Last week Pat Wiedemer joined me discuss what the pro-life movement looks like in Canada and what it means to truly value all life. Our conversation continues today as we focus in on the importance of healthy families and how to discuss the topic of abortion with our children. Pat shares very practical thoughts on raising our children to value life and understand the importance of serving others. She also emphasizes how critical our work in the home is as mothers and the huge impact that healthy homes have in regards to this issue. Discussion: - raising children to value life - teaching our children selflessness and a willingness to serve others - setting a healthy foundation in the home to make talking about abortion easier - the importance of women supporting women Resources mentioned: Life Canada website www.lifecanada.org Baby Center week by week videos www.babycenter.ca Mother Teresa quotes About Pat: Pat Wiedemer is the Executive Director of PEI LIFE and is also the President of the LifeCanada National Association. Our lack of laws regarding abortion in this country speaks volumes about the value we place on life, not only life in the womb but the emotional, mental and spiritual health of our women and their families. Discussion: - the reality of consequences following abortion - societal pressures that make abortion look like an easy “way out” of pregnancy, while leaving women hurting and alone in their regret - we discuss the misinformation regarding the often looked upon “grey area” of rape/incest cases and why choosing life is always the best decision for both mother and baby! It does nothing to promote palliative care or protect conscience rights for doctors. Natalie also discusses the unique educational role of Life Canada among Canada's many pro-life organizations.

Brian Knowler has been a police officer for 17 years, working in Patrol, Community Response, Incident Command and Emergency Management, Media Relations, and Legal Services. In 2004 he was the first one on the scene of a fatal collision in which the driver who died was a close friend of Brian's. Brian buried the impact of that night until 2012, when he hit bottom physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually and was finally diagnosed with PTSD from this experience. He now speaks and writes extensively on topics around psychological health and trauma in the emergency response field, and has been consulted by media outlets across Canada. In March 2016, he published ‘On the Other Side of Broken – One Cop’s Battle With the Demons of PTSD.’ He is a member of the Police Advisory Group of Badge of Life Canada, an organization dedicated to furthering PTSD awareness and advocacy. Before pursuing policing as a career, Brian went to law school and trained as a lawyer, but never practiced. In 2010, Brian finally decided to make his Call to the Bar, and now his lawyer’s robes, even though they’ve been worn only once, hang in his office, next to his body armour. Brian’s wife Cathy, a cop’s daughter, is a teacher, and trauma counselor for families and spouses of first responders. She co-wrote a chapter of Brian’s book and is “one of the strongest women” he knows. They have two teenage sons, who still think it’s cool to have a dad who is a cop.

(originally broadcast February 9, 2006) Seeds are the foundation of our food supply and the building blocks of culture, community and well-being. Seeds also represent an industry of which 50% of global sales are controlled by 10 companies. The patenting and control of seeds is already a reality, but the push is now on to introduce Terminator technology - plants that have been genetically modified to render sterile seeds at harvest. This technology will prevent farmers from saving their seeds for the following season and help protect the global seed industry. We will discuss the importance of seeds, Terminator technology, and the Canadian-based worldwide campaign "Ban Terminator". Guests Lucy Sharratt - coordinator of the Ottawa-based Ban Terminator international campaign, an initiative of the ETC Group. Lucy has been involved with the Polaris Institute and the Sierra Club of Canada. Terry Boehm - Vice-President, National Farmers Union (NFU) - Saskatchewan. Terry is a canola farmer in Allan, Saskatchewan. Devlin Kuyek - Montreal-based staff member of GRAIN - an international non-governmental organisation which promotes the sustainable management and use of agricultural biodiversity based on people's control over genetic resources and local knowledge. Coordinator of the Forum on the Patenting of Life (Canada), member of the Groupe de recherche: technosciences du vivant et soci©t© at the University of Quebec at Montreal. Harry Collins - Vice-President of Technology Transfer, Delta & Pine Land Company - headquartered in Scott, Mississippi, has offices in eight states and facilities in several foreign countries. Holds three patents jointly with the United States Department of Agriculture. These were the first patents on Terminator. Delta & Pine Land is conducting greenhouse tests of Terminator; is the 11th largest seed company in the world; is the largest cotton seed company in the world and produces and sells conventional and GM soy and cotton seed.
