don't match. Part of the Good News is that we are wrong. Where we see no value, God saw all the worth in the world. Episode 2 of this series is Thursday February 15, 2018 and explores the tradition of lent a little more, before we begin to focus on themes next week. This episode considers the numerous Lent traditions, both canonized and cultural, to ask "where these traditions come from?," "what do they mean?," "what was there purpose?", and "how can I apply that to me life, right now?" We also found this episode to be inspired by Philippians 3:10-11: "I want to know Christ - Yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead." The Couples Therapy Podcast invites you to join us for the next month and a half or so as Deanna and I will sit and record a new episode for each day of Lent this year. This idea spawned from this interesting crossroads where I, raised a fundamentalist/Seventh-Day Adventist never got into Lent in my youth and Deanna, who was raised Methodist, has great love and warmth from Lent in her youth. However, when we each looked into what the internet says Lent is and is for, we couldn’t help but both disagree with swaths of what we found. What we agreed on is that Lent is about “going into the wilderness” like Jesus in Matthew 4 or Jacob wrestling with God in the wilderness in Genesis 32. When Jesus resurfaced the Bible suggests he immediately began His selfless ministry of spreading the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 4:17). Jacob emerged from the wilderness with a new name, Isreal, which means one that struggled with the divine, and went on to start the 12 tribes. Neither of these Biblical characters emerged from the wilderness simply penitent, but completely re-made and re-newed. Yes, Lent can be about identifying your personal struggles in life, vices, and “recurring sins” and seeking repentance as is often stated and done. However, it seems the point should perhaps be less about absolution of our sins (though inclusive) and more about the dissolution of the self… or so we propose. So, come along as we dig into various topics over the next 40 or so days ranging from Reconciliation, Grace, and Hope, to the condition of the Heart and Love, and finally how to make this ancient story and liturgy relevant to our daily lives in 2018, whether you are a “believer” or not. We will leave as much specific doctrine and dogma at the door as we venture into the wilderness, as this is intended to be for everyone.
